Salsa with Silvia is THE PLACE TO BE. Whether you’re looking to improve your dancing, rent their beautiful studio for your private event, or bring your kids for an experience. You will leave feeling satisfied and happy that you took the step to come in. There is a reason this studio is the #1 Latin Dance studio in the DMV. You can feel the love that was put into the studio from starting out in just a basement to two studios! The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The teachers are patient, understanding, and energetic. The adult dance classes are always so much fun and filled with great material you can take with you. They even allow videos to be taken so you can look back to review. And the owner Silvia, she is a boss lady. Very friendly, helpful, and fun. If you’re looking to have a great time with your friends, learn, teach your children dance, or have a private event, come here & don’t waste your time calling other studios!
Took a private salsa lesson for 2 and it was AMAZING! Joffre was so kind and knowledgeable that he made learning to dance easy! Perfect for if youre looking to try something new or for a date night!
Took my 2 year old to the babies dance class and the teacher was great. Very good with little ones and my daughter took to her immediately. The class was empty just 2 little ones including mine... but she still managed to fill the time and make it fun. Everything was very clean and location is nice if you want to make a day of it. My only complaint is the time; my daughter has to skip a nap to attend. She was super cranky so I don’t think we’ll be back until a different time slot is available or she no longer needs her afternoon nap. A class between 9&12 or at 5 would be cool.
I have been taking classes at Salsa with Silvia for about 6 months now and Im nothing but grateful for everything this studio has brought me! When I started I was recently out of college, new to DC, had zero dance background, and was nervous to be putting myself out there. But there was no need to be nervous because everyone at the studio provided such a welcoming, comforting, safe environment for me to learn and explore my new love for dancing.Ive taken classes with multiple different instructors at SWS and have truly enjoyed them all! I tend to go to Joffres classes multiple times per week and absolutely love them. He and his assistant, Keelin, provide such a fun, safe environment for everyone to learn and challenge themselves. I always feel welcomed in their space and am so thankful for all of the great experiences that they and everyone at SWS have given me. Cant wait to keep learning new moves, making new friends, and connecting with the salsa community through SWS :)
I joined Salsa with Silvia in its Georgia Avenue location in January of 2018. During the first 5-6 months of 2018, I was at the studio pretty much every weeknight and all day on Saturday. The studio offers an unlimited-class plan, and you bet I signed up for that and took full advantage of it. My plan of taking as many classes as possible in a short amount of time to improve my dancing skills fast was one of the reasons why I was at the studio all the time when I first joined. The other reason was the people I found there – and they are the reason I keep going to this day.Incredible human beings have worked at SWS over the years, who have helped me feel comfortable as I engaged in a new and at times challenging activity. Among the front-office people, I must give a shout out to Gary. For a long time, he was the face of SWS for me, the person I reached out to if I needed anything. I miss you at the Georgia Avenue location! Among the instructors, I’m sorry for picking favorites (all instructors are great in their own way), but Joffre has always been my guy. Not only is Joffre a very good dancer, but he is also an excellent instructor. He knows how to break down and explain the moves (including teaching how to respect personal space and make sure nobody gets hurt while executing moves); he meets the students where they are (skill-wise) so nobody feels discouraged nor bored; and he tries to make sure everyone is having fun as they work on their dance skills. I felt challenged in Joffre’s classes, but also reassured whenever things got difficult and potentially frustrating. He has certainly helped me become a better dancer and I am grateful for that! Finally, SWS is the place where I found a safe, fun, open community and made very good friends.SWS has become a part of my life, a place I associate with happy things!
Salsa with Silvia is more than a dance studio. Lots of magic happens there. You’ve got all the basics- amazing instructors, good variety of classes in style and level, a professional business, and a safe and reliable environment. In addition, you learn how dancing is about much more than just moving your body. By joining the studio you enter a community, so you meet amazing people and make new friends. The owner Silvia is always engaged and she is always willing to help. I have been going to the studio for about 2 years now, and the instructor I have taken the most number of classes with is Joffre. I always had a thing for salsa, but he is the one who really made me love it. Joffre is technically very competent, and he is also a great teacher (which is not always a given). He is also a warm and genuine person, who is very open to feedback. And as a bonus, he has the best taste in music, I learned the best songs/ artists I know from him. In short, if you are interested in entering the world of latin dancing, SWS is the place for you!
I am a former student of Mario, Joffre, and Cats classes, and Joffres current dance partner and assistant of 2 years now. The Salsa with Silvia studio has been my home for 2 years, as it has been home to many others. Particularly considering the global pandemic that we have collectively gone through, I think that one of the greatest lessons the last year has taught us is that we are social beings, and we need community, which is what the studio has brought to everyone that has walked through the doors.I have spent majority of my weeks over the last 2 years at this studio - truly nonstop - and I have never felt anything other than respect, care, and professionalism from Silvia as a studio owner and Joffre as an instructor and partner. His classes and teams are a joyful, fun, safe space, where I, among others have learned and laughed together. I have continuously heard from people how Joffres classes and practices are the highlights of their days (and mine as well). Through a global pandemic and beyond it, Joffre has been a constant for his classes and teams, always respectful and responsible, cultivating a safe space for people to come, from wherever someones day is bringing them, and be their authentic selves. This has created nothing but a community filled with honest, kind, caring people, that I have encountered. This has been my continuous experience with SWS over the last 2 years. The bottom line is: Silvia, Joffre, and the entire SWS community is a wonderful place to be, and I truly encourage you to come and see and feel it for yourself.- Keelin
Finally after some time, I feel ready to write this review. I took Silvias salsa teacher training course back in 2019 with an excitement to take my dancing to the next level. I have been dancing salsa since 2014 and I wasnt sure if I wanted to actually take the next leap and teach yet, but I was curious to start building a teacher foundation. After the experience however, I realized it was a mistake. And now, I cannot recommend this studio. The course itself I think was the first time Silvia and David were hosting it, it was extremely disorganized and not thought out. Some of the material was okay, but they threw so much at us in a short amount of time (7 weeks) and expected us to be experts by the end without any support.Silvia is also one of the coldest and most unsupportive people I have ever met. For the last class, she told us we were having a test. I remember the week before I asked her who we would be teaching and how I should prepare, she did not give me very much information. When I walked in the week, I expected we would be teaching the other trainees like we were the 6 weeks prior. Nope. She threw actual student volunteers at us without informing us or letting us prepare. For me, it was very nerve-racking. She placed me to go last and by the time it was my turn, there were more students in my class than the trainees before me, which made the experience even worse. During our feedback session at the end, with both her and David, Silvia looked me cold in the face and told me I was too insecure to be a teacher. Mind you, I paid a lot of $$$ to take this teacher training, just to be torn down as a dancer.I suggest Silvia does NOT host a teacher training again. Also, there is a lot of great dancing in DC. While you can learn some great foundations here and some of the teachers are wonderful, I do suggest looking elsewhere to become an advanced dancer.
An amazing date night idea! Our instructor, Mario, was great! He was very funny & made everyone feel comfortable. The studio itself was extremely clean! If we actually lived in the area we most likely would sign up for more lessons!
The staff is awesome, friendly, helpful and super professional. The instructors are fun, energetic and exercised patience with students. I’m a member for life.
I’ve rented from Salsa with Sylvia before and the first time I rented, i didn’t love the customer service. Everything felt rushed and there was little communication. This time I rented a around, I was coming from out of town and came to the studio and the experience was completely different because of Whitney Smith (studio assistant/front desk associate) who was AMAZING! She welcomed my group and I, asked us if we needed everything and did our best to help us with the time issue that was made when we booked the studio. She cleaned the studio up and down before and after and made sure our group didn’t leave anything when we left. If Whitney continues working with Salsa with Sylvia (DC location), I will continue to book and recommend to others! The 4 is because of my first experience being a 3 averaged with this time being a 5.
Too good instructor. Very friendly and polite with everyone. Very skilled and professional person.
My girlfriend and I got an incredible salsa lesson remotely over zoom! Mario was an excellent instructor - he brought the energy and the expertise which made learning to dance fun. I highly recommend Salsa with Silvia for anyone, anywhere!
My experience with this venue was nothing short than AMAZING Cherelle was on top of everything making it super easy texts late at night and always responded she made sure I had all that I needed and all questions was answered then there was Whitney she showed up to show me the venue she was amazing showed me everything gave me so many options she made sure I was happy she came early to open the doors and was available the whole event helpful with everything I would highly recommend this venue to any and everyone price worth paying and will be the only venue I use going forward
Ive been taking classes here for years. Its a great studio space with classes and team instruction up to the intermediate levels in salsa and bachata. The size of the dance floors are a little smaller than what you see in VA or MD, but there are two dance spaces with simultaneous classes going on. Its probably the best studio space within DC that I know of.The instructors are exceptional and theres usually lots of beginners and intermediate folks in the classes. People are really friendly and I think its less intimidating for beginners. I think one of the best things about this place is that theres a real salsa community thats been built around it and Ive made lots of friends by being a part. I have a huge crew to go out social dancing that came about in no small part to this studio. The pricing is very competitive, especially if you sign up for an unlimited subscription. Theres usually plenty of parking around the studio as well, so its pretty convenient to get to. My only warning is that the area is a bit sketchy at night so make sure you dont have anything in your car in sight. Otherwise, I recommend this studio to basically anybody who asks me about learning salsa.
The online class with Mario on Sundays is so much fun and great to get some exercise in at home! I’ll be coming back for sure. ☺️
Man, hands down the best place to best your salsa and bachata dancing skills. Instructors are awesome and the staff is super cool. The monthly parties and events are off the chain, best value for money all around.
I danced Casino de Rueda salsa for about a decade and stopped for a few years. A friend recommended Salsa with Silvia when I mentioned wanting to get back into it, and I did a trial beginners class to check it out. When class ended, I went to the desk and signed up for a pass and stayed for the bachata class that followed my salsa class. I loved it that much. Plus, everyone was so warm, welcoming, and friendly!
I have so many good things to say about this studio. My friend recommended it to me and as a newbie in the salsa scene I was so nervous about what to expect. I am so happy I decided to take classes here. The membership is affordable, the instructors are great, the classes are well structured and the community is so amazing. Everyone is very helpful. The studio is beautiful, the number of students per class is good, which I think it helps the instructors to be able to correct you if you are doing something wrong. They have a social party every month which is GREAT! My first class was the Absolute Beginner Class with Joffre, who is an awesome teacher, also recommended by my friend. He made sure we understood every fundamental step we needed, was very helpful and made the class so fun. Every class I took after was just such an enriching experience. I am confident now with my salsa skills and can have fun social dancing. I wish I had started before.Thank you SWS!!
Thanks Mario for your great lessons.
Have had three different teachers for beginner salsa classes thus far and all of them have been great. The facility is clean and spacious, the front desk folks are accommodating, and I’ve left wanting to go back every time. Definitely recommend signing up if you’re a beginner!
Awesome place for our daughters summer camp!
Awesome studio. 8 weeks ago i had to two left feet but Instructor Mario straighten me up. My lady is happ and proud of me. A++ and lots of fun!
Great place to dance and meet other people in the dance community! Love my experience at SWS. The studio feels like a second family. The teachers really get to know you and help you on your journey as well.
Ive been taking lessons from Silvia for years! Shes awesome, her instructors are awesome and I have been so happy to learn all of their cool moves. The prices are reasonable and the variety of dates and availability make it easier for a single mom like me to get my practice in. I am a SWSer as long as they will have me!
Hi,I would like to say that overall my experience at SWS, was absolutely great. From the moment you enter people are really helpful and give you guidance on when or what level you should start. I took the absolute beginner class, and it was just the best, the instructor (Joffre) was great, very patient and ready to help. His class was really fun, which made the whole experience a great way to start for me. After that I just kept taking classes with almost all the instructors. Kelly, Mario, David, Camille each of them had their unique way to teach, very professional and very helpful. I wish they had more advanced classes but I totally recommend this studio if you are new to the salsa and bachata dancing scene and want a good first experience
My daughter is really enjoying her jazz and tap class at Salsa with Silvia. As a parent it’s lovely to have a dance studio in the neighborhood and to see so many Petworth families here.
Great salsa studio - friendly and attentive staff, instructor gave one-on-one attention during group class. highly recommend. will be back
My daughter and her friend took a single private salsa lesson before heading on vacation to Puerto Rico. The instructor covered all the salsa basics and the girls had a great time dancing in Old San Juan. Thank you for squeezing them in on such short notice. The location, studio, billing, and instruction were all wonderful.
My daughter has taken kids classes here for over a year and we love it. The teachers are great and Silvia always plans fun holiday events and recitals at the end of each semester.
I love the environment, the instructor is so wonderful and stern. For a first time starting here I am very pleased
My children both take classes at Salsa with Silvia, and we love it! Great value, friendly teachers, and a warm community environment.
Best school to learn salsa. The teachers and students are the tops.
My daughter has done the spring break camp and a weekly class. Both have been terrific.
Every teacher is fun and engaging. They can get you to have fun with learning the dances, even when your nervous!
We came here for the Valentines Day class. Man did the time fly by. If youre going just for the wine and cheese, its not worth it, but if you want an upbeat atmosphere and a very friendly dance instructor, this is a place to be. It was very crowded, but they are moving or have moved to a new studio that is supposed to be much larger.
Wonderful place for kids
Being new to the Washington, DC area, I was scouting around for a place where I can take Salsa Dance classes. Learning to dance salsa has been a great passion of mine for sometime. I was fortunate to come acrosss Salsa with Silvia while surfing the internet. I have taken the beginner one hour (7-week) Saturday classes and must say that it has been most enjoyable and satisfying. However, I do think that the classes are fast paced at times, but nontheless...fun. I have just purchased a VIP card and look forward to continuing to attend classes and learn Salsa with the great folks at Salsa with Silvia.
They are the best en D.C.....thanks now im learning little bit bachata....
Friendly place with good instructors and a variety of classes and special events.
Fun class where you actually learn!!
Great place and great teachers
I am the stiffest person in the world XD it would be a challenge to make me dance well
Beautiful place
The best place to learn to dance 💃
