Way cheaper than home Depot and Lowes. Great customer service. Personalized service for your items. Just a great business.
Very helpful sales people at this location. I had made a special order that I no longer needed and asked to return it (not always something they can do). John was super helpful and fast. Would do business here again.
They have great customer service and good quality Lumber. Their policies are quite a bit behind the times, rather surprising considering their clientele. I just left $2500 order and went to a competitor. Looking forward for them to change their policies.I even offered to pay over the phone on the porch as a compromise. The competition is getting my business. Looking forward to the return of their quality service
2020: I spent over $10k with Gray Lumber until I started to notice that depending who you talked to, the price for a stick of lumber would vary 15%. I sent them a letter and brought the discrepancy in price code to their attention and instead of making things right, they deleted my account!2021: I called and asked them to quote 20 pieces of lumber and three sheets of plywood. $760 was their contractor price. An hour later, I talked to another guy and the price was $614 for the same order. 1/2 CDX was quoted at $96. A buddy called with his contractor account and was quoted $68 for 1/2 CDX.Parr Lumber quoted $560 and another yard quoted $416 for the same product on the same day! NUTS!I have offered them every opportunity to sharpen their pencil when price gouging is found. Instead of negotiating, they tell you that you’re not worth their time. NUTS!I will never do business with Gray again and I suggest you think twice before giving them business as well! I will not support a company whos ownership is egotistical enough to stick their company logo on the side of an $80,000 BMW and instruct their employees to rip off hardworking customers.YOU CAN DO BETTER!
The customer service and available quality inventory was worth every penny for our project. high fives to the yard forklift operators for primo problem solving skills!
Ill never use this place again. Im a licensed contractor who has tried almost every lumber yard in the area and this is by far the worst. Their salesman are always super rude and short tempered, especially on the phone, and honestly dont really know what theyre talking about. They wont even give you a quote over the phone. Their prices are extremely high for sub par lumber and sub par customer service. Go to Arrow, or in a pinch go to Mill Outlet, at least Mill Outlet has decent customer service.
This company is the WORST! My husband ordered lumber and trex decking 2 months ago for a job that he is starting now. Most wood was split in half, most trex had a scratches and gouges in them (mind you trex is a tough product that is scratch and gouge proof). My husband calls and speaks to Danny. Danny accused my husband of damaging the trex and wood. Says that my husband has to bring the trex back so they can determine if my husband did the damages or if it was a defect in the product. This company has the worst customer service. If we truly messed up the lumber and trex products we would be 100% honest and say we did it.
It is the best store to buy wood, the prices are the best, the attention is the best, I recommend it, it is a bit far but it is worth it, to put another store in Seattle
I was given the recommendation to go to Gray Lumber and we had never been before. They had the beams we needed and the fence wood. They shorted us 32 boards which is about 100$ worth. We noticed that after unloading them. We have our receipt. They unfortunately loaded the wood directly into our truck and there was a ton of it. This was in the evening so there was no way we would be able to count it until unloading. We trusted them to give us the correct amount we paid for. They won’t give us the wood now and want us to pay for more to finish the job. They also didn’t give us a call back and it’s been 4 days since our complaint. We have a job to finish and now can’t complete unless we tap back into our pocket books and shovel out more money because of their terrible customer service. Terrible service in general for not counting correctly in the first place and then not taking care of customers who are trying to set their mistake right. Danny was great at trying to help. I blame management completely. Will never be back there after this project and we could have been faithful long term customers.
Very accommodating. Great sales people and nice selection of products
Building a large deck, about 2k sqft. Needed some material for stringers that was left off of our original lumber pack. I hadn’t done business with Grey before so I thought we’d give it a shot because they were close. I called ahead to verify they had everything we needed. They said they had more than I needed. Sent my guy there to pick up. They gave him the wrong material after giving them a written list of what I needed. Note that material was more expensive than what I needed. I noticed, and called. The guy asked me not to judge them on it and laughed. He told me to come back and switch them out. This would have taken another hour of our time. So I was left paying more for material I didn’t need and then paid again to throw away excess. I hear good things about Grey. Unfortunately good was not my experience. My lumber yard takes care of me. Won’t be back.
Best customer service around. Local company
First time in here and the staff were so friendly and helpful. My husband and I went in to buy some carhart beanies.Definitly going back in soon to see what else they have
Good business, and Laurence takes care of me everytime!
A lumber yard that can’t make clean cuts on 6x6s because ‘we don’t have a big enough saw’.
Great place to do business
They were exceptional helping us gather extra materials for our contractor. Loaded truck and made sure everything was secure.
I cannot say enough good things about this place. A local lumber store with anything wood you would likely ever need, as well as carpentry tools, hardware, and supplies. I dont go here nearly often enough...but I, and you, should. I ❤ Wood!
This place has the best quality lumber in town. Good selection and good customer service. Normally in and out pretty quick
Very friendly and professional service, for all that anyone would need for wood projects.
They are so helpful. It is my preferred place to go for building and repair. They may not have a big inventory but they really know what they are doing.
I get supplies there it,s great.
Derek is awesome and helpful!
They were busy but had all the cedar product needed
Very helpful and fast. I called Gray Lumber for some pressure treated fence posts. When I got to the store, I spent less than 5 minutes at the counter, maybe 10 minutes to get loaded and Im out the door! All this a $6 cheaper than Home Depots price. Outstanding.
Terrible customer service and product. I told Mike M I didnt have an account and proceeded to buy pressure treated wood. They thought they could get rid of their B grade lumber to a regular guy. All but 1 board had wane or were badly splintered. I told the guy to get me new ones. I called Mike M back to ask about sheathing products. He couldnt answer my questions and seemed annoyed when I asked about specific products. He then said Look we carry the good brand and generic brand. They could have had a 20k sale and future repeat customer. Instead they blew the first impression.
Nothing compares. Very knowledgeable staff.
Terrible customer service EVERY TIME I interact with them.
Nice store and pleasant people. Downstairs was a bit busy.
This is one heck of a good lumber yard. Staff is exceptional, so is the product selection. Best in the NW! I only wish they are open longer. How selfish of me.
Great customer service, they genuinely care about their customers and always have a quick turn around time. Answers questions/concerns in a timely manner. Awesome place!
NEVER AGAIN! We ordered about $3000 in lumber from Gray and it was a terrible experience! Their communication was horrible and their lumber was worse! It must have taken them a long time to find every junk piece of lumber they had to fill our order. Almost every piece they sent was split, had bark on the edges, big chunks missing, or had the lack of wood on the corners all along the length of a piece of lumber. They also sent us the wrong siding and then charged us a 15% restocking fee to return it!We figured we should buy our lumber from a lumber yard to get high quality wood…Huh! What a joke! We will pick our own lumber from now on at a “big box” store.
Always have exactly what I need & at a fair price.
Excellent, friendly and knowledgeable service. Helped me find a light block. Home Depot and Lowe didnt have it, Platt thought the item didnt exist. Greg not only knew what I was talking about, but had a variety to choose from. I highly recommend Gray Lumber for all your lumber, rennovation, electrical, plumbing and needs! And if buying local is important to you this is the place to go.
Best place in town. Can get busy but you will still more time at home depot. Plus Rich is the best salesman
Service was quick, friendly and they got our order spot on! Mosley, who delivered our lumber, was especially friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely woukd recommend them to a friend!
This place carries everything you need for projects. It’s a one stop shop. Been shopping here for 28 years and I still refuse to go anywhere else.
Great place, good people.
Excellent service and selection of quality products. You will pay more than at your big box stores, but you are getting infinitely better material.
Need some solid wood doors with a quick turn around, Grays could not get from their suppliers, but went above and beyond to help us find someone who could deliver. No sale that time but they have all that is needed in future purchases.
Great place. Wide selection of any thibg you need for wood building products. Also with Contractors INSIDE the building to meet and talk to customers of their needs for home upgrades and other similar needs.
Had $4700 of large beams and trex decking delivered. Truck came and drop the supplies in the alley. My husband who is a older and has back issues and a friend had to lift and haul everything into the garage. They did not arrive with a small fork lift (like I have had other builder suppliers do). The excuse was the truck they used did not accommodate a lift. The delivery person also said I should of hired someone to put it in the garage...really!At the price I paid I was not anticipating that we would need to move it. Never was I warned that it was our responsibility. The delivery person did not offer to help. These materials were heavy. Buyer beware if you are not equipped to move heavy builder supplies when delivered maybe shop somewhere else where the customer service and safety matters
The man behind the counter was totally uninterested in helping us. Actually arrogant ass describes him. The two young gentlemen out in the lumber yard however, were great! Very helpful and friendly!
Gray Lumber on 6th Avenue is one of the great old Tacoma companies that offers almost everything that a home owner needs to improve, remodel, repair or restore their home. I sell and rent a lot of homes in Tacoma and I always recommend the knowledgeable professionals who work at Gray Lumber because they are incredibly helpful and can make the home owners life so much easier. Great service, great company. Shop local and get help from highly experienced professionals!
Waited on hold for 5 mins to get attitude from a salesman. I asked a simple question. instead of a simple yes or no he seemed irritated and rather waste my time. ill buy my lumber else where.
Mike at gray lumber is always a big help
A true lumber yard offering professional grade products higher grade lumber than you find at box stores I often find #1 and better studs vs the utilitiy grade passed off by other stores
My wife and I went in to purchase 16 foot cedar deck boards after having a horrible experience with Home Depot. We expressed our concerns with a sales associate there and told him our story and the importance of this wood for our deck. He immediately bad mouthed home depot and said their wood was far superior than theirs. We ordered the wood and had it delivered after he assured us that they only pull the best wood. When it got here it was bad. There was staples in the wood, stains, burred edges, and a few cracked boards. I called the sales associate that I worked with and told him about the situation (heated of course because of his broken promises of delivering solid wood). I sent him pictures and he responded back in all caps, NO THANKS WE WILL PICK THEM UP AND REFUND YOU. Who does this? What kind of customer service is this. I would have loved to continue to do business with them and refer them business but with their quality of wood they delivered and the customer service after problems arise, I will not.
They are friendly, helpful and great to work with. I always prefer to deal with a local owner instead of a corporation store.
Awesome customer service..
I love the expertise and customer service here. So very helpful
Absolutely best lumber yard in pierce county, you go up to counter and your instantly greeted by first name and there always so helpful with finding things in their store.
Very friendly, helpful and accommodating.
Quick, polite and acurate!
Good customer service good yard guys for general contractors and homeowners
Good customer service had a order delivered and it was right on time with a phone call letting me know they were there to drop it off very happy
Its not cheap but you get what you pay for. Good quality lumber, people who know what theyre talking about and a local business that is a part of the community.
Had what i was looking for that home depot didnt carry
Never again!I had a special order. 12 pieces... after a lengthy and impersonal run around to order something specific... 9 of them showed up. Returned AGAIN.. still not there, and again... nope... nada... carpenter ready... opps... redesign and now I get to figure out what to do with 3 pieces of wood that I special ordered and since they didnt arrive when they should have I dont get to return... cough! One unhappy customer here.
Amazingly friendly and knowledgable staff. I look here first for all my project needs. Couldnt be any more impressed with Grey Lumber. Im thrilled that we have a local hardware/lumber store that I can support whole heartedly!
I purchased about 6k in custom cabinets from Gray. It wasnt a large or difficult order, but it took four different deliveries to get the order materials because they kept forgetting items and we had to REORDER doors and drawer fronts because they were painted so badly the first time around. The original order didnt have the cabinet sides, had the wrong configuration of one cabinet, and had no hardware included. They said a credit would be given because of all the rework and extra time required by my contractor, but refused to provide an updated invoice. Then, while I was trying to pay them, they wouldnt take a credit card over the phone. When I said that they were difficult to work with and a lot had been messed up, Melinda got very rude and said she had done nothing wrong, even though she had managed the whole order. I tried to explain that i wasnt attacking her personally, that Im a customer trying to record a complaint and she just kept cutting me off. I eventually hung up because I couldnt get a word in. Worst customer experience ever. Badly made products. Wish I had gone elsewhere.
Friendly, prompt, and informed service. Quality of products reliably excellent.
I love Grays! They are very helpful and have great deals on Tagro.
Fantastic customer service, very knowledgeable staff, and the place is a hardware wonderland. Always a great experience.
They are very knowledgeable and have most everything you need to build.
This is a small staff, knowledgeable hardware store with high quality lumber.
Great prices great service
Great place for all your building materials needs.
Always good service and they have what i need.
Great place to buy hardware and wood. Staff is always friendly and helpful.
Awesome experience. Fantastic products and unparalleled service.
Helpful staff and they put large product in your vehicle. They have flags inside.
Great service. Superior lumber
Abysmal experience. Worse than dealing with Comcast. DO NOT give them your private info, they have no good reason for demanding it other than selling it later and monitoring all your transactions.Gray Lumber insists on collecting your private, personal information for every single transaction, no matter what. No opting out or saying a simple No thank you. I tried. A pudgy, frustrated sales troll only yelled louder at me. Literally. No embellishment. No hyperbole. It was such terrible customer service it was almost confusing, if that makes sense.Gray Lumber aggressively demands your private information for simple, mundane purchases. The angry salesman literally yelled at me for not giving my private information when all I wanted was one sheet of plywood. Which I had cash (or check or debit card or credit card) to pay for. I was dressed decently, I am clean shaven, I showered that morning, etc. so I dont think I gave off any bad impressions. If you value your privacy and care about what happens with your personal data, STAY. AWAY.I do my absolute best to shop local and needed a single sheet of plywood. After picking up my kid, I headed to the nearest lumber yard which unfortunately was these clowns. From now on I will be avoiding them like the plague for my own good. If you are reading this, I encourage you to do the right thing for yourself and for Tacoma and take your business elsewhere. When I asked why they needed my personal information just to purchase one single sheet of plywood, his attitude went from aggressive to irate. His verbatim reply was BECAUSE. IT. IS. ON. MY. COMPUTER. SCREEN!! WHAT. IS. YOUR. NAME?!!! I have literally never been dressed down or yelled at in a retail store, ever. It was surreal. His behavior was bad enough but it was also in front of my one-year-old kid I had with me. I have also never heard such a ridiculous reason for demanding personal information.I have been in the trades for fifteen years and never seen such a display of pathetic aggression anywhere on the job. I known and worked with some real jerks and poor communicators. This experience took the cake. I had been in the store for maybe 2 or 3 minutes tops, asked (nicely) to purchase one seemingly simple item. And I left speechless. This business seems to be trading on past glory days. Every customer I saw in the store itself was well over 65. The worst thing about the whole situation is; in my experience older people often do not realize how much they are being taken advantage of when their private information is harvested. The predatory, aggressive demeanor I encountered would be nearly impossible for many (if not all) older folks to stand up to. I cannot really stress this enough. Steer your parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles and neighbors to somewhere that wont use their age against them.I understand almost every other hardware store/lumber yard has methods for collecting consumer data with things like customer loyalty cards. The ENORMOUS difference is a customer has to agree to have one, fill out an application and even then they can easily choose to not use it by simply not using it. Gray Lumber does not provide any such opt-outs. They want your information, accurate information (I tried a fake name to appease the angry sales troll but he was having none of that.)My experience was terrible. Save yourself the headache and protect your loved ones. Skip the time, hassle and privacy invasion these clowns demand and shop somewhere else. There are plenty of other places to buy lumber and over-priced tools in Tacoma. Dont enable these aggressive jerks. If you do go there, dont take children.I would give 0 stars if I could, but Google requires you giving at least one to write a review.Tacoma deserves better than this. Vote for personal freedom and your right to privacy and take your dollars elsewhere.
The best hardware store in the state
Friendly, professional staff. They sell good wood, and they know whats up.
Go to home depot. Had spent thousands in a remodel of my store here and had 2 brackets that were left over from the store. I dont get around 6th ave often but was in the area and decided to return the items. They would not take them back because apparently they converted thier system to something else. Go to home depot where they will work with you on a 2 item return!
Helpful, friendly staff. Competitive prices.
Great stuff and super staff. Lots of hard to find items.
Great Service, timely response and better selection then HD. In lieu of complaining of fees and turning it into a long complaint as some have here, I would prefer to pay more on certain items since its easier to talk to someone in the construction field then someone with only kitchen appliance background.
We had great customer service!
Awesome expertise and helpfulness.
Nice family owned business.
