A really cool, clean and tidy, small comic book shop. Walked in and the gentleman behind the counter was extremely welcoming without being suffocating. I was able to look over their collection of back issues, which was of decent size, and greatly enjoyed my experience. Bought a couple of F4 and wolverine back issues and am currently enjoying them. Will be back!
Read some of the reviews already, and based on past experiences from years ago under the previous owner, I can agree that there was an unwelcome feeling in the shop between hiked up prices, the owners/clerks attitude, etc. However, some time has passed and I have the shop another chance. My first visit in over a year went as follows: I walk in and the gentleman, Glenn, who I learn is the new owner, is chatting it up with a local artist who is trying to promote her new comic. I show my interest in the comic and he rings me up as the artists first customer there. On top of that, the aesthetic has definitely changed: its still a small shop, but it feels a bit more open-spaced than what it previously was. As for the prices, theyre getting there, and the owner is willing to work with you. Overall, the experience was good enough to change from a just passing through vibe to more of a stay and play vibe.Through talking with the owner, Ive shared my past experiences there and he definitely listened. So far it sounds like hes trying to turn things around, and after that visit in willing to give him the chance. Fantasy feels like the new hangout spot for me, and Ive been encouraging a few friends here and there to check it out.Im glad to have a new spot to hang out at.
This is an amazing comic and card shop for anyone looking to buy sell or trade comics, magic cards, or Pokemon cards. They have great staff and a great atmosphere there
Prices were amazing, customer service was amazing to me and my girlfriend, I also received free green lantern rings! It was trip well spent
Super friendly and great customer service. Prices that are incomparable. 😊
As a comic shop they have an awesome variety. Unfortunately I came for cards and they seem to only sell MTG. I did end up buying a beautiful thor figure at such a great price I would be insane not to buy it. All the prices are more than fair and general nice atmosphere.
Fantastic prices for a fantastic selection of cards and comics. When we walked in the clerk was having a conversation with a regular and saw my friend and I and immediately paused his conversation to see what we came in for, and was very helpful in finding us anything we needed. Definitely will be going back.
Better than Comic Kings. Friendly atmosphere more respectful
The man who was working there the day me and my oldest grandson popped in was very accommodating. My grandson was looking for Pokémon cards and despite the current shortage at some places for new cards, he (at that time) found a few new ( and collectors editions) that my grandson liked.
Great customer service. Very welcoming and patient with me. Quality products at a fair price. Will visit again
Smaller store with a very friendly and polite staff. Impressive inventory of Magic the Gathering products. In-store gaming allowed at this time for small groups. Large inventory of back issues for collectors to browse. Great location near many restaurants and eateries.
I visited this shop a few days ago and had a great experience. I was immediately greeted by the owner and asked if I needed any help. I mentioned that I was looking for some advice and was hoping they could offer some as well as tips on selling my card collection. Unfortunately, the shop doesnt deal with buying or selling my particular cards at this time. HOWEVER, they did have knowledge in these cards and were happy to educate me as well as give advice with selling them. I gave them 5 stars because they knew right off the bat that I most likely wasnt going to purchase anything, and they werent going to gain anything from buying. They took time from their day when they didnt have to.
Very clean and updated Graphic Novel store.Management and Staff are always helpful.Atmosphere is diversity based and always relaxed.I recommend anyone to visit and come in to see for yourself this growing store.
Stopped by because I was a little bored and with my kid just to window shop. Owner was very amicable and understanding as I browsed. MTG cards were very competitively priced against TCG and the local area. Also offered a military discount which is always appreciated. Even my kiddo got a free tootsie roll pop. Ill definitely shop here again when Im looking for singles.
Great store! The owner was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The overall appearance of the store was neat, clean, and organized. Great selection of current comics. Will definitely be revisiting and making more purchases.
Drafted at the shop a week ago. Had a great time. Friendly staff, huge product selection, and fair prices. 10/10 would recommend
Great place, been there multiple times, have the best Card selections for MTG outing any other store Ive been to, and the manager and staff are friendly and very helpful. Great small business to shop at
This store was organized and clean. Im not much a trading card game player any more. They have a large play area for TCGs. It makes it a little tight to shop for comics as the store is on the smaller side. I did find a Skottie Young variant that I was looking for there!
Glenn greeted me as soon as I came through the door and wished me a good day as I left. He was friendly and cordial the entire time and seems to truly enjoy his work. The store is clean and has a good layout. There are plenty of comics from all genres and Magic the Gathering cards galore. I personally enjoyed browsing the Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon cards. Glenn pointed out the drawings on the front wall, and they all are from local artists which is pretty cool. I thought everything in the store was reasonably priced, especially the statues and figures. I will definitely be coming back.
Large selection of comics and trading cards. Ample space to not feel rushed looking at items.
Treats you like family and can always find what you want or order it for you. Super clean and great social distancing practice. Very clean and covid efficient
The workers are friendly and attentive. If you are a magic player you can find some great deals. Some of the cards are overpriced here and there but if you point it out they will gladly double check and adjust. I have been twice so far and see no reason to stop giving them my business.
Very cool place! The guys there were awesome. Highly recommend.
Great place to find hidden treasures! Awesome selection of figures, comics, and magic cards!
Great store. New management has been hard at work revamping things a bit and the prices are very reasonable on singles, boosters, and boxes too.
Great knowledge of comics! Helpful!
If youre into comic books this is the place to go!!
Store was alright, the guy working was decent and seemed nice. The selection of magic cards is really big, but the problem is the prices seemed to be double the standard price. Where did they get their prices? Card kingdom? No wonder they have so many magic cards, because the prices are jacked up to the ceiling! If they want to sell more magic cards, they should rely on tcg for the most sufficient value of selling their cards. Or maybe a price match would be cool too. I would recommend comic Kings and tower of games, they have great prices on their magic cards! Better atmosphere as well! Or better yet, just buy off of tcg online. This store would have more business if they could ease down on the prices. Good store for just looking around and browsing and coming up with ideas for decks, but not the shop to buy the cards.
Pretty OK comic store that does have a tiny bit of MTG and Dungeons and Dragons. Went in to look for a specific book that all other local shops had sold out of. Upon looking into the Rule book, i started to read out a certain section to a buddy of mine who is also into D&D, he then enforced a No Read Rule. Now this is a understandable rule being a comic shop that sells pretty short comics, but a rule book that contains hundreds of pages on knowledge and rules for that expansion seems a bit excessive. If you want someone to fall in love with fantasy and comics like we did as kids, maybe go a little lighter on this rule. Consider maybe having a certain section of No Reading when it is actual short story comics but for a long rule book it turned me and my friend out the door when deciding on this purchase.
Solid shop with new management and solid staff.
Husband loves this place!
Hmm, as I read these reviews, I see some good and some not so good...the main theme of the idea behind replying to comments should be, at a minimum, act like you care about being in the service industry. Id suggest hiring someone who understands that you CANNOT argue with patrons who come in and give you their hard earned money. Its really shocking to read an owner or media manager replying to customers the way this place does. I have a feeling if VA Beach didnt have 450,000 residents, who a great percentage of them read comics, play games and collect action figures, you all would be out of a job. Heres some free advice. 1 good experience, and maybe that person tells a friend. 1 bad experience and that person will tell Google. Maybe something to consider.
So I went hear looking for a new place to purchase comics after moving from California and found a small store which I dont have a problem with but the prices were to high, on average a few dollars higher than I am use to, also the back issue selection is terrible. Upon asking questions about the area the guy working there just blew me off, not the interaction Im use to and a bad business model. Dont waste your time hear theres plenty of other places in the area to take youre business. First and last time Ill visit this place.
The employees are passionate about comics. The group that plays magic there is really laid back. The shop has a large selection of magic singles, collectible comic book figures, and comics.
Went here at 450 pm on december 2nd 2019 and there was a note on the door that said will return in 10 minutes. Waited until 525 pm in the parking lot and tried the door a few times during it and then left whem they had failed to reopen. Will change when able to accuratle able to judge service.
This place is great! The selection is pretty big and the staff is always friendly and helpful. The whole place including the bathroom is impeccably clean. Id definately reccomend visiting!
Very welcoming!I went in recently and the owner was there -- he was very helpful and wanted to make sure I found what I needed. It is a little out of the way for me but I will try to stop by time to time. The store is small but is neatly organized.
Helpful and easy to talk to
Always friendly happy to help staff. Always clean and cycles stock fairly frequently. This place never fails to be one of the best experiences in town.
Great little comic shop. Owner was friendly and receptive, but let me browse his comics without hounding me. Will stop in there anytime Im in Virginia Beach.
I have been going the Fantasy Escape Comics for several years now. When I started going, I lived in Norfolk and worked off Aragona, Ave. I now live in North Carolina near the OBX. I drive up to see Bob and his crew every month. They are well knowledged and most helpful when it comes to what Im looking for. I like the setup, I can find everything Im looking for and if I dont Bob will! This is what a local comic shop should look like!
Don’t believe all the bad reviews. The singles are priced high but the staff will usually work with you on price. The real reason I go is for the weekly draft tornaments on sundays. They have a great turnout and solid prize support. They fire regularly which is more than I can say for a lot of stores. Their regulars are very welcoming and not overly competitive. They are good with new players and kids. Makes me sad to see all the hateful people trashing a local game shop. Some really nasty people out there I guess l.
Was in the area to visit family and decided to go to a LGS to see what kind of cards were available for purchase. The store had a shallow amount of cards and were almost 20% above TCG high but I get it, when you are right off the beach you have to hike prices. The shop owner came across very dry and didnt seem to want me there. I continued to just look and see what was around before I asked about prices. I was told that they refresh prices once or twice a month and everything had just been refreshed. I look again and decided to leave. It is possible I came on a day where he was having a terrible day, but this is how my first take was. Also if you are a commander player, its not a place for you. Much to small for pods and mostly everyone are Standard players.Hopefully the store changes its tunes, but judging from some of these comments; it seems that it is very unlikely.
My husband was greatly angered. Children are not permitted in this store, even if they are behaved. My husband got the distinct impression that the owner doesnt like kids what so ever. Even though my child who is on the spectrum loves comics and understands proper handling. My husband regrets he even purchased anything. He was informed the brick and mortor store is only for tax purposes and he caters to online sales only.
Rude manager. They were unwilling to even recommend a place for me to sell my cards. I will never go back to this comic shop because of the rude manager.
Took a while for the sales clerk to acknowledge our presence and then what we purchased was over proceed compared to other stores
I had a great experience at this shop. the girl working was knowledgeable about the cards and the owner was very helpful. A++
Prices are higher then ALL other shops, FNM are horrible because the person running them also plays. I have given this business multiple opportunities to get my business back and each attempt was thanked by unfulfilled promises. You would be better off going 2 miles up the road to a premier shop (excellent prices and all the books/mtg cards you could ever want). This area is too inundated with card/comic shops to have to tolerate high prices and lackluster customer service.
Horribly overpriced magic the gathering singles does not go by tcg pricing goes by star city games who is been accused of price fixing and gouging. One card that comes to mind was a regular non pre release foil assassins trophy and the price was $59 dollars when the cards actual value is $29 dollars. Then on bulk rares of ravnica allegiance they were mostly all marked $3 dollars when I know for a fact not all bulk rares are 3 dollars each. This store is the poster child of store owners crying the internet is putting me out of business or the typical Im a brick and mortar store and I have to cover overhead. Newsflash thats just the cost of doing business store owner. Also the guy in there tonight was rude and I was made to feel like what ever I tried to show him on pricing or give him help on things i was made to feel like he couldnt care less and just wanted me to leave. Which to me shows he knows the cards are over priced but hes just an employee and cant do anything about it. Long story short dont buy from this store as youre only knowingly robbing your self go to comic kings in va beach or atomic comics in Hampton/Newport news or Atlantis cards and comics in Norfolk. Dont over pay and be treated poorly at the same time.
I have visited the stored recently and have been very pleased with the selection of books and the customer service. I would highly recommend anyone that is interested in comics and/or cards to check it out.
As a Comic Book Collector of Supergirl since the 1980s, I thought I would try this Fantasy Escape and I must admit, the previous reviews are correct. I noticed a SUPERGIRL comic that was taped to the side of their cabinets with the price tag on it.The employees were playing cards and had to call their owner who was home mowing his lawn to get permission to remove the comic from the side of the cabinet. He wanted me to come in on another day when he was there for it was on Display.I even offered to purchase ten more comic books and told me to still come back.So much for customer service when I guess making a dollar does not even matter.
Everyone is super nice and inviting and i’ve never failed to feel at home here
Jim Lee is the MAN! Need the special variant issue? Collectibles, Graphic Novels, Toys and more. Great shop!
Shop doesnt have an inventory it convenient way of checking rare cards in stock. Prices are outdated. Didnt accept trades even for rare or mythic cards.Edit: rating dropped to 2 star. The store closes more than 10 minutes prior to the posted closing time. The store also tries to respond to my original comment with incorrect information.
I arrived 30 minutes before they closed and called ahead and he slammed the door in my face and said they’re closed. I will not be coming back. The older gentlemen is an a**hole
Staff was friendly and took time to listen and answered questions without being judgemental about my knowledge or therefore lack of knowledge. Will definitely be going back.
I see some bad reviews but this place is awesome good selection of comics old and new cool action figures and statues Im not sure what people are complaining about
There have been a lot of bad reviews on this place but I have to say just because he is a small business doesnt mean its bad business. It is a small shop, but that doesnt mean its bad. His magic prices are high for cards, but in his defense he does use the pricing posted on various websites for the value of the cards. It is a small business and will not and cannot have the same prices as ebay. I also collect comics and being a small store he doesnt have a huge variety and cant carry everything but does have all of the most popular comics and plenty of back issues as well. Also a side not if you dont like a price then that means you have a price in mind....Make an offer I have on many occasions and got the price I wanted.
WORST so called comic book store ever. There is more to comics then what is in the D.C. Universe and Marvel, WAY MORE. This store should be called Card Game store because thats really all there is in that store. Also, the owner either; ignores me the whole time, or gives me evil looks. They have a horrible selection, a horrible staff, and bottom line Atlas Comics in Charlottesville, VA blows these guys away (Heck, even Barnes and Nobel has a better comic book section).
WOW! So many options and various comic related items, from statutes, busts, posters etc. Great place to go for pop-culture related merchandise.
The playing area will give you claustrophobia. There are far better places to go to like Comic Kings or either Atlantis Games and Comics locations.
Very nice layout. Helpful and friendly service.
Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Well lighted and clean.
Not impressed. Ive visited several times over the years as I get in and out of Magic the Gathering. Their selection is OK, they have a lot of older sets as well as new ones, but they are WAAAY overpriced when compared to other local shops. The female owner is nice, however her husband seems like he hates everything and acts like youre about to steal something (I could understand if i looked sketchy, but I would come in a collared shirt after work and Im a pretty pleasant customer to interact with). The store is very small, the pre-release events and FNM Ive participated in have been very cramped. If you want to shop locally, go to Comic Kings or Kaboom. Tower of Games seems great, too, with a large play area, altho Ive only been there twice. Dont waste your money overspending at Fantasy Escape...!!
I have been in this store with my 4 year old daughter...never told she wasnt allowed...I didnt not allow her to touch anything that I did not plan to purchase.
Owner made me unwelcome for using restroom, is very uptight, condisending when I asked about rare cards. he may as well have called me an idiot for not knowing as much as him about the cards. NEVER GO TO THIS STORE WHEN THE OLD FARR IS THERE
Prices are high and selection is limited to only popular cards. No dollar rares or anything.
Great selection and very friendly
Always friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Didnt seem to want my business
Great selection of magic cards. Little on the expensive side.
Great Experience, Awesome selection, Very Friendly.
Great place!
I used to spend a lot of time in this store in my youth. It has really lost its appeal and no longer caters to its customers. At this point the store is just a collection for its owners, who sell most of their product online and therefore do not feel the need to cater to the local community.
Selection
Good card shop
Ok place
Deceptively small, there is a TON of stuff in this shop!
Prices are all jacked up
Not a good place to be
