I searched nation wide finding someone that would work WITH me on my 300 six cylinder build. I had given up and was going to rebuild mine myself. It’s been 35 years since last build so wasn’t excited about that. Found these guys by mistake. Super great full I did. To say they work with you is an understatement. These guys are a nightmare to work with.. I bought a warranted engine from these guys a year and a half ago.. after 6 months we had to pull the engine out for work. After they returned the engine 6 weeks later, it still didnt work well.. Ive spent the last year jumping through hoops, checking one thing then another at my own expense. Dan the warrantee guy is almost impossible to get ahold of. Ive called multiple times and left many messages to no avail. Save your self the headache and shop somewhere else.

I ordered a long block 3.0 for my ford ranger. Was told 4-6 weeks for delivery. At 7 weeks I was told it only needed gaskets and would be out the next week. At 8 weeks I was told on wed that it was complete and was going to be on the truck headed my way no later than the next day and I would get an e-mail and it would be here on Tuesday. On Monday morning I received a call that they had given bad information and the pistons were supposed to be coming in that day. Then the would have to bore and hone the cylinders and assemble the block. On Wednesday it of week 9 it finally shipped and I was told I would see it Friday. It did not get into town until Saturday and I had to call the freight company on Monday, sitting on hold waiting for them to answer for 48 min, to locate my motor and schedule delivery, which would not be until Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 6 at the earliest!! When the truck arrived for delivery my motor was laying on its side leaning on the rockers. The box around it was obviously destroyed and you can see where the block rubbed through the plastic that it was wrapped in. This is as far as I have gotten so far but I dont know if I can trust that it was built correctly let alone if it is straight and nothing was bent when it fell on its side and slid around the truck trailer.

Warning! Warning! Horrible nightmare of a company that sent me an engine that was ticking from first startup because valves were not adjusted properly and cam bearings loose. I have documentation from Dry Dock Marine, a reputable proven company that has has been doing quality work on my boats since 2018.Dan at S and J Engines said they would stand behind it and assurred me from the start when I explained on day 1! of the engine installation, that they will take responsibility. They talk really nice on the phone, but never actually call back or stand behind their product. I have a business of my own and I know how to treat people and when we make a mistake we own the mistake and we fix the problem and that is why we have a great customer foundation and relationship in my community of Rochester, New York. This company S and J engines literally took my money gave me a false guarantee which they will do to you as well, but will not stand behind their product. This is 100% factual truth of my experience with this company. Anyone that is considering buying something from S and J should contact me prior and I can show you the documentation and exactly what happened. S and J Engines will try anything to get out of being accountable for their mistakes. Dont maje the same mistake I did by trusting them.

The salesman, Dan, is a very courteous and knowledgeable member. Great prices for remanufactured engines and the best warranty around. The company have videos of their inspections and rebuilding process and stringent policies they put into each engine. Fair market for shipping too.

Biggest joke of engine remanufacturing in the business have a customer now that just had an s and j engine installed else where 5000 miles ago and is now knocking tore the engine down cam is chewed up also they heli coiled an exaust stud and drilled all the way threw the head into a coolant jacket and shipped it anyways there warranty is a joke they dont take care of there customers I work for a ase certified car care center Everytime I have had to deal with them its been a nightmare go with jasper they back up there product no questions asked..

I have purchased 3 engines from this company. 2 where OK. The third one paid $2650 had several cracks on the inside and only worked for 30 minutes before water began to sip in to the crank case case. How do I know? I sleeved the block after the failure. Never aging Im buying from these clowns.

This company has always done me right. With four engines to date. My first engine had an issue and sent it back for warranty and they sent me a new one after there investigation. All around a good experience. The second set was excellent in quality from customer service to packaging and general support questions. The latest engine they took the time to verify the engine was exactly the correct replacement. Good value engine, but not the best customer service after purchase. Bought and registered the extended warranty, and haven’t heard from them after my first call about an issue with the engine. Just a problem with the threaded insert they use.

The engine sent was packed well, but damaged indicating it was sent out this way. The crankshaft had been either struck with something, or dropped and so would not mate with the transmission. It also had an incorrect main bolt installed so the oil sump could not be installed. When the office was made aware, they said to not return it for exchange, but to make the repairs by replacing the bolt with one from the old engine and to grind down the end of the crankshaft to make it fit. This required the engine to be removed again costing us time and money. They said they would reimburse us under warranty. The reimbursement did not happen and when the owner was made aware, he said he did not owe us anything.We gave them every opportunity to make it right. So far the engine has not come back with any trouble, hence the three stars vs two. However, the public should be made aware of the poor customer service and of their refusal to honor their warranty.Response to rebuttal:Unfortunately this is not a fictional account aka how attorneys call people liars. It is factual and as your office was already contacted via phone and email, it does not seem as though there will be a resolution. The three star rating will stand. As I stated, the engine is still doing well. Its been a year or so. I wanted to be fair and see how it did. So: one star for customer service, and one star for costing us a few hundred dollars in opportunity cost, wages, and supplies.

I needed to replace the long block on my 1980 Jeep CJ7. My son told me he had purchased a long block from S&J years ago, with no trouble with it to this day. I spoke to Dennis when I called....lucky for me ! He knows what he is doing...I dont. But he handled the calls with confidence in the product he was selling and gave me all info on warranties available to me. He never made me feel bad for asking so many questions. I purchased a 5.4 engine for my 2003 f150 from S and J engines, the original motor had 308k miles on it so they do hold up. I put on about 2k miles and noticed a slight miss, it has 5k on it now. The miss kept getting worse with the engine light on, we thought it might be a bad coil in #7. So we replaced the coil and it did not improve. So I took the truck to a good local shop, they did a diagnostic and leak down test, and found that #7 is only @ 10% and totally misfiring, also number 5 & 8 are partially working due to compression loss as well from the valves. So at this point the motor has to come back out to replace the head. I have not heard back yet from S AND J with what they have to say so I will update as more information unfolds. What I am not planning to do is tie up this truck any longer than possible, it is my work service truck and I am very busy. So for now I am giving only 1 star only because Ryan seemed like a decent guy to deal with and you have to leave something. I am hoping to bump the rating if they allow my shop to diagnose the problem without voiding the warrantee. I worked in a machine shop for years rebuilding and modifying motors, I do know that sometimes things happen and also parts sometimes fail, but so far this motor is not working as advertised due to an internal issue (junk).

Edit: Several months later, and the engine is still running great with no issues.I rarely leave reviews, but I felt compelled to do so here. I received an AMC 242 for my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport, and its a phenomenal engine. Everything was great, from the gasket kit, to the break in oil, to the shipping container (half pallet, enclosed in cardboard.) Engine is running great with no issues. They were great as a company, and worked with me to suit my needs each time it was necessary. I dont plan on buying an engine again anytime soon, but I wouldnt buy one anywhere else.

I rarely write reviews, let alone long ones, and especially not negative ones. But I hope I can save some future individual months of time and thousands of dollars by dissuading them from purchasing an engine from S&J Engines. The folks I interacted with were kind, responsive, and competent, but the engine they sent me was defective in three separate and substantial ways, ultimately costing me thousands of dollars and months of lost time.On September 1, 2020, I purchased a 6.9-liter IDI diesel engine from S&J Engines for $3,419. It was the most affordable long block I could find and S&J’s warranty made me think their engines would be built to a high standard. They also have a large number of positive reviews on Google. I purchased the engine, as well as a $250 “Total Assurance Warranty.”They did not ship the engine until over a month later, allegedly due to difficulty in sourcing piston rings. I paid $175 for shipping. And another $175 to ship my block back to them in order to receive my core deposit back. (My running total now $4,019.)Over the next month, my local shop, Stroker Diesel, stripped down my old block, assembled the new engine, and put it in my truck. It wasn’t until they were filling the truck with oil that they learned the rear main seal was thrashed. They had to pull the engine, and replace the seal that S&J provided (parts were only $75, but labor incurred for another engine pull was significant).Once the engine was back in the truck and full of fluids, the mechanics started the truck, only to have one of the anti-freeze plugs immediately fall out. We contacted S&J, and they were very responsive and apologetic, stating that the plugs had been installed using a sub-standard sealant, and that all eight would need to be replaced, thus requiring another engine pull. My warranty here saved me $2,055 in parts and labor, but S&J refused to pay for “taxes and fees” and so I had to pay $401 for this repair.With the new freeze plugs in the engine, and the engine back in the truck, the mechanics took the truck out for its first shake down. Halfway down the block, both head gaskets broke.S&J gave me two options: (1) return the engine to them for a rebuild (at no added cost), or (2) return the engine for a refund of the purchase price of $3,419, and they would send me my old block. Having seen the quality of their builds, I opted for the return of their block in exchange for my old block.Upon sending S&J their block and receiving my old block, I was back to square one. It was now early December. I had spent $4,019 on an engine, warranty, and shipping, $3,125 in labor, and $401 to fix freeze plugs in an engine that I ultimately sent back to S&J (a total of $7,545). Consequently, after receiving my $3,419 refund from S&J, I had lost $4,126 and three months, only to be back to square one.My local shop rebuilt my engine, then assembled and installed it, which ended up costing me another $9,000.Throughout these past few months of stress and anxiety, S&J Engines has proven to be responsive to phone calls, apologetic about their mistakes, and perplexed by these issues. However, at the end of the day, no amount of positive customer service can make up for a complete loss of over $4,000 and three months of no truck.

Ordering was quick and easy, the piece was done a week before they thought it would be and their customer service was FANTASTIC. Hopefully we dont have to buy another anytime soon, but if we did wed 100% order from S&J engines.

We had a really good experience. Our motor blow up but when we were showed what caused the engine to fail which had nothing to do with their work we were very happy with their service. We were charge a more then fair pice to give us a new engine.Everyone in the office are very nice and helpful.I would recommend this company if you are looking for an engine.They took extra time to make sure we understood what caused the failure and even showed the failure site on the engine to us.

These guys are a great rebuilder of engines, but they somehow managed to lose some hard to find pieces from a rare engine that I sent them. They did make good financially for the lost parts and this was in the beginning of the covid outbreak too. They have done around 4 or 5 motors for my shop, at least 3 were custom builds on original engines with no problems so I would highly recommend them

BUYER BEWARE! This has been the worst company I have ever had to deal with. I bought an engine for my 66 Mustang and within the break-in period (500 miles) the head gasket started leaking. I called the warranty department (Lane) - it was extremely hard to get a hold of him or even get a call back. I was finally told that a new gasket would be sent to the shop for replacement. About another 1000 miles later and I noticed oil coming out of the distributor which means that the crank case is getting pressurized and within a day it started and ran like it had dropped a valve. I shut it off and called Lane; after 3 subsequent calls he called me back a week later and I was told to drive it to the shop in its current condition. Lane asked for the engine to be returned for inspection and after a month I was told that the warranty was void due to a fuel or timing issue that caused the #6 cylinder to detonate. I asked Lane to send the engine back to the local shop so they can rebuild it (this way i knew it would be done correctly) . The engine came back in parts thrown in a box and after the shop looked at the engine said it looked like the ring on the #6 cylinder blew out due to pressure from the crank case. So now, I am not only out of the money spent to buy the engine and the extended warranty (what a joke) but now have to pay to have the engine rebuilt.Update: I was contacted by the owner of the company and he stated he wanted to get the facts. My thought is why didnt they get the facts before they denied my warranty claim and then lying saying that I hung up on him. Its funny that I get a call about trying to find a solution after the review was written; what about the 1.5 months of phone calls before the review? The owner started to spout the same lines about why the claim was denied and that is when I told him that I was done with the company and wanted nothing more from them and we both hung the phone up at the same time. Im not going to banter about this and go back and forth. I know what happened and so do they, end of story.

Bought two engines from them for different project cars. Fast turn around. They send you all the gaskets and start-up oils. Never had a problem!

I bought a motor home from a friend and the motor was from S&J Engines, and Chevy 454. It was started every two weeks and a fresh oil change, I ran it 20 minutes and then headed down the road. After 3 miles it stopped working. I got it towed into a shop and they said the engine had seized. They won’t warranty the motor even though it only has about 4000 miles on it, if that. Very disappointing in the enjoin that they put in.

Where to start.... I purchased two identical engines (5.7L Hemi, one in Sept 2019 and Oct 2019) with the EXTENDED WARRANTY for customer vehicles from S and J based on the recommendation from my local Napa store. The first engine has been fine (fingers crossed). The second engine though has been a completely different story.. The second engine had a noticeable loud tick on its TEST DRIVE! Were talking the first 50 miles of drive time. We found the issue to be coming from the #1 cylinder. Per S and J warranty my tech pulled the cylinder head to change the lifters and found the cylinder walls RUSTED. So, we consulted with S and J again (at this point it NOVEMBER). We sent the engine back to S and J, where they try and say that the rust is normal... We go back and forward with S and J for a month. They finally send us a replacement engine in January. Which is great, we can finally get our customer on the road. It was a 3 month process for a vehicle that never even left the shop. BUT it doesnt stop there. As of today its been almost 5 months and I have yet to see any kind of warranty reimbursement for labor (they wont cover fluids, even though the truck ran for under 50 miles- so guess who gets to eat that cost?). 5 MONTHS!!! Ive talked to 4 people about reimbursement, and its always the same Im so sorry, let me talk to (*insert last S and J employees name here), and I will get it handled today, one guy even told me they sent a check out in March... still nothing. I understand that people make mistakes and parts fail. What I dont understand is not standing behind your product and getting ANY issue resolved in a timely and professional manner. This whole process has taken 7 month and its still not over.

We had a 429 Cadillac freighted to us in Melbourne AUS. We have had nothing but issues with this motor including: exhaust leaks through holes S&J blocked, internal bearing issues leaking valve guides etc. the engine needs to be removed and reconditioned after only 4000 Miles. Never overheated and never ran without oil. I will update what the shavings are that we found in the oil filter in due course but it doesnt sound good. Completely disappointment.

Have purchased over 30 remanufactured long blocks from them and not had any problems so far.

Worst experience with any company for any type of service I have ever had. When I first dropped my motor off to have the machine work done we were told 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I called to check and see how it was going and I dont think it had been touched. After that I called repeatedly to check on progress and it was always oh yeah we will have it done this week. Finally in the 6th week it was ready for pickup. When I stopped to get it some of the work I was told would be done hadnt been done. They failed to tell me the cam was shot but they did order a new one( that wouldnt be there til the following Monday) I had 2 rods that were bad and Lane had assured me over the phone that they had found 2 replacements. When I got home there were only the originals in the box. Lane cannot be trusted with anything he says. I would never, never, never have them do any work for me or ever again. Please respond owner I would like to see you explain this one.Update:The owner Casey contacted me and to make it right found me 2 new rods, got the new cam and lifters and says he can have it ready same day. He covered the costs of all this and was very understanding with all of my concerns. The machine work looks to be good. I was very frustrated with these guys but Im glad Casey contacted me right away and admitted they had some things go wrong.

We shipped our engine in, being told 2 days there, 3 days to build and then 2 days back. After 7 days I called in and was told engine not even started yet, but I could have overlooked that. Once we received the engine back, the timing chain tensioner was replaced, but was damaged. I have had to remove the motor, replace the tensioner and then find out the warranty only covers, parts and labor up to $800. The labor to remove the engine is over $1000, so not sure what is going on. Ryan in sales does not return calls and the engine was purchased via Engines Unlimited, yet they have not stepped in to help either. Very unhappy. Losing time and money over a poor rebuild.

We purchased a 350 short block for our Suburban and these guys are great. We dealt with Scott and he has been excellent in helping us get the engine we wanted and carefully explained everything as well as what was expected of us. Our engine is in and purring away. Our only hiccup was with the shipping company Estes...be aware if delivery is residential it can be a challenge. We researched S&J after a good friend recommended them. He had purchased an engine from them a few years back and is very happy. We will be recommending them to anyone we run across that needs a new engine.

They all helped me immensely.The mechanic at the shop had used the wrong gasket on the oil pump so it wouldn’t hold oil pressure due to it suckling air so S&J had me return the motor on which they even paid for the shipping cost both ways ! Ive purchased four motors from them in the last year and a half, and have been pleased with the service and workmanship. The prices are incredibly reasonable (probably what you get from WA with no state income tax. Lower overhead = lower cost of business). Anyways, at the end of the day, theyve been upfront with costs, shipping, core charges, warranty information, etc. I dont blame any company for having fine print for warranty. There are stipulations on all warranties, everywhere. Its to keep the customer safe, for specificity, and to keep the company safe from potential predatory customers. Ill continue to continue buying motors from S and J whenever I need to.

Purchased a 5.4l for my 2010 Ford F150 with there 7 year 100000 mile warranty in August of 2016 and have had the worst experience I have ever had with a company it is now the end of February 2017 and the 4th engine has now failed keep in mind in the fine print says they will cover up to 1700$ in labor leaving me with more labor cost than the engine itself cost and once again no transportation the warranty isnt worth the paper its printed on insisting on doing all the repairs themselves otherwise the warranty is void buyer beware DO NOT PURCHASE AN ENGINE FROM S & J it may just be the most miserable experience of your life. 0 stars

Ok, heres the deal. I live in Tacoma, WA. I ordered an engine online around noon on a Wednesday. I got a call about 5 minutes after I ordered from S&J just to make sure I was getting what I needed. The engine arrived the NEXT DAY. Thats customer service. Besides, they have the best warranty out there... and their customer service rocks. Dont waste your time looking around for the best deal.... S&J is the only place to buy engines! The BEST!

Very easy to deal with; all questions answered quickly. Engine delivery exactly as agreed. Scott was very accommodating on initial contact.

They use to be real good. I dont know what happened. I just got done reading a bunch of reviews and totally agree with most of them. We just experienced a head gasket failure on a Toyota engine. We sent the old one back to them and they say if failed due to a lean run condition. Well, the short and long fuel trim numbers are perfect. The oxygen sensor shows normal. Tailpipe 4 gas emission test is normal. The heat tabs on the cylinder head and block are intact and uncompromised. There are no fault codes or have there ever been any fault codes. The original engine was replaced due to mileage and oil use. The factory engine went over 230k miles but theirs just made it 17k miles. We have purchased several engines with good luck in the past. Hate to say this was enough to make me start shopping elsewhere.

Well after the install of my new engine i noticed an oil leak two trips to my technician and a bunch of time and money spent, the front crank seal was found to be installed wrong. In the process he also found a defective hydraulic belt tensioner, this alone could have caused the LOSS of the whole motor.
