What a wonderful community treasure! Stopped in for lunch from their hot plates and salad bar. Wonderful selection of fresh, and delicious foods. Indoor seating is still unavailable due to Covid protocol, but everyone was super friendly, and there were some tables set-up outside to eat. Great food, great price, and a wonderful feeling that comes from supporting a local treasure.
I drove up from kansas City to visit family. My brother has always been sold on this place and i have likewise come to appreciate it. It comes across as a real midwestern business, not a pretentious hangout for granola people. they just have good food and and some new, creative products i have not seen elsewhere. This time I bought some Devils Advocate belgian style ale. From Church Street Brew in Itarca, IL. Believe it or not I have had some bad belgian style ale. This stuff was perfect. It had the delicate floral scents in the background, the winey character of belgian beer and hop flavor, but not too much. I believe it worked out to about a buck per pint. All i can say is, I will be going back when I visit Ames again. I found this beer up by the cashier.
Every time we travel through Iowa we stop here for raid snacks and a potty break. The staff are always friendly, the store is clean, and if I lived here, would shop here. Lots of organic, GF and healthy food items. Not pretentious like SOMMMEEE health food stores. Worth the trek off the highway.
Love checking their food counter, cheeses, and wine selection. I usually get blue corn chips and salsa here too.
Great selection and staff
Still love it. By the way I think its the only store you can buy wheat bran in now.
When businesses return to worrying about business rather than politics I’ll return to giving reviews based on the business rather than management’s poor political games. After wearing a face shield here, as they mandated, for A WHOLE YEAR, management gleefully informed me a year later that they changed their policy and that I had to wear a mask instead (this after being asked about the shield on at least one occasion prior). So disappointing... ironically, I was moving and that was my very last trip to this store. Mask mandates are bad enough (if you follow the actual science and the fact that they don’t stop virus sized particulates), but this sole encounter ruined my whole impression of this business.I liked the organic selection at this store. Unfortunately, that is not much reflected in this review due to management’s snarky behavior. I wish them well, but I also wouldn’t go here if you want our world to return to businesses that keep their politics to themselves.
A great place where you can get allergen -free food! They have lots of options while still feeling like a small town grocery. Staff are always friendly and happy to help.
This is a fun Hometown natural grocer! They have lots of organic produce and some interesting vegetables you cant find anywhere else. A nice bulk food section with the make your own Nut Butter machines. Lots of different probiotic drinks and a nice view counter too. Fun to poke around! They also have a co-op membership.
I love their gummy bears... when the have it. I went last Sunday and they did not. 😪 I really wanted some gummy bears. They are so good. I drove from Des Moines for these gummy bears. Seriously, they are that good. Driving over 30 mins just for gummy bears. 😅
Always a good selection of local foods and friendly helpful staff
I like shopping for organic foods and other products from there. Its small enough that I dont overwhelm but stocked enough that I can find most of what Im looking for.
This store is anti science, imagine not believing peer reviewed medical journals that refute emphatically the efficacy of mask wearing and demanding of their customers to wear a piece of paper that is literally 20x larger in micron hole size as compared to water vapor and virus size, but an impenetrable shield is not allowed. Imagine being that shamefully foolish, just imagine that, yikes.
Great . I found just what I was looking for.
A nice selection of high-quality, environmentally-conscious foods and other merchandise. Not inexpensive, but a membership in the co-op gives you a decent discount. Helps support local growers and producers. Staff is great!
Excellent selection of specialty, local and vegan food you cant find very easily elsewhere. Also natural cosmetics and cleaners. Great produce, fresh bread, vegan baked goods and local brews. Prices reasonable. So glad to have a store like this in Ames!
Shopping was quick and easy. Found what I was looking for and the checkout was fast. It was a pleasure shopping there for the Holiday meals.
Loved it. It was my first time being in the store and the prices are higher but its all organic
I travel the US and this is one of my favorite grocery stores. Lots of options for plant based eaters and a nice deli. Huge selection of local beers and wines.
My favorite job and my favorite place to eat in Ames.
Great selection of products and a nice atmosphere. Helpful staff. Great hot bar, salad bar, and coffees.
Fantastic groceries and to-go items. Great community resource.
Unique experience. Buy everything from freshly made smoothies to locally grown/ raised products. Health & environmentally conscious.
Amazing selection and super friendly employees! I can always find great vegan options there!
Great bread! Their crew is helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Beautiful environment.
Some of the items Ive got her have been hit and miss, but I kid you not, in the little baked goods container they hold the best dang scones I have EVER tasted. I adore the maple almond one. Yuuumm. I cant stand scones. Bleck. But these are divine they arent all dry and crusty like most scone. My mom got a seasonal pumpkin one and I hate PUMPKIN again, blech lol. But this was good. I stole most of moms. Im not nice when Im hungry lol. Some of the stuff is kind of pricy on a low income. But its okay.
Love the smell of this store!!! Choices are great, but so is membership!!!!
Great benefits for member owners. Im always happy with the selection of Iowa grown producers.
Confusing set up.
Love the variety of healthy food. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Can be pricey though.
Very nice selection of gluten and dairy free foods, along with great selection of organic, positive atmosphere, friendly staff
We do the majority of our grocery shopping here. They have lots of local options, as well as healthier alternatives to things. The bulk section is decent, excellent for dry basics such as coffee, pasta, and granola!
This is a great little whole foods store. I plan to stop in as frequently as possible. I am highly considering a membership here.
Wonderful people, food selection and quality
The best place in town if you’re looking for the healthiest and freshest food around. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the freshly made meals are always delicious!
Clean and organized, they were making fresh bread!!
My friend found everything she was looking for.
Wheatsfield is a welcoming and unique shopping experience. They have so many organic, vegan, fair trade, and just plain interesting items here. If youre looking for anything thats a little trendy and you havent been able to find it in another grocery store, its very likely that wheatsfield has at least some of it in stock. My favorite item is their agave gummy bears. Put them in the fridge! 🤤
I was searching for extra dark (>85%) chocolate as a gift. This place had it, and a wide selection at that. Apart from chocolate they have a fantastic selection of grains and cooking ingredients. The atmosphere is sort of worldly fair-trade. Would definitely recommend checking it out.
I like to go in, explain what I need and be able to have a kind, knowledgeable employee help me. Their buffet area/food service also looks great and very clean although Ive never eaten there.
All items are overpriced.
Great co-op with tons of vegan food and a lot of tasty vegan baked goods. Their tempeh salad (intermittently available) is amazing. For dessert, the oatmeal cream pies and ginger bars are some of my favorites.
I love Wheatsfield! For being a smaller store they have plenty of options! If youre mindful of what you consume this is a must stop! You can buy a membership, or simply shop!
Always a great selection of high quality food. Staff is always very helpful. I live over 30 minutes away and have a choice of at least 10 grocery stores closer; however, I always want to shop here when I come to Ames.
Its clean and organized. Prepared food is very appetizing.
Wheatsfield is a really good co-op (grocery store) with a ton of local, organic, and sustainable foods, household supplies, and health products. There are great vegetable, bulk grain, and alcohol selections. The meat department is tiny. Prices are as expected. The store was very recently expanded and remodeled. Theres a coffee shop/ restaurant now!
Clean coop grocery store.
Great variety! Organic produce is priced a bit high, but we all tend to expect that. Bulk items are very competitive! And the kombucha from Waukee may make the trip worth it alone! I will definitely be back!
Absolutely love the selection of organic food and health products. The atmosphere at Wheatsfield makes me feel at home. Everyone who works there is so kind and helpful. Plus, their new smoothie/juice/coffee bar is AMAZING! Highly recommend.
I always stop here when Im in town. They have an amazing bulk department.
Great local co-op! The employees are always nice and helpful. They have a great selection of local cheese as well.Once we got fresh fruits and veggies from them, weve never been able to go back to the regular grocery store. The grocery store fruits and veggies are bland tasting in comparison.
Peace Loving, Birkenstock wearing, patchouli smellin, granola munchin,Hippie Food! 😍Vegan and Vegetarian options are a lot of what they offer. Amazing salad bar, bakery and deli, spectacular organic produce, non-vegan meat counter and other eclectic items.
Great products, selection and most of all, the people.
Very disappointing visit today. Facemasks required. Im a member and an asthmatic. I couldnt breathe. Guess I cant shop here anymore. Ill take my money elsewhere!
Best grocery in the area! The freshest food I have seen by far and all locally sourced, organic and fair trade! A must
This is my natural store of choice in the Ames Area! Absolutely the BEST store for people with food allergies, food intolerance issues, people who want to eat Clean, Vegan, Paleo, Organic, etc. And their lunch buffet and deli are AMAZING!! Wheatsfield will help you live your best life!!
They have wheat gluten!
Closest place to Fort Dodge to get healthy food. Think Whole Foods but more local food from the surrounding farmers. It also seemed less expensive than Whole Foods.I was very happy to find this place. Fort Dodge has nothing like this to compare to.They have all sorts of organic meats and produce and a good selection of cheeses. The hot food selection could be better. Again, Im comparing to a bench mark. All in all it has much of the items that a selective eater would want.I will definitely be back shortly.
Wheatfield is an Ames staple. A little spendy, but if you want high quality groceries from local farms and ranches, it cant be beat. Additionally the bakery, deli, hot bar, etc makes for a good lunch or dinner venue.
Love the wholesome food, the free smells and the wonderful people working and shopping there. Also love the informative classes and answers to my questions when I shop!
Most amazing place 2 shop and work! Gotta love the different varieties of housemade salads and hummus!!!
A huge bulk section! Lots of vegan food, especially in the produce, deli, and frozen sections. Great place to grocery-shop! Check it out!
The best things about this store are hot bar with several soup types and the eating area, where we get together weakly for conversations. Sometimes they organize events with live music. Also there are various classes offered. Its a community place.
Curbside pickup available. Vegan scones.
Local organic food! Excellent! They have a delicious smooth/juice as well.
Always knowledgeable people to answer your questions or help you find something
I love seeing all of the local items at Wheatsfield. Today I got handmade soaps and locally brewed kombucha! I only wish I lived in Iowa to take not advantage of what they have to offer!
Absolutely my favorite place to pick up anything organic be it from food, detergents, body products, just about anything you can imagine that has a guaranteed organic label. Very clean since their food is so wonderful!
First trip to this business & I enjoyed the wide choice of products.
Small grocery store specializing in organic foods. The prices are extremely high, and the selection is limited, but if you like organic food this is the place to go. The store is community-owned, the staff are knowledgeable, and if you dont mind paying a little extra, this is a unique grocery store.
Was passing thru when I found this place. Was very happy and it reminded me of my local coop. If you want a snack, meal or bottle of wine, then this is the place for you. You will find this a familiar place if you have spent any time in any health food store. Ample parking as well.
I love this store! The employees are super friendly and helpful. If they dont have what youre looking for, theyll order it for you if they can. I dont shop anywhere else!!
Now this store Ive shopped in here maybe 4-5 times but excellent people works here... one guy that works here Andy in the meat dept very nice guy who also supported my church buying lunch for himself theyre all excellent people working here.
I love the co-op! Wish we had one just like it in the Des Moines area. Amazing selections, great deals for members, affordable membership pricing, and lots of cooking classes. I love the selection of vegan friendly food.
This is a grocery store specializing in organically grown produce, which makes it a little more expensive than a typical grocery store. They also carry many health-oriented and green items. Finally, they host numerous healthy-eating cooking classes, which are listed on their website.
Shop here often. Great selection of organic and whole foods, good selection of canned goods, great cheeses, and lots more. Pickett Fence cream! Love this place.
Great selection and service. Only been there a couple times but those left a good impression on me. Hope to get out here more often.
Great store!
One of the best coops I have been to in years. Great selection. I can always find what what I need. Great produce department!!!
Friendly atmosphere with the best products in town!
I like the Wheatsfield coop, but I cant really pin down the reason why. The prices are a bit higher than the Iowa City coop, but theyre reasonable for Ames. Their selection of produce is good. Their selection of canned and bagged foods are small, and their selection of frozen foods is tiny, and their alcohol section is a little overpowering but I like them. Its just something about the atmosphere and the behavior of the staff. Theyre friendly. So I like it.
Organic real food. Organic energy drinks. Organic Beer! Fresh food daily! Sushi prepared by a master! Many great lunch choices. Prices are really high. 6 bucks for a tuna sandwich is too much. 10 bucks for a whole chicken is ridiculous, but muh organics! Staff is always cool, its all worth it I suppose because its real food, not infused with garbage. Excellent real food in every isle. Worth the extra buck or two. Fresh salads and great vegetarian food. Real milk. Great coffee and pastry/morning snacks, made fresh. Sit down or carry out. Open til 9pm everyday. Check it out!
Generally pricey but a large selection of stuff you cant find at Hy-Vee or Walmart. Always nice to buy local when possible.
Very nice sice remodel. Great bulk foods section. Amazing selection of high quality health food throughout. Deli is expanded and delicious, though not for the faint of budget.
Wonderful alternative to big chain shopping. A whole range of healthy foods including frozen meets and fresh breads. A delis section is perfect for a quick lunch of savory food. Try it.
A great place. Free fruit for kids. Lots of samples for adults. Cheese selection is amazing. Bulk grains and beans as well.
Love the co-op, been a member for years. Cant get service or products that they have anywhere else in town! Great wine selection.
Very wheelchair accessible! The bathrooms even have automatic door buttons. The van accessible parking is in a great spot! #a11y
Superb selection of vegetarian and organic foods. Very nice deli. Bulk foods and snacks aplenty. Friendly service.
Love the hot bar, good food made from scratch. Good atmosphere. They are always bringing in new items. Nice staff.
A well-known and well-loved co-op featuring locally produced and organic foods. Super tasty offerings at their deli as well.
Normally I would give them a much better review however, if you ever order gift bags and leave it up to them to fill it with whatever they want...you can count on the people receiving items that dont sell very well as well as a couple popular items. The fruit is not edible...very bruised and damaged. Other items are things that dont seem to sell and it is a way to get rid of it. If you do a gift bag, you should know what you are sending to people...dont leave it up to them to throw in the garbage fruit and unwanted items.
Great selection of natural products, from beauty to food. You need it? They probably have it.
Im always happy to find myself in Ames and able to stop by this local gem. The co-op offers grocery items and fresh produce with locally-grown and raised veggies, meat, eggs, and dairy to name a few. The deli also offers hot and cold meals ready to go. The beer and wine selection isnt massive, but very complete.
Ames is a fun college town. The young people in this town are nice, energetic and fairly respectful. This store has a nice little selection. A little bit of everything.
This is my happy place
