We dropped by on a road trip from Houston to Denver, and what a marvelous surprise! Museum director Sherry Yocum was very accommodating and knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed this experience! It was one of the most beautiful wildlife displays we have ever seen. You can see wild animals at the zoo but you can really get up close and see the texture of the fur, the colors, it was incredible. Big quite a display of indigenous peoples tools found in the area. They also had a great deal of information on the history of the Red River Valley in their Museum which was located in Vernon, Texas. BEAUTIFUL!
You talk about a hidden gem. We stopped in just to see what a museum in seemingly the middle of know where. We were just going to run in look and see for about a half hour....2 hours later we said we were coming back.Have not seen anything so complete with animal mounts from across the world.Polar bear was over 8 tall....

The Red River Valley Museum was an unexpected and delightful GEM! Highly recommend. The exhibits were well laid out and informative - they rival the quality of a much larger museum. I had no idea the Vernon area had such a rich history. The staff was knowledgeable and readily available. Cooper, our tour guide, was especially helpful. Thank you!
