I teach a special needs drumline in Illinois. I ordered 3 marching bass drums in the spring still havent recieved them. Troy never picks up very bad on returning calls and following up. They cashed our check we have no drums. We have had to cancel 3 performances because of not having the bass drums. We ordered snares last year and had great service. But this order has been very bad service.
I play flute and saxophone 🎷and ordered a hard to find straight alto.Troy at Jim Laabs is totally kool😎; service and knowledge were on point for me over the phone. Packaging was excellently shipped. Bravo Zu(job well done)❗
I ordered a beautiful new saxophone on Friday, and Monday, it was here. Packaging was incredible and they definitely took extra care. I spoke a few different times via email and they were always courteous and prompt. I am in LOVE with my new instrument from Jim Laabs!
If there is one review you’ll want to read, this is the one.My wife and I were moving back to Wisconsin. We have a baby grand piano, so it seemed natural to give Jim Laabs a call for help moving it. Together, we all made sensible plans to have this task handled, and things seemed on track.Unfortunately, Jim had missed the deadline to deliver the piano. When my wife contacted Jim asking the status of our piano, Jim would reply he would “look into it”, “call me back”, etc.. This went on for 2 months. The disgrace my wife felt from being ignored was starting to make us wonder what was really going on.At the behest of my wife, I became involved in the situation. The response I received from Jim was perplexing. Jim blamed the current US Federal Government for giving people “free money” so they won’t “work” for a living, and the reason why our piano hadn’t been delivered was due to him being short staffed as everyone has been “staying home because they don’t want to work”. While he did say to me that this situation and delay shouldn’t have occurred, he made no apology.Upon receiving our next call, I questioned Jim on the fairness of our having to pay the 2nd half of the delivery fee in full due to the serious delay. Jim became belligerent stating that he couldn’t be held accountable for delays” or for “things he or his employees did or didn’t do”. Jim replied with more perplexing statements about blaming “Liberals”, “Government”, that “times are tough…you should be glad that we could have your piano shipped at this price”, etc. I told him that we could conclude our business, but after this point we wouldn’t be coming back as customers. His response to this was what you would expect.Jim’s son Troy delivered on the same day, albeit at 9pm at night. Attempting to have meaningful dialog with Troy was just as laughable was talking with Jim. The excuse from Troy was “…well, my dad is 85 years old…just cut him some slack…”, “he has obvious memory issues”, “I don’t see the problem…you have your piano now”, etc.Based on the reviews I have read here, I’m expecting some kind of statement from Jim in response to the effect of “…can’t please everybody…”, offer to call me to “apologize” only to not apologize and then meander on about irrelevant topics, go on an explosive tirade, and/or other ridiculous behavior mentioned on other reviews. If times are that “tough”, then you cannot afford to lose ANY customer, right? Wouldn’t it make sense to give people their product(s) as soon as possible to eliminate liability, free space/personnel for other projects, and actually get paid? Regardless of the reasons Jim, be it an inadequate record keeping system, memory problems, staffing issues, etc., you MUST either keep customers abreast of what is going on and/or be willing to work with them, when you fail to meet simple requirements WITHOUT berating them for questioning what is going on, asking for a partial/full refund, etc., as other reviewers here have.If keeping promises/timelines, maintaining a keen eye for customer service, and remembering the who, where, or why of what your customers are paying you for is too difficult, it may be time to close your doors. The very real disrespect you showed my family will echo well beyond us, and this review will help prospective customers stay clear. At the end of the day, we hired you for a job, where you assured it could be done within a specific time interval. We did everything you asked, promptly, and gave you significant leeway despite your meandering and very real difficulty with memory. You were rude and made no apology for holding our property 2 months past our agreed deadline. The collective disappointment we have as a family, immediate and extended, is immense. Yet, our family network considers this a blessing in disguise. If “times are tough” Jim, they are about to get harder. In one stroke you made us Heid Music customers for life! You reap what you sow.
Troy Laabs is the most honest and best seller I have ever delt with. The accordion came in perfect condition and very well packaged. I am very impressed by the quality of the service. I reccomend Jim Laabs Music.
I bought a Excalibur custom crown 5 switch accordion, unfortunately the model I wanted was not available but Troy laabs call me two days later telling me they had other color options. Even though I was a little disappointed that the model accordion was not available it is still the same model and plays well. I was a little skeptical at first after reading the reviews, and I do recommend calling first instead of doing what I did and bought straight from the website in order to check their inventory. Overall my experience was really smooth and sorry to all the people who had trouble with Jim laabs music in the past. Note everyone will have a different experience.
Friendly local business, with more options than I thought they would have. If there’s a specific item you’re looking for, they can order and deliver. Also, beautiful location, offering you city vibes, but with parking.😎
I was super happy with the Washburn mandolin I bought from these guys. They shipped it the same day that I ordered it and cut me a spectacular deal. Great company to deal with over the phone from out of state. P.S. the Washburn mandolin was of impeccable quality, sounds great and was set up with low nut action when I got it!! The setup turned into a two month nightmare when I upgraded to a radiused fingerboard mandolin and had to shop elsewhere. Thank you Jim Laabs music!
Came in today to purchase a bass guitar. The gentleman at the counter had showed me different options of basss that he had in stock. Family has done with Business with Jim Laabs Music for Years so i was Great full when i was being helped with my Decision. Excellent Service and Excellent Staff.
I went here with my grandpa in June of 2020, I held my first 5 strings, had the best hour of my life, made shure I wanted to play upright bass, and had like a 20 minute discussion with the manager, (I am not a Karen) but the nicest folks Ive talked to. I spent 2 hours in the car for amazing feelings, and I now play the 5 strings bass and dubble bass and cant forget the people who made it happen.
I paid $568 for a euphonium instrument on October 27, 2020 and was told the one I ordered was not in stock. I requested a refund but was encouraged by Troy to choose another instrument which I did. Now five weeks later I have not received the instrument that I had been told I would have by the 17 or 18th of November.I called Jim Laabs to request further information and spoke with Jacob who was not able to initially find my order. He then proceeded to tell me that someone would be contacting me to discuss my order.Clearly there was no information on my order but my funds have already been sent to them. I then proceeded to request a refund and Jacob stated that was not possible No we will not be able to provide you with a refund but we can exchange your item I requested to speak with the supervisor on staff and at that time he hung up on me.I called back and when I asked for the manager he stated that someone namely Troy would call me back by the end of day which would be 6pm today CST. I asked again to speak with the manager and why I would not be able to receive a refund, Jacob became nonchalant and dry and stated someone would be calling by end of day.I have not received a call back, a refund nor have I received the instrument that I agreed to purchase over the one I originally wanted.I highly recommend NEVER using this company for ANY music instrument as their SERVICE and I dont give a care attitude over almost $600 was unacceptable. To hang up on a customer that has given you their money and refuse to give a refund on an item I STILL dont have a tracking number for or the instrument is unbelievableNEVER USE THIS SERVICE EVER.......
I have ordered from them twice. Very good experience. I am in California and the things arrived on time and well packaged. The prices were very reasonable I thought. I will order from them in the future! Seems like a family owned business and I like to support that!
My experience at this establishment was both short and unpleasant. An employee basically chased me out of the store for playing too many guitars. I’ve never heard of an instrument shop that discouraged their customers from trying the merchandise.I will not be coming back.
I have been looking for months for a key of C pocket trumpet at a reasonable price, hard to find a key of C but they had one. Their customer service was great and shipping was real quick. I had my trumpet in three days from the date I placed my order. It sounds great! Thanks Jim Laabs Music for a great instrument.
Greetings Jim,Peggy and I would like you to know how pleased we are with our new piano bench. We have been using chairs with our vintage upright for many years and never took the trouble to search for a matching duet bench. You made the search easy and our new bench matches perfectly. We couldnt be happier. Everyone on your team was very helpful, the delivery was flawless and on time and the bench was packaged perfectly to avoid any damage issues Thanks again, we will recommend you folks whenever we get the chance. Happy New Year, Chris and Peggy
Superb music dealer! They offer an outstanding lineup of Schiller wind instruments...with excellent technical design and quality...and all at affordable prices.Their customer service is also top notch. I recently purchased a Bb Trumpet and a Bb Baritone Horn from them. However, when the Baritone I ordered via their web site was out of stock (and would apparently be that way for an extended period of time) I received a friendly phone call from them to that effect, and a substitute horn of greater value (at the same price and superbly packed) was then quickly shipped to me here in Canada!I simply couldnt ask for better cross-border quality and service from a music dealer....at any price. Many thanks, folks. We WILL be doing business again!
I purchased a Trixon Pro Marching Snare from the Jim Laabs Music Superstore. It took a while, but I received it a few days ago. This little drum sounds great. Ill be using it for reunion weekend at the University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band, perhaps not this year, but soon.Googling this drum tells that it is made in east asia meaning China. It is very well made.
Bought a Japanese Yamaha C5 1988. After receiving the piano had it evaluated by a local Registered Piano Technician who took it apart and inspected it thoroughly. The piano was found to be in an excellent condition and he indicated that all the parts used in the refurbishing process were Yamaha original parts. BE AWARE! Reception of the piano took a couple of months as it is shipped in a ocean going container. If you can be patient, it is worth the wait! The delivery and set up to my home was great too.
Great experience! Super helpful and knowledgeable staff. Also very nice over nice phone and professional as well. I got a Schiller Bass Flute and it plays beautifully!
Just purchased a Yamaha U3 piano from them in mid April. Just arrived May 6, 2019. It was a wonderful experience. Jim helped me through my purchase decision. The piano was detailed and in great condition when it arrived. Im an aerospace engineer so I can be pretty detail orientated/quality minded individual. This piano was perfectly in tune and in awesome condition. Delivery guys were very respectable and did a great job. My family is thrilled. I dont expect to have to purchase another piano now but if I did I would not hesitate to work with Jim Laabs Music again.
I received my Schiller Marching Field Baritone today! It was packaged very well and the instrument looks and sounds fantastic. From ordering online to receiving the Baritone was only 4 days. I felt the price was reasonable and would certainly purchase another instrument from your store again. Thanks, from Phil in Danville, Indiana!
As a pianist it is important to get a grip of my instrument and get an understanding of it before investing money into it. I was told that I was not allowed to touch the piano because it was too expensive. Ridiculous, seriously?
I was trying to order a tuba off of their site and Reverb.com. My first problem with the whole deal is that both sites say that I am able to make a deal for the products I was looking at, which I was told on the phone that the prices were firm and non-negotiable. I was OK with that because the tubas werent very expensive in the first place. I held a tuba under my name and placed a $100 down payment for HOLDING the tuba. I continued to do my research for the next week.I eventually found a better deal on their site and wanted to switch over my down payment to the new one, but the salesperson insisted I bought the more expensive one because it looked nicer. After he said that, I told him I would call back and didnt transfer the down payment to the new one. I did that because that was the real strike one as he was just trying to sell me a product.I eventually found an even better product at a store near me that offered student discounts since I was going into college. Not only that, the customer service was much nicer and they asked me good questions like what specific brand is your college looking for? or what type of brands are you comfortable with? to better help me in a proper search. I ended up deciding to take the deal with the nicer company because they offered a better discount, had the option for me to actually inspect the tuba myself, and were much friendlier.I called Jim Laabs back to cancel my payment all together and the representative continued to try to shove different products down my throat as I continued to decline. The employee called me stubborn, told me I was wasting his time for putting down a down payment and not paying the rest, and hung up the phone before I got confirmation on the return. It was terrible customer service that only cared about getting money rather than offering help because of a love for music. I will make sure I never even consider products from Jim Laabs again. The representatives name was Josh.Trying to contact a 17 year old begging to take down his review as it was offensive then yelling at him and his parents until promises were made about taking down the review before returning OUR money? Really?
I called Jim Laabs because I was looking for a quality used grand piano. The item I wanted was already sold, so he suggested a Schiller piano, as he was the distributor for them. I asked about where they were constructed, and he said the parts are from Germany. I asked again if it was China or Korea or something, and he said it was a factory that all the other brands use. So no clear answer. I did my research and while Schiller may have made some quality instruments, the name is now just a stencil brand, and Jim Laabs or someone at the store owns the name and sources out the piano from china or somewhere else where labor is cheap. He can offer this wonderful piano for ~$5,000 rather than $15,000 MSRP not only because its factory direct, but because he set that arbitrary MSRP, and no other reputable piano company would care enough to sell these pianos. Seriously, search.Only Jim Laabs sells them.Do not buy a Schiller piano.Do not trust Jim Laabs. He is pushy and just wants to make a sale on sub par instruments. When I called Jim and told him about my reservations, he got belligerent and even had the gall to say the Schiller brand has been around for a long time. While that is true, it is deceptive, since quality Schiller construction has long since passed and is now a stencil brand that he purchased the rights to. He also had the gall to say that Steinway, as well as Mason & Hamlin, had been sold and traded multiple times. While true, they at least do have a quality standard.Edit: Im updating my review since Jim Laabs called me after I posted this review and said he would like to apologize. However, he was quick to get very defensive and angry towards me, and kept interrupting me when I was telling him about my continued reservations about his Schiller piano brand, so it is difficult to take it as a sincere apology. It seems this happens frequently with him, there was another review where he called the customer to apologize. Maybe he needs anger management. The whole time, I was calm and collected, and to be honest, I just found it amusing that on his apology call he kept getting mad and confrontational at me. Jim mentioned that many venues and universities had bought Schiller pianos and had no complaints, however, he was unable to name one because he feared what would happen if I contacted them, which is truly the sign of a man who stands behind the quality of his instruments. Either that or he just made it up on the spot, and is used to people eating it up when he uses nuanced sales tactics such as Everyone loves them, everyones buying them, universities, venues, everyone!. I do not recommend doing business with Jim Laabs.I understand that many instruments nowadays are made in countries other than the US. I own some myself. Some of them can be very fine instruments, and are made more affordable by foreign manufacturing. However, you have to use caution and common sense. Talk to a local piano technician or third party piano expert. You are usually better off buying a used instrument of better quality at the same price. If you are in the market and are just getting started in the piano world, or looking to buy for your children to learn on, avoid the headache. Talk to a local piano technician. You can get started with a quality (likely used) instrument below $10,000 or even $5,000.Just dont trust Jim Laabs.
Wonderful experience. I purchased an Excalibur super classic 120 accordion and exceeds my expectations. Well made, and sounds beautiful. They told me upfront when I called that it would take 50-60 days since they were out of stock, but gave me a fair price for the accordion, hard case and microphone pickup system. About 60 days they gave me a call and said they got them in stock and was sending. 3 days later, arrived in perfect shape probably due to their expertise in shipping accordions, well done Jim Laabs Music.
Was treated absolutely horribly by an employee. She was very rude. First and last time I will go to this store. Glad there is a Heids music and Amazon.
I had a great experience w/ Jim Laabs music this past weekend. I had worked with Alan over the phone a few times prior to my visit and talked out some of the details regarding the Jackson guitar I was looking for. I got there and found exactly what I was looking for, at the price we agreed upon and it was in perfect condition. Transaction went smoothly and I was out the door with a very nice guitar and at a deal better than I could have gotten from the Big Box music store. Good deal for me.
We purchased a grand piano from Jim. I can only say that the quality is unparalleled for the price. I am not giving 5 stars because of the poor customer service we received from (I believe his name was Troy). However, I am very pleased with Jim, the delivery crew (they were great) as well as the actual product.
Not great. Website showed item priced as $150, which is why we went to the store. Item was priced at $199. We spoke with the sale staff and showed the website on our cell phone. The sale staff went to speak with management taking our phone with as proof. When he came back he said that they could give it to us for $182 and that they are short staffed so the website wasnt updated. Needless to say we left. Disappointing.
So earlier, my customer service experience was not very pleasant, but that was all turned around after speaking to a nice man at the Arden Hills location and then another nice man named Aaron at the Stevens Point location. What a world of difference from the last time I called. So glad I did! Aaron changed my impression of this company almost immediately, by listening and offering an apology for someone else. He was patient, listened to my questions and was very helpful!Just want to say thanks again to Aaron!!! WONDERFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE this time around!!!!
We ordered a Schiller marching tuba over the phone sight unseen from Jim Laabs based on a handful of online reviews that said it was OK and it was delivered a day earlier than it was scheduled for, it was very securely packaged and the tuba itself was actually nicer than we expected. The tuba was much cheaper than similar ones so we were skeptical but its actually pretty nice. very shiny, nicely balanced to hold and plays just fine. The only reason for 4 vs 5 stars is that their return policy (in case my son just didnt like the tuba - sight unseen remember) was only for store credit. Other than that this whole transaction was great.
I am so happy with my purchase from Jim Laabs. Troy answered my many questions via e-mail quickly and professionally, he is very kind, and I never felt pressured to make a purchase. My cello is of a very good quality for a fair price. Although I had to wait a bit to receive it, they were out of stock, it arrived very well packed, no damages to my instrument. I can honestly recommend Jim Laabs service as well as their instruments and look forward to doing business with them again in the near future.
FIRST RATE COMPANY! This is the third instrument I have purchased from Jim Laabs, and everything was exactly as promised. I am a return customer because they give excellent customer service, and have always treated me squarely. I bought a Schiller C-48 vertical piano, and it is outstanding. I am a professional musician with over fifty years experience, and I have quite a few options to purchase a personal instrument. Jim Laabs is my first choice, and Ill be happy to be a reference for Jim anytime. Its nice to know that despite being a mega-company, you still get personal attention from Jim Laabs. This is the type of company that has traditional values, and honors the customer. THANKS!! Michael Monaco
Very large selection of musical instruments and equipment available in store to view. Large piano showroom. Large area for guitars. Large selection of speakers and other audio equipment. Knowledgeable staff who spend the time getting to understand what you need. There are also teachers and rooms in store for music lessons.
It is a review from Japan.I used this shop for the first time.Mail reply is also quick, explanation is correct.Everyone at the shop is kind. The shipping of instruments was also very fast, the packaging was polite and the instruments were in excellent condition. It is a very reliable shop.I was satisfied with the deal this time.If I have a chance, I would like to purchase musical instruments from this late shop.Thank you very much!!!
Bought a Yamaha U3 piano at a bargain price. The piano arrived 2 weeks later and looks great!!! The sound is beautiful. Highly recommend this store.
Jim Laabs Music is my only go to place for anything music related and has been since I discovered them a few years ago. Whenever I have an interaction with Mr. Laabs or a member of his staff I am treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism. His stores are beautifully maintained and stocked with the best selection in the Midwest if not the nation. Jim and Troy set the standard for real, genuine, and benchmark leading customer service. Both Jim and Troy have gone way out of their way to make sure I am always getting exactly what I want at the best price. Recently Jim made an upgrade path possible for me to a wonderful European built Schimmel grand. I can tell you that no other store would do or could do what Jim can. Whenever I come in I feel like I am with family and I am looking forward to making many more future purchases with Jim Laabs.
Give credit where credit is due. I had been out of the market for musical instruments and accessories for several years. When the need arose I visited the store 3 times before making my decision. Not once was I pressured in any way. They were helpful, friendly and the transaction could not have been better. Very happy with the store and the product I purchased. Ill be back.
I purchased our Schiller 5’5” CE Grand Piano in September 2013 from the Arden Hills store. The salesperson (Marty) was terrific. He made the purchase fun. That said, I promised him I would write a review of the Piano and experience with the store. I wanted to wait a few months to let the piano acclimate to our home and for an independent piano technician to service the piano. The piano arrived on the promised date in perfect condition. It quickly lost tune due to its new environment and needed tuning within three months. This is normal as the salesperson explained. The piano technician was as impressed as we are with its sound and feel. He also commented at the nice job Jim Laabs Pianos did installing the Dampp Chaser. Great product for price and great experience with Jim Laabs Pianos.
Bought a beautiful British Baritone horn from them. Great communication on my questions beforehand. The day after I ordered it I was about to email for shipping tracking and I got a notice that it had been delivered. Looks and sounds lovely, intonation is surprisingly good wit this 3 valve compensation system. The valves are much nicer than the euphonium I got from the other nice guy selling only silver Jin Bow (sp?). Vice nice horn and service.
Thanks for the great deal on the double bass pedals.great product & fast delivery
I highly recommend you dont buy from Jim Laabs music. Let me tell you a story; I bought a Seagull guitar from Jim Laabs music around 8 years ago when I was in college. Fast forward 7 years and I come to find out that the guitar they sold me had a lot of issues that Seagull didnt catch. I contact Seagull and they tell me to go back to Jim Laabs to have them look at it to see if there are any issues with it. Jim Laabs told me there was nothing wrong with it and wouldnt do anything else to help me out. I then reached out to October Guitars in Wausau (30 minutes from Jim Laabs) and they were able to help me get my guitar sent in under warranty. I now have a new guitar that came in under warranty from Seagull thanks to October Guitars.
BUYER BEWARE - GREY MARKET PIANOS: I bought a U3 piano from Jim Laabs and he intentionally HID the fact that the piano he sold to me is a GREY MARKET piano -- the U3A MODEL sold to him for very cheap because its made for the Asian market, not to be sold in North America. My bill of sale doesnt even mention the A part of the serial number, because he didnt want me to know that it was from the grey market. YAHAMA warns on their website that you should NOT buy GREY MARKET pianos from dealers. I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH JIM LAABS AND HE JUST NOW ADMITTED TO TWO THINGS: He knows hes buying and selling grey market pianos. And he is the largest retailers of grey market pianos in North America. He yelled at me, disrespected me, and hung up the phone. Unless you want to be mistreated and have important information withheld from you, DO NOT BUY A PIANO from this place. IM OUT OVER 3.5K and he refused to take the piano back and refund my money.
Worsttttt online & over the phone experience of my life. Ordered an accordion 3 weeks ago, I didn’t receive a call nor message to tell me they were out of stock in the color I had ordered!!! At this point I guess it was my fault as I had already read reviews on their accordion shipping methods but I still decided to wait. After 2 weeks I ended up calling and emailing the store and spoke to Troy, he then after 2 weeks of waiting for a follow up told me they didn’t have the accordion I wanted in stock. We ultimately came to an agreement as far as what accordion I was going to receive. Now 3 weeks into the order they call me and state they have not received payment yet, at this point I still went along with it and we both tried to figure out what the situation was on either of our ends. My bank cleared payment 3 days after the order was placed and of course they came at me with no payment had been received, next Day Troy calls me and requests my card number for payment over the phone that’s when I knew I smelled a fish... long story wrap up, HORRIBLE SERVICE, STOLE MY MONEY OR “CAN’T FIND IT”, rude people, shotty place... BUYERS BEWARE.. NEVER AGAIN!!!! ZERO STARS!!!
Just purchased a cello and the whole experience was flawless. Received shipping quotes immediately. Rang the store and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful. The cello arrived in New Zealand within a week in perfect condition and played straight out of the box. I couldnt ask for a better experience.
Very good customer service, awesome products. And they are prepaired too go above and beyond too make a customer happy. Will definitely do business with them again
From an electric guitar players standpoint, I have had nothing but top notch service from Laabs. They set up my old Schecter perfectly for me and helped fix a tube-amp problem I was having with the connection. They always took time to listen and their solutions were practical and effective. Laabs is my go-to music store.
I just put down deposit of $500 through credit card today for purchasing a kawai US 63 1988. Reasonable price. Actually I just get what I can afford and after doing lots of homework about this piano on youtube. My piano will be arrived in 3 weeks. Excited for it. Jim is very helpful, straightforward and give a very clear answer. I love the fact that I dont have to pay in full before I see and play my piano when it is in my home. I hope everything go well and I will receive what Jim promises me today.
I recently had a problem with Jim Laabs. I was quite upset by it and was certain that it would remain just my problem. However, I am happy to report that a store employee returned my call, took my issue seriously and went out of his way to fix it. So rather than leaving a scathing review full of anger I can say that Jim Laabs does care about their customers and does the best that they can to provide a quality product and service.
At the request of the owner, I am removing my review. My wife did ultimately receive an apology.
Worst company ever! I ordered an accordion back in October and to this point I have not received it. I keep calling them and they keep saying next week, at this point I believe they will not send me anything. They also do not want to refund the money. Please be careful when shopping online. I have learned my lesson
Super friendly guy in the guitar department, immensely helpful and knowledgeable
I was visiting for some birthday gifts and decided to look around here. I went upstairs for the ukulele and found a very nice selection and at great prices. Concert ukeles are around 150-200$ acoustic guitars are about 100-300$ . Coming back for Christmas.
The vast majority of people are happy with this business? I beg to differ. Please check out Topix. Let me know if you still think everyone loves them.False Advertising. The prices and items you may see on the website are not representative to the items actually available. I was interested in the Yamaha U3 piano listed on their website for $2480. Called on the phone and was immediately told it was $3600 instead. The website claims free financing is available through Dec 15, and makes several examples of pianos priced from just $1685 to $4750. I asked about this and was immediately denied and told that they pick and choose depending on how good of a deal you are getting. My credit score is 700. They refused to tell me any piano that I could get for free financing.Salesman was extremely rude and pressuring. This store is alike to a car dealership in just about every way. Emails go unanswered when you ask something they dont want to answer.I am only adding to the poor reviews with my testimony. Please read through the reviews before deciding to shop here. Here is what others are saying (from various review sites):“Easily the worst customer service experience of my entire life at ANY restaurant, store, etc. that Ive EVER been to.”“Jim got mad because I called him too many time asking whats going on and yelled at me.”“The worst of the worst! They are bait and switchers.Steer clear of them!”“Worst transaction of my life. Terrible product and terrible service. I hope they go out of business.”“He was rude and unhelpful throughout, with constant bait-and-switch behaviour. Very arrogant and manipulative”“This is my worst shopping experience ever since we have lived in this country for about 12 years.”“Jim labs superstore are crooks and frauds.”“Pathetic. They´ve been doing this for 54 years they say.”“Worst business ever”
The sellers think very little of customers. People who are experienced musicians will be belittled. How are they still in business?
Horrible customer service and overcharged products. If you find something you like you’ll find it $40 cheaper anywhere else
As a professional horn player for over 51 years I can honestly say that I feel sorry for the band and orchestra parents of todays school students. Prices have gone sky high and comparable quality has gone down the drain. Fifty years ago a student horn would easily get a kid through high school. Today youll be lucky if its still in one piece. When it comes to French Horns, what was $1100 in 1964 is $4800 today and not built as well. Now comes the Chinese French Horns. Most of them are junk; SUITABLE FOR MAKING LAMPS. One brand; Schiller American as distributed by Jim Laabs Music is built very well with good solid intonation, valve action, tone quality, and ruggedness. I have had two of these horns as back-up instruments so that I wouldnt have to take my expensive horn with me to rehearsals all the time. For the American Student I strongly suggest the SCHILLER ELITE VI 831L Kruspe style horn which has a tone like the Elkhart 8Ds or King Eroicas. Just switch to a good American Mouthpiece. For the best prices and service call directly to the studio, select 4 and ask for Troy. He will give you the best price. Like any horn keep it well greased, oiled and waxed.
Employees not knowing what they are doing. An example of them not knowing what they are doing is plugging in the bass guitar into the headphone jack on the amp and, they didn’t even know they did when I pointed it out. Also not very nice to work with because they are usually rude and a pain.
Wow - just got off the phone with Troy. My experience was that he was very rude. I asked about a Besson euphonium availability and pricing, and he tried to push their Chinese import Schiller brand on me, and copped an attitude when I told him I wasnt interested in a Chinese euphonium. If you are an inexperienced adult buying a horn for a child, watch out for letting them pick the horn you need. Jim Laab, you need to rethink your customer service. If youve handed over your store operations over to your family, its time to reel them in. I was ready to lay down some tax return dollars for $4k worth of horns, but now not with your store. Good luck.
I can’t believe something went beyond what I expected. I already purchased a bass from JIM LAABS years ago and it was a great sounding, beautiful for the price. Unfortunately I had to sell it. I had a opportunity to buy another bass. I chose JIM LAABS again from my prior experience. I was overly excited when the new bass arrived, I could not believe the sound, it was loud and well balanced and the looks and craftsmanship was beyond anything I expected! I am pleased and overly satisfied with this Bass and JIM LAABS, CUSTOMER SERVICE, and the DELIVERY TEAM. I will always be a returning customer, THANK YOU JIM LAABS!
Honestly disgusted at there staff here, we walk in and I asked if it was ok to play the bass that was sitting there and he said yes and than went ranting on about how if I break it I buy it assuming that I had now idea how to play. Not only was he was he being intrusive but he sat there and stared at me until I put it back. He was very disrespectful and made me and my friends very uncomfortable because he would not stop staring at us even tho we are experienced musicians but scince we are young he assumed that we would cause trouble. My friend was trying out drums because he just started to play them and was looking for a set for his house. He sat down to play a cheaper electronic set when the staff member came running in or direction and said you know that has a price tag on it right in a very sarcastic and rude way. Never coming back here again, cant believe there service. please dont come and support this company, they dont care about the younger generations. Would have gave it 0 stars if I could.
Made the trip from Green Bay to Jim Laabs expecting to find a large selection of Deering banjos. When I got there, there were only a few, all out of my price range. I wasnt happy. But.......Jonathan in the guitar/banjo department made me a deal on a higher priced model that put a smile back on my face. I left with a banjo that I thought I couldnt afford, glad that Id made the trip to Jim Laabs.
People have been saying the same thing about Jim Laabs for years - overpriced, and the service is awful. Plan on being talked down to when you go to Jim Laabs. If I ever need any musical instrument supplies, Im more likely to drive all the way to Oshkosh than to go here.
Well, after reading all the negative reviews about Jim Laabs Music Superstore I was reluctant to buy an accordion from them. Then, factor in what everyone is saying negatively about Chinese accordions, Id have to be really dumb to buy a Chinese accordion, especially from Jim Laabs Music Superstore.Only, Im glad I did. My God. I bought such a great accordion. They helped me through the buying process and steered me away from one accordion that I was considering to another accordion, a much better one, that I hadnt considered. I bought an Excalibur Super Classic V with tone chamber and boy and I glad I did. After owning some of the very best Italian accordions, Crucinailli, PanItalia, PanJet, and a Philharmonic with 15 treble switches and a dual tone chamber, this accordion was worth every penny.Musette tuned, I love the sound. With 11 treble switches and 7 bass switches, I can modify the sound of this accordion with a push of a button to compliment any song. This is truly a magnificent musical instrument of very high quality, especially when factoring in how little I paid compared to how very much I paid for an Italian accordion in the past.If you are like me, on the fence about Chinese accordions and thinking about buying a used 50-year-old or 60-year-old Italian accordion for more than what I paid for this accordion, do yourself a favor and listen to the Excalibur accordions online before making your decision. I guarantee you, whichever model Excalibur accordion you decide to buy, you wont be disappointed and youll save a fortune in the process. My accordion made the 1,500 mile trip unscathed in three days. Packed well in a great case, I am totally happy with my purchase. They even gave me an Excalibur tee shirt for free. My Excalibur Super Classic V with tone chamber sounds as good as the Black Diamond accordion with tone chamber but at a much lower price.Take my word for it, someone who has played Italian accordions for decades, the Chinese have come a very long way in making accordions. This is a quality instrument that deserves your consideration. Im so glad the I bought a brand new Excalibur for less than what Id pay for a 50 to 60-year-old Italian accordion without even a tone chamber which this one has.I not only highly recommend Excalibur accordions but also I highly recommend Jim Laabs Music Superstore, specifically Jeff and Troy.
Ive been shopping at Jim Laabs on and off for the last fifteen years, their customer service has always been wildly inconsistent. Ive had wonderful experiences where the staff has been extremely helpful, but Ive also had horrible experiences where the staff was unprofessional and rude. They have a wide range of musical instruments available, and offer lessons or a way to find lessons for all the instruments they sell. That being said, most of their instruments are overpriced.A common practice at music stores is to price the instruments 10-30% higher than the accepted value, and then the salesperson will tell you you are getting a discount. Most of their instruments are priced the 10-30% higher (e.g., a $999 guitar selling at Jim Laabs for $1,299), and often wont come with a discount (thats why youll see reviews complaining about overpriced products).I personally will only buy strings (violin, mandolin, and guitar) only if I absolutely have to. They will charged $24.99 for strings that I can buy on Amazon for $9.99. On a good day, I might get a 20-40% discount at Jim Laabs, which means my $10 strings still cost $15 at Jim Laabs. My advice to consumers is to go to Jim Laabs, survey and write down the products you are interested in and their price, try them out. Then go home and look up the products and their prices online to make sure you get the best deal on your instruments. Its nice to support your local business, but you also need to make sure youre not overpaying. After my negative critique of their prices, I do need to emphasize that they have one of the best Piano selections in the area. If you want to buy a high end piano that has the capacity to become a cherished family heirloom, go with Jim Laabs. To summarize: inconsistent costumer services-when theyre good, theyre great, when theyre bad, theyre horrible. Instruments and products are usually overpriced, be an informed consumer, compare their prices to other stores and online. Last of all, their pianos are absolutely wonderful.
HORRIFIC CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! I never do online reviews but this experience was SO bad that I couldnt NOT let other people know. I would NEVER go there again.
Found the concertina after doing a search, and they were helpful and easy to deal with. When my concertina arrived it was packed great, double boxed, and is nicer than expected.Very nice, with a great sound, and very responsive, even on the lowest bass notes. This was the Excaliber brand. It is well made, sounds great. I did do my own set up as far as the straps and the distance of the hand rest is, and some may not be able to do that part of it, but I have it to fit my hands perfectly now. Incidently, the Excaliber name and the other reed nameplate are just stickers and can easily be removed leaving a finely finished wood.Ive already set it up, and made it my own to fit my hand. The airbutton was too close to the buttons, and the palm bar was too closeto the buttons for my hands, but it was easy enough to set up for me.One thing that was very close to perfect are the reeds, I have noneed to touch any part of the reeds. Tuned at 440 pitch, and veryaccurate. Tested with a Korg tuner, not just my ear. Well made.
Jim, I didnt like your store. Ya screwed up, Jim. Jim ya sarcastically talked at me for playing the drums. Ya know I have really slight asperbergers, Jim. Jim, Im really disappointed, I thought you were a professional, Jim.
They are good people and know what theyre doing.
Friend had a bad experience.
Terrible customer service.
Great prices for high quality instruments
Excellent customer service; will return
I order acordion on line 7 months ago...and I still waiting...
They had no professionalism or interest in finding me a good instrument.
Awful staff, overpriced, and a joke to any real musician. Drive somewhere else or order what you need online.
Terrible Customer Service.
😉 Ok. Jim Laabs
