Interesting little place. Very much a farm that produces cheese, rather than a tourist destination. They produce only 2 types of cheeses of a Portuguese variety ( St Jorge) both aged. The lady didnt understand us ( Guess she was portuguese) and let us try the cheeses before buying. We bought a bit of both, and it was really mild and lovely. Not too expensive at all ( $9 per pound or $13 per pound)
If you are on the cheese trail Do Not Miss this stop its a must try. This was our final stop of the day, we have visited 8 other Cheese Shop/Creamery’s on this beautiful March Saturday. This one is special, you drive down a single lane dirt road, literally passing the cows that produce the amazing cheese that is made on this farm. Drive past Joe’s house and pull over by the barn, there is nothing fancy about this cheese, but it is absolutely amazing. Joe is 80 years young and drives by on a tractor, you get out and enter a small room that fits 3 or 4 people and the nice lady behind a counter. There is one type of cheese aged to three different stages of perfection, its creamy, and complex and progressively more crumbly. Everything is very authentic and delicious. The family is from St. George Island in the Azores, Joe Mattos came to America as a child and has been making cheese his entire life. Its a family owned operation and they make great cheese, not funky, stinky, flavored cheese, just one type of really good cheese. We purchased 1 pound of each cheese an it was under $20 absolutely fantastic. When we got home and broke out cheeses from all 9 NorCal Cheese places that we had visited today and this one stood out. I could eat it every day. What a truly great and absolutely authentic Creamery.
One of the best cheese. 9 months aging is the best for me.
A true gem out in the farmlands. I bring home their cheese every time Im near. Its a major destination for a cheese head.
Support local! This little farm produces some amazing cheese and they sell it at a great price! Stop by to check them out and give them some love.
I had a few pounds shipped to my house in Northern CA during a heat wave. It came quickly and packed in cold-packs. Oh. And it was delicious!
I heard “ not what I expected “. I can tell you it’s not a start of the art mass producing cheese factory. It’s a country farm very rustic and down to earth. Conversation hard to come by due to the language barrier. They are accommodating and have no problem showing my family around. But the cheese speaks for itself. Hands down the best cheese I’ve had. I drive over a hour just to get there. Go there and enjoy the experience for yourself. Don’t forget to bring your sourdough and salami.
Beautiful cheese
They have one type of cheese thats aged different lengths. Its quite good, there are tasters, and the price is good. Its a very small little farm and shop. First time we went there were cows around and the staff told us all about them. Second time was just an in and out stop with staff that wanted to get back to work. Super real cheese makers!
Love the cheese flavors & the beautiful cows.. the staff is very helpful & friendly.
Best cheese! Everyone here is so nice this is my favorite place to buy cheese 😍😍
They make one type of cheese, aged for different lengths of time. But it is awesome! Must visit! Please bring cash along with you, I made a mistake of not bringing more :)
Really tasty cheese and very friendly people. Also, they have duck eggs!
I cant imagine any place more authentic than this. This is the real Sonoma County! Amazing cheese and seems like a great small business/farm. Dont be put off by the shabby look of the buildings, its a working farm after all. $10/lb for the 4mo and $13/lb for the 8mo extra aged
The name says factory, but you are visiting a farm when visiting the cheese maker of Matos Cheese Factory, which only makes one type of cheese, St Jorge Cheese, was purely a destination in itself. This cheeses heritage comes from Sao Jorge, Portugal, the original homeland of the founders Joe and Mary Matos. It involved driving up towards Sebastopol as we were heading towards Iron Horse Vineyard anyway, and was only a little 10 minute drive from California Route 116 anyway that you would be taking. Be prepared to be driving a bit longer than you might think on an all dirt driveway up to the farm buildings. And, you are literally parking in the space amid their barns, there is no parking lot. As you are driving up to the farm you will even pass by the cows who produced the cheeses. As you walk in you might encounter one of the farm cats like we did, or the farm dog as well. The little shop has a little bell that rings as you open the door so that wherever they may be working they then know you are there. The little shop is really more of a counter that only fits a handful of people, though it also offers a glimpse into the much larger aging room. They slice you tastes of a younger and aged version of the cheese. Your whole visit will likely only last 15 minutes or so, but I left with really delicious cheese and the happy feeling of buying directly from the farmers themselves - in fact in my case, directly from the granddaughter of founder Joe Matos himself. They only accept cash or check.
I am a cheese lover from way back and this is truly the best cheese I have ever had. It beats Cabot and all of those other name brand. If you love cheese you need to try this one.
Open 7 days a week. 9a-5p. Delicious artisan cheese. I love supporting this little family business!
Excellent cheese! Super friendly, family-owned operation.
Cheese factory sign pointing to live cows. How could you not love this? Cheese heads: My son was in the Azores this spring and agreed to the authenticity of the St. Jorges cheese. I toted some back to NJ and it survived and was thoroughly enjoyed. Parents: The adventure alone, especially if you have young children is worth the field trip. Ecovores: EAT LOCAL! Support your farms! 1000% YES!
This is truly an experience and a trip of a life time. If you are lucky enough like I am to live close, you can go every day. For anyone else that gets to visit, your will never get such good cheese on an organic farm with such friendly family. This is a working organic farm. If you are looking for kraft processed cheese, dont bother coming to Sonoma County. These folks are salt of the earth. They have cheese, pigs, ducks, goats and eggs Have a great visit.
One thing, two ways, done beautifully. Delicious amazing raw milk cheese.
I have been a customer for years...family tradition I bring this wonderful cheese for Christmas
So simple and the owners are pretty friendly. Cheap and tasty cheese
Nice local cheese. The cows seem very happy to say hi to everyone that visits.
Real working Farm with simple but fabulous Portuguese farmhouse cheese styled of those of the Azores
Best cheese and great price too.
Best. Cheese. Ever. If you like cheese, that is.
Just bought 2lbs to take back to Kabul. Authentic!
An absolute-must to go to if you’re in the area.
Delicious, cheap, simple.
