I havent bought a piano from them (yet), but Im reviewing because James took the time to tell me over the phone that my piano wasnt even worth repairing. (I had actually thought it could be.) While thats disappointing, I have great appreciation for a business who doesnt waste my time and money by coming out to tell me something he knew and could tell me right on the phone.Hence my review. Will update if we purchase something.
I love this place! James is not only incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, he is also a great guy who was very kind to me. Everyone has always gone above and beyond to make my experiences at East Cambridge Piano awesome. I wish I could give them TEN stars!
This is a gem of a business. Excellent service from nice people in a cool, historic location. This was the third place I took my electric keyboard for repair. The first two were mystified by the problem, which not even Kawaii was able to diagnose, but James persisted, and eventually fixed it. Works like new again. Thank you!
I would not recommend for repairs on keyboards. Lacking communication. Shady business tactics (made me feel like I was at a dishonest car mechanic shop). And unprofessional.I really considered not writing a review, because the owner attempted to gaslight and guilt me into believing that I was the one being unreasonable (which ranks in my list of least professional experiences). So what happened was that I asked for an issue to be diagnosed (there was an advertised $75 diagnosis charge). I had done some research online, and said it seemed that a certain part needed to be replaced, but I wanted him to please diagnose the issue to figure out if that part needed to be replaced or if it was something else. He said OK, and that IF that part needed to be replaced, it would cost about $200 for labor and the part. When he said it was ready, the issue wasnt fixed. He had cleaned the existing part, but hadnt tried replacing it. And he wanted to charge me almost $200.When I brought up that the issue wasnt fixed, he told me that he hadnt even noticed an issue. I demonstrated the issue, and he said he thought it was unfixable. I agreed to give him $75 for his diagnosis of its unfixable, but I wasnt going to pay for him doing something he admitted he didnt think could have fixed the problem. Then he tried to make me feel guilty...Really I should have asked for all my money back because the diagnosis he gave was done in a minute afterward without doing anything.Im giving two stars instead of one because the other staff person was quite nice.
Bought a used Yamaha U1 a year ago and have been thrilled with it. While shopping around visited some well known Boston retailers such as Steinert, Williams, and while I had great experiences with them as well, I knew I was in the right place when I visited East Cambridge Piano. The building is not what you would expect, they are located on the third floor of an old building that almost feels more like a warehouse, I didnt think I had even found the right place at first.Prior to my visit, I would never have considered a used piano. However, the models they have are in absolutely mint condition, sound fantastic, and were all hand picked. Its clear the folks that work here are craftsmen and while they are very easy going its clear they take what they do seriously. Felt very secure that I was getting a great product, and I did. Incredibly laid back environment, none of the nonsensical typical pretense you might find buying an instrument like this. I felt like I could have just hung out in there for a few hours.James answered all of my questions and then basically said have at it, play whatever you want and let me know if you have any more questions. Zero pressure. They are coming out next week to do a tuning which was included with the purchase. I had to reschedule but James could not have been more accommodating.Go see this guy and buy a piano from him.
Went in to ask some questions. Lots of friendly advice not to waste money to repair older keyboards. Nice selection of acoustic pianos as well as watching some rebuild of a Steinway piano!
Beautiful shop and great pianos! The owner gave me very good recommendations and the service was perfect. Totally worth it!
This is the place to go if you want to buy a piano. Jay, the proprietor, is knowledgeable and friendly, was responsive throughout and provided excellent customer service following our purchase. They have a great selection of pianos & electric pianos (and a very cool old-school wooden phone booth, that still works!) Its well worth the visit.
Really awesome place, the staff cares about getting you the right piano and not rushing you into buying it, and the delivery service they used was excellent, really efficient and good customer service.
We just purchased a beautiful Mason and Hamlin grand piano from East Cambridge Piano, after looking for a couple of years. The piano is in excellent condition - exactly as James reported. He really knows his stuff and is completely trustworthy. He had no problem with us having our piano technician come and check the piano before we purchased it. We highly recommend James and East Cambridge Piano!
Highly recommended! Bought a Casio Privia PX-770 digital piano here. Nice service, knowledgeable staff, laid-back no-pressure atmosphere. Located in a beautiful old building with the most amazing industrial-style elevator to take the piano down to our car. They seem to carry only Casio brand digital pianos, but the models range from the basic to the most advanced hybrid models. All price ranges available.
Nice website. Plan to visit.
Used car salesman mentality. Really agressive! what can I do to put this piano in your home today (He actually said that!)I had to take a shower when I got home, not just the physical smell of the place but the smarmy attitude.
From start to finish, I had an amazing buying experience at East Cambridge Pianos. The store is located in a really cool historic brick building, and he has a load of pianos all set out ready to be played. For the electric pianos, he matches all of the prices online, and doesnt hurry you through the buying process. I ended up taking about 30 minutes to decide on which keyboard I wanted to get, and during the selection process, he didnt try and upsell me, or critique my choice. It was a really refreshing experience compared to larger chains of music stores where they perpetually hover behind you. When it turned out that it wouldnt fit in my car, he closed the store temporarily, delivered it, and helped me lug it into my house which is above and beyond good service. The owner, James, is a man who has decades of experience with pianos, and is a certified repairman for electric, uprights, and grands. Hes also a really good guy who is trying his hardest to keep a business going despite the giants like amazon snagging potential customers. I would absolutely recommend this store for anyone looking for lessons, repairs, or for purchases based on the quality of service I received.
Friendly service, good price, Nice old building
