Started with this company for first fill up and then they started raising their prices. I told them to come and get their tanks. I get a bill for 275.00 and 22.00 for tax total 297.00 for handling charge. Really John ray, we were paying you the whole time to rent your tanks and now you want more money. You are a rip off . BEWARE, do not sign up with this company.

Tip of the cap to Mary and Michael for top notch customer service! Mary reached out to me the day after our central air was installed to make sure I was satisfied. When I told her about the issues I had, she immediately informed Michael who contacted the installer and then called me directly to let me know that the issues would be resolved by the end of the day, which they were. Our a/c is as awesome as the follow-up and response I got from Mary and Michael!

We have been satisfactorily serviced by John Ray & Sons. There was one time a couple of years ago that we came close to running out of propane during a very cold late fall. We found out that they were delivering fuel based on last year’s usage. With weather changes each year, that did not work out well. No two years are the same. But since then we have had more frequent deliveries and they come automatically. Very happy.

I wouldnt even give this company one star. Customer service is horrible. Relentlessly harassed and called because in there system they cant see any notes that are made until after their system places a call. They were un willing to work with me on a payment plan unless it was an immediate half down after telling them multiple times I did not need a delivery and the continued to come out. Will never recommend this company to anyone unless your willing to deal with all there bullcrap. Worst company this far Ive had to deal with.

I had an appointment scheduled for August 5, 2021 for a conversion from natural gas to propane on a newly purchased Propane Stove. I was scheduled for 10 am service call to do the conversion. The technician arrived early and I was not at home at that time. I arrived home shortly after their arrival and explanined to them that I had been given a 10 am time frame. The technicians name was Steve Hanby who was accompanied by an apprentice, Trevor LeVan. The appointment was scheduled for a service call not a new conversion. After discussing with him the required time needed and the day of the calls he had scheduled we decided to contact the office to reschedule for another day/time. The new appointment was scheduled for the following week. After Steves call with the office was concluded he came back in to look over the instructions provided by the Propane companies manufacturer and began to look at our stove. The conversion instructions did not match the stoves parts. The instructions called to remove 3 3/8 nuts from the burner pan which did not exist. My husband tried to do this conversion before contacting Johnny Rays office and had the same findings. Steve and Trevor continued to try to find where these existed but could not do so. Steve then contacted the Stove Manufacturers customer service. They sent instructions that were still not updated but found a work around and was able to complete the conversion. This was no easy task for either Steve or his helping hand, Trevor. Steve never gave up at any point. He was training Trevor throughout the conversion and continued to keep his patience which I know was not easy. I would highly recommend to family and friends the service provided by this technician. He is an asset to John Ray and Sons and should be recognized for his exceptional skills and his professional service to their customers. I did call his Service Manager, Mike LaPort to share my comments with him and also told him I would write my review. I would rate this customer experience as 10 out of 10. Thank you!J

Up until today I have been very please with John Ray and sons service. I made arrangements to have a 1000 gal propane tank installed for my 22kw generator and hookup my fifth wheel camper. They sent 2 individuals out to my property on separate occasions to inspect and determine materials for the project. The 3rd person out was the service tech who set the tank and hooked up propane line to fifth wheel and installed copper pipe in another trench for the future generator install. Service tech was very professional and customer service minded. Service tech stated just give us a call when generator people come to install generator. We will come out and connect propane line to generator the same day. Just make sure you call with advance notice so we can schedule it. Thats where everything went down hill. I called 4 different times over 2 weeks to schedule service tech the same day as generator people. I was told the service dept would be notified thru company email to schedule service tech. Then they would call me to schedule. Well after multiple phone calls and no return calls from service dept. I called on the day the generator people were coming. Spoke to several people including Michael Laporte. They were all clueless. Even after explaining my situation of being offgrid and no power. They gave me a service date for over a month away. Keep in mind this is maybe a 30 minute job! Just connecting propane line to generator. I had to keep calling to express my feelings of aggravation and their lack of management and service. This all could have been avoided by calling me back in a timely manner to schedule the install. Michael Laporte told me he would prioritize this. Which he did not! Service tech still isnt coming for over a week. My complaint is not with employees its managements failure to respond to schedule service. Their failure to fix their mistake! Their failure to follow John Ray and Sons company mission. I would like to see Management held accountable like they hold their employees accountable. My experience with John Ray & Sons employees has always been satisfying and professional. I thank all customer service reps and service techs. Heres an update! I would like to thank General Manager Eric Pope for his quick response and resolution to my issues. He is very professional and caring of John Rays and Sons image. And again to the customer service and service techs you all are top notch! Thank you!

Overall, we did not have a good experience with John Ray. We used them for both heating oil and propane and were given a good discounted price to start. The following year prices were much higher especially compared to other providers. If you are going to use them for propane and rent a tank ask about restocking fees. My contract said there would be a restock fee but not how much. We stopped using propane in our home and were hit with a $250 restock fee when they picked up the tank. How can that be the last interaction you want to have with a customer. We didnt even switch to another provider.

They are way to expensive every year they play the same game. They send me a budget with pricing and the minute I call they seem to be able to drop the price immediately 50 cent a gal. Just send me the lower price. I dont have time to do this and should not have to. Can you imagine some seniors who they send these budgets to and dont think to call and complain. that is just so wrong. I have been with this company since 2015 and since it has been sold it is by far the worst. They sent me a new budget contract this year and I did not sign it but they did deduct the payment from my checking account. I was furious. I am shopping for a new company and had told them that. NOW since I have decided to switch to a more reputable company they want to charge me 275.00 to pick up the propane tank. That was never said to me when I first signed up. There are plenty of propane companys out there pick someone else.

The girl I spoke to then apologized for that happening and was taking care of it. It is now over a week again and guess what no check yet. Very dissatisfied! Please help us!After 5 months, we finally have the Generac we ordered in August 2020. It was installed on January 21---but its non functional since the Install doesnt meet code on its placement outside the house, and thus a line from the propane tank to the unit could not be completed!I am at my wits end on the journey to get our Generac functional. This all started in August of 2020 when sales person came to our home to discuss the Generac Installation and cost. We also decided to have a new furnace and tankless hot water system installed also, since we needed to have a propane tank for the Generac, and our oil tank was very old. So, we decided to get a complete conversion to propane. We previously have been with John Ray for Oil.Anyway, we put down $8000 deposit for all of the installs---Furnace, Hotwater system and Generac. While we werent happy waiting until October to get the Furnace and Hotwater system installed until mid-October (something we were told in late August when Randy came out to look at the site) we were patient.I discussed placement to the Propane Tank and Generac back in August with Z. And where the Genrac would be placed. Also with Randy when he came out in September for a site check. Randy had suggested some crushed stone for placement of the Propane Tank, and maybe some landscape timbers to hold the stone in place.I went right to work on getting a nice site built for the propane Tank, and the Generac. I removed Rhododendron plants, so make way for the tank and Generac. I hired a person to install landscape timbers--at a cost of around $600-. I put in a load of crushed stone.Sometime shortly after I constructed the landscape timber/crushed stone pad, Z returned to make updated measurements for the furnace system. While he was here, I showed him the landscape timber/stone pad---I wanted to make sure everything was done to John Rays satisfaction, to have the tank/Generac installed.Z took updated photos of the siteSometime in late September, one of the nice ladies from JR called and said the Generac wouldnt be available until January. Ok--Ill wait for it.--I understood the manufacturing problems due to Covid.Once Randy came out, in October, to do the install of the Furnace and other inside systems (he did a fine job) I thought everything was ready to go---aside from waiting for the Generac. While Randy was about to complete his end of the project, JR came out to install the Propane Tank, and do the hook up for Randys system (Regulator, etc. and line from the tank to the house. It wasnt until then that I was told that the Generac couldnt be placed right in front of the tank. I think Randy (who by the way I liked) and the fellow from JR discussed it and told me the Generac had to be placed at a site down a ways from the tank.I told them Id remove all the Rhodedendrons down along the house in that area they recommended for the updated Generac site, place more crushed stone, and get the area ready for them by the the time the Generac would finally be delivered.Top make things easier for the electricians who would install the Generac, and knowing winter was coming, I purchased and salted the crushed stone where I was told the Generac had to be placed. I covered the area with tarps, to keep the snow off the site--I tried to be a good partner for the job.The electrician came out the day before the Install in January---finally, we would have out Generac after waiting since August 2020. he looked it over. They arrived right on time at 8:00 on January 21---and did a nice, neat job with the installation.Only today, when JR crew arrived did I find out a line from the propane tank to the Generac that was in-place, wired, and ready to go could not be completed because the Generac placement, and set-backs did not meet code.Im sure you can understand out frustration--again, we tried to be good partners with JR to get the jobs done. I went way, way way above the norm is readying the site for the jobs---and make it easy for the crews.

We have a fuel oil boiler system that failed on Thursday afternoon (11-20-20), and have a supply (propane and fuel oil) and service contract with John Ray & Sons - we realized it was late fall, an upcoming holiday weekend, and the likelihood of other customers with similar emergency issues to be pronounced. After the initial service request, we received a 7:19am Saturday morning call from Mr. Zbigniew Szymanski who committed to a site visit later that afternoon to discuss options on boiler size, pricing and access. Later that morning, and unanticipated, was a call from the John Ray & Sons General Manager (Mr. Eric Pope) who not only explained the process and the long history of John Ray, but committed to having a service team from the lower Hudson Valley to replace the boiler early Monday morning. On Monday morning (11.23.20) Bob (from Connecticut) and Jake (Mr. Popess son) arrived @ 8:00am after a three (3) hour drive - eight (8) hours later we had heat, the area was left exceptionally clean and the old boiler removed. More remarkable was the visit from Mr. Pope, who spent time from his conflicted and complicated day to visit and have a conversation with me and my wife.It is an understatement to compliment the team at John Ray & Sons for the quality of professionalism, the courtesies extended, the technical skills exhibited, the fairness in pricing, the ethos of the organization and character in this endeavor which was beyond exceptional --- especially in todays corporate environment, often steeped in arrogance driven and focused on profits and not the customer. On behalf of my wife and four dogs - thank you Mr. Pope, and the John Ray & Sons family, with best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday. Terrible business practices. I was told in June when I paid my bill that I had a zero balance. At this to be I told them Id be switching companies. I requested to close my account and I was told I didnt have the ability to do so because the account is in my fiance name. Since then we continued to receive a bill for 142$ and some change. While I was at work about a month ago (September 2021) my fiance called me and said.. do you know why John rays is here? I said no... so I called only to find out they were retrieving their tanks which mind you still had 60% in them and that there was nothing I could do stop them from taking their tanks. I work 15 minutes from home and before I got home. The tanks and my purchased regulator was gone. Leaving us with no heat and no hot water. And without a new company lined up. So I had to scramble and get another company in here so we could shower cook and have heat (if need be). Following this we were told we would receive a check for the amount of propane in the tank. That did not happen as they charged us 299 for picking up their tanks. During our two winter season with them. On automatic delivery. They allowed us to run our of fuel 5 times. Over charged us (based on contract price) delivered fuel to another house and charged us for it. And their customer service is terrible. I will be filing a complaint with the NY AG.

I was a regular fuel customer and had no issues, only cash on delivery, with my card on file. I decided to use them to clean my relatively new furnace. They installed a wrong part, and I was not aware (since Im not a furnace technician. This caused immense build up of soot, and every time they came to clean it afterward, they complained about the soot and blamed it on my using another oil companys dirty oil. Finally, my furnace quit in the middle of the day in January, my pipes froze and burst. I called the furnace installer to repair, they found the wrong part and corrected the issue. They cost me $1100 plus my plumbing repair. I did not blame or follow up with them, although I have the invoice that shows the wrong part being charged for. Later the following season, I signed up for their delivery plan and was told I was all set for automatic delivery. They immediately let me run out of fuel. When I called to find out how and why, they never delivered, they said I made a mistake by assuming I was approved and on the plan. I canceled any account with them. I decided to leave this review after reading similar reviews now that Im looking to find a reliable oil delivery service I can trust.

During a recent tank installation, the tech doing the install informed us toward the end of his day that he would be unable to complete install do a delay with the furnace install, and should hopefully be able to return tomorrow, which would be required to turn our heat on for the winter. At the time this review, its 55 degrees in my home. This has been a two month process of juggling three contractors. When I spoke to a representative of John Ray the following day I was informed that it could be WEEKS before a tech returns to simply perform a vacuum test and connecting a copper line to the tank. No indiction of when the tank might even be filled. Im now stuck with a $20,000 piece of worthless cast iron in my basement, my family hovered around space heaters during Thanksgiving, and no clear idea of when may be able to have heat. To say I am livid is an understatement. If it wasnt for the tank labeled John Ray sitting in my yard attached to a gas line they installed, I would be going with another provider.Update: overall, customer service seems a bit unbalanced. I now have heat, did receive valuable advice about the upgraded heating system that could lead to problems down the road at the hands of another installer. It seems as though now that I have crossed the threshold into a gas customer instead of someone dealing with install, things are a bit smoother. Online bill pay is very clunky.

John Rays driver John M. (tech# 1850) has been very helpful with one particular building that had a big 150kw generator running 24/7 and it was behind the building planted in mud and ice. Residential fuel oil and propane supply services have really gone downhill since John Ray was bought out by an out of state company. Weve been Ray customers at two locations for a total of 9 years, and current prices are ridiculous compared to some other local companies. We are on a budget plan, which is supposed to save us 10 cents a gallon over the market rate, however, the market rate they charge is 30-50% higher than some of the other suppliers in the area. We were just charged $3.89/gallon for a propane delivery, when two other suppliers we called would have done it for between $2 and $3/gallon. Unfortunately our budget plan contract locks us in to buying a certain number of gallons from them (which they overestimated by 15% given our historical usage) and if we wish to terminate our budget plan there is a $599 liquidated damages fee. And they are not required to refund any surplus in our account at the end of the budget plan, but instead will credit it to next years plan. So needless to say, well not be returning to John Ray once weve run our balance down.Mind you, we signed up for this plan, so no one to blame but ourselves, but the company has changed for the worse in the past year or so, and had we know then what we know now, we wouldnt have signed up.And finally, in spite of being on automatic delivery, we ran our of propane for cooking right in the middle of preparing for the Superbowl party. A good thing though, because the second tank for our furnace was at zero as well, and we would likely have lost heat if not for the emergency delivery at half time...In spite of all this, the folks we interact with at the company (delivery drivers, technicians, customer service folks) are very professional. We felt badly that we had to drag the nice delivery guy away from the Super Bowl, but he was apologetic for the inconvenience to us and was at our house within an hour of our call.

No real issues thus far. Delivery has always been timely. They made a mistake and gave me more oil than I asked for. Then, sent me a bill for me to pay the extra amount. I was not happy. Called to discuss and they had already changed it to a zero balance and honored their mistake. Pleasantly surprised.

Horrible. I had been a customer since 1991 so there was some trust there. Bad move on my part. I looked at the delivery ticket and saw that they were charging me $5.39 a gallon for propane. Propane on that day in the Capital District was $2.86 a gallon. So I called and told them I wouldnt pay almost twice the going rate and they acted surprised and promised to fix it. I wonder why they can fix it once they get caught. Unethical for sure.Second part - My mother ran out of oil on Friday morning. She noticed the house was cold around 11:00 AM. Placed a call. Called again in the afternoon. Then I started calling. The technician called back around 6 PM and left a voicemail. He called again at 8:30 PM. I told him to meet me at the house on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM. A tank truck showed up at 11:00 AM. 24 hrs later. They didnt call so I couldnt meet them to let them in to bleed the lines. So no they claim hes an hour out so that will make it 26-27 hours without heat or hot water.I think the problem is with management. The guys that come out to service the furnace have always done a good job and delivery used to be top notch.

Overpaid on a heating oil delivery, and took two months to be reimbursed. The excuses were plenty, including the classic the check was returned as undeliverable. Their drivers must be experts at finding addresses that the postal service cannot! Apparently, the radio ads are a complete ruse. This company was taken over by a larger one and is being driven into the ground, for profit, at customers expense. There are plenty of other reputable fuel suppliers to go with around Albany, so avoid the hassle and let John Ray die its corporate death.

Everyone I spoke with was very nice! HOWEVER, that does NOT make up for the fact that no two customer service reps had the same answer! Every time I called I got a different answer to the SAME problem, contracts were NOT explained throughly and I lost money, because I moved, one person told me Id have a reading done before our closing date and receive a refund, no one ever came and read our tank, another person said no, I could ask the new occupants of the home to pay us what the charge would be for what was left in our tank, I am SO disappointed and expected SO much more from such an established company!

We just got hooked up for propane with John Ray and Sons. The technician was very friendly and very efficient. A few hours after they left I still smelled propane. I live in Vermont and the office is in Troy, Ny. I called them back at 4pm and Jim, the tech, came right back to the house and remedied the problem. My pilot had gone out on my gas stove and Jim helped me get the pilot adjusted and relit. Very friendly, fast and efficient. Would recommend John Ray and Sons to anyone looking 4 profane or fuel oil

Had them install central a/c, replace my furnace, pipe my grill 4 years ago. I have had nothing but top notch service for the last 4 years and just recently had them service my systems and they found that my furnace fan had a problem and they are fixing it. Top notch service. Propane deliveries are impeccable as well. John Ray and Sons have done nothing but go out of their way to show me great service.

Also charging 3 times my current providers rate. When I stopped being their customer they were going to remove their propane tank a week before my new tank was installed leaving me without heat and hot water for a week. Very adamant that their tank had to be removed that day (until the NYS Attorney Generals Office got involved). That was the end of October, 2019. It is now January 7, 2020 and that tank they insisted they needed to remove in October is still on my property.

We are new customers and we were feeling really nervous reading the reviews below. Our oil tank was almost empty. We did not realize that we had to wait so long to get oil. But, after several phone calls and getting a confirmation date, they came Sat. 1/23/16 and refilled our tank as promised! I do hope in the future that we dont have to go through this panicking mode!

We hired John Ray to install ductless air conditioning in our house. Was told it would take a day and a half. Instead of supplying qualified John Ray installers, as promised, they subbed the job out to some plumber from Vermont. He spent 8 evenings in our house, working on his own, banging away till after 10pm. We are contractors - if we wanted to do it ourselves, we would have. But we decided to pay big bucks to a real company to do the job. Instead we got some dude who had to read manuals and google instructions. My husband ended up putting in several hours to help him finish the job. We received hollow apologies when we complained. No offer of a discount.

Over 5years on John Rays budget plan has given me a $2,000.00 surplus. Last night I came home to a cold house. 20 degrees outside, 50 and falling in my house. I called John Ray and was promised oil. I also received copious apologies. It is now 15 hours later, I still have no oil, thus no heat. I plan to post every hour on the hour until I get service. I plan to sue for theft of services.

I still currently have them but I dont think it is going to last much longer my wife has sent a contract back to them for the fourth time with the lock in price because they keep saying they dont have anything even though we have the conformation paper work from them saying we are set!! Than January 22 I call the office because we hadnt received a delivery since the first one of the winter and our propane tanks were down to 20% and we have a 5 year old and a 1 year old at home and didnt want to run out and the lady looked it up and told me yes you are on auto delivery and that you are schedule for a delivery Monday the 25th okay not a problem. So now its Sunday the 31st and its cold and dinner is cooking on the stove which is also propane and it goes out!! So I go out to the tanks and there down around 3-4% so my wife calls and the the on call guy is very nice and he came out at 2 hours later which is no big deal I get that and fills the tanks so my children can be warm!! Now my wife calls today 2-2-16 to make sure we are not being charged a extra fee for an emergency deliver because its not our fault! And she gets from the very rude lady we dont even have a contract for you or your house!!! Come on people get your act in gear and do your jobs in the office like your suppose to be doing!!! Blue Flame is looking way better at this point I know that! So it might be more money somewhere else but it will be worth it in the end to use somebody else!!!!So I going to say that on 2-2-16 Nancy whom is the office manager called to rectify the situation in which she was very nice and very apologetic to my wife about the way she was treated by the office help and to the effect of us running out of propane and made sure that all the contracts are correct and also fixed the pricing mistakes that have taken place. Also if there are any further issues to contact her so it can be rectified correctly and efficiently kudos to Nancy and thank you from Josh and Jaime Parent.

Major price spike last month that brought them more than $.50 more per gallon higher than the county average (as tracked by nyserda). they have also apparently changed their policy of making due date on bills one month from delivery to immediately. will be switching companies as soon as possible, highly suggest looking elsewhere.

Waited around all day Mon and I finally called them around 2:30 and they told me I was scheduled for Tues. I have the voicemail that says Mon but whatever. I called Tues around 2:30 and they said I was scheduled for Wed! I told them never mind! What reputable company just reschedules appts without contacting the customer to see if thats OK??

I have had a contract with this company for a few years but this year the service has just been atrocious! I have been trying to get my boiler cleaned since Aug and keep getting rescheduled. I have had to take time off to meet them (which costs me $$$) only to be called after the appointed time to tell me they have to reschedule. This last week, they made an appointment to do the work and never called and never showed! All their talk about customer service is just that ------TALK! I am searching for a new company.

Absolutely one of the worst propane gas providers in the area from all angles. They control their facebook page and only post positive reviews and comments. If you criticize them in any way shape or form, the post never makes it to the page. The company lied from day 1 stating that my LP price would be based on amount used. We use about 600 gallons a year and our last fill of 200 gallons was $4.79 a gallon! I get gas for my bbq grill at Uhaul for $2.25! I tried to buy 275 gal of fuel oil from them in the spring for my garage and just as another reviewer said, they were too busy to take my money. I couldnt even get a call back to discuss pricing as they were almost 70 cents per gallon over the nearest competitor. Bottom line, if you like paying the highest prices in the land for the worst customer service you will ever come across short of 1st Fuel and propane, look no further. Galway co-op is $1.88 per gallon today for the same propane I just paid $4.79 for through John Ray.

I just bought a house with an oil boiler and I havent had a chance to become a customer of any oil company. Well, the boiler stops working and I have no heat. A sticker on the boiler states to call John Ray for service, so I call them. A woman on the phone states a tech will call me back. He did in fact call me back. After about five minutes of listening to a condescending technician, he tells me he cant help because Im not a customer. I was shaking my head in disgust over the techs attitude and the fact that I couldnt get help on an emergency situation, because I wasnt a customer (yet!). Guess what? They certainly will not have me as a customer now!
