This shop is LEGIT!The owner Profiled two sets of blacksteel for me, took the time to talk me through my needs and made thoughtful recommendations, and even “fixed” one pair when I asked for forward pitch and didn’t like it (my fault of course, just testing it) free of charge. That is excellent service. I will definitely be using this shop for every sharpening/profile in the future and recommend it highly to every other hockey player who, like me, doesn’t have local access to advanced profiling and sharpening options.

BAHR brought new life back to my favorite pair of gloves, and did a damn fine job of sharpening my skates to boot. Not a glam store, just solid workmanship and friendly folks. Highly recommended and worth the drive.

Despite multiple requests, the owner of Bay Area Hockey Repair (Essan Galo) has failed to return my goalie gear which was entrusted to him on April 20th, 2020. According to Essan’s text messages (included below), hockey is no longer a priority at Bay Area Hockey Gear. Instead, BAHR is determined to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic by selling hastily-made cloth face masks for $39.54 each (screenshot attached).  I’ve even provided Essan with a shipping label to facilitate the return process, but he’s made it clear that he’d rather crank out unrated, non-medical grade gimmicky face masks than take five minutes out of his day to pack up my gear and put it in the mail.You can tell all there is to know about a business by the way it treats its clients. In retrospect, I should have known BAHR would be a terrible choice by the casual disrespect Essan showed me in multiple text messages leading up to the handoff.It’s been almost a month since I made the mistake of leaving my gear with BAHR. Instead of returning my gear, Essan is now threatening me with a restraining order. Nice business model, right?Avoid Bay Area Hockey Repair at all costs.

Brought my blocker in for a re-palming, super happy with the end results and Essan was able to perform some additional repairs to the blocker as well.

Great business. I live in Hong Kong and I ordered a new set of Byonic Blades and had them do a ProSharp Quad profile (which is not available where I am). They have all sorts of steel and profiles to choose from. It was convenient to be able to buy new steel and have them profiled before being sent to me. I will definitely mail in my steel to BAHR for re-profiling in the future. Thanks for the great service!

About two years ago after moving to the Bay Area from Chicago I brought in my completely shredded pro return Eastons. Essan was able to completely reconstruct the mitts, gussets and all. All for a really inexpensive price just over $100 bucks. Two years later they are still going strong. Best gloves and repair Ive ever had. Thank you Essan.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE dealing with this place and its owner, Essan. Ordered a $590 pair of skates on February 29, 2020. After my order was placed, Essan the owner of Bay Area Hockey Repair sent me an email, stating Thanks for the offer! I can backorder these skates for you, takes a few weeks. I was a little concerned about the use of the word offer and that I was now being told after placing my order - and MY CREDIT CARD ALREADY BEING CHARGED - that it would take a few weeks - but after some back and forth with Essan about the time frame I told him I would like to cancel my order. Essan informed me I could not cancel my order without incurring a 20% restocking fee!!! A 20% restocking fee (or $118) on skates he had to special order and never even took into his stock!!! I acquiesced and told him to get me the skates which he said would take a few weeks. Now, the pandemic craziness hit in March after my order and I anticipated some delay from the few weeks timeframe Essan communicated. However, THREE MONTHS PASSED, and in May 2020 - also the last time I heard from Essan, he told me he did not have my skates and that he still would not refund my money. This was also the last time I was able to get in touch with Essan. I waited another month and a half (FIVE MONTHS AFTER PLACING MY ORDER) and at the end of June I tried to email and call Essan and received no responses. At this point I was very stressed out. Essan had almost $600 of my money, and I had nothing to show for it, and he had gone completely dark on me. Thus, on the last day of June 2020, I filed a complaint with my credit card company who said they were opening an investigation and if they received no response from Essan or Bay Area Hockey by September 2020, they would credit my account. Ultimately Essan did no respond and luckily my credit card company was able to credit my account for the $590. If this is the kind of mess you are seeking, then shop at Bay Area Hockey Repair. I would give zero stars if that was an option as he doesnt deserve even one star. AVOID AT ALL COSTS - ESSAN IS A CROOK AND CANT BE TRUSTED!

Moved here a few years ago from Texas and immediately began playing hockey in the adult leagues in Fremont and San Jose, and quickly realized that all my old gear from college was falling apart. Not only did Essan help get me all fixed up and back on the ice quickly he made fantastic gear recommendations that helped keep my gear going despite the age.The man does it all and does it all with a smile on his face, always have had great conversations with him at his store, he’s incredibly knowledgeable about hockey, and has a true passion for hockey and helping out hockey players of all skill levels.If you need to just get your skates sharpened, if you need to re-palm a glove or get custom gear this man can do it!! 10/10

Essan is awesome and he is not just fast he is Asian fast. Never skated better on skates after he sharpened mine for the first time and will continue to use him for that. A pair of skates that I picked up werent fitting right so the guys at the Fremont Sharks Ice recommended I come over here and Im happy I did. The shop is also full of a ton of used gear that has a lot of life left and this guy really knows what hes talking about.This is the place to come if youre having any problems with your skates.

I went to Bay Area Hockey Repair to see if they could help me with my leg length discrepancy and the pain it was causing when I skate. After I told them how one of my legs was 2.5cm longer then the other they gave me a few options on how we can address the issues. They added a lift to my left skate and called me 2 days later. After skating with my new modifications to my skate it feels great and I’m pain free.The guys at BAHR really care and take pride in getting their customers the right products and repairs.

I bought membership there but lately it happened many times I goes there during business hour and shop closed. I am not live close by and have to make special trip every time When I asked the owner if the hours changed he got very angry. He said I dont care, I have personal things need to take care and yelling to me acting like a crazy mane. I was shocked and called 911 He said he try to sell the business and I just bought member ship last December. If he cant make sure running the hours and can hire somebody to run. It is not reliable now. He wont get money back. I wont back to that shop. It is terrible experience

Great place, great guy. Stopped in to get my skates sharpened, mentioned that i had my gear stolen months ago so should me to the used room. (i had been dreading replacing all of the equipment) Ended up walking out with a new set of equipment sans a helmet for MUCH MUCH less than i had thought it would cost me. Wish i would have gone months ago.

Essan takes care of all his customers. They are honest and give you advice on if repairs are necessary. I get all of my skate sharpening here as well as my skate repairs if needed. I’ve gotten multiple re-palms of my gloves done here and it’s always a top notch job. The digital palm is my favorite!

They are they best in the business. I had a pair of goalie pants that were ripped to shreds. I thought they were goners. Was told they were not worth repairing by others. Took them in and they repaired them fast. They are good as new and could not tell they were repaired. They are fast honest and prices are very reasonable. Makes my goalie gear last 10 times longer.

Called in because my warrior ritual leg pads had over rotation like crazy. Warrior gave me no feedback and said buy G3s. Hey area sent me toe bridges and toe hooks. Took the original sliders off and did the bay area recommended fix. Pads feel like AMAZING. Oh yeah, I ordered on a Thursday and the boys had me my product by Sat. Cant say enough about this place..... LIFESAVERS!!!!

I had been having an issue with my skates where I didnt feel connected to them or the ice. I went into BAHR to BUY new custom Graf skates. Essan took all of the measurements he needed and then asked if I had my current skates with me. I grabbed them and he took a look at them, pulled the foot pad out and took the time to explain to me why I was having those issues. He hade try my skates on but with Graf foot pad and even before a proper fitting, they felt instantly better. We then did the proper fit of them by heating them up and putting them on again so they would mold to my feet. When I had first walked in, he was in the middle of sharpening steel, stopped what he was doing, talked me out of buying NEW skates and helped make my current work for me! With the local retail shops being very limited and their staffs knowledge and willingness to help questionable, BAHR is really your only choice if you want to become a better skater, save money and feel like you have your own equipment manager to help you. BARH should change their hashtag to #BAHRitsyouronlychoice

I ordered a set of Byonic skate blades for my new CCM AS1 full custom skates. My original order was for a Quad 0.5 profile however I had questions about the difference between that profile and the Quad 1. The hockey store I purchased my skates from only have the top three Quad profiles (0,1, and 2). I sent an email to get the the thoughts from Kevin at Bay Area Hockey. I was able to speak to Kevin the next day and with his help we changed my order to a Quad 1. Kevin was very knowledgeable and I felt confident that he was leading in the right direction. I am excited to get my new blades already profiled and sharpened and ready for the ice. Thank you Kevin!!!

Really unfortunate to have to give this review. A couple of years ago it seemed like BAHR was a really good shop. I ordered some skate blades from Essan about a year ago. They were back ordered, and then COVID happened. I dont blame him for that. But as the months stretched on, and Id check in every 8-12 weeks, he eventually stopped responding, and finally shut down his email or blocked me altogether. Its far too late to file a credit card dispute, too. The right thing to do would be to refund my money or offer a credit (and I was willing to try different skate blades, but he was uninterested in that).Looking at other reviews, it seems Im not the only one who got shafted. Its really a shame.

It was a short time I was in there and the reason was for the quick service. I saw a good $30 sharks jersey that was usually 80-100 dollars in other places.Essan was very nice and made the visit short. Although it didn’t last long, it was one of the best places I have been to. The customer service was good. I would always DM him asking questions and they were all answered in the nicest and most helpful ways.I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Outstanding work! He not only repairs, but can modify gear, especially goalie gear. Not only do I take all my own gear there, but he does repairs on old gear that we use to get new skaters and goalies started with the NCWHL.To date hes: re-palmed my blocker, modified my glove to open and close properly, fixed toe ties, toe bridges and buckles on at least 5 pairs of pads, sewed up 2 pairs of pants, and replaced elastic on shin guards for about half the skaters I know.Rumor has it hes going to be sharpening skates soon!

I had some old shoulder pads that I was ready to throw out, but I figured that I would let BAHR take a look at them first. They were able to rework them into like-new condition quickly at a good price (much cheaper than getting a new set of pads). I would definitely recommend this place!

After a let’s call it ‘well less than perfect’ skate sharpening at a local shop, Essan at BAHR quickly identified and remedied the issues. Learned my lesson. Not taking my skates anywhere else. Do yourself a favor and do the same.

I send all of my major repairs to BAHR and I live in Ohio. Essan is a professional and so easy to communicate with to get repair work or custom modifications made to equipment. He rebuilt my Vaughn pro stock goalie gloves to my exact, requested specifications. The work is flawless and after a full season theyre holding up better than they came out of the factory. Im now using the mail-in sharpening and he makes it simple to get his top notch and consistent service - even if youre across the country from his shop.

We have 4 hockey players (roller and ice) in my family and there always seems to be a need for some type of repair. Having Bay Area Hockey Repair 10 minutes from my work is a blessing. Essan can fix almost anything when it comes to hockey equipment. re-palms, new straps, recolour leather, new padding, new lacing, whatever you need. Hes made my pads like new, completely redone the strapping on my husbands pads, and reconditioned dozens of pieces for friends.The new shop is tucked down a longish driveway, but worth it for sheer size - now hes got room for *all* the requests!

I took my goalie pads in to get the stitching on the knee repaired since it was ripping and you could see the foam inside the pads. Essan did a great job stitching the pads back up in just 2 weeks when I was in between hockey seasons. He also did some minor repairs free of charge like replacing the old worn out velcro and added more foam inside my pads to stiffen them up (they had become pretty soft after 15 years of use). Great experience and great service, their prices are very fair and turn around time is fast. If you need any equipment repairs Bay Area Hockey Repair is the place to go.

Essan saved the day again! Took my worn and ripped coachs bag into BAHR for repairs as replacing it would have cost $90 - $100. They stitched up the rips at a fraction of that price, and you have to really look hard to know that there was any work done to the bag. Great job as always! If you need equipment repairs dont hesitate to give BAHR a call. Oh and check out their custom skate guards and steel bags - I own both and they are awesome!

The absolutely best hockey skate shop around. Yes, they sell skates, not just repair them.I’m new to skating and wanted to commit to it so bought my first pair at the shop at rink across the street. Thirty minutes in and out with a pair of Bauer x500s and experienced severe feet pain right off the bat. Thinking I needed to break in the skates, I stuck with them but the pain never went away.I went to Essan at BAHR to see if there is something he can do and he told me that the skates are 2 sizes too big. He sized me correctly and recommended a pair of Graf skates, which are apparently very popular in Europe. The reason he recommended the Grafs was because he could pop the sides to shape better to my feet…almost like custom fitting. He ordered them for me, and when they came it, baked and fitted them on me. He took his time to explain how to take care of them, how often to sharpen them and told me to come back if they didnt feel right. First time out with the skates, I skated longer and better than I ever have. Almost like a night and day difference between the Grafs and the Bauers. The Grafs are much much better quality in materials, stiffness and titanium blades, and they were pretty much the same price as the Bauers. I feel like a got the bargain of the year, plus tons of knowledge from Essan.Oh yeah, his repairs are to quality because the man cares.Buy your hockey skates here, just do it.

5 stars for a reasons. BAHR knows their stuff, from quick fixes, to full on repairs these guys know how to do it. Ive had goalie gear done (catcher and blocker) as well has patch work and full re-palms of player gloves and have never had a complaint. Recently I needed two patches for two sets of gloves and he did in 15 minutes . Great work, used the gloves in a game the same day and they felt great. Its a bonus that they are so close, I can stop in for a quick 15 minute patch work right before a game and be back on the ice, ready to go. Dont live close? Doesnt matter, BAHR also does mail ins! Get your repairs done here!

I cant say enough good things about this shop. Always willing to spend the time with the customer to make sure that what they do is done right - and right for the customer. They can mod or repair ANYTHING, and make repairs that are fast, and that will last. On repairs, the work is better than the manufacturer often provides.I have referred many people to the shop (skaters and tendys), and they have all come away happy customers.BAHR offers repairs and modifications that nobody else can or will do, and from a wealth of experience as a goaltender, which makes his recommendations top notch.From now on...I will contact him for a consult BEFORE buying new equipment, rather than after.

Essan did a fantastic job adding some sport gold straps to my CCM pads, and even threw in some extra on the elastic straps and toe bridge for free!He also completely replaced the inside and toe bindings on my pair of Vaughn leg pads, going out of his way to find material matching Vaughns retro tan color. Of course he let me know that it might take a while, and he even gave a discount just for being a repeat customer, too; how nice!If you need any kind of hockey equipment repair, skater or goalie, this is the place to go, especially if youre in The Bay.

These guys are awesome!!! My 25 year old Jofa elbow pads look brand new!! Gloves have new palms and the finger gusets were trimmed since they stretch out so much. In heaven!! Cant believe all my favorite equipment I tossed out over the years when I could have just had it fixed. Gloves, shins, elbows, pants... These guys do it all. And quickly!!

I didnt feel comfortable with the idea of sending my gear across the country but the crew at BAHR were so good at answering my questions and concerns quickly that I felt I could trust them and get answers when I needed them. I didnt need any questions answered after it was shipped. I felt I was kept in the loop about when the got it and they shipped it out a couple of days sooner than I expected. When I got my glove back ( had a rip in the back of the cuff) I couldnt tell anything was was wrong looked like new . They will be getting my future repairs and I am planning on having them mod my pads a bit.

I had a problem... lots of gear repairs needed with very little down time between seasons to get it done. I spoke to Essan & Chris about my needs and we worked out a plan that would get half my gear repaired in less than a week and the other half in my two week break between seasons. Not only were the repairs done well, they came in early on a Sunday so I could pick up before a game (not many service providers will do that for you)! A couple of pieces needed adjustment after the initial repair, no questions asked, they took them back in and fixed them up properly. The pricing of the repairs was fair too given the work I was asking to have done. Im definitely going to use them again and would recommend them to anybody that asks.

Kevin at BAHR is great, and let me tell you why.My son had a CAHA weekend in SJ, and during his Friday night game his skate blade cracked in half. He came off the ice at 10:45 and had to be back on ice Saturday morning at 10:15. I had less than twelve hours to get him a new blade and, being from out of town, I didnt know where to go to get this done.First thing in the morning I tried a place and was told they couldnt help me because my son has Graf skates, for which they didnt have a blade that fit. They suggested I buy him some new skates (from them, of course). Instead, I went to BAHR as soon as it opened.Kevin took a look and couldnt immediately find anything that fit. He then took the time to dig around and find something that worked and made the repair in about 15 minutes for a very reasonable price. I thank him for taking that extra few minutes to find something that worked.If I lived in SJ Id go there for all my hockey needs. Instead, Ill be sure to order equipment through there whenever I can. BAHR definitely earned my business.

Essan has helped me get ALL of my goalie pads (and skates) fixed up, modified, repaired and customized. From cleaning, re-palming, buckle & strap replacements, knee cradle relocation (as part of the conversion from 31+1 to 33+2), color matching my refurbed blocker & glove(which I bought from him) to my legs pads....he can do it all! (he even did a custom re-fit to my chestie which made it fit just right).He has re-palmed my player gloves and will be receiving all of my future repairs, mods and upgrades because there is just NO reason to go anywhere else.He gets jobs done quickly and his quality is impeccable without charging an arm and a leg.Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

I saw an ad for a garage sale type sale at BAHR this afternoon. I drove down to see what was up. Its been on my mind for a while to learn to play ice hockey, but I have not done it yet. I saw a few items at the sale that might fit me. Essan saw me looking and so he helped me try on the skates, helped me find some shin guards, and a bunch of other items I would need to get started. He heat molded my skates and sharpened them on the spot. He spent time helping me understand what kind of gear I would need to set me up to skate. He talked to me about the womens leagues and introduced me via Facebook to the woman who would help me get started. I am so happy I went down there today. I feel like I had the warmest welcome possible into the world of ice hockey!

Essan is a hockey nut and is only trying to keep our sport alive by making sure he can do anything he can to get all your gear repaired and modified so you dont waste money buying new gear that is overpriced and isnt what youre used to. BAHR are by far the best repair shop I have ever come across. I have played goal in hockey for over 40 years and been through my share of repair shops in Canada and the USA. This shop DELIVERS amazing quality and amazing customer service!I sent my 6 year old Reebok Pro grade catcher in for repair not really knowing what was needed other than I took a stinger for the first time on my thumb. Essan (owner) assured me he can rebuild it, and in time for my tournament just weeks away.Every step of the way I was kept informed of the progress, sent pictures of the glove while in repair and he was on time and budget! They went above and beyond in my opinion. They matched the color changes I wanted, however subtle and it looks amazing!I also bought new pad knee straps and they are incredible in terms of design and function.Send your equipment here...you will be glad you did and you will save a ton of money refurbishing as opposed to buying new. My Reebok XPulse Pro Catcher is better than new with Essans special touches.

Bay Area Hockey Repair gave my equipment a head-to-toe makeover. In just 10 days they were able to put new foam padding inside my helmet and refurbish it, re-palm the blocker, re-lace the glove, repair broken straps on my chest protector, modified my goalie pants to add straps for suspenders, replaced broken straps on my goalie pads, and removed all of the puck marks off them. They also cleaned all of my gear which sanitized it. My gear dropped 3 pounds in total weight after being washed (thats a lot of old sweat and grime removed!). I cant say enough about how professional the owner Essan is and what quality work BAHR did to update my gear. If you are a hockey player and hate breaking in new gear, then you need to pay BAHR a visit to extend the life of your equipment.

Essan breathed new life into my Total One NXGs that Ive had for a few years. The palms were crusty and full of holes thatd lead to my stick tearing my skin up after a long skate & shoot. With the repalm, theyre cushy and comfy, and everyone tells me they smell delightful.He was quick, accommodating (offered me some loaner mitts until mine were finished), and Im totally satisfied with the work.

Excellent hockey repair/modification! I brought an old set of TPS pads for repairs maybe a year ago, and Essan did a fantastic job breathing new life into them. Then, a few weeks ago, a Brians SubZero catcher + blocker were in dire need of stitching + a repalm. At the same time, I also got some modifications done on the catcher so thats its *better* than factory new. Cant ask for more than that. Thanks! Ill have more gear that needs TLC -- will definitely bring it to BAHR. Also, Im really happy with the skate sharpening service.

Essan and his crew are top notch. Ive played in between the pipes for over 15 years and having BAHR is essential to keeping my game top notch. These Guys Are The best! BAHR took on the huge project of refurbing a goalie mask that I bought and brought in. They replaced all of the padding, straps, hardware, and resealed the cage for a great deal, saving me hundreds from buying new. BAHR also has a good assortment of hockey gear (I bought a freshly repalmed blocker that feels great) and repair pieces packaged up and ready to go for those adventure seekers on the run. Highly recommend checking the shop out if you are a player or goalie, Essan will take care of ya.

They look so good now youd think I bought a new pair.Im a lefty shot so my right glove (the one thats at the top of the stick) was completely worn through at the palm. Like, completely. Some remnants of the finger material was still there, so I could still play with them, but when your glove doesnt have material between your stick and bare palm, its time to do something.Id had these gloves re-palmed once already (about 6 years ago, during my college hockey days) so some of the actual padding around the glove was starting to show through too. I mean these gloves were a wreck.And now theyre like new! Seriously, I couldnt believe my eyes. In addition to re-palming them, Essan, at no extra charge, patched up the padding and cleaned the gloves inside and out. Its the best of both worlds... the gloves feel like new, but also retain that comfortable broken in feel as well. The material is sturdy and tough, the stitching is clean and strong... Im confident my refreshed gloves will last another 6 years!HELMET:I threw in my helmet for repair as well, almost as an afterthought. Some of the metal and fixtures had come off (I dont take care of my helmet very well...) and I figured, while Im here, Ill have Essan take a look at it.Essan repaired all of the metal and nylon fixtures, which was great, but then he went above and beyond and re-aligned the padding of the helmet and re-attached it. Seriously, my helmet feels better than new. It used to slide down my forehead instead of stayed seated on top of my head. Now it fits snug as a bug in a rug. Essan fixed it better than I even knew to ask for.PRICE / 5 starsThe price was super competitive (and if you count the free patch work, cleaning and pad re-adjustment, a complete steal)! If I were to replace my helmet and gloves for similar tier products Id easily be paying over $250... Essan did everything for under $100. Plus theres no breaking in necessary or the awkward adjustment to new gear.TIMELINESS / 5 starsI brought my stuff in on a Saturday afternoon. Essan had it all done by my game the following Thursday. I think he quotes a one-week turnaround time for his repairs, but I know for a fact he always gets it done faster. Plus, hes so personable and hard-working, if you talk to him and explain time-crunched situations, hes sure to work something out with you.OVERALL / 5 starsI dont want to sound overly enthusiastic about the Essan and Bay Area Hockey Repair, but its hard not to. With the way gear is getting more and more expensive and the drive to make a buck at all costs, its so refreshing to find an honest and quality establishment. I know corporations are taking over, but shops like Bay Area Hockey Repair make a indisputable argument for good ol fashioned craftsmanship, attention to detail and care. I dont know that Ill ever have to buy new gear again :)

Came back to playing goalie after a 4 year break. Needed to get all my gear fixed up. Essan and BAHR totally hooked it up. They repaired a rusted mask, buffed/washed my catcher, blocker, and legpads, changed my legpads to niemi strapping, fixed the toe-tie, and fixed a stick (via integral hockey).
