Beautiful store, very modern. On actual bike service would give a solid B. Just picked up bike after tuneup and cleaned the chain, cassette but left out everything else below as the pictures show. Not bad but just average work. There is a lot of dirt in a drivetrain that was supposed to have been cleaned, serviced.
Bought a few bikes here, initially the service was fine, even good...now though, things have changed. Lots of employees have an attitude and will talk down to you if you ask a question. Even worse is that 4 out of 5 times when I brought in my bike with a simple mechanical problem, they were unable to fix it properly. For example, when asked to fix a squeaky handlebar they decided to just tighten the screw, over torquing it and destroying the internal bearings.
Great staff, very modern havent bought anything yet though.
Maybe because people lack choice in the area that customer service folks dont feel the need to acknowledge when a customer is waiting: no nod of recognition, ask if one needs help, statement that someone will be right with me. Nothing, didnt even look at me. Well, I can find other places to spend my money. Parts and service sucks.
Always perfect. You dont need to go ANYWHERE else, but Cognition. Never had an issue these guys could not solve. From selecting, fitting and buying my bike at the best price in the Bay Area (and Ive been to EVERY shop big and small) to maintenance, component installation and anything in between. Everyone is incredibly professional, yet friendly and down to earth. Not to mention the store is beautiful with a lovely ambiance.
Absolutely great service, Ben is incredibly helpful and each time I have called he has helped me with any request I had. Just recently they have fixed my MTB above and beyond what they were supposed to do. Edgar and Max from the service were incredibly helpful. I would highly recommend Cognition Cyclery as a go to place for your bike needs.
Best shop in the bay. Super helpful staff, bikes for every kind of rider, great array of clothing and gear.
Excellent service! Helpful and passionate staff as well
Its hard to get a hold of them via phone or email. When I finally got a hold of them via phone, I was told to bring my bike in to get an estimate on the repair. I went in the next day. After waiting 20 minutes outside the store, I was finally greeted by an employee who told me that I would have to wait 2 weeks for bike service/repairs. I promptly left. Wish they told me that piece of info on the call.
New bike day today, thanks Ben! I knew what I wanted (stumpy evo :) and the friendly staff and environment sealed the deal. Stoked on my purchase but elevated to another level knowing I have a place to take it when it needs assistance.
Great staff, great products. I will be back.
Excellent sales and service. Got my first MTB from these guys. Lifetime adjustment is awesome - took advantage of it twice already. They always greet with a smile and are ready to help. Highly recommended and will definitely return!
Ran into a grumpy employee who seemed knowledgeable, but not very pleasant to work with.
In light of shortage of e-bike, I bought one from east coast and had it shipped here to assemble & prep. Staff were very responsive and helpful and friendly, despite it being super busy.
Friendly staff and a good repair shop. I ran into a couple of the guys at a local trail maintenance day - good folks. Ive purchased a bike here, had wheels trued and other repairs- they do good work.
Great bike store with good mechanics, excellent bikes and fitting expertise.
Excellent service delivered on a Sunday. Lucky I dropped in on a day when they had time to sort out a number of issues in one go. Polite, effective, delivered as good as it gets. Thanks.
Very helpful.Courteous.Professional.Had everything I needed n more.Fairly priced.DID NOT SEE or EXPERIENCE any Price Gouging like so many taking advantage of the lack of services and supplies due to the Virus situation we’re ALL in.To the three gentlemen serving us,Thank you for being available, my bike is my main transportation at this time.
The place is nice, however we waited for 20 minutes to entry, after that we finally entered to pickup our new bike, the guy fit the saddle and gave us the receipt. But we were interested in buying another equipment like helmet, gear and bottles and nobody could help us, when we asked the guy just said: go down stairs and there nobody was attending. So for us it was a very bad service, after purchased a new bike.
Danny was a friendly salesperson, made me feel comfortable and valued! My Specialized mountain bike was expertly set-up and adjusted! Very happy with the experience!
I know times are strange, but when purchasing a $4K bike, expected more out of these folks. Overworked and clearly understaffed, clerk got testy when I questioned an overt flaw on my brand new bike. Tried to convince that ‘that’s just how it’s manufactured.’ He ultimately realized he was wrong and offered no apology for having very rudely challenged me. I bought another version of this same bike at another Bay Area cycle store (they are hard to find) where they spent time with me going over the features and discussing their repair and warranty policies. Nothing of the like at Cognition. They are doing the right thing by allowing only a few customers into the store at a time, but they should have an appointment system. Line wait was nearly an hour to get inside.
I purchased two bikes from them 3 years apart. Service level has been consistent. People are helpful.
Huge bicycle selection! Beginners to pros. Best most beautiful bicycle shop Ive ever been in. Very pleased by the service department and sales staff. A+ experience.
At the start of the COVID pandemic I went here to get new bikes for my kids. Thank goodness I did! They use those bikes daily. They only sell Specialized which are pricey but worth it.
Went here for an advanced sizing on my new Salsa Warbird build. The service was outstanding. Their fitter, Torr, was very experienced and professional and their fit room is well equipped. Torr certainly has the attention to detail necessary to dial a fit in perfectly. I didnt have time to shop around but Ill be back soon. It is a beautiful shop inside with a good vibe.
In the spirit of visiting a local establishment, I took in a family members bike to purchase/install a kickstand, which should have been a simple task. I rode the bike ~3 miles from our house, and upon departing Cognition, I realized that neither the front nor the rear derailleur were functioning properly (the rear was locked in one gear), and both had worked fine on the ride to the store. Upon returning to the Cognition, one of the technicians realized that the rear derailleur cable was pinched when installing the kickstand. The technician wasnt apologetic, and in fact, was argumentative when I requested that he check the front derailleur as well. I also asked if the rear derailleur cable could have been damaged from the stress of attempting to shift, and rather than offer to replace it, he was dismissive of my concern, and sent me on my way. My daughter and I had visited Cognition a couple of times over the last year, and I was considering buying her a new bike at the store. Not only wont we be doing that, but we would never return for service. If the technicians are so incompetent, or dont care about their workmanship, with a very simple task, I wouldnt trust them to do any work. I recommend avoiding Cognition.
Badass bike shop!!!
Very helpful and thorough, although pretty sold out on in-store bikes at the moment.
Popped in this afternoon to ask about saddles, got my sit bones measured digitally, and was then shown the options for my riding style... Selection was limited to everything Specialized has to offer... Nice buy it and try it return policy... Friendly staff seems dialed into bikes and customer satisfaction 😁👍
Great shop have bought 5 bikes from the team ..
After 25 year of cycling and countless shops its hard to impress me, and this shop definitely goes beyond the norm. 2 floors of well organized and clean displays, helpful and knowledgeable staff, and products you actually want to buy. State of the art bike fitting and the full range of Specialized bikes. I try to find excuses just to stop by and look around even when I dont need anything!
I am going to focus this review on the Bike Mechanic service shop at Cognition Cyclery. I believe the heart of any bike shop is found in its mechanics, they build all the bikes and do all the unseen work that supports sales. The mechanic shop at Cognition is incredible. I went to Cognition when I noticed a clicking sound on my Roubaix when going over bumps. I took it in for diagnosis and within 90 seconds Jeff (incredible mechanic) had the bike up on the stand and found the issue. The issue required a warranty claim and Jeff worked diligently on my behalf to get the required details to process the warranty claim. During the process Jeff updated me regularly and helped me understand the repairs and what parts would be required to get me back on the road. For work not covered by warranty the bike shop gave me a quote and stuck to it. If you agree that the mechanic shop is the heart of any bike shop, I believe the heart of Cognition Cyclery is as good as they get.
First class bike shop, We had a nice experience buying a beautiful specialized Levo .
Gave the team at Cognition a call today and after a supportive call I went into the shop to check them out. When I got in there they got me onto a great new set of tires - but that wasnt all. They also happily chatted with a crazy Aussie who had forgotten how much he loves to ride after a two year break away. While I was there they introduced and encouraged me (several times haha) to join their group ride (which I will do next week!) and even know I wasnt riding a Specialized (their primary bike for sale) they treated my Giant like it was important to me and made me feel incredibly welcome. Simply: passionate people, great service, good prices and a nice location - what more could one ask for?!
Super happy and impressed with these guys already, and I havent even had my tuneup yet! I dropped by to make an appointment at lunch time, and came back a few hours later with my bike so they could see if they needed to order any parts in advance. One of the guys said I can do a couple things for you right now to hold you over until the appointment. A few minutes later he hands me my bike back and goes Careful, the brakes will actually work now! What a difference riding home! He oiled the chain, adjusted the brakes, and I swear even the shifting felt better. Cant wait till they do the full tuneup in a couple weeks! Thank you guys for the awesome and friendly service!Edit 2/11/19: Went in with a flat tire, left 20 minutes later with a new tube, both tires inflated, and the chain lubed as an extra surprise. :)
Friendly staff. They didnt try to sell me additional stuff to go with the new bike I was getting. I had done the research and knew what I wanted (specialized pitch comp). The whole interaction was barely 15 minutes. Follow up to pick up the bike the next day was similarly smooth.
Super nice people. Michael Hacke is awesome.
Jeff in service was extremely helpful on several occasions. He is knowledgeable and efficient and polite. Couldnt be happier with the service.
Prices are EXTREMELY expensive, way overpriced! Floor Salesman, Ben comes off as nice, but there is something condescending/judgmental about him that that made my decision not to buy my bike from Cognition Cyclery.
My go-to shop for top end S-works bikes. And now they are further up the peninsula in San Mateo at this location. Everyone is great and friendly. Their mechanics are all top notch awesome. They are the best. My n+1 bike will be from these guys.
Quick, easy and friendly! I went in today with a couple of small issues and they treated me well, and go me Out in less than 5 minutes.I’ll be back for sure
A huge, beautiful bike shop that is almost like a gallery for bikes! They have a complete set of road and mountain bikes, as well as urban cruiser/commuters. Its very clean and organized for a great customer experience. I have been very happy with my bike purchase from Cognition.
The guys at the service side of the shop were really nice and seemed knowledgeable. Definitely going back here if I need anything done
Unfortunately my experience in this place was really poor. Connecting a Di2 battery took almost 2 weeks - and when I pressured to get my bike fixed I got a “you can pick up your bike if you don’t like it” response. Terrible attitude from the service guy, like the worst I have seen. Not only that - it requires another week just to tighten the cassette which got loose. Net, I am not planning on coming back.
The shop itself is veey impressive (a conference room?). Great, friendly staff. Helped me pick out a basic bike for my short commute and other accessories. One of the baskets I got was stuck, so I took it in a week later and got it fixed no problem. 6 stars because they had Motorcycles As the Rush Comes playing one of the times ;)
This place is awesome! It looks great and has awesome bikes all over the place. Make sure to check out their downstairs showroom, it seems like they keep all their cool bikes down there.
Great shop in the San Mateo area! Excellent mechanics and very helpful staff, plus a huge selection of bikes and accessories. These guys know and love bikes (road, gravel, mountain)!
Pros:-Very large and polished looking showroom. If you are a fan of the Specialized brand and willing to pay top dollar, then you will probably love this shop.-Convenience: They are open a little later than most bike shops and located in Downtown San Mateo, close to Caltrain. They are great if you are a commuter who needs an accessory or a minor repair done in a pinch.-Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to take your questions. They dont use aggressive sales tactics and are honest when it comes to your bikes maintenance needs.Cons:Pricing and limited brands: thier very large showroom is almost exclusively dedicated to Specialized, which is known for its products at the high end of the market. You can buy an entry or mid level bicycle from Specialized too, but you will mostly be paying for the prestige of the brand. For budget conscious cyclists who are shopping for bikes at low and middle price points you can get better bikes from most of the other major American bicycle brands (as long as you dont shop for bikes in department stores). Unless you are a big fan of Specialized and have deep pockets, I would recommend buying your bikes from elsewhere.Maintenance: thier maintenance prices are especially expensive and have only gone up since Talbots cyclery closed, around the corner. They quoted me $320 for an overhaul tune of my Specialized Crosatrail, (which I use as my beater). That convenience I mentioned earlier does come at a cost. Maybe if you dont want to leave your S-Works in the hands of just any bike shop you should get your bike worked on here. But if your ride is a little less premium there are plenty of bike shops in the area that do great work for prices that are far more reasonable. Also, while they have done minor repairs for me on the spot without an appointment, anything more than minor does tend to take a little longer.
Jeff in the shop knows the most about bikes... Also it seems as if the service area brings this bike shop back from the edge of being too pretentious... for example, El Jefe single-handedly makes the finest Ben Sucks stickers the world has ever seen.
Stop by to readjust my rear wheel they told me it would take a month maybe a month and two weeks when to cycle tap they did it in 10 minutes
Though charging hell a lot of money at fixing bikes, they never test what they fixed. When u come back after suffering the same problem again, you would get the worst customer service ever. They won’t trust you and you have to fight hard to prove the problem. After they finally agreed and did the fix, the staff would point at another bike and tell you, this is $10,000 bike, yours is $150, but I treat them evenly. Yeah, I feel so peaceful and evenly treated.
Very helpful and friendly staff. I got my bike from MTV cognition shop a couple weeks ago. Fell from bike today, went to San Mateo cognition and they fixed my bike within 5 minutes. Highly recommend!
I’ve had some very good experiences here and some VERY bad ones but the employees are nice and the whole place has a cool atmosphere I would give 3 and a half stars but google doesn’t allow that
Awesome new shop on 4th Ave! One of the sales guys there said they are now the largest bike shop on the west coast! pretty cool that they moved in just down the street from me - check them out! Service guys seem experienced as well
Everyone at Cognition was really nice and helpful. They helped me pick out some tires for my mountain bike. I should also mention that the shop is huge covering all riding disciplines. Highly recommend checking them out.
Killer bike shop, finally! Love the range, selection, and super friendly folks. Great space as well. Highly recommend.
Friendly staff, high end bike shop with a nice selection. Ill definitely be coming back!
I purchased a new Specialized Enduro from Cognition and it was a pleasure dealing with Ben! Everyone here is very friendly and the shop has the fit and finish of an Apple Store. The bike came dialed and was even setup tubeless before I left the shop, something few shops do without asking.
California is Mecca for riding. Local shops are key to keeping the communities and riders together. Place is very helpful. Good job cognition.
I wouldnt go any place else, good product, excellent service what else could you want...............
Pretty sweet service. Sales and techs were extremely nice, patient and helpful.
Outstanding service and just an amazing atmosphere to get all your biking questions answered.
Amazing selection of products within a sleek/comfortable two level layout. The staff are engaging, knowledgable and kind; truly an example of excellent customer service.
I went into the store looking to purchase a road bike but they did not have the bike I wanted in my size. The salesman tried hard to convince me that I would be alright on a size larger frame (which they happened to have in stock). I am sure I could have ridden that larger frame, but would it have fit me well? No. Overall I was disappointed that the salesperson seemed more interested in moving stock than actually selling me a bike that fit.
Bought a gps. It didnt work. They took it back without issues.I will give them more business.Note: The gps would not stay paired to the phone. There are online comments related to the problem. The return was within a few days.
Two wheel pedal powered haven. Best LBS on the Peninsula. Staff are top notch...imho
Thanks for deleting my first post after giving you guys harsh criticism for ruining my wheelset. Thats pretty dishonest and unprofessional of you guys. Never shop here, the mechanic that worked on my bike ended up ruining my wheelset because he had no idea how to lace rims properly. Very sad....
Always very helpful!
Ive had all my 5 bikes worked on at cognition after performance Cyclery closed down and theyve helped me with everything Ive ever needed Ive only ever had one problem here and they fixed it within minutes best place to get your bikes fixed at although at times they can be busy for a couple days at a time
Incredible new bike shop in downtown San Mateo - a few hundred bikes on the floor with one of the cleanest retail environments I have ever seen - check it out!
Best bike shop in the Bay Area. Amazing selection, incredible store, and knowledgeable staff!
Best bike shop on the peninsula knowledgeable friendly and great products.
Bought a tri bike online and got fitt by Torr. The bike wasnt perfect so Jeff and Torr helped me get the parts I need. Great shop!
Really nice place. Love coming here
Whoever picks up the phone does not communicate with the person doing service.
