We were initially hesitant to buy a car “online” but the process couldn’t have been better. We got the exact vehicle we wanted at the price we wanted. There’s no way we’d have found that truck via traditional means in our region. We ended up having it shipped up from North Carolina! Everyone we worked with was amazing and enthusiastic. The day we bought the truck we were in and out in 20 minutes. No stress. They know what they’re doing and they’re good at it. I will only buy cars from CarMax. They have never let me down. This is the second car that Ive purchased from CarMax, and both times I scored deals that everyone else in my life was amazed at. Cars only a year or two old that look brand new, with loaded options and low miles for really great prices. I also hate negotiating for cars with a passion, so another plus for CarMax in my book. The employees dont make commission based on the particular car that they sell you, so they are extremely honest and helpful. Finally, if that wasnt enough, you can shop all their cars on their website and even have cars shipped to your local CarMax to test drive with no obligation to buy. I am a huge fan of CarMax and will return to them the next time I need to purchase a car.

I have purchased 6 cars from CarMax in Des Moines over the years. I have purchased else where as well and candidly, I wish I hadn’t.. Every single car I hav purchased from CarMax has been amazing!! From the quality of their cars, to their sales and business office staff. Every car I have purchased has had no major issues at all. Tires and brakes were very good and lasted. While I do not like the no haggle on the price or trade in value; I will say the price you pay for a very good quality car is worth it. My last purchase was a few weeks ago, my sales person was great!! I went to several dealerships with my BMW and was offered a very small amount for a pristine low mileage BMW.. CarMax offered almost double all other dealerships in the area, I knew I should have started with them first..I purchased my 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was given an amazing interest rate and had equity from my BMW! I ended up taking advantage of the love your ride guarantee, and switched my vehicle out for a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee 80th Anniversary Edition, with 7k miles on it.. basically a brand new vehicle for a used vehicle price. It was an easy process and my sales man Joe and sale manager Eric were a pleasure to work with. Joe is a great sales man as well as just really cool and down to earth! He made me feel welcome, not pressured and simply a joy to speak with. Joe even personally cleaned a little area in my new vehicle that I was not satisfied with; going above and beyond his job duties. He also came in on his day off to be there for the delivery of my new vehicle. Eric, your help through the process was awesome! Even with a few system glitches you got it taken care of and got me exactly what I had wanted. I had no problem paying to have my car shipped because it was exactly the car I wanted to buy and CarMax made it happen. Not only did they get me approved they delivered the exact payment structure I wanted.My new car had an issue with the ac and CarMax covered the $1200 repair and rented me a car while it was being repaired as part of their after purchase warranty.I wont buy a car anywhere else theres just no one like CarMax out there. Way to go CarMax. Youre above the competition!!!
I got an appraisal in May just to get an idea of my cars value. When I started to get serious about selling the car, a subsequent appraisal jumped by $1500! I was extremely pleased and sold it to CarMax. The whole process could not have goe any better or any more smoothly!

When I originally brought my car in for an appraisal they gave me one price, then when I brought it back in to sell, I was then told that it had mechanical problems and got a new appraisal for 30% less money. Definitely felt like I was bait and switched.The rest of the process was smooth and quick, but it was not an overall good experience.
Didnt have the same excellent experience others had. Ordered a vehicle, spent time on the phone with a representative getting finance set up and placing order. Vehicle needed to be delivered from another location and I was told to wait a week. Upon hearing nothing for a week, called the local CarMax number to get an update. Was told the vehicle had been redirected to another location for another buyer. There was no phone call, email update, or any attempt to engage customer satisfaction. I had to call to find out. Emailed local dealership to get further help and explanation. However, Its been several days without any return contact of my correspondence. Buyer beware.
Aside from a few title issues this was the best experience Ive ever had buying a car. Start to finish. Renee was awesome with the financing and keeping me updated on the progress with the title. Sold our car to carmax and got a good price. Process was pretty quick (hour or so). Everyone in the store seemed pretty laid back and genuine. In most dealerships I feel like they drag everything out to just get you to sign, didnt get that feeling here. Ive already told my neighbor and he hopes to get a good offer for his car.
Worst car buying experience Ive ever had.Leaving this review so others are aware of the car buying situation i experienced with carmax. 22 days ago, i got approved for a car. Paid for it to be shipped. Arrived 2 days later. 20 days after arrival, they still are unable to find the title and said it will take MONTHS to do so. So i have to find a new car. After asking, they are refunding me. Did not offer this until i asked. Was told to find a different car so i found 2, those 2 apparently cannot be shipped in because they dont have the titles. Was showed 2 other cars that THEY found for me as replacements, but after agreeing found they are already in transfer for others. So i wasted an entire month trying desperately to get a car i qualified for (over 20k budget available) to walk away upset, refunded, but this still leaves me with a credit hit that will stay on my record for 2 years. This has been the worst car buying experience Ive ever experienced. And while Im being refunded the 300 shipping fee for the CAR THEY WERE LETTING ME BUY, im just out of luck on now not getting a car, and my credit took a heavy hit with the inquiry that was done based on a car they told me they could sell me. Beyond unhappy. Will highly recommend buying from ANY business that is not this one. They genuinely have no idea what they are doing or where the documents are to the vehicles they advertise.
I love the car but the buying experience was stressful. The buyers order that carmax sent to my bank was incorrect. So the bank cut me a check for the purchase price but then during the final paperwork piece at the dealers, they said I owed an additional $2000 AND they only would take a debit card. I ended up having to call my bank during the evening hours and get them to transfer money over so that I could pay the difference. Luckily I was able to do this but I was NOT happy about it. Additionally, they claimed to have done a 120 point inspection on the car but missed the fact that the brake pads were worn along with the rotors. We had to take the car back to them a week later and they did replace the brakes at no charge. But still....you would think the brake inspection would be 1 of the 120 point inspection.
I had not purchased vehicles from CARMAX before. I have to say that they exceeded my expectations. Besides the fact that I am really happy with my car, I need to say that customer service was exceptional. Grant was my salesperson, and he absolutely worked with me in finding the ideal car. He was very responsive, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. His customer service was the reason why I stuck with CARMAX. Victor was another CarMax representative that answered a lot of questions for me. I definitely recommend!

I thought everything went great. You have my car but a week later I still dont have the payment. Its ridiculous. Carmax would not accept the reverse so why are they expecting there customers to? I feel like my car has been stolen.
Sold a vehicle here recently and it was a very easy experience! The entire process took a little over an hour. Staff was friendly and they 100% matched the online appraisal I had done. Decided to sell our once heavily used 2007 Honda Accord and when looking up private party value on Edmunds.com, got notification of a CARMAX offer at an amount slightly above that value. Instead of putting up for sale on internet, went to CARMAX and after they inspected, was paid the amount of the offer. Was very happy to get car sold so quickly for a reasonable amount without the hassle of selling vehicle to a private party.

My wife and I bought a car from here a few months ago. The car buying process with CarMax was very seamless - the staff was very friendly and the process was easy. The reason for the 4 star rating (instead of 5) was an incident that happened when the car we bought was being “prepped” to leave the lot with us. For whatever reason, the filters were swapped out and they had put in the wrong filter. We did not notice this until the next day where oil from the car leaked all over my garage and made a huge mess. Unfortunately for us, we were headed out of town that day and couldn’t get the car in until a week later. I will say that dealing with CarMax’s service department was easy and the car got fixed up right away. It’s just an unfortunate event as it’s not what you’d be expecting with a car that you had just bought.
I purchased a car through this location about 3 months ago. During that time the stock was super low and I had to have a vehicle transferred in. Now this process took a little over a month! & I had paid a good dollar to have the car ship!When I tell you not many of the workers were helpful at this location in my process of trying to find a car. The lady that initially was going to help me, never followed back up with me! UNPROFESSIONAL.Thank GOD for the online reps. The guy at the call center was SUPER helpful! 4 STARSHe understood that I needed time and information on the vehicles. He gave me great input on my selections and was super helpful ! I hear that is because they are not on commission. Which is unfortunate, because regardless I was going to buy a car due to my last car being totaled.. Just needed some guidance and patiences.Then once I transferred the car in, nowww the people at the location wanted to be helpful..The guy that I was placed with was super nice but NOT familiar with the vehicle I purchased! I think when youre trying to wrap up a sell, you should become familiar with the car at hand and be able to give the customer great feedback to help them feel confident in their choice...The window in my car was off track and I had informed the salesman about the issue. He stated that he had it looked over and it was fine, it was just how the window was made.. BSI later took the car back to the repair section of CARMAX and the guy was able to hear exactly what I was referring to and fixed it! That was GREAT! NO BS just a resolution to my problem :) AUTO REPAIR GETS 4 stars !But I love my purchase ! & The sales guy was super nice.
Would give zero stars if possible! Absolutely no follow through!! Paid for a car to be transferred here, had my credit ran and accepted a financing option. Was told there was an error on the title, waited patiently but had to hunt employees down to find out why the title hasn’t been transferred here. Was told after a month that the title was sent to the DMV. I called the DMV 3.5 weeks later to verify and they had no record of a title being sent in & every last manager and employee is clueless as to where the title is. DMV encouraged me to fill out a dealership investigation through the Enforcement Division as the person I am financing through should have legally received the title after 30 days and it is going on 2 months!! Was told the manager who was helping me is not available and they are unsure when he is coming back.. I advise everyone to not go through them!

I am usually that guy that hates 5 stars on reviews, because we all can do better. BUT... I must give CarMax and specifically CarMax of Des Moines 5 STARS! I was very nervous selling my truck online; but I must say, each step was flawlessly easy. They directed me through each step online, then directed me to my local CarMax for inspection. There, we were greeted very warmly and professionally. The showroom was immaculate, and all the employees were happy and joking around. They were spot on with other customers, whether they were selling or buying. They walked us through each step, and made us feel welcome. The customer service girl (Seada) was top notch, and very friendly. She made us feel like family. We are very happy with our experience at CarMax. Thank You Seada and CarMax!
STAY AWAY!After spending weeks looking for the perfect car, I finally found it through Carmax. It was located in a different state and Carmax required me to pay a $700 shipping fee. Not ideal, but whatever. Its so hard to find cars in this market I was willing to pay a little extra for what I wanted. I anxiously waited 3 WEEKS for Carmax to deliver the car to the Urbandale location.Then everything absolutely fell apart. I was told over the phone by the sales manager Matt that the cars title didnt have enough room for me to sign and take ownership. He said they would need to send it back to California where the car was originally purchased and would take 4, 8, maybe even 12 weeks. Honestly I was already 3 weeks and $700 in so I was willing to wait.Then it got worse. I asked Matt to tell me exactly what the issue was and he emailed me saying it was a problem with Polk county and would take 6 to 8 months to resolve!So Ive been told the problem is with California, but then its actually Polk county. Ive been told it will take 4 to 12 weeks, oh wait its actually 6 to 8 months. They have absolutely no idea what theyre doing and the fact that they listed a car for sale before even clearing the title is pure stupidity.Im now starting over the entire process of searching for a car. Do yourself a favor and just stick to local dealers.
Very friendly staff and sales people. Open communication and no pressure.Im editing my review. I was run around trying to test drive a vehicle. Said vehicle had sat on the lot since last August, so had unknown status. I scheduled a time to go back, and discovered the salesperson had either forgotten or disregarded me, as no appointment had been scheduled for me. I was not able to test drive the vehicle, and my confidence in the place is greatly reduced. The people are still nice, and pressure is still low, but competency is questionable.
Peter did a great job of helping us get the car we wanted delivered to his store and keeping us informed of the progress. From start to finish the process was very smooth.
My biggest gripe with Carmax is that they dont allow bartering or anything when you buy a vehicle. However, theyre prices are fair, and after hearing about and seeing first-hand their high standards for the cars they sell, I was impressed. I would definitely buy from them again. The icing on the cake is that they send you out the door with a full tank of gas which is something that few people do. Its an inexpensive thing to do that makes me feel like the experience of buying a car there is about me, and not about them making money.

Experience started off pretty good. Went downhill from there. Paid $600 to have a $32000 truck transferred from another CarMax location to the Des Moines location. The arrival date changed multiple times and when it did finally arrive it sat there for 2 days before I had to call to find out that it was there. No one bothered to notify me, even though they were well aware we would be coming from over 2 hours away and would need notice. When we eventually went to pick up the vehicle the place was a mad house, extremely disorganized and the sales guy kept switching between us and other sales.I probably wouldn’t purchase another vehicle from them.
Good service... but... watch it when dealing here. Nearly lost out got stuck with a car because the salesman confused odometers. They were good enough to recognize their mistake and refunded allowed for a give back. Double check basic mechanics of the car.(alignment was what got me to return mine) otherwise was a good experience. Friendly staff... and the pricing was decent.
I paid $1000 to have a Kia Sorento transferred a month ago. After my car arrived early I was told they are waiting on the title. I drove to this location to test drive the car (which is an hour from where I love). I was told I could only test drive it for a max of 20 minutes as Carmax still didn’t have it. I was told I would get a call in a week after this to update me. About 2 weeks later I called since no one called me. I was told to call the store the car was transferred from so I did. I was told by a person at that store to call another Carmax they got the car from. I did. Both stores did not have the title EVER. I was told the title was lost and I’m better off paying to transfer another car. I was told Carmax would cover the transfer fee. However, the only car close to what I ordered was $1000 more. I was told due to Carmax “no hassle policy” they can’t do anything price wise to help. Bare in mind if you added up all the phone call time this took about 7-8 hours to figure out. AVOID THIS DEALERSHIP LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!

CarMax sold me a car with mold in it, not disclosing it. When i asked to return the car for a full refund, all they offered was to buy it back. I lost money in fees and taxes. And with car values being up during the pandemic i missed out on opportunity cost as well, since i can no longer get a similar car for the same price.

Super disappointed that twice now I have purchased a 30k+ vehicle and it’s dirty. Windshield washer fluid out, etc. not to mention the shipping charge I incurred. If I’m paying for that, things should be toppedOff and the vehicle clean. Disappointed

I had such a great experience at Carmax! The 24-hour test drive was a huge perk. My salesman Kevin was so patient and friendly, and was never pushy like other dealerships I’d shopped at. From getting my old car appraised, trading it in, completing my sale, and driving home my new car, I felt comfortable every step of the way.

Oh where do I begin! First I found a car in Des Moines Iowa, five hours from home, but I loved the color of the Mazda3 and have friends in the area, so I didnt mind the drive. To this point everything was wonderful (except the fact the demand you apply for credit for each car you test drive). Only a couple days after getting the car I realized it just wasnt for me. Thats okay, carmax offers 30 day returns. Since we live closer to omaha and didnt want to take anymore time off of work, we looked for vehicles at that location. I called Des Moines to assure I could take my car back to Omaha instead of bringing it to Des Moines, they said yes, of course, as long as its carmax. The following week we found a Honda Pilot and drove three hours to Omaha. We test drove the Pilot and said yes, lets trade the Mazda3 for the Honda. I had everything with me from Des Moines, including the title Car Max had FedEx to me. We were sitting at the desk signing papers when the manager came over to inform us that we would have to take the car back to Des Moines and they would have to ship the Honda to Des Moines to meet us. Oh, and for our trouble wed get a free tank of gas. Now mind you, we had to drive three hours home, in the opposite direction of Des Moines to wait 5 days before we could drive five hours to do the trade with the Mazda and Honda. Since its so far, I reserved a hotel in Osceola. I had been nervous all week about not going over the allotted miles and keeping the car in perfect condition. Directly after work we got on the road, and just before crossing over into Iowa from Nebraska, a huge deer took it upon himself to wreck the car we were returning to CarMax. We had to bend out the fender to be able to keep driving though I could only go straight and left. We were leaking antifreeze, but not so badly we could drive. The hood was folded up and hard to see over, but we had no choice but to drive it since it was 10:30 at night and no car rental place was open, plus wed already paid for the hotel. Fast forward to our 2pm appointment at CarMax the following day. Now the $1300 deposit I put on the Mazda was gone. But my honey had told me to buy gap insurance, so I thought wed be okay money-wise. Des Moines CarMax approved us for a loan for the Honda with no money down (higher interest of course). That day all the salesmen said or situation was unfortunate - yes, I understood that much). Upon arriving home I was frustrated and tried calling Carmax in Omaha (who forced us to drive to Iowa) but I couldnt get a manager to take my call. I still had hope the money thing would work out and called CarMax Corporate. By this point the insurance company decided the vehicle was a total loss. The woman at Corporate was sympathetic and said they would need to insure that would never happen to someone else and she couldnt fathom why they wouldnt do the exchange in Omaha. But she never called back as promised. At this point, I just wanted my deposit back, never mind gas and hotels and the $900 that DMV wanted. At the very least, I wanted an apology. Id also explained to her that my insurance couldnt move forward until I payed $900 to register the totaled car and how I was on disability for a muscle condition and took a part time job to pay for my new car and there was no way I could afford to pay to register both of the vehicles. Like I said, she was sympathetic but when my situation was explained to her colleagues, they hushed the entire issue. I got an email from someone else at corporate stating I was responsible for the money needed to be paid to DMV. Again, no apology. They got their money. My misfortune, due to their inconsistent rules, and what I assume was laziness on their part, has cost me bills I cant afford to pay and has left a bitter taste in my mouth. CarMax has kept sending me reminders to fill out the review of their company. Almost a month has passed and I finally was able to write the review they asked for.
Waste of time! Drove from another state to sell my vehicle got they got through the pre check part but when came to looking at the vehicle NO OME COULD FIND THE KEYS. The vehicle was towed there and keys were left in the managers office and no one had a clue. I was calling the tow company and 3 different departments were looking for the key. Once I finally got a text from one of the guys at the tow company I relayed the message and the guy had an extremely confused look on his face. He went to look and BOOM HE HAD THEY KEY than proceeded to act like nothing happened not a we are sorry or anything than the proceeded to low ball the hell out of my truck. Yeah I needed a new engine but there was so much on that truck that was in very good shape I have but a lot of money into that truck. The service guy that did the inspection tells me carmax just try to break even this truck will easily go for 5k if not.more in action. This place is a joke
7 years a customer and the financing department screwed me. You might find a very few good people at a store but overall the service is horrible. High interest rates for financing and cars seem to be overpriced. It’s easy to miss important things if you don’t know the complete in and outs and/or you trust the people you are with through the store or personally to assist you. I’ve taken responsibility for my part in the mistakes but carmax finance not only didn’t want to help but when I asked for assistance on this situation I was hung up on many times and the first person I talked to after my car was hit and run gave me the run around told me I couldn’t refinance and was extremely rude and short with me. The customer service was very poor except for the guy who sold me the car. I also was in Colorado last summer and in the middle of my vacation the rear view mirror fell off. There are lots of little things they claim to check but clearly do not. When I got my Nissan 4ish years ago I found an old cannabis blunt in the trunk. I will be writing a review on all platforms. Unfortunate but I do not recommend buying cars here

Im very pleased with my entire CarMax experience! It was easy to find what I wanted online and the vehicle arrived in great condition. I chose to have another shop check it out . The few items found were quickly addressed by CarMax and the sales and customer service folks were congenial and helpful! Who could ask for more? Thanks!
CarMax provided a very good dealership experience. The process was haggle-free, just as expected, and our car came with a 90-day/4,000 mile warranty from CarMax, on top of the residual factory warranty. The best part was when CarMax offered us over $1500 more for our trade-in than anyone else. I will definitely return to CarMax when the time comes to get another car.
First visit to get car appraised was good except someone typed my email in wrong so never recd offer. by time I realized one wasnt coming. I called and your telephone guy saw the error. I went back in the following Monday got the same appraisel amount and sold the car. Very smooth and apologetic for previous mistake.

Made the appointment without difficulty. Staff was friendly and efficient. The offer was better than I expected so I accepted it. Wasnt having much luck trying to do a private sale so was pleased with result.

Keep in mind that this was during a pandemic.Great people to work with. Very nice facility.3 minor complaints:We found exactly the vehicle we wanted, but it took 6-8 weeks to get the vehicle. After 2 weeks we still dont have the title.The tank was only 1/2 full.The vehicle was not clean. The dash had adhesive spots and the inside of windshield was dirty. The exteprior was covered with bug spots.

Salesmen were awesome and try the best they can, I’ve been there 4 times 2 times of which I didn’t have enough but every time that floor manager Erik is there I have even more trouble then the previous even took my brother in law there and he gave him a hard time I guess it’s because we look “hood” or something but my money the same buddy officially done with that place could of put w.e down but no this time my vehicle registration was expired so they wouldn’t take the trade in but last time it wasn’t a problem.
Second vehicle we have purchased there and second time it has been a great experience. Very easy process and you can get through the process relatively quickly.
