Brought a knife in that had been my grandmothers, mothers and is now mine. I thought it was destroyed and couldnt be repaired but they came through and made it more beautiful than it already was to me. I thought it had a wooden handle and it turned out to be horn. The turn around time was super fast and the price was definitely fair. Ill be taking everything I need sharpened and fixed for knives and scissors from now on.

Great same day service when I arrived at 10am. Weve known we needed to sharpen our kitchen knives for months. Finally put it on the calendar and best alarm Ive set in a long time.Straight up people there. Good quotes, reasonable pricing, great care in their process. My partner says she doesnt go anywhere else for this knife service. This was my first time, and she was, of course, right.

I entered the store and it was empty. Someone quickly came out and helped me. I informed him that I was here to get a knife sharpened. It had a few nicks in it and he asked if I knew that would cost extra. I had no problems with his pricing and believe it was a fair price for the condition of the blade and type of blade. Then he asked me where I got the knife, as if that really matters. I informed him it was forged by Forseti Steel and he seemed confused as he has never heard of them. Since this is a Damascus blade I informed him it was 1095 steel and a high carbon steel, I couldnt remember the second material. Damascus like this can be difficult to sharpen properly. He took my blade to the back and sharpened it for me.While I was there several other people came in and it became a tad busy. When he returned with my blade he showed me it cut a piece of paper, and I paid, trying to get out of the way. Even left a tip. Since this place is located in a very public area I didnt exactly want to examine my blade outside. After running a few errands and coming home I got a good look at my blade. This is where the fun begins. See, I know how to sharpen blades but I had a very large nick in it which is why I went to a professional.I should have realized from the get go this was going to not work correctly. They never asked what blade geometry I wanted. I didnt even think about it as with the type of blade it was its an obvious it should have either a Scandi or a Sabre grind, like what it came in with. What I got was.... neither of those. They sharpened it like it was a kitchen knife. So a flat grind. This is the type of blade that only the very edge gets sharpened. What they did was bring the entire edge to a point instead of a bevel like its supposed to and like how it came in. You can see from the pictures below how shiny it now is You can also see how uneven the shine is. This blade is not sharpened evenly. In fact, I couldnt get a picture of it due to lighting, but the edge is also uneven and is closer to a razor grind where one side is a sharper angle. Not only that but any point on the blade was rounded. I now have a rounded tanto, which is supposed to be square. The blade in the belly is supposed to have a sharp edge to it, they ground it to where it transitions with a rounded point. So not only is the blade sharpened with the incorrect edge its also re-profiled to be rounded off. They also ruined the acid finish by the edge. I went from having a very nice looking blade to one that is in need of resharpened, reshaping, and refinishing.Attached is a picture from Forseti what the blade originally looked like and you can see the sharp edges and profile it used to have.I will not be coming back, I dont give second chances. I cannot recommend this shop to anyone that is looking to get anything other than kitchen knives sharpened. The two stars instead of one is simply due to how quickly they sharpened it and me being kind.EDIT TO RESPOND:Functional edge? This edge wont last very long at all. Its completely uneven. Both sides are different angles. Not only that but you rounded squared portions and re-profiled to a profile that will not hold its edge. Its so uneven that the transition from the top blade to the belly is two completely different cuts on each side. If you look at it straight it looks like a child sharpened this. You took a blade that was still sharp but had some notches and turned it into a blade that will dull the first time its used to do anything other than cutting vegetables! I use this knife in the wilderness. The type of edge you put on will roll the instant it hits a single vine or root. The Scandi grind it had before was more than sharp enough to cut through small roots. The only reason it had nicks in the first place is from hitting metal and rock. This blade has survived 3 years and still held its edge with a few nicks. Now I am afraid it will roll just by looking at it!Future potential customers, see their response and how they ignore most of what is said here. Avoid!

I took several knives to be sharpened, both European and Asian. Two of them were in pretty rough shape. Im pleased to say that the folks at Vulcan were able to get them sharper than they were at purchase. In addition they had some beautiful knives for sale. The staff was helpful and answered all the questions I had. Five star experience all the way. I will definitely give them more buisness.

Im not sure where that negative reviews are coming from as these people were nothing but kind and respectful to me. I am a hairstylist and I brought in three pairs of shears to be sharpened. When I called to see if they sharpened shears his wife was very pleasant on the phone. And when I came in to drop them off he was very accommodating and explained that they should be picked up no later than 4:30pm or the next day, which was fine. I spent pretty much what I expected to for the price of my shears and yes, they are very sharp and cut well now. I do intend to return to this business for any future sharpening needs.

Have you ever tried to find someone who is a true professional to bring your knives back to their original performance - or better? This is the place and these are the people! On the recommendation of several friends, I brought my treasured Wüsthof knife set, purchased 30 years ago in Germany, to Vulcan yesterday for a restorative sharpening. I love to cook, and I use each of these knives almost daily. Ive kept at them with the ChefsChoice sharpener, but they just werent holding their edge. As well, I had carelessly snapped the tip of the butcher knife off and I feared Id ruined the knife. I went back to pick them up today - one day service! - and I hardly recognized them. Hes re-shaped the butcher knife tip as new, and every single knife was not only razor sharp, but the blades had been completely restored - they looked brand new! I could not be happier. Its rare to find this kind of craftsman. They also sell a wide variety of knives of all kinds, from kitchen cutlery to personal knives to machetes to swords. Very cool place, right behind the Tacoma Dome.

Absolutely horrific service, the worst Ive ever experienced. If you read their reviews theres a plethora of people whom have had terrible experiences at this shop. I traded an expensive knife for one of their, custom axes. The owner was insanely disrespectful, patronising and rude through the entire deal. Unfortunately there arent many options for sellers of axes in the area and I was limited to Vulcan. As his wife was finishing the paperwork on our transaction he goes to the back and starts making jokes with his employees about how he had just ripped me off by trading me a $20 refurbished axe for my $150 knife. Two weeks later I mouth to my axe to my pack to go on a short hike. The poor finish they had used on the haft turned the entire right side if my $700 pack red, as well as the interior of my vehicle. When I, POLITELY informed them they scoffed it off and hung up on me. Do not ever give these people your business! Theyre absolutely horrific and its mind blowing that these guys are still in business.

Wow, what a pleasure to have found this store! Our kitchen knives have never been in great shape as weve tried to use an electric knife sharpener at home. It cost around $5 per knife.Im now having my dads collection of pocket knives refurbished. Cant wait to see the results.

I have had a hard time finding a good cutlery store that sells, and sharpens, the kind of folding EDC (everyday carry) knives I enjoy and collect. I was happy when I walked in, almost ecstatic. The gal (and I didn’t catch her name, please forgive me) who helped me was very friendly and polite. I had my favorite knife with me, Chris reeve large sebenza 21, and asked her how much to sharpen it. She said it could be ready for pick up 4 hours later. Now I was willing to leave it, but she offered, for a little extra, to have the man doing the sharpening, drop what he was doing and get it done immediately. Now considering the cost of shipping it to the manufacturer for a “free” sharpening, and waiting 4-6 weeks to get it back, this was more than reasonable. I enjoyed talking to her while I waited and staring at the nice, quality knives they sell, along with their custom designs. This was a great experience and I was so appreciative they were willing to do it whilst i waited. For anyone who loves folding knives and custom made axes and fixed blades, I highly recommend this place, and like I said, they were very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. Oh, and great prices!

In regard to the previous review, I was in the store during this incident. There is a sign at the entrance of the store that clearly states you must be 18 years or older to enter premises but children are allowed with supervision of their adult. When this individuals child grabbed a knife off the counter the owner of the store reacted for the safety of the child and the parent did nothing to correct this behavior. While this was happening, their other child was opening drawers and was totally out of control. This situation wouldnt have been escalated if appropriate behavior of the child and proper correction from the adult would have taken place.Vulcan Knife does the best sharpening of my knives and always treats me with courtesy. They do a phenomenal job on restoration projects, high end culinary knives and fixing and repairing anything with an edge on it. The business owners always take care of their customers and provide excellent service.

I entered the store to an unkept individual who was noisily eating food with his fingers. He lazily acknowledged me and brusquely asked me to leave my backpack at the door, which I did. I cheerily told him that I was surprised that he would assume that I came in to steal. He then rudely said “son, it’s so you won’t knock over anything! And I also carry a gun with me in the store!”In the span of 3 minutes, he assumed that I’m a potential thief, and clumsy enough to knock something over in his store. Makes veiled threats with a gun, then he demeans me by calling me “son”, which no sane store owner should call a potential customer- especially one who is clearly not related to him and over 35.I hope I never have the displeasure of dealing with that unprofessional ingrate again. I suggest to all that you don’t give him your business, or he may insult and threaten you as well.

Totally Awesome!!! Sharpest knives I have ever had. Great price per inch of blade and you get a discount for multiple knives on your next sharpening. Infact, its hard to keep track of your signed discount card because, if you know how to touch up your knives on occasion, you will not be back for a year with good use! Do not be mislead by other reviews by urbanites that should be shopping at Nordstroms for their value knives or by people that shouldnt be allowed to even carry an axe on a popular hiking trail. This is old school blacksmithing and it is terribly hard to find! I am exstatic that they have the fortitude and attrition to stick around a metropolis and offer an amazing hand-over service. Kudos to this down to earth service...Carry On, Carry On

I had brought in my hair cutting scissors to get them sharpened and they did a horrible job. They aren’t cutting precisely, and it feels like there is more resistance now then before I brought them in. The blades are just bending the hair verses making clean cuts. Aside from being expert bladesmiths/blacksmiths/machinists the person who helped me is a skilled artist producing incredibly beautiful craftsmanship blades along with custom tool heads. I cannot understate the awesomeness of this store. I also saw some cool leatherwork, medival armor gelmets/gauntlets. Stop by and check out this little gem tucked away in the armpit of tacoma.
