Love their donuts!! We grab a few several times a year. Have tried most kinds available, and have yet to find one we dont like.An always favorite is the cookie monster. Glazed donut with frosting and oreos. I like ALL the cake donuts. Moist and delicious, even on the 3rd day.Staff is always gracious, welcoming, quick with order. Sometimes you can watch the donuts being made through the little window by the counter.I want to guess they have 30 different kinds to choose from. That may even be low. Besides glazed and cake, they have cinnamon rolls, long johns, fritters, and more.Price is $1.50-$2.50 per donuts, or you get a price break for ordering 6, 12, 18, etc.Our mixed half dozen was $12.50.The reason they didnt get 5 stars? Its messy on the tables most the time, and the door, floor, etc could usually use some attention when we visit. Doesnt make the donuts taste any less divine though!
Who goes to the gym then drives to a delectable donut shop? I do—yea those COVID pounds can wait—Hurts is beckoning me to try a rich and flavorful heaping mound of deliciousness! As you walk in and stare at the glass you cannot help, but want to try each one — but what stops you is the mounting tab — for a taste of goodness. Well, I checked myself and got a few delights—I’m in heaven—-hmmm—mmmm!—back at hurts again to restock with more goodness!
Real good donuts and good location. Not clear on the hours anymore, I’ve gone their many times expecting 24 hours and it’s been closed. I always get gluten free donuts, and would love to see more variety in the gluten free case at some point. I would love a gf raised glazed donut some day. They are friendly and clean every time, and you can watch them from the glass windows. Love this place
Mindblowing donuts with a whole lot of style. You cant go wrong with any of their donuts, so I like ordering a box of random dozen donuts and then I get to sample as many as possible with friends. Ive gone to Hurts Donuts probably 20 times over the years, its my absolute go-to for bad days, sweet-tooth days, birthdays, etc!
Apple fritters are too inconsistent. They are either delicious, overcooked or somewhere in between. I just cant deal with it any longer - especially given theyre about $5 each now. I will be taking my business to Donut Hut which pains me due to the proximity of Hurts Donut and when theyre good theyre really good. Donut Hut is consistent and has a really nice owner too.
Selection, selection, selection...what a beautiful thing! Not only was my mouth watering but my eyes were having a hard time deciding what to focus on. Each new offering I saw was better than the last! I decided on the German chocolate, maple bacon, and cinnamon roll. The German chocolate - a moist chocolate cake donut with a velvety chocolate glaze and beautiful dollop of coconut pecan frosting right in the center. Its like a GC birthday cake for one. I almost didnt want to bite into it, as it was so very, very pretty that I didnt want to spoil its beauty. But I did...am Im not sorry...because my tummy is soooooo happy! The perfect chocolate fix, with a lovely added texture. The maple bacon - theres only one way to describe it: COVERED...because it is covered in bacon. If it wasnt defined as a maple bacon donut, then you may not even know that the glaze exists...because it is COVERED in bacon. It was the first bite I took, and the first donut I finished in its entirety. Need I say more?Lastly, and most notably, the head-sized cinnamon role. And, as large as they are while naked, on display in the case, they really come into their own once theyre piled with that phenomenal frosting. I was thrilled to learn that they arent dry for being so big (my biggest complaint elsewhere) and contain the absolute perfect amount of cinnamon. Unraveling each bit, while adding meticulous dabs of frosting is truly an experience. Its one that I hope lasts forever...or, at least, until tomorrow morning, although I have my doubts.
Lots of unique donut options. Enjoyed the dipped caramel apple, German chocolate, red velvet, and strawberry filled. The ginormus cinnamon rolls will be for our next trip. They looked delicious.
Some of the most amazing donuts we have had. The sheer variety of donuts will take you a minute to decide as you would want more than one. The cinnamon rolls are the size of your hand and my favorite is the birthday cake donut which tastes like eggnog.
One of the best glazed donuts Ive ever had! Soft, tasty heaven.
This place has a really cool vibe, and I wanted to love it. The decor is fun, and you get to watch donuts being made while you wait in line. And there probably will be a line. I went on a Saturday night and waited for maybe 10 or 15 minutes. Ive heard it can get worse. The choices for donut flavors are seemingly endless. Two giant cases full of options, most of which have fun names like Homer Simpson or Cookie Monster or ET. And they look fun, too.Unfortunately for me, the donuts let me down when it comes to taste, where it really matters. The donut base was fine...not great but not bad. Pretty standard cake donuts and yeast donuts. But the ones with icing had way too much icing for my personal tastes and became cloying. And most of the donut flavors have icing.Id probably go back and just be super careful about what I select. Not ready to give up on this place yet. I want to like it for the name alone... Hurts Donut.
Their gourmet doughnuts are awesome. They usually have a wide selection to chose from and one would be hard pressed to not find something appealing to their taste. My only complaint is that they tend to be out of some of my familys favorite ones if we dont get there early.
It was good. Have a variety of donuts and some very creative ones. Nice place for hanging out and have donuts.
Amazing place must try 7 dollar shake and donut best deal hands down. This needs to be in Chicago
Really nice staff but been there several times, to include last night, & everything I order a glazed twist or fritter, my pastry is doughy raw in the inside. Cannot recommend consistency for those pastries from this facility. Other, regularly doughnuts, have been fine though.
Donuts are awesome but need to get there early in the day to get the ones you like, they sell out quick.
When theyre fresh, you cant beat theyre glazed donuts. Krispy Kreme used to be my favorite but hurts has taken that spot.
I’ve eaten A LOT of donuts in my life. And the apple pie donut from here was the BEST donut I have EVER… I mean EVER had!!! The donuts here are so beautiful and unique it was like heaven walking in here. They had so many unique creations such as almod joy, Oreo mint with Andes candy, Twix, Strawberry Cheesecake, Bubblegum, Peanut Butter Oreo, Bart Simpson, German Chocolate, and so much more! I got the recommendation from a local, and I’m SO glad! I am from Minneapolis, and there have been times where i’ve just wanted to make the drive to come back here. But of course, that would be crazy right? Well if you see me back there again, you’ll know what choice I made. Also super random, but the parking and location of the area…. PERFECT. Exceeded all my expectations!DONUTS 10/10VALUE 9/10ATMOSPHERE 9/10STAFF 7/10LOCATION & PARKING 10/10GOOD FOR PICTURES 10/10
Its been almost 3 years since Hurts Donut open the West Des Moines location, and Im so glad that its not as busy as it was when it first opened. Prices are quite a bit higher than other donut shops, but these are really fancy and large donuts, so the price is well justified. There are so many donuts to choose from, the hardest part about visiting Hurts is deciding on what to get. My favorite is the maple bacon bar. This salty and sweet donut is so uniquely American and probably the best representation of why we have an obesity crisis. Hurts also sell plenty of fluids to help wash down your donuts too. Now that the ridiculous crowded lines have gone away, I can confidently recommend Hurts as the best donut shop for the Des Moines area.
So so so good. We were in town for a show and ended up stopping into Hurts Donut both days of our stay. The donuts are beyond delicious, the staff is friendly and engaging, and the coffee was better than a popular nearby chains. I couldnt give a higher recommendation! We even brought home a dirty dozen to thank our babysitters and share with our kids.
This is a high end donut shop. Save some money and let them pick the donuts, lol.
AMAZING donuts, however the service is less than subpar. Today was my second time visiting this location, and again I was left disappointed by the customer service. Not sure if the employees just aren’t trained properly on customer service or if these certain ladies were having off days. Both times I’ve visited (within several months apart) I was not greeted at all when I came in, there was not a word spoken to me until I was checking out. Instead, the worker stood there and stared at me, not a word being spoken. Very uncomfortable and made me feel like I was being rushed. No “Let me know if you have any questions!” or “How are you today?” Just absolutely nothing. Not a thank you when we left. I’ll come back for the donuts but the employees really need to do better about greeting and making their customers feel wanted and welcomed. I felt like I was silently being judged while I picked my donuts, and I definitely felt rushed and that they just wanted me out of there.
We ordered the dozen this morning where they’re the most popular randomly picked ones. Me and my son DEVOURED them. We’d never had Hurts and it blows any other donut company out of the water that we’ve had to date. Doesn’t hurt that they’re also beautiful and creative!
If I had the money, Id open one of these in my city. This is a fantastically different donut shop. Forget glazed and cream filled long johns, try a captain crunch covered or maple bacon long johns. The donuts have fun names like, the Homer, that has pink frosting and sprinkles, and it looks just like the Simpsons. If you havent already, you really should make this a priority. Worth it.
Ok, so I was told by some friends that this was THE PLACE to get donuts! So we hit the west Glenn town centre and stopped in. The outside and inside was very well done and had a fun, youthful feel. They had ample seating, several coolers with a variety of drinks available, a fountain pop dispenser and while waiting in line you could look through windows into the kitchen and watch them make some of these strange donut creations. They staff at the counter were incredible proficient, yet fun and friendly. Though many of their donuts seemed to simply be different cereals sprinkled over a regular frosted donut, they had some very unique and outside of the box options as well. The staff were more than willing to answer questions and give suggestions to a hurts donut virgin like myself. I dont know if this would be my favorite donut place BUT it is certainly a lot of fun and I found several donuts I know Ill be stopping by again for! Youre only hurting yourself, if you dont make a stop at hurts donuts!
We just left there and it was our first visit to Hurts Donut. What a pleasant surprise to be greeted so early in the morning with a friendly, smiling face. Cant wait to go back!
You must try this place. It is a hidden treasure.
The vibes are immaculate, the donuts and cinnamon roll were just ok
When they’re fresh- these donuts are amazing! But sometimes I go in to get one and I can’t tell they weren’t made recently. Sometimes a hit or a miss on freshness which is disappointing because they are on the more expensive end of the spectrum. Love the variety that they have!
I dont get to come often because the nearest location is an hour away from us. I happened to be near one, so decided to pick up these treats for my family. The only one I chose for myself, I couldnt actually see what he was putting in the box. I got home and I was given the wrong donut:( and the one I got was very dry. The rest of my family enjoyed theirs and I like their variety and fun flavors. I was just disappointed.
Great donuts and wonderful staff (helped me carry 5 dozen to my truck)
Honestly one of the best donut places ever. Its unique, you will definitely find some strange combinations there but theyre all worth a try.
Donuts are excellent! A huge selection from which to choose.
Ordering through google adds $4 to the actual price of the dozen… which I think is quite an up charge considering I still went to pick it up. I mentioned that to the staff when picking up my order and she just laughed at me… not very professional.
Great variety! A fun stop for a morning treat!
I love going here. The donuts are always amazing and staff are very friendly. But be prepared to wait, there is always a line. Normally its quick and personally I think the donuts are well worth it. Most of the donuts are cake donuts so they tend to be a little bit drier and the frosting/toppings are always piled on. I recommend the donut shake. Its made of frosting, ice cream and whatever toppings are on the donut you chose. At first it seems pricey for a milkshake but if you really think about it you get the milkshake PLUS a donut. Also the peanut butter knots are my favorite though they tend to still be a little raw near the center.
Very cool atmosphere. Cinnamon bun is a must try.
I like to call it Hurts Pancreas. The donuts are delicious. But my pancreas says phgggrhgeeaftrgjdawgbjoofcj.
Amazing doughnuts!! A must stop.
Great doughnuts, friendly staff. Cant wait to go back!
Great donuts and staff.
The best donuts ever!!
Best donuts Ive eaten. Absolutely love this place.
Its been decades since Ive had a real donut. This place is worth the miles and wait! Why did I write this when Im back in Carroll? It was hard enough to not want to go back every morning! Probably the best reason to live in Des Moines!
Came in on a Thursday morning, the service was just meh felt rushed to pick donuts, and even then half of the donuts were raw and the other half stale. not worth the drive
They look so yummy - lots of variety. Pretty good. We got 8 different ones to try out.y favorite part was the doughnut itself. I wanted to like it more than I actually did. It was recommended to us by a local and seemed to be popular with the locals. Several people came and went in the short time we were there. Reminded me of a place in downtown Portland we went to once.
Loved ❤that I was able to get a dirty dozen for my crew at Pilot Travel Center 373, at 5 in the morning! The variety is phenomenal and service was exceptional.👍 A must go to for anyone whos tired of the same ol donuts. 🤙
Great taste and good price
Customer service stuck up and donuts put you in a diabetic coma. Workers condescending and rude. Go to HyVee nearby for donuts.
Best and most creative donuts ever.
Love it! Anything you can think of they have
Great place for something unique. I realize this place has been open for a while but this was my firt time stopping in ( I avoided it due to long lines which I suppose is a good sign). I stopped to get donuts for my daughters birthday. There were probably 30+ types of doughnuts from plain to very fancy. I got a dozen and asked the guy behind the counter to pick what he thought was good for a 3yr old girl. He got it spot on with lots of pink and purple, sprinkles and cereals and cotton candies. She loved it, great alternative to cupcakes.
The best donuts.
Stopped in traveling from the Quad Cities to Texas. Best donuts EVER!! Clean, fantastic service.
I am from Michigan and I was visiting my aunts place in West Des Moines. I went here and had the Nutella donuts. The dollop of Nutella in the middle did all the difference. The donut was soft and fluffy and I couldn’t stop it at one.
Great Donuts to eat hot that makes them good
Get drunk and have a donut after the bars close best donut shop ever!
It was accurate
The name is true but in a good way! The donuts are so good but too many can hurt. Very friendly staff and answered many questions. The pricing I thought was fair. Many selections to pick from as well as good drinks to chose. They have seating there or you can take your food and leave. Clean store and very well kept.
