The food, while not always pretty, was very tasty. I had the prime rib with corn pudding and mac and cheese. My wife had crab cakes and fried oysters with collard greens and sweet potato souffle. You can see the food in the pictures provided. The prime rib didnt look right to me but was perfectly cooked to medium rare. The fried oyster may have been fresh and was enjoyed. The crab cake was good as well, but should have been ordered broiled rather than fried. As for the sides, the corn pudding and sweet potato souffle were great. The mac and cheese was good. The collard greens were the only disappointment, as they were way too salty. The reason why Im going with four stars rather than 5 is due to the service. The waitress was very inattentive and slow. We waited a long time for the check at end as well. She also needed to be reminded of things throughout the night. The menu is expansive and we look forward to trying more of their food out.
I decided to try the new Hollywood Diner since the new owner has taken over. I had the prime rib and the wife had the pork chops. Both were okay but nothing special. my wifes mashed potatoes and gravy did not taste homemade. the corn pudding is wonderful and I would definitely go back just to get it! The llama and dumplings were good. The pecan cheesecake looked great but only tasted good and the coconut cake was average. The crab soup is good also. Our waitress was wonderful and was always handy for refills and very friendly. Im definitely going to go back and try the breakfast menu now though.
My home state, NJ is the capital for Diners. We expect a huge menu with everything available at anytime. We often expect a greasy menu, outdated seating space and the very familiar smell from the dated bathrooms. However the service and the food keep us coming back! While heading north I past several national and regional fast/quick food places looking to experience a local breakfast meal at a locally owned and operated establishment. My vehicle GPS took my request and directed me to the Hollywood Diner. Conveniently located on a State Rte near a College and a few miles from the Interstate.Familiar looking Diner building with all of the shine and plenty of parking. We were pleasantly greeted and promptly seated. Our server came over after a few minutes and seemed annoyed. Later we heard her mention she is as peachy as an apple pie.As usual we ordered separate meals with the intent of sharing. The pork roll was hand cut, thick and of the tangy variety not our favorite. The waffle was fine but our confusion was around the bacon. When ordering our server asked if we wanted the bacon crunchy or chewy. I said in the middle. It came out with a mix of crunchy and chewy pieces. Chewy was basically uncooked and probably not how anyone should eat bacon. The decor was pretty cool with 1950s hot rod inspired upholstered seating. The larger dining area offered abundant natural light from the windows and mirrors.
We usually come here for breakfast after church. Sometimes service is a little slow but the place is always packed and the food is always good. Their pancakes are really big and so good. I usually get the Western omelettes and my husband has gotten the Belgian waffle. Weve never been disappointed with the food. Weve only gone for lunch once and thats because we missed breakfast by about 30 minutes. I got meatloaf which was delicious and my husband got a club sandwich. Really good food and portion sizes for the cost! I would definitely recommend.
This dinner has some of the best food that we have ever eaten. We are so happy that Ronnie, the new owner took over and expanded the menu. The portions of the food they serve is fantastic. They have all different types of on the menu. and if you like soul food this is the best place in Dover. We highly recommend this diner. We went there for Thanksgiving and ordered their Thanksgiving feast and believe me, it was a delicious Feast. We have always loved southern food and we finally found the Best. Thanks Ronnie for bringing such wonderful food to Dover.
My daughter and I were excited to see Hollywood Diner reopen. We went today for brunch to find out that they stop serving breakfast at noon. How do you call it a diner if you dont serve breakfast all day? We both ordered the turkey bacon club on whole wheat. The kitchen was slow and both sandwiches came on white. The turkey is from the bird, which is good in theory, but it was very dry and all small pieces so impossible to eat on a stacked sandwich cut into quarters. It was also mostly dark meat, which is fine for some. The service was friendly when we were friendly first but didnt start out that way. On the plus side, the french fries were great! We always went for breakfast food, so I dont expect well go back. Also doesnt look like they have a liquor license.
Wow/!!!!! Who knew that a Diner could have such fantastic food? I sure didnt! Seafood at that. The clams, oysters, fish, corn cakes, crab soup, crab balls and Lima with dumplings. It was all great! The owner is a hands on guy. Gave us lots of samples without us asking so we could see how good it was before we ordered. Highly recommended!
This was my 1st visit to the Hollywood Southern grill diner. It was a mixed bag. The server smelled like an ash tray, and did not no simple answers such as how much the crab cakes way or how much the Queen or king cut of prime rib ways she indicated their size by holding up her fingers. I settled for the crab cake and fried shrimp platter. It was $18 and change. The 1st disappointment was that it was about a 3 oz crab cake. It had some back fin in it but it also had a fair amount of filler. The real disappointment was that it only came with 3 butterflied shrimp. Normally, when you get a combo, you get about 5 shrimp. So for the price, and the sizes, I dont think they matched up. The coleslaw was a very healthy portion, and the French fries were very average. So I will go back, but I will be more careful in selecting what I order. The sandwich menu looked like it was priced very reasonably.
Drawn the restaurant by its gleaming retro look. Ate the most fantastic hot turkey sandwich. Made with REAL turkey. Gravy was amazing. I thought my grandmother had returned to earth and was the cook. Even the applesauce was homemade. An UNBELIEVABLE meal. Cant wait to travel through Dover again.
Had an excellent lunch today. Best bowl of crab soup I have had in a long time, full of crab meat, thick and creamy, so good we had a second bowl. I also order a chicken salad sandwich omg it was so full. Lettuce was fresh tomato was not mushy. The French fries were delicious. Also make sure to order the fresh sweet tea. I asked the server if the salad was homemade she informed me everything is prepped and made there in the kitchen. I loved it. I will be returning. Thanks ladies for the good service also.
Service was friendly and timely. I ordered prime rib (medium rare) string beans, and fried cabbage. The rib was medium well but tasted good so I didnt say anything. Beans were good and the cabbage was really good but sweeter than cabbage should be. Maybe a touch of brown sugar? One of my wifes sides, sweet potato souffle, came out late but was really good; belonged in a pie crust. $38 for the two of us before the tip. If you want a southern style dining experience, I recommend giving this restaurant a try.
The food is really good, each time i have eaten here i was impressed. Im picky so its above average yet feels homemade. And the servers are helpful and patient. All said... a great dining experience.
Good food. The entree was delivered quickly but was 15 minutes later before the first side arrived and another 10 minutes for the second side. Also, flies had taken over. Just not worth the effort anymore. Third and last visit for me.
Aaron and staff always do a great job... food is always great n served hot... Myra is our favorite host always greats with a smile and takes great care of us... terrific home style cooking
Great tasting fish sandwich and shrimps made fresh. Good customer service, but bottled water, can sodas, or juices should be available for purchase.Heck, try producing and selling store brand bottled drinks. For example, SG sweet tea. Customers love your food...we will buy your drinks too!
Good, not great. I had a veggie omelette and happily ordered grits. They were tasteless and contained lumps. Husband had pancakes and scrapple that he very much enjoyed. Server told me it was the anniversary of her moms death, gee, good morning.
The chip beef was delicious, although it could of been hotter. Ate at Holiday diner several times since new owners and I have not had a bad meal yet. Love the southern flair.
Went twice once for breakfast and again for dinner. Totally different experiences. The breakfast and service was very good. The dinner experience was not good at all. Was seated right away but took over 10 minutes to be seen by the waitress. When she did show up it took another 10 minutes to get a glass of water. A refill was difficult to get. The meal came with a salad which took forever to get. The main. course did not come out all together and was not what I ordered. Was given a twice baked potato when I ordered a regular baked potato, which was over cooked. The kicker is the owners brother asked me how everything was and I said the food was good but the service was lacking. His reply was perhaps you should come and show us how to do it. I was being honest and did not expect sarcasm.I stopped going to the Hollywood diner under the old owner because of the quality of the food and service. I may not go back to the new owner either. I think the Capital Diner is much better. Ive been going there for a couple years and never had a bad experience.
I ordered the crab cake fried chicken combo. The crab cake was excellent but the chicken looked baked. There were 2 very small dry drum sticks. I asked 4 a replacement. I received 2 more drum sticks that looked worse. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The restaurant was very clean.
Went here looking to try the local eats now that we live in the area and this place looked like a diner from back home. That’s the only positive I have to say about this place, first impressions are everything and this place didn’t even try to give us one. The minute we enter we are greeted with the most uninterested host/manager. Dude just beckoned us to follow without a single word and just put menus on a table and walked away. Not a very glorified job, so I didn’t pay it much mind. Well I wish we had gotten ANY attention from there but we didn’t, we sat there for a good 10 minutes without even a waitress acknowledging our existence. The place wasn’t busy at all and actually looked a little slow to other areas nearby. After trying to flag down anyone, we just ended up getting up and leaving. On our way out we didn’t even get a sideway glance, just a faint “Have a good one” from the host. Guess this place doesn’t want a lot of business, so we’ll just give another diner our money.
I had Their Pork Chops Grilled Chicken and Ribs and they were really really good! THEIR Deserts are scrumptious as well as their Home Made Rolls! Also Great Prices with NICE PORTIONS! ***** Five Stars
The first time I visited the Dover Location I wasnt to happy with the server. We sat at a table and waited 15 minutes and then I had to get a server myself to place our orders. Once I received my food the Food was great but I think Ill just keep going to the Ellendale location. But Ill give the Dover Location 3 stars to be nice. ;)
Good soul food. Really needed a soul food restaurant in the area. Customer service is good. Very clean. Going back soon. Good prices.
First visit 2 weeks ago was great. It was a Saturday morning and they were busy but the staff handled it well. We were out in 30 minutes maybe. Today (a Thursday morning) didnt go well at all! Waited 10minutes to order. Then waited 30 minutes for our food. On top of that once I finally got my order of pancakes they werent fully cooked! Yuck. Got my order compensated though and only ate the bacon. I wont be going back for a while.
I called the restaurant at 10:30 on New Years day to see if they were serving muskrat. I was told yes but not until 11:30. My wife and I drove there from down south and waited at the register for over 5 minutes to be seated even though we were the only ones waiting and there were open tables. The waitress finally took our order and when I ordered the muskrat, she said she would have to check with the kitchen to see if it was available. She came back and said they did not have any muskrat to serve. I was planning to try muskrat for the first time and thought New Years Day would be a great day to try it and maybe start a new tradition (if I liked it). I was very disappointed and we left without ordering anything else. We use to eat regularly at the Hollywood Diner during the previous ownership and hadnt been back since the current owner took over. I guess I will have to find another place to try muskrat and continue eating at the other restaurants we usually go to.
Chicken dumplings were amazing. Menu is so diverse theres something for everyone. Had lemon meringue pie for dessert. Wonderful.I miss Kirby & Hollaways restaurant but this is even better. And the staff/waitress was really nice and attentive. I never write reviews but had to for this restaurant.
Ate there yesterday. It was full but we waited less than 5 minutes. Food was excellent. I recommend the sweet potato fluff and the fried cabbage. The crab cake was tasty but I’m not sure it was made with blue crab. The wait staff were pleasant and responsive and very busy. Desserts were outstanding. Two of us got the coconut cake which was fresh and moist.
First time there, food is fine and service wonderful. Only drawback is if a large group 5 or more takes longer to be seated than other placesGroups pushing over 6 or 7 probably not sitting together. Food selection good.
First time being here since the change. I enjoyed sausage gravy with biscuits and an order of eggs. All good. I have to say I appreciate the level of salt in food. They allow you to add if needed. While I know the taste of food is different, it is very health conscious. Thank you. Plus the place seemed clean.
My wife & I had visited her family a week ago & her AWESOME friends Debbie & Rob had taken us to a diner in Dover, Delaware. on a Thursday night. This place brought back the greatest days in my life & the food was TOTALLY great & yes; I highly recommend this place to anyone when visiting down in Dover, Delaware & the owners totally greet all the customers & asks on hows everything & if something isnt right or out of place. They themselves will sit down with you like a real family & fix the issue there on the spot. The waitresses or waiters are very pleasant & they make you feel like a real family..... Thats why Im giving them a ( 5 ) star 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 for a family owned restaurant food & service....PLEASE NOTE:Im using a ( 1 to 5 ) Star rating scale & a 1 ( 🌟 ) is considered the lowest score & I would never even bother with that establishment @ all. A ( 5 ) 🌟 rating is the best & Im from the Food Critics from the Northeastern area of the New England States.Sincerely,Mr. Russ & Mrs. Kim MacDonald
While in the Dover area we stopped for a bite to eat. I had been here years ago and thought that the food was good so we tried it out again. We were not disappointed. They have very good breakfasts.
Very good breakfast. French toast was awesome! Our server was great. We did not have to search for her to get a refill on drinks, napkins or anything else!
This was my first time since the got a new owner. I had me some grits eggs sausage, bacon, and toast. It was very delicious. I dont eat just anyones grits. The cook at this dinner has my heart for life. I thought I was I heaven.Thank you for the delicious breakfast this morning.
The food was awesome. The staff was awesome. So here I am 2 weeks later to visit my brother and was so looking forward to eating here only to find it has closed 😞
Easily the best restaurant experience I’ve ever had. The staff is refreshingly friendly and welcoming, and not greedy like many other restaurant staff. I am so glad that I chose to eat here for my NYE dinner; everything, especially the food, was incredible.
We came in and sat at the counter area. We waited 7 minutes and watched 4 other groups get seated and silverware and drinks. Not one word to us. There were at all times at least 2 servers and the busboy and manager within 5 feet of us and never a word. Guess we werent locals. We left the restaurant.
Great breakfast food for Dover, but the coffee situation needs figured out. Seemed a bit weak to me and the waitress said someone the other day said it was too strong. I dont know if they overcompensated, but a good breakfast requires good coffee. Service was great, no other issues.
Good Breakfast. GREAT DINNER/LUNCH menu. A proper diner. Cant wait to go back and try more of the afternoon menu items
The food here is amazing. The price is great. The staff was awesome. There was so much food I couldnt eat it all. And the desert selection omg scrumptious!
They serve great food, and have a huge menu to pick from. The staff are friendly and the seating is comfortable. One of the nicer, quieter, sit-down places in Dover.
The food and the service was great! And the atmosphere was that kind of atmosphere where you felt at home. So, it was a home cooked meal in a homey restaurant! YOU JUST GOTTA GO AND SEE!!!!
Food is very good, and the staff is very efficient. Their prices are extremely reasonable for what you receive on your plate. Most importantly it seems like the staff are happy to be at work and it shows through in their end product. We will dining here again.
This is not actually diner food, much more upscale. The cream of crab soup was good. They did not have some of the listed specials, even thought we were eating at 4:15. Large portions.
We were not impressed upon our entrance - place and people looked a bit disheveled. But everyone was polite and welcoming- I had what could he the best club sandwich of my life. Real turkey - not cold cuts.Being from out of town, we took a chance, and glad we did.
Had the stuffed pork loin. It was delicious. Fried cabbage and limas with dumplings....reasonably priced. Good service. Friendly atmosphere.
Delicious!!! Great service and prices!! The seafood was amazing! You dont want to miss this jewel! They go above and beyond on service and food!
Very nice and clean. better that had expected. prompt service, good food, and nice atmosphere. a very cool retro diner that delivered on the experience.
A++ words dont express how much I enjoyed my food and visit staff is like a family owner is a great person who won my autistic 8 yr old a whale from the grab machine and my son loved the atmosphere we will return. Thanks so much for great service highly recommended.
Management is very rude. I used to go almost daily but owners brother was very obnoxious and now refuses to greet or wait on me at all . I realized why spend my money here . It cost nothing to speak. I wont recommend because of egregious behavior.
Good was okay but server had an attitude toward my transgender friend. She served me with a smile but was gruff and short in her service to my friend. Will not go back. The Two starts are for the food
Wonderful staff and the food was delicious. I really liked the sweet potato souffle. Much love from Texas!
The experience was not very good. I went there about 20 years ago and it was awesome. Went there today and the server was awful. She had a terrible attitude to even throwing up her hands when asked about when we could get our bill. The food took 30 minutes to get our food from 3 people, when it came; out it was subpar because she forgot some of our food, and it was also told. Overall I wouldnt recommend this place.
Cream of crab soup is delicious! Pie was yummy. Everything else was mediocre. Imitation cheese. Imitation dressing. Nice place to hang out with the girls .
Been going here since 1983. New management has accomplished a superior job in remodeling, food, service. Definitely recommend and will return.
First time since change in ownership. Place was busy, which is great for bottom line, but not efficient. Hostess was assisting with table orders, which meant when a table was finally open for us, the buser sat a party that came in after us. The hostess apologized and we eventually got a table. We were disappointed to find out that they no longer serve breakfast all day. We were made aware of this prior to getting a table; however this was not the same for others as we noticed no less than 4 tables sit to leave again. Waitress acknowledged us on the way to another table. The waitress brought over 1/2 hour drink order, saying she had fresh sweet tea brewing. While I can appreciate fresh tea, an alternate option, while tea was brewing would have been appreciated. Being picky about bacon, I can say they got my request correct. While the staff was nice, the food was ok, Im not sure the chaos that is everything else will bring us back in.
Delish breakfast. Best french toast Ive had at a restaurant. Bacon cooked perfectly.
Such a wonderful place. Staff is always so friendly. Great food, too!
The waitress didnt bother to write anything down, which of course made her forget some of the order. My father ordered eggs and she forgot the toast, I ordered a sandwich and she looked at me like she never heard of it before. Just a horrible experience. Probably wont go back. Plus theyre quick to throw the check at you as soon as you get the food. Surprised they didnt bring the food in take home containers, felt very rushed.
Went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Service, food and value were excellent. Will definitely stop in again when in the area.
I have not visited the new place. I loved it when it was Hollywood Diner. This was my go-to brunch location. The customer service was excellent. They also serve alcoholic beverages.
Absolutely the best French toast and breakfast special. Cream Crab soup was amazing 🤤
We had 3 different wraps which were all perfect, stuffed and delicious. the pancakes are thick and tasty, the eggs were a little over cooked but I definitely would go back. I read the other reviews so maybe they did get a new cook. although there was a long hair on top of my wrap but not cooked in it. I just discarded it and ate the wrap. If it has been a restaurant and not a diner I definitely would have complained but everything else was good so...
The server had a poor attitude when placing an order and offered no suggestions when swapping out one side for another. The atmosphere was dingy and dull, also smelling strongly of cigarette smoke to the point our asthmatic daughter had to leave the restaurant. ( You cannot smoke in there so this was old cigarette smell ) There where pictures ripped from the walls and the restaurant seemed unkept and dirty, myself and my husband both noted how gross the floor and neighboring tables where. The food was not much better than the service and atmosphere, the Lima beans and dumplings where so sugary it was almost completely inedible. The main dish we ordered ( chicken salad ) was again so sugary it was inedible to my husband and myself ( we ordered the same thing ) to the point we could not finish our meals. After leaving we both became so violently ill we had to make several stops along the short drive home. My husband ( who used to be a cook ) was reminded that adding massive amounts of sugar to a dish is also a way to prolong the shelf life of the item so that the unfortunate customer cannot tell if/when the food is spoiled. I did mention that it is southern style cooking and may be a product of such, but when you make chicken salad ( which I have never heard of adding sugar to ) is so disgustingly sweet, that goes beyond southern cooking and leans more towards hiding the fact the food has been made several days before and is way past its shelf life. Would NOT recommend going there to anyone.
Very disappointing...a waste of time and money.!!!! Shepard Pie served with a chunk of lumpy mashed potatoes, slathered with melted cheddar cheese on top?!! Filling looked like a mixture of browned ground beef and canned peas and carrots. Just when I thought it could get better the side of Collard Greens tasted bad...really bad. They took order of bill but I wouldnt go back or recommend. My rating a minus 1 star.
Good prices, good food. Breakfast should be ALL day but ends before lunch. Very happy SG took over the Hollywood!
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! This food was absolutely terrible! The mac & cheese was the consistency of paste and it looked & tasted like it as well! The strawberry cake was not moist and tasted like it had been sitting out for days. The greens and the chicken were nothing to write home about! If I could give this place ZERO stars, then I would!! This was a total waste of my $12 because most of it went straight into the trash!! Yuck!
Food and service was excellent. In fact over half of chicken and dumplings came home. Home made all the way..
I had recommended that several people I know come to Southern Grille in Dover since I loved the one in Ellendale. Although for most the food was great for all service horrible. I was with a part of eight and there was an hour wait between when the first and last person served and all orders the sides not served with the food. Another seperate party reported the same. Having great service is critical so Southern Grille please get it together. Will not recommend others go there until you do
Staff is polite and friendly. Very attentive to their customers. The food is good, nothing fancy just down home food.
Ordered the open faced hot roast beef sandwich and it came out with NO gravy??? Thick sliced extremely dry roast beef. The limas had no salt and the amount of pepper in them set my mouth on fire. The lady at the table next to us found plastic in her bowl of soup. Very disappointed...was really looking forward to this opening.
Southern Grill has excellent food & service. This was only my 2nd visit there and I met the owner tonight, he will go to the end of the earth to please everyone !!! Ill definitely be going back.
My boyfriend and I visit here about once a moth when we travel to Dover. Waitresses are always very nice and accommodating. Omelets are amazing!!!!The ladies restroom could defiantly use some work. It is very small. To get to the sink you have to close the door to the largest stall and hold it there with your foot so youre able to wash your hands. No matter what time of day we stop in, the restroom is always clean
The food was horrible. This is no longer a diner, even though theyve kept Hollywood Diner in the name. We were hoping that it would be just as good as before the new owners took over, but that is definitely not the case.
Had the fried chicken dinner. Nice clean place with a friendly wait staff.
I LOVE this place. The fact that I always see the owner in there busting his ass working just as hard, if not harder, than his employees, says a lot. The service is fast, the food is amazing, the proportions are huge, and the staff are very friendly.
American comfort food. Great service & atmosphere. The kids will love it.
My husband and I came to Dover for our 10th Anniversary and wanted to try a neat little place for breakfast, (I recommend just driving right by and finding somewhere else. ) The atmosphere was weird, couldnt put my finger on it, we got a table, ordered, food came, started eating and there was a long dark hair in my pancake, I did bring it to our servers attention and she immediately took it off our bill which was nice, and she was ok too, the eggs did not have a flavor and kind of tasted like they had been sitting, I did eat my ham though, that part was good. The young girl who checked us out seemed to have an attitude of not wanting to be there. We tried something new but unfortunately would not return when in the area.
Food was good has a ribeye steak with fried onions, candied yams and dressing. Rolls were fresh, hot, best rolls around town
I love this place. The food is awesome and the servers are kind and friendly. The only bad thing is that they no longer have the pulled pork dinner that is on their menu.
Good food and service at very reasonable prices.
Great food. Great fast service. Reasonable prices. Friendly atmosphere.
Food was great and we got our food without a long wait. Everyone is really pleasant
Awesome people. Great food. And reasonably priced
The food wasnt cooked well, the home fries were old and hard, the toast was stale and hard. Everything about this meal was unpleasant and I just threw it in the garbage. Now, I dont know if its a new cook because I have eaten from here a few times before and the food was good. The manager wasnt courteous at all.
I had never been in this dinner before, I will 100% be back. It was very busy, great food and waitresses. 👍👍
Nice friendly people work here. Food was good..
The best waffle Ive ever had, kudos to the chef and the server Joan was very good, efficient and friendly. Even though it was busy was seated right away.
Good food reasonably priced. Recommend this place try the pies
Service was fast. Food was excellent and you get a lot of food for the price.
Friendly waiter. Good food. Sadly my water glass had a long hair tangled in the ice. 😣
The service was horrible we waited for over 17 minutes for our waitress to even come to our table. Two other waitresses went and told her to tend her tables and she still didnt come. Finally came and we realized it was the waitress we saw outside on the phone. My food was very bland my other partys food was over cooked. Food was brought and didnt bring us silverware. Very dissatisfied I was looking forward to good soul food 😥😥
The place was perfect and food was out of this world!! Do not miss out on this enjoyment !!
Good food but not consistent
Good food. Homelike atmosphere. Good service and great prices.
