Really great shop. They have just about everything you could need and very fair prices. Lots of bike shops will have really elitist staff but not here! Even if you’re completely new to cycling the staff are knowledgeable and willing to help.
Update: A kind guy from this store reached out to me very quickly after my initially negative review regarding a bad service experience I had at the store. He took in my bike and fixed all the problems, and apologized. Bike is great now, and the people in this store do take bikes seriously. The odd bad experience was probably due to very high demand.
Ill start by saying, you can feel confident that the experienced techs take their reputation very seriously and will do all they can to ensure you receive the service you deserve. An employee at the bicycle shop, personally went well out of their way to ensure that I got my bike returned to me operating as well as humanly possible. I had a very rough and frustrating experience the first time I took my bike in. This lead to me not feeling very confident in the service provided. At the time I took my bike in for service, they were short staffed and having a tough time with covid.I left a 1 star review explaining my experience and what happened. They took my review very seriously, personally reached out to me, and did everything they could to make it right. This shows to me they take their reputation very seriously and also take their customers very seriously as well.
Very attentive and great staff, got my drive train replaced in no time
Really dishonest business. I was told my repair was going to cost in the range of $20-$25, which is fair for a broken cable for my gear shifter, but they found more broken stuff inside the bike to fix without letting me know, charging me for a total of $56, which is more than double the estimated cost. I take issue with the fact that I was given no notice before this repair took place. You dont get to take someones bike and fix whatever you want and then randomly charge them. I sure as well will never come back and will discourage as many people as possible from coming here as well, especially all my biking friends.
I had lost all hopes for my gotrax e-scooter. I gave it one last shot at the bicycle shop and it came back to me within a day, looking like new with insanely good servicing. The staff and the people are the nicest in the whole city. The pricing blew me away cuz they only literally charged me 15$ for the entire repair. Needless to say, 10/10 recommended!!! Thanks a lottt
Update: I brought my bike back to the shop to get re-tuned and I’m really glad I did. My bike is running perfectly now, it’s performing much better than it ever has and I’m very happy with the service. It does feel like they made a genuine mistake with my original service, I should have brought my bike back immediately to fix it. Thank you for setting this right!I will be up front and say I don’t know much about bikes. What I do know is that my brakes needed replacing and my bike was skipping gears so I thought I would bring my ~7 year old bike in for its first tune up. Trusting their knowledge of bikes, I let them talk me into replacing the cassette, drive train, cables, and shifters on the bike which was a big up charge from what I was imagining the tune up would cost. I just got my bike back and not only does the bike still skip gears, its actually much worse than before and the new brakes drag on the wheels. I had to teach myself how to calibrate the derailer and adjust the new brakes which is exactly what I thought I was paying them to do with the tune up. 2 hours of my own time later, my bike is back in working order and still skips gears a bit. I don’t really notice a difference in the new equipment they told me I should get except the brakes, which I knew needed replacing.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff, these people enjoy bikes as much as we and will get you sorted out and back in the saddle.
Super friendly and knowledgeable staff! Ask them anything and theyll try and help you understand. Everyone should feel welcome coming here to make sure their bicycle is in tip top shape or even looking to buy a new one.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff that are available to help you with any of your bicycle needs. Their prices are fair and selection of products is impressive. One stop shop for state college cyclists of all kinds.
It was my first time here today. I was able to relay the issue in advance over the phone, and when I came in, everyone was following COVID-19 protocol. Service was quick and friendly, and the price was reasonable.
Had the best in-depth tune-up ever recently. The bike rides so incredibly well, as if the bike pedals and moves in silently smooth motion. Its unreal. I recommend the full scale tune-up where they do all new cabling in addition to standard tune-up stuff, especially if it has been a while since your last tune-up.
I am new to the area and was trying to find a great bike shop! And the Bicycle Shop does not disappoint. They have a friendly and knowledgeable staff who are eager to help. I was also impressed that they don’t try to up-sale you. In several stops, they helped me find only what I needed. I highly recommend The Bicycle Shop.
We went in for bike parts and customer service was beyond 5 stars
It was very nice place staff there is so kind.
Great local shop! Lots of product options and accessories in stock, great service and very helpful people.
These guys know bikes! Good selection of road/gravel/mountain bikes/kids/exercise bikes. Plus parts and accessories, and a really great service/repair department!
I leave this review to share my experience at this store. I have left all of my bike repairs here for the past three years and spent a large amount of labor costs to make electric bicycles. But what came back to me was disaster. Last few weeks ago, I visited to repair the bike and the main purpose of repair was to replace the rear tire. It was necessary to attach a tire suitable for a special electric bicycle, and there was no problem with the original tire. The tire just was not suitable for heavy-weight electric bicycles.I had to ask a repair technician for the cost (which was a lot of price difference after repair when I built the electric bike in the past) and she told me it cost about 40 dollars.. I came back to the store for my bike a few days later and first! the cost was $60 and I thought it was not a big deal if I could just repair it.After the payment, I told the male staff to return the tire that was originally fitted. He said that the tire was unavailable and I did not understand. Because the old tires (Continental Grand Prix 4000s II) were almost new! I wondered when I came back home and I thought so. Because it is not an old tire, it is not necessarily a problem. I feel guilty about coming back to the shop again and told the store manager that the original tires were close to a new one. The store manager told me that he had a high school technician and did not know it. I knew it! I lost credit and trust in the store. There is no communication in the small shop at all. The manager told me that store did not have the tires of the same model but that he would provide the tires of the other models, but his attitude was very unpleasant and unpretentious. All of sudden, the store manager told me to leave the shop or leave a contact memo!! The store manager was not able to deal with the emotions with arguments and rantings. Laughter only came out. I felt very uncomfortable and bad.My point it that even if there was a problem with the tires, I think they should check them directly because for the customer, the tire is almost new and doesnt seem to be a problem with these premium tires. This place has a bad after service. There were frequent minor communication problems with bicycles and the cost of repairs was different from what I expected and makes me spend more. The service in the technical part was OK, but the customer service seems to be real bad. Another proof of it was not to welcome me as a customer who goes in and out only for the cost of labor. When I entered the store, I sometimes felt that way as a customer. So I was sometimes reluctant to go to the store for repair.
I can not say enough great things about this place. I took my Specialized Shiv training bike in for a mechanical to electronic groupset upgrade (way too many miles had been put on that groupset, it needed changed) and they were extremely accommodating. Everything was well explained through email and the staff was super nice to me throughout the whole process. The entire staff is amazing and they explained everything I needed to know about my new groupset when I picked it up. I will not hesitate to return any time I have an issue.
The guys are great, knowledgeable and friendly. Always good to come back to a hometown shop.
Knowledgeable staff and generally good stock of bikes and accessories. Like most shops, prices are typically full retail unless something is on clearance sale.
Im not a pro or even a hobbyist - but I do rely on my bike for daily commutes. Sometimes damage and accidents happen. I have not had any experience with other bike shops, and dont feel the need to, because The Bicycle Shop has taken care of everything I couldnt do on my own. Sparkie, whos done the assessments for me, has always been friendly, honest, and competent. I have found the prices for servicing my entry-level bike to be reasonable and never felt overcharged. Obviously I hope I wont need many repairs in the future, but if I do, I know where to go. I can recommend this shop without reservation.
I purchased a second hand bicycle from here (which looked completely new) and its works well. They are very handy in repairing equipments.
Why would you go anywhere else, seriously? This shop is the best, all around.
Super friendly and helpful workers, great prices. Great selection of both mountain bikes and road bikes. They sell all kinds of accessories that help you customize your bike the way you want it! I have had them service bikes before and just bought a new bike from them today and I was told the first tune up was on them!!
Always fun to see the crew.
The people here are super nice and super friendly. I would highly recommend going there for any bike repairs. They also have a decent collection of second hand bikes at the right times of the year. :)
They were very nice in helping me fix up my bike. I needed air in my tires and thought that I had two popped tires. They fixed it happily and didnt charge me for the time (since it was such a small fix). Thanks guys!
The staff here is amazing. I had my bike tuned up a month ago but for some reason my shifters began to stick again after a few rides. Brought my bike in today and talked with the mechanic as I watched him take apart my paddles, grease it up real good, and fix the issue in 15 minutes. He gave me some good advice dealing with rust as well. Awesome customer service.
Great selection and staff.
Called The Bicycle Shop several times with questions regarding my first bike purchase and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable every time. Went in today on a Sunday and purchased a new mountain bike from Larry. He was very helpful and they gave me a Great Deal! I will definitely buy all my future bikes from these guys.
We were vacationing in the area and needed some repairs done to a childs bike after a bit of a crash. Super fast, did it while we waited and the price was better than expected. Awesome customer experience and we ended up buying a bit of gear while we were there so it was a win-win!
First time ever stepping into The Bicycle Shop, I was just happy to see dogs running around. I was even happier with the price and quality of the service! I brought my old bike in because I thought my headset was busted and I KNEW my bottom bracket needed replacing. A mechanic had a look- he assured me the headset was fine and simply greased and tightened the handlebar stem (for free) and told me he could fix the bottom bracket, just leave it over the weekend. Come Monday, the bike rides like brand new, with a new bottom bracket and a greased chain, and I also noticed my brakes were adjusted too!10/10 will recommend
Friendly and knowledgeable crew. Specialized bikes are the best (very purpose built bikes) and they are the only local dealer here. The past 5 months i bought a Fat boy (white) and Camber 29 (black/red) here. Great bikes great services definitely recommended. I first bought a bike from Walmart for $150 and went through 4 of them the past 6 months. Definitely worth getting a good bike if you commute to work and school and for any other reason.
Great bike shop! Theyre so quick, and everyone is very friendly. Every time Ive had a problem with my bike they always explain why, and what I should do to avoid such problems. They always offer to do anything I want with my bike, and always explain why they would or would not suggest such a change. Theyre dog friendly, I live on the same block and sometimes just go to play with the dogs, everyones so friendly. Great bike shop!
Came across this place to rent a few bikes for the afternoon while in town. The staff was very helpful hooking us up and Steve took the time to map out a location that would meet our diverse riding experiences.
Let me say first, I have no doubt the people at the bicycle shop know bikes well. Everyone was polite to me as well. But, it was probably a bit high-end for my purposes. I had a flat I needed fixed. Time = 10 minutes. Cost = $19. For me, that was pricey, but then again, this is probably the type of place you would go for bigger problems. I guess I paid specialists for a non-specialist job. My bad, but heads up if youre in my shoes -- get the tools and fix your own flat tires!
The Bicycle Shop has always given me great service. New shoes today. Not hurried by the manager to make a decision. Very knowledgeable mechanics too.
This is a great shop everyone there is super helpful and they have a great selection of bikes for all price ranges. They will let you take any bike for test ride, and they will help you find the bike for your money. Their gear selection is great and reasonably priced. By far its the best bike shop in State College.
This shop is amazing. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Great selection of bikes.
Very helpful staff
Very knowledgeable and kind staff, professional work and inexpensive. Thanks!
Polite, understanding staff and great prices.I use my bike to get to school and back (not for racing, exercise, etc.). Simply put, I dont treat it nearly as well as I should, as Im only traveling about four miles a day. Staff members at other bike shops around town were rude and seemed offended that I wasnt regularly deconstructing and cleaning my bike, even though I explained that Im not a serious bike rider. At the Bicycle Shop, the staff was nothing but nice. They werent trying to pad the sale with unnecessary, expensive items. When I apologized for the state of my bike, they laughed and assured me that it was really no problem. They charged me a total $15 to replace a flat tire, including the tire tread, tube, and labor. The guy that did the labor explained what caused the flat and did some maintenance (greasing the chain, fixing the shocks on the seat, etc.) for free. This place is great, for people serious about bike riding and for people like me who frankly arent. This place has my business for the foreseeable future.
Drove in from Altoona area on a Sunday with a bent chain. I really wanted to ride that day and of course most shops arent open on Sunday. I wasnt expecting them to get to it, best case scenario they would have a chain in stock and Id do it myself, but they took the bike right away. I was out the door about 10 minutes later with a brand new chain installed. Shouldve spent more time in the store because they had a ton of accessories and bikes to check out while I waited. Ive lived a few different places and seen many bike shops; this one has that clean, organized, but also lived in feel that I love. Ill definitely be back.
Best bike shop in town. Large selection of bikes, accessories, and clothes. Ive purchased two bikes from here, and am always happy with how weve been treated. They even offer a bike maintenance class in the winter, that was great!
Absolutely the best place to go for all cycling needs. I travel over an hour to get there and have never regretted it
The crew at the bicycle shop worked with me for several hours to help me to; first find my confidence on a bike and then to help me find the bike thats perfect for me. They were always friendly and patient and happy to work with me.
Wow what can I say? If you want to visit a true down home bike shop that makes you feel at home even in a college town this is the place to go. The store manager has forgotten more about bikes then most will ever know. The owner, although a bit chatty, can talk about everything from gear ratio on your new bike to how to bake a carrot cake (do you know how many calories are in those things). The mechanics are all top notch and will always bend over backward to get you riding again, even if that means pulling in at 5 and trying to make the 5:30 group ride. They practice what they preach too, there is a guy in there during the day that I always see riding his bike into work, rain or shine, 70 degrees or 15, he is an animal!. This is a great shop take time to look around they have more inventory then interbike in Vegas. Great place, great vibe, great selection and wonderful people. Go here.
An absolutely fantastic place to shop. The staff there will bend over backwards to help customers and are extremely friendly and honest. These guys deserve the highest recommendation.
The Bicycle Shop guys are always available to help me out with my bike. Sparky has hooked me up with small fixes free of charge on at least three occasions in the last three years. I owe my college mobility to this dude.
Condescending tone. Fear appeal as primary means of educating. Repeatedly told me I would die if I did not do their recommended adjustments. I understand policy ensues you cannot fulfil certain requests but the way/tone in which it was handled was much less than professional.
Best bike shop in town! Staff are overall very friendly and helpful, even if you are clueless. Ive found the staff at some of the other local bike stores can be rather condescending to beginners (coughFREEZETHAWcough). Concerning bike repair/service, the bike shop has great prices. Instead of trying to fix everything and ring up huge tab, they tell you what is and is not urgent. They also perform minor adjustments free of charge as long as they know youre a returning customer. And of course, they have the biggest selection of new bikes and a great fleet of demos/rentals with great prices too. All in all a place Im happy to patronize.
Awesome people, Great service!! They have alot of selection. Pretty much anything I would need too!
Ive had a great experience with this shop so far. They are always very friendly and help me if I need anything. But I am giving them 4 stars for their prices, you can find much better prices on many items on the internet. I know that is an inherent downside to brick and mortar, but it nonetheless still exists.
Very nice shop big selection of new and used bikes along with.Very knowledgeable staff.Purchased my son a used bike and they were very helpful in helping me pick it .They go over the bikes before putting them out and went over it again right before purchase.
I had an excellent experience here. I came in with a known broken derailer and potentially rear shifter on my bike. Sparky the mechanic was able to tell me any other problems with the bike and its cost to fix them along with risks to not. I like how I was not fooled into repairing things that didnt actually need repaired but was made aware of the severity. The service was extremely fast. And the total bill was way under what I expected to pay. I will recommend them to anyone I know who needs bike sevice for there, great turnaround, prices, quality and environment. Far contrary to what I hear about Freeze thaw.
Friendly staff and quick serviceEdit: also full of local cyclists who are more than willing to give advice on bike safety and accesories
Great service and always willing to answer questions and, if asked, make recommendations
Great place! Super friendly!
Amazing staff. Knowledgeable and helpful. Great to have a great local bike shop.
Great service and super friendly. I also love the selection of bikes.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Went in to have some tubeless winter tires mounted (I -do- have tubeless compatible rims) . Adam did the work. Picked it up, next day front tire was fine, rear tire had zero air. Brought it back in, they tried a second time, I picked it up, next day it was totally flat again. I brought it back for the third time and Adam tells me that you just cant run tubeless tires in the winter, and thateverybody knows that, and Im sorry it wasnt explained to you. I only recommend going here if what you need them to do is easier than mounting a tire.Update: He also angrily called me from the shop phone this same day to complain about naming him in this review.Update 2: I seem to be unable to reply to the reply of my review, so here is what would go there if i were able:Mr. Scott, I should start by saying that prior to this Ive had nothing but good experiences with the bicycle shop. Id mention specific individuals that have been awesome to work with by name but...here that appears to be problematic. The name issue was a result of my doing a copy and paste off the shop website. Accidental, and thats why I corrected it as soon as this was brought to my attention. Now, a piece by piece response to your response (possibly out of order):Its great of you to offer to refund my money, but honestly thats the smaller part of getting stranded twice and having to arrange alternate transportation, and take additional time off of work to come in repeatedly to get this addressed.you were never told that tubeless dont work in winter in this context I am using work as function correctly and reliably. I believe the actual phrase was they can be really tricky and this contexted with saying the only way to get it to work on my bike was by putting in tubes, empirically speaking, they did not work, and that is functionally saying they cannot be made to work.Regarding the riding of the bike to distribute the sealant: the first day I was told that had already been done. The second time I rode the bike home for about 40 minutes.Tubeless is very low pressure and depends on very close tolerance between the tim and tire. Any moisture and a freeze can cause a leak Unless a leak is already present and they failed to initially seal at the shop, there should be no moisture in the tire there aside from the sealant used by the shop. 30psi doesnt sound like very low pressure, especially with no rider on it to cause deformation of the tire. The fact they held for a week in the shop means they initially sealed.Regarding leaving the bike outside in extreme cold ALL THE TIME, the first time was pretty chilly, I think it got just a bit under 0F. The second time, it was probably just a couple degrees below freezing. Im not from PA but I dont think that qualifies as extreme cold. If youre going to use a sealant that requires that people store their bikes inside ( and I guess, if I follow this...ride them inside as well) then this should definitely be covered in a disclaimer. But thats not the issue (see below). The biggest issue with all of this is whats missing in terms of logical troubleshooting. The front tire held fine. This means, that without question, the difference in what happened to the back tire is a result of either something that was done differently mounting it, or something different about the tire, valve or the rim they were going onto. Every reason given above, in addition to having some issues that I pointed out, is about general properties of the tires, which clearly were not in play due to the fact the front tire held fine.Everyone else Ive met at your shop has been great. But the blatant hostility I got from him when he called last night makes me not feel confident getting work done at your place while hes there. At a minimum, I recommend that if you have an employee that needs to contact a customer for whatever reason, but is clearly emotional (regardless of the reason) that you have someone else do it for them.
Much cheaper than Freeze thaw, always get my work done here
Twice I went in with a broken bike, twice I left with a working bike. Need I say more.
Great and friendly service, extremely helpful and great selection of bikes and accessories!
Always great at taking care of everybody who comes in
Outstanding bikes with even better service. Grant is a true professional.
Awesome service 👍
Great service great shop.The best
They are always polite and fair to their customers. I always enjoy going there to get my bike fixed or tuned up because of how pleasant an experience it is every time!
Too be fair, the mechanic, Sparky, is really good. However, the customer service is really poor. They are argumentative, defensive, and talk over you. The reviews have passed off their uppity, condescending attitudes to being enthusiasts. I don’t buy it. I’m super enthusiastic about my bike and I’m not rude to someone who doesn’t know as much about it. Or, just universally, I’m not rude to someone who asks me for my help!!Donja, had absolutely no clue what she was doing. She never answered a question directly she talked around my questions acting like she knew what she was talking about. Jim, the service manager, was rude and made fun of my purchase choice (because he didn’t have what I wanted in stock so he told me it was “horrible and didn’t know why anyone would buy it anyway”).I race Ironman. I spend thousands on my bike, thousands on my wheels, thousands on my components, you get the picture. I say that to say this…I will NEVER go back to them. Which sucks cause Sparky is a fantastic wrench.
I drove 1 hour for them to tell me that my drivetrain needed replaced and was not covered under warranty. They told me only the frame and handlebars where covered. So when I initially called about my bike needing a crank arm replacement, you would think these people would say well we only cover the frame and handlebars under warranty. So I drove an hour for something that could have been told to me over the phone. Bad customer service.
Summary: Clerks are very kind and sells good bike
Great Bike shop and super awesome guys! We stopped by on our way to NJ from our biking trip riding Allegrippis Trails ... Well be back next year!
Decent store that focuses more on display than selection. Second best bike shop in town.
Very Polite and very friendly staff! :)
Awesome job great people !!
Erik and his employees are amazing
Nice bikes, nice folks
Went there, got a estimate on my bike repair
They have treated us well for 20+ years.
Excellent service
Always helpful and friendly
Best customer service ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
