Universal Cycles is fantastic, it’s been the best bike shop experience in a while and I’m glad to know it’s in my hood. Billy is an awesome bike mechanic and should have a show called “Pimp my Bike”. He took my old Schwinn Homegrown and made it a super fun again. This bike frame has been the only possession I have kept through moves from California to Texas and now to Oregon and it was in the best hands possible. I was really impressed with the care and creativity that went into the build (see photos). Saved me countless hours of watching videos and frustration doing the build on my back own 😃😃

My online bike shop is now my Local Bike Shop (LBS). I used to drive over the river to their East Burnside location but since they moved to Beaverton, I am only 10 minutes away by bike.I have bought a complete bike and multiple parts from Dusty and have had efficient service done by the legendary Billy. Each time I come in, I am treated like a regular.Give them a call and they will try to solve your issue over the phone. If you need to drop by, the store is spacious, safety protocols are in place, and there is always be someone ready to assist you.I disagree with others complaining about customer service. I have had stellar interactions with most of their staff and have never been upsold. Parts recommendations and service estimates are spot on. They are open fairly late, which is a plus for me. Happy to recommend Universal Cycles for all your online and in person cycling needs.

Love this place.Bought a new wheel set from vision recently (which I don’t believe is a manufacturer Universal carries) and needed to buy a spacer to fit my cassette. Immediately went to this shop, knowing I could easily find what I needed and have it in my hands the same day. I ordered the part online and brought my rear wheel with when I went to pick it up hoping they could transfer the cassette over for me. Eric, who helped me, was happy to do so after he went and pulled the spacer I’d ordered, but he found it didn’t fit. Turns out the spacer I already had was the right size, so he used that and got it on in no time without charging me for the part I’d bought or the service he had to do to get it right. My bike rolls great now and shifting might even be smoother than it was before. His care/competence saved me such a headache had I just had a spacer shipped to me and tried to do it myself or gone to another shop that wouldn’t have the part already there. Wanted some way to say thanks so here I am writing this review. This should be everyone’s local. I’ve visited twice and had great experiences both times. It’s a bit of a drive for me from Newberg, but 100% worth it. In my experience, a good bike shop doesn’t exist in Newberg, but even if one did I’d still go to Universal. The knowledge of the staff and selection of parts, particularly oem bits can’t be beat.

Customer service is absolute disaster. I went to check some road bikes, what do they have, given the limited resources nowadays. The guy was totally lack of human interaction. He said he has only three bikes with 3k price tag. I clearly said I dont have a budget in mind which indicates if I like the bike I will buy. And the guy said well look at it, he didnt even bring the bike down from the track and left. Well if I will pay something thousands of dollars, you better have a good customer service.

Excellent experience here. My rear brake hub nut came undone and rolled the first thread on the hub and nut. A quick Google search brought me to universal cycles website in one of the first results and it had a straight forward listing of brake hub nuts that might fit. I was unsure of the correct nut and brought my rear hub/brake/nut in to check and hopefully get the rear assembly back together. The nut identified was going on crooked for me at the retail/service desk and was potentially going to roll the rest of the threads. Nathan brought the assembly to Billy and within minutes Billy had it back together correctly with no cross threading, saving my rear hub. Awesome. Again wonderful service!

Ive placed several orders with Universal Cycles, and have been satisfied except for my last experience. The overall order was large with many items, but all of the products from one specific manufacturer were not in the box (a total of 5 items). I called several times to try and resolve, but was told it was my mistake and I must have thrown all of these items out with the packing materials. Needless to say very unreasonable. Ive ordered these same items from other companies and am aware of the sizes. I know they were not in the box. If you order from Universal, check your deliveries very carefully.

Terrific prices, expert staff, and fast turnaround on repairs, what more do you want? Took my mountain bike in yesterday, with squeaky brakes and wanted to ask about getting a tubeless tire set up. (The major bike shop in Beaverton, where I bought my bike originally, had just told me they could not do a tubeless set up with the wheels I had, plus they were somehow out of disc brake pads?!)Billy the Bike Whisperer, ace mechanic and with the coolest hair ever, rolled his eyes at that and says Ya, no problem, I can do that in an hour. I come back in 45 minutes, and its done, perfect brakes and schweeeet tubeless tires. I could not be happier. Also, Raul spent some good time with me talking over parts options, and was very helpful as well. This is my new go-to shop and he would do well to make it yours also.

Ive placed a lot of online orders from Universal Cycles and visited their old PDX location a few times. Since relocating to Beaverton Ive been there twice during covid. With covid you cant browse the aisles, instead you wait to be called to a counter to be assisted by their staff. My partner and I stopped by to purchase some road bike tubes and a gentleman called us up to his counter. I said we need a presta valve tube that will work with a 60mm carbon rim and then the gentleman responded so a mountain bike and then proceeded down a line of questioning that can only be described as bikesplaining. My girlfriend was extremely offended and told me thats not the first time shes been treated like that in a bike shop. We both were made to feel like we were stupid and less than. I was so angry I wanted to walk out.The interaction was terrible and I expect a lot more from a shop like Universal Cycles. We will not be going back, there are so many better bike shops in the area. I had another great experience at Universal Cycles today. I bought a Ritchey Ascent frameset from them at the end of September and built up my bike at home. I went in today to pick up a few things like tubes, a multi-tool, tire lever, etc. While I was there, talking to Kevin about the new bike, I was detailing some of the weird behavior of the rear derailleur I was having with the new build. Billy the mechanic overheard the conversation and said it sounded like a bent derailleur hanger. They asked me to bring the bike in so they could look at it. I brought it back and Billy checked out the derailleur hanger alignment and sure enough, it needed to be adjusted. He made a few tweaks and it was shifting better.Turned out my rear derailleur needed replacing as well. Its funny how you can really rack up the miles without thinking about it. Looking at my Strava data, I had put well over 6,000 miles on it through 3 Winters, lots of commuting, gravel and loaded touring/bikepacking riding, etc. It was pretty beat and the pulleys were really worn. So glad to have got this sorted. Thanks Billy!Ive been buying from UC for about 5 years now. Always great prices, service and support. I had them build me a wheelset about 4 years ago for our 1993 Miyata DupliCross MTB tandem that I turned into a touring bike for my wife and I and theyve been great: Staying true while holding up our team and touring gear.I was really happy when they moved out here to Beaverton this year. They built my bike and the level of service and communication is why this is a 2 star review. Two promises were made, and they did not follow through. Negatively impacting my experience with Universal Cycles.1 - Consult with me, prior to adding new components. They simply decided what I wanted..2 - Sending a digital receipt. After correcting them that they misentered my name and email in the original receipt. I asked they email me a copy for my records with updated information. This never happened. Either. Called to follow up and nothing. All in all, I wanted to share my experience with this local business. They seem to have a good facility but operationally it’s questionable at best.Take your business elsewhere, like river city bikes in Portland!

He really didn’t want me to ride on it… and talked one of the technicians into fixing my wheel on the spot!Dustin also found a bent spoke and ended up replacing it and true-ing my wheel for a modest service fee in < 15 minutes. Very disappointing service, not great prices, decent selection (if you know exactly what you want). I had a bike emergency and walked in here with the shifters and brakes I planned to install, and asked the guy to sell me everything else I would need. Its been a decade since I rebuilt a bike, so I made the mistake of trusting that the shop had a better idea than I did what that was- last time I just used a cheap universal kit, but didnt mind paying for name brand stuff if it meant doing the job once, right. He sold me too much brake housing, no shifter housing, too few, mismatched cable ends (and only after I asked for them), and no crimps. I made it work temporarily but will have to buy more stuff and do most of the work over.In another city I might consider going back, but its Portland and there are so many better options. From now on Ill start at the nonprofit Community Cycling Center, where they have a ton of new and used parts and more importantly, people who actually care about bikes and the people who ride them.

Then he told me to go home and scold my husband about it-seriously he did. Excuse me? Why would HE know the rules to when warehouse people work and if it says it can be picked up today, why would he think if he sent me...it wouldnt be there?!? If you cant fulfill an order, or WONT, then dont advertise that you will. This is my second unpleasant experience with unpleasant sales/retail help from here-which for the record, Ive never seen these two people before today, so new to me staff. Great shop, with online ordering and a massive amount of items in their catalog that are usually in stock.

I discovered Universal Cycles when COVID hit. I was stoked to find a local bike shop with such a large selection. When my rear wheel started deteriorating, I went down the rabbit hole hard. Universal has been the main retailer, of a few, that Ive been using to source parts for a new bike build. All orders were handled promptly. Im bummed they moved to Beaverton, and the move amid the pandemic has been crazy for them at times, but they strive for excellence, and make things excellent whenever possible. I may be moving soon, but these folks will be kept in mind for all my future cycling needs. Thank you!

I took my aging mountain bike in for a repair / tuning to get one more season out of it. The attention to service was top notch. Aaron had the bike repaired in 24 hrs. When I went to pick it up, I mentioned all the issues I was having with the shifting from my alterations. Aaron gave me a couple options and I took his advice. Josh performed the new build on my bike and now it feels like a new Enduro, ready to rock the brown pow pow.Thank you Universal Cycles Crew!

The best bike shop in Portland! They were so nice while I learned to build my own bike and was in and out over the course of a week. Great selection of gear, parts and tools & very reasonable prices.

I called to ask if they could replace a cable and housing for the rear derailleur and they said yes. They emailed me a quote that included replacing more than I had asked for. When I said no, thanks, please just do the work I wanted, they told me to come get it because the job wasnt worth it to them. After they had my bike for a week. Total jerks.

Pretty disappointing customer service, but what do you expect from big bike shop these days? I Ordered online from a different state than I reside in, thanks corona. They refused to mail to an address different than my billing address, stating “that it’s just something we won’t do right now”. Why even list the option to mail to a different address than billing, if your just going to tell me you won’t do that right now. I’m guessing they didn’t have the product in stock?

This is one of the best shops around for the most random part request. It is great to have them in town to offer such amazing supply of parts.
