Overall a good gym with some caveats. Felt the route setting was inconsistent and geared more toward asthetics then function and movement in some cases. For example, we found the harder the routes the better they were. The 10s and 11s we climbed were engaging and well set. However the 8s and 9s we warmed up on were almost harder due to the setting. It also did not feel representative of features we find climbing outside, but that may just be the way gyms are going. Also, the pricing for kids was a bit... expensive. We love to bring our 3 year old climbing to share the stoke, but at her age the duration of her focus is usually quite short. Charging $15 for her where most gyms are free at her age was unfortunate. With all that said, there is definitely something for everyone, and the inclusion of cracks of various sizes is a welcome addition.
I was really impressed by Salt Pump on my first day! I appreciated their welcoming orientation, their grading system, and the solid amount of autobelay routes that they offered. Their friendly staff was so helpful and it hardly felt like my first time at this gym! Their routes were graded appropriately and there was a wide variety. My favorite part was that they included easy routes in their “cave” section - which is hard to come by at other gyms.
Amazing gym!! The bouldering was fantastic and the route grading system is cool and unique. I had a blast on a variety of challenging routes with really nice, fresh hand and foot holds. Ill be back soon!Something important to note is that powder chalk is not allowed here - you can only use liquid chalk. However, THEY do PROVIDE LIQUID CHALK!
Wonderful indoor space divided between big wall (top rope, lead, and crack climbing) and bouldering, with an upstairs workout area also including an additional bouldering pillar as well as hangboards, a treadmill, rowing machine, stationary bike, weights, bench press, and gymnastics rings suspended from wooden framing. Nice, helpful, and knowledgeable staff. The gym sits in front of a beautiful pond, with a deck on the backside for lounging. There is plenty of climbing for all people at all levels, including kids.
Become a member and feel like family. I only knew them for a few months and that was some of the happiest times Ill ever remember. ❤
My favorite of all New England climbing gyms Ive been to! Lots of autobelay routes for if you dont have a partner, and they swap out routes on small sections every couple weeks so theres always new things to try!
Favorite climbing gym! You can always expect problems with fun movement, cool routes (including SPLITTER CRACKS), and amazing service. All of the employees are super nice, their merch is rad. Highly recommend checking out.
Awesome gym! The gym sits in a very cool environment. The routes are nicely set although the grades are pretty stiff. I just tried bouldering but the lead routes also looked nice. And they have beer!
This is a great climbing gym! The staff are really nice. The climber atmosphere is very friendly. The route setting is interesting and fun. Plus, the place has a lot of other cool features such as a grill, porch overlooking a pond, fishing, piano, climber library, and dog friendly. It is great to see the owners wanting to build a climbing community. It is also cool how open to suggestions/ideas the business owner is. By far the best climbing gym I have ever been to!
Traveling from Atlanta to the area and wanted to get in a session. Not only is the facility world class by modern climbing gym standards, the staff and culture in general was great. Very friendly to visitors, no posturing whatsoever like you see at some climbing gyms - just super nice and friendly. Route setting was a lot of fun, and the gym is kid friendly (saw a coach working with students and it all sounded great). I am fortunate to be able to climb regularly at stone summit in Atlanta (world class facility as well) and SP is just as good. Highly recommend to locals as well as anyone traveling.
EDITED: The facility responded to my review (previously 3 stars) and now I’m better informed about the pricing! I had no idea that the day pass included admission to fitness classes! Thanks for taking the time to respond to my review. This place is awesome! Beautiful facility, excellent route setting, and friendly staff :)
The facility is beautiful, well thought out, and offers a variety of options. The staff is super friendly, eager to help and teach, and all have a passion for climbing and bouldering that is infections. Fun classes for kids and helpful classes for adults, including yoga. The location is great, right off of 95. I have recommended Salt Pump to all of my friends and family and will continue to spread the word. Climb on!
I attended a class with my significant other, and we met Sam and Mariah who were both chipper, kind, and instructive. They have a fun atmosphere while still putting saftey as their #1 priority. We will absolutely be attending again.
Fantastic all around climbing gym for sport and bouldering. There is a wide variety of routes, including cracks, that allow climbers to practice a variety of techniques. The style of climbs often reflects outdoor routes. The lead climbing wall is very thoughtful with holds well positioned for good clipping. The book wall lets you freestyle your own routes as well! They also are equipped with rings, campus boards and hang boards for great technical training. Last but not least, the staff are knowledgeable and experienced climbers and super friendly!
Really the best climbing gym Ive ever been to. Staff are super friendly and make you feel very welcome.Facilities accommodate to all levels and climbing styles. The bouldering wall is extremely varied in difficulty and the problems are changed regularly.Location is beautiful to boot. They even have a deck as well as drinks bar and seating.
Staff is awesome, community is dope. This place is epic af. Highly suggest getting a membership! If youre a new climber, the intro class is definitely worth it. They make sure you fully understand and make you feel comfortable learning when you dont.My instructor was awesome. I asked about crack climbing and he showed me the technique, I made it up half way my first shot. Talk about a confidence builder.Youll be pleased!!!
Ive only been a member for a couple of months now, but I cant say enough good things about this place. Im a newcomer to climbing, starting at 40 years of age and still dealing with a healthy fear of heights (still trying to work up trust in the auto-belays!). Although most of the staff and clientele are younger than me, I never feel unwelcome or out of place. Everyone is friendly and anytime I have a question or need beta, there is someone there to help. The place has a great vibe!
Took the intro class and the instructor Eli was great. Very patient and able to teach people of all levels. Ive been back a few times now and the staff is very friendly to a newbie like me. Great facility and worth the cost.
Great time and I felt safe with their covid precautions
Salt Pump is such a fun and amazing rock gym! 45-55 walls, a huge bouldering area, and a real indoor-outdoor vibe with the big windows and location right on the pond. A beautiful facility with great equipment. An awesome Maine rock gym.
Couldn’t ask for more from a climbing gym. Staff are all awesome, friendly, and helpful. They offer free yoga and intro to climbing classes with membership. Very family and kid-friendly, too
Wonderful climbing gym with fun and interesting route setting. Great friendly staff. Plus, the cleanest bathrooms I have seen in a climbing gym anywhere in the US! If you are a climber visiting the area from out of state, this place is worth a side trip to experience!
First off the gym is the most beautiful facility ever - so if you have to climb inside this is the place to be. Variety of routes and climbing classes. Yoga is led by a skilled instructor; its not just a perk to lure you into membership. Genuine, friendly, and helpful staff.
My girlfriend and I took the intro class which incoudes a 2 week trial membership. Its an intimidating sport at first but the session helped introduce the skills and the gym. The staff is very helpful and kind.
Definitely a fun spot to hang out and climb. The staff is great and knowledgeable
Big walls, great problems - tons of lead routes. Super friendly group in a big, beautiful clean space and easy to get to from downtown Portland. Best indoor rock climbing experience in Maine.
Salt Pump is a great gym! Its in a beautiful location, the route setting is great, and the staff are very friendly. Theres something for everyone, no matter your age or experience.
This place has a really nice feel and a welcoming, knowledgeable and humble staff. Plenty of routes with lots of variety and frequent changes. Love it!
The gym was clean with friendly staff. The routes and bouldering ratings were so far off though. Some of the boulder problems didnt have any start tags at all. The v-4s are more like v 6. The book wall sucks to have to study a book before doing each problem. It seems who ever rates the difficulty there has no clue what their talking about. 5.11 there is like 5.12.Each boulder problem should have a tag just with the v rating not this weird system you guys have. The book wall should just be normal problems that change. The gym could be much better its like they dont know how other gyms do it. I thought the gym had potential but it kinda sucked that the ratings were so far from reality. Theres a reason other gyms have a normal system because its professional and works. Your setters seem to love sandbagging and just throwing up whatever. I wasnt psyched at all.
Visited Portland from New York and absolutely loved climbing here. Everyone was friendly, the patio view was great. Challenging + rewarding.
Beautiful climbing facility. It was my first stop on my first visit to Maine. The staff was very helpful and welcoming
Welcoming environment.. good music, friendly & informational staff.
Great facility and staff. Clean, varied, HUGE!! And they have beer!? Why havent you been yet!!!
This place is phenomenal, staff is great and the atmosphere is always positive. Definitely recomend
Beautiful climbing facility located on a cute lake, great routes and friendly staff members will definitely be going back!
Great place! The staff are the best around!
Ive climbed in a lot of gyms, and this is one of the best. Friendly staff, clean gym, & excellent route setting.
Very clean, great community and a great place to climb
Welcoming and gorgeous! The autobelays are great and the staff make me feel at home.
Home climbing gym. Staff and members that genuinely care about your safety and your success as a climber
I go there 3 times a week and love it. Everyone is super friendly and they have a wide range of course difficulty from beginner to advanced.
The place is great! The people are so nice.
Great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, lots of natural light, great bouldering problems, real diversity of members, perks like good lounge spaces and a pretty deck. Best climbing experience Ive had since I left Oregon.
