Owners John Pedersen and Judy Kaufman operate this venerable establishment with the greatest love for musicians young and old, the music taught and played there, and the instruments that are bought, sold, rebuilt, and repaired by a master craftsman.Humor, musical expertise, and bedrock honesty and integrity are Amazing Graces equally important stock in trade.Ive personally bought fine instruments at extremely fair prices over the decades Ive visited this store from my home in Southern California, and Im thoroughly satisfied with the value of each of them.5 Stars Plus for Amazing Grace!
Old school craftmanship. Get your guitar back better than new. If you want attention to detail ask John. Low pressure atmosphere. You can tell they love what they do by their work
Easy to get to. Beautify building, amazing collection of guitars, ukuleles, banjos and violins. Prices are really good and the owner is as nice as they get. He does not do the hard sell. He will tell you when you come in to check out want you want and ask for help when you need it. Take him up on it. Oh, and word has it that he is talented at repairing string instruments.
Great local music store. Got my first guitar from their old store when I was 13. Comfortable layout and helpful service. Ask John to fix your violin or if youre looking to take up Uke/banjo.
So, lately Ive had some experiences that have made it clear(er) that Ive taken for granted some resources that been no brainer reliable. John Pederson at Amazing Grace Music in San Anselmo is the latest reminder. Literally, for decades I have dealt with this man and have referred friends with little reflection. NOW I would like to finally celebrate that relationship. More of an instrument owner than a player, John has always allowed for my efforts to explain, even though my lingo was novice. ALWAYS professional and polite, John understood my needs and attended to them. My best interactions with others seem to not require connecting and have a no navigation required effortlessness(Such as with John Pederson). AND HES EXPERIENCED IN HIS CRAFT! You can trust me on that.I celebrate decades of taking Johns talent and reliability for granted!!,Ted Furlo(Thanks John!)
Deeply thoughtful craftsmen, the Amazing Grace team does expert work on repairing guitars, violins, mandolins, and more. The shop is quiet and civilized. They fixed my broken Taylor dreadnought perfectly despite the complex break in the wood and varnish. Excellent place.
Always kind and friendly and very likable. In it for the art, not the buck. Broadest selection of new and used acoustic. Fun toys and fine instruments. Famous and respected. They had the time and were interested in my 6 year old who was just starting on the uke.
Bought a wonderful fiddle at a great price. Thanks!
Superb spot for the hard to find string instrument or the impossible to find.
Best music shop in Marin county! Great service; my banjo sounds amazing after John’s expert set up!
The owner is full of a lifetime of grizzled musical experiences. Hell tell you the truth and charge you a fair price.
Best shop for stringed instruments you will ever visit.
I’ve had my Paramount Style “B” Tenor Banjo since 1978 (it will turn 100 in 1922). I found out the hard way that it’s my most prized possession. While entertaining at a Novato retirement home one of the residents came forward during a break and being visually impaired knocked my banjo over. Even though it was a carpeted floor, the weight of the banjo was too much and the neck snapped off at the base of the headstock. I felt as though I had been in an automobile accident as the loss of my instrument registered sickeningly. But if anyone could help, I knew who that was and by the end of that Saturday we rushed my baby to the the ER. Otherwise known as Amazing Grace Music in San Anselmo. John and Judy Pedersen were on hand as usual and they looked on sympathetically as I opened the case, my face still white with shock. It’s a great comfort to have craftsmen like John in our community. Here’s someone who has worked on instruments their whole life and has the skill to make concert level Irish bagpipes from the ground up let alone fix the action on a guitar or re-fret a mandolin.John told me that putting the neck back together would be a pretty straightforward glue job, but redoing the mother of pearl ornamentation on the headstock would take some time. He could either send it to the east coast to a friend who specializes in such things or he could do it himself. I chose to keep the banjo close to home and asked John to do the job.A few months later it was ready and when I opened the case my mouth fell to the ground. The headstock actually looked better than it did before it was broken. The piece of ebony that covers the headstock had been completely replaced. The tiny pieces of mother-of-pearl that I had gathered up at the time of the accident had been carefully placed and you can still read the name of the maker, Wm. Lange. When asked how in the world he was able to redo the headstock with the original mother-of-pear John just shrugged and said, “Oh, I just used a router.” Yes, and Michelangelo just used a paintbrush.I loved and adored my Paramount before the accident, but now, every time I pick it up I’m filled with gratitude that I still have it. Thanks to Amazing Grace.
