This review is for the customer service at the deli department, not the store in general. I always feel like Im bothering the deli workers there. Tonight I had to walk away because of the awful, cringeworthy experience I had. Were gonna be getting our food somewhere else tonight. The guy in front of me cut his order in half because apparently slicing salami is too labor intensive the deli worker said. When it was my turn, I got four complaints about the order I was making. Oh I have to cut the meats for that, oh I dont remember whats on that sandwich, oh youre gonna have to remind me, oh we dont have that kind of bread. In a very annoyed tone. I, the customer, felt unwanted, and I walked away. The meat selection they have is excellent over there at the deli too. But the workers make me not want to order at the counter. Its unfortunate. Ive felt this way for a while too, last night wasnt my first negative experience.EDIT: I followed Safeways suggestion and contacted them. Though Im less than optimistic there will be a noticeable change at the deli department over there. I really hope there is because as I said, they have an excellent selection on meats over there.
I’ve been doing weekly pickup at this store for the past month and my experience with Michael (Associate Shopper) has been exceptional! He is conscientious, deliberate in his work, detail oriented and professional. He remembers my quirky likes and dislikes and his pleasant manner and attitude keeps me coming back to this store for pickup. Safeway has found a winner in Michael!
If you’re coming to shop, self pay, and not need any help…this Safeway is ok. But as soon as you need customer service/assistance, good luck. In my many years shopping here (only bc its the closest place to my house) anytime I need customer service, I feel like I’m bothering the workers. From their blank stares to their sighs, never have I ever felt like they were happy to be there or at least trying to make customer experience pleasant.
This safeway is in the cutts, not alot of people wandering though this shopping center. I like this safeway better then the one by my house. It seems smaller but better stalked. It has more of my favorite safeway select signature items and the lines are not as long and the checkers and workers are nice and friendly.
It seems as though Safeway may have decided to kill this store. Or at least thats what the management wants us to think. I mean its okay if the store is routinely out of food items so that it looks as though the scavenging ports have been there. Time its fine that they seem to be massively understaffed so that you can routinely respect the weight of the line of five or six people. But most recently they stopped bringing the shopping cart back from the parking lot so that most of the time I have to walk a block or so to find a shopping cart. The shining part of the experience are the employees who seem to be remarkably cheerful and efficient despite the chaos they work in. Also worth looking for are the flowers which can be a real bargain. But check the dates because occasionally what is for sale maybe near the end of its shelf life.
I am impressive with fresh flowers and korean lady work there to professional decorating and explain how to take cares I hope she works there long time
Didnt buy anything. It was super clean. Not a grocery store for poor people. I seen some items I never seen before.
Carts are hard to find, the quality of beef is poor at best and customer service sucks.
As always, anywhere in California I have ever been(except the Pittsburg location) Safeway is a beautiful place, welcoming, clean and familiar.
This particular store often does not have basic items on the shelves; and that is frustrating. Then, of course, I have to go to the Safeway located on Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard or Luckys across the street.
This is a particularly excellent Safeway. Probably the best one I have seen
Was in this Safeway July 4th at 745 AM at the deli counter. No other customers in the area but could not get any of the 8 employees working in the deli to even acknowledge I was standing there much less to take a deli order.
I wish a whole foods or molly stones would take this spot. Its a small safeway with limited stock and there is a big safeway less than a mile away. ...and a few more safeways within 2 miles. no pharmacy but they do have a bakery.
Bring back the hotwheels smh
Safeway! The selection of certain things here could be better. But seems like a clean store and workers are friendly.
Say it again Ill say it again I absolutely love Castro valley and everything in it but this will Safeway is exceptionally nice kind of small but great customer service they leave you alone basically has a good self checkout
Disappointing. Went in there to get some specific items. Checked the shelf tags. Went to check out and 3 out 4 were grossly mispriced. Didnt have the patience to debate or go get different items so I left empty handed. Sloppy tag management. Maybe they need to go back to price tags.
Great store. Always have good choices. Kinda went down on customer service. Took for ever to get someone to the bakery.. overall it was ok.
Picked up a premade cake for coworkers anniversery. Clerk was kind and helpful
Best Safeway in the area.Might not have the best stock of everything but I can always find most things I need, its clean, well organized and not too busy. Employees are all very friendly and helpful. The parking lot is big and always has good spots available.
Their cakes have more almond slices and much better, than its store at redwood Street. Good selection and service
Had a different experience. Went into deli which was undermanned for lunch time! A Mgr. which you can tell doesnt know about the deli... but who cant make a sandwich! Jumped in and she made a few sandwiches for customers. Thats service... cuz she couldve just walked away like Ive seen others do before....I appreciated that. Thx Ms. MGR!
This Safeway has been my favorite since 1976!
Never been to a Safeway and found it clean and had good prices. They had hot food and a bakery.
Decent place to shop for food
Just your regular Safeway. A little bit smaller than the one on Redwood road, but it more or less has most of the essentials. Because it is smaller, the Redwood road Safeway will tend to have more stock and if something is missing from this Safeway, odds are, it might be found at the other Safeway. Still a little confused why such a small town needs two Safeways though...
This the store I always go to for groceries. Nice place!
Fast and efficient! Cashier was nice and helpful. Dont shop at this Safeway to much. Everything is well lay out.
Very clean and great variety
Very nice place to shop.
I love the store layout, but i find the same items cheaper in other stores.
This is the better Safeway in Castro Valley, cleaner and stocked better. It maybe smaller than the bigger Safeway on Redwood Road but it is a better shopping experience.
Liked the Castro Valley store (by 24 hour fitness)
Its alright seems like everytime I go, it is not stcoked. Half empty
Being down the street from another safeway this one has well GREAT DEALS ask for manager deals on broken cases of drinks might get lucky and get surprisingly an awesome deal good luck
Since the pandemic, this is the only Safeway I’ve shopped at; it’s small, rarely crowded. They started off having someone at the door monitoring the number of folks who entered wearing masks and wiping down carts, even making sure I sanitized my hands. Last week, however, none of that. Walked right in with my self sanitized cart to encounter numerous folks without masks throughout the store, including employees not properly wearing masks. I’m not the type to usually complain, but I asked to speak to a manager upon checking out. Manager Michael asked the guy next to me to put his mask on (after I pointed him out), and gave me the boilerplate response to my concerns for the lack of SAFETY TO HIS CUSTOMERS. I returned today, a week later, and mustered up the nerve to ask both the checker and the bagger to pull their masks up over their nose as they handled my food. They did. The checker asked me what it mattered. I bit my tongue and chose to EDUCATE HER instead of be angry. I told her I was surprised that her manager hadn’t informed her of the importance of wearing and how to wear a mask properly. I’m also surprised that such a large organization hadn’t informed their management of this issue AND provided comfortable masks to their employees. Alameda county cases continue to rise. This isn’t over.
Do not like the store feels like they are watching you.
Good place to shop. Find all that I want for daily menus and other household stuff
Best one
This is one of the nicer safeways in the area. Its probably because its tucked away and far from downtown Castro valley.
It was not busy at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. Fully stocked
Some of the checkers are rude or clueless. Entire counter of groceries, he hands me a reciept and asks if i want bags. Then proceed to act like Im inconveniencing him for having them bag. Seriously... SMH.
The workers are cranky but the store is clean
Clean and organized, my only problem was, first time I was looking for the pharmacy, they have been gone a long time.
A great place to get a good steak. As with most chain supermarkets they have multiple registers but only one open.
I just wanted to give the Safeway store 580 market place a 5 star review. In this time of need this store was absolutely perfect!!They had everything I needed, toilet paper was in stock, paper towels in stock .The food that I needed was in stock.Associates were not in panic they were so niceSo thank you 580 market place !!
Go before they close, and no one is in there. So cool.
This is one of my favorite Safeways until my bad experience with an employee today. I was at self checkout and when I scanned this one item and placed it down, the self checkout lady approached me and said, I didnt hear the beep and I showed her on the screen that it scanned and she is telling me that it did not because I did not place it in the bagging area, but the computer did not tell me anything even if I did not place in the bagging area. I literally felt like telling her off that this is tyranny that I still had to do this even if the computer doesnt detect it.
The Deli counter sell stale food. They keep frying the stale chicken over and over. They will put the fresh ones on top. When someone happen to buy, they will give you all old very drying stale ones. I bought $8.99, the old lady pick them into a bag, which only have a third volume from the other store for the same thing. Watch out everyone. Nice old lady play bad thing, should just leave the bag for her.
Clean store, nice staff, they have food, which is why I go here. Idk its safeway. Its exactly what you think.
What youd expect for a Safeway. Great selection and a clean store.
Store is always clean and well stocked
Nice place to shop.
The other one is better
Always clean, great customer service. If I dont know where something is, one of the store employees do.
Great place to get interesting things like great Italian Pasta you can get anywhere else ect.. must go..
Its Safeway. Get your groceries and other items. Different ones have thier own special items. Find what you need before you buy all the things you dont.
This Safeway is close and has a good selection and good produce. I love to get the smoked pork chops when they have them.
I like that Safeway store. Its always have the items that I need. And the parking is must less stressful.
Today I visited both Safeway stores to try to find the items I needed. Safeway at Redwood Rd. And Castro Valley Blvd. Is my usual store. East Castro Valley Blvd. Safeway was busy but not really crowded . I was in and out quickly with the items I needed. Still no disinfectant, etc.
Its not as big as other Safeways but if you are in a pickle its there for you with a smile.
Could use a new floor
Ive been to this store a few times. OUTSTANDING all the time!
Worst service imaginable. Im sorry for the rant, just want people to be aware of the type of store manager Carlos is running.I have shopped at this location for years, but I have to say it seems that more and more recently the service is becoming worse. To start off the deli service wouldnt even turn around instead she had her back to me and thats how she informed me the meatloaf was out of stock that day (Sep 28, 2020) and to come back the following. This definitely wasnt great customer service, but I just blew it off as maybe a bad day for her. So then I come back the next day (Sep 29, 2020) to find the meatloaf was out again, which I understand because its late in the afternoon and it is on special. When I asked to do a raincheck the deli directed me to the cashiers like I have had to do before with no problem. When I asked the cashier to do the raincheck she had to check with I am guessing was a supervisor at the self-checkout. Instead of either informing the cashier or both coming to inform me in person the self checkout woman decides to yell from her stand about how they have not been given permission by Safeway to do rain checks. I was confused though due to the fact that in the past I had been able to. I went on to ask if this was a location policy or a company policy. To my dismay she then went a repeated what she had already said 2 more times and still from her stand. After this I gave up on the issue seeming how I obviously wasnt going to get a direct answer, which then when I was leaving she finally says that she cannot speak for other stores so it could be different. During the middle of this exchange a passing by Safeway associate went on to say that my questions were rude and holding up the line. I ended up going to the San Ramon Safeway were service was much better and there at the customer service the cashier that I rung up with and Teri at customer service explained that rain checks have been suspended due to Covid-19. This is all I wanted to know. So thank you to Teri and San Ramon Safeway, but thanks for nothing to the staff at E. Castro Valley Blvd. Safeway.
Clean place. Fast check out, too!
Like the people who work here. They help my Mom when Im not there😜
In the few years the customer service is Awful. NO ONE HELPS.JUST FOR U IS A NIGHTMARE...
I like the cheese selection
Place iz always clean and. Efficient friendly workers is the norm
Id give 5 but last night there was an older lady employee seemingly aggressively correcting another older employee humiliating him and felt absolutely upset about the lack of respect from that woman. Almost wanted to say something but couldnt find her. On a lighter note, very tidy and the rest of the employees were sweethearts. Just a shame that man has to work there for just minimum wage with that lady..
It meets my expectations. Some might take that as a passive belittlement. Don’t. How often in this world does something go exactly as expected? When this happens, I relish it. We’re working in lockstep to get the food needed for a home cooked meal. Everything according to plan.
My regular shopping destination! Staff is always helpful and pleasant. Would like a bit more of a selection of items like the Safeway on Redwood Road, but I am still more willing to go to the one at 580 Marketplace because of the more sane parking situation.
Not well stocked. Out of non-sale items.
Small parking lot, not busy, close to freeway, employees are very nice and helpful. Is well organized
They were out of lots of sales items or only one left, but you need to buy two or three of the item. No Signature Select fudge bars, the croissants for $5 are stale, and the cut-up pieces of watermelon had green edges. Other than that, it was fine! Great service from all employees!
Very nice Safeway. Normally pretty calm. One very obnoxious checker.
FOUND EVERYTHING I WAS LOOKING FOR
Safeway is a grocery store that needs to step it up. There are many choices in shopping and shoppers want a pleasant experience in terms of the physical environment as well as finding the needed items. This store has an odor when you enter on the deli side and the womens bathroom was filthy. I did mention both problems to one of the employees who sincerely seemed to care. Hopefully, corrections will be made. Very disappointing.
It was stocked with Drakes Flyway Pilsner. Easy 5 stars for me
In and out fairly quick.
I love this store. Sometimes you can go in the evening or very early in the day, and there is hardly anyone there shopping. Its like a ghost town....Love it! I have to order cakes there sometimes, and the bakery staff is Awesome. The cakes, and the Make your own cake menu is fantastic, and more detailed than what you can get at Costco. Twice the price obviously, but worth it. The parking lot does have a somewhat ill fated design, but once you get to know it, you will find your favorite off the beaten path parking space, in a remote corner somewhere, and you will be just fine. Getting in or out of the parking lot during busier times of the day can be kind of like an hour glass. Just have to be patient, and polite to the other patrons. Five Stars!!!
Everything was fine until we went to check out. The checker was very loud, almost yelling. He was wearing gloves and paying more attention to his cellphone than checking us out. It took him 50 seconds to even address us as we were standing at the counter. Never did say thank you. As an Employer myself, I would not want this person on my staff. He went right back to his cellphone as soon as we paid.
Get crowded sometime after work. But overall good
Great for a quick trip in and out. Not near as crowded as Safeway down town. Its a smaller store but organized and clean. Staff is very helpful.
Lots of variety at this store. I go to this particular Safeway for that reason.. I was surprised to see just a few very unhappy tomatoes in the bin. None looked appealing. I think it would be better for shoppers if they took those out and put up a sign when they expect new tomatoes to come in.
Love coming to the Deli here. Their selection is far superior than other Safeway stores in the area. Always friendly and always busy. Make sure to bring your patience and remember that there is a reason the line is huge.
Didnt find any bins. Most stores have bulk bins. Very clean and well- stocked store.
Clean store proper safety practices
They always have everything in stock.
I have had good times in this safe way - FYI I have been coming here for years! come to this safeway for good unexpired perfect shelved food I cant explain how awesome this store is come and see for yourself! !!!!
As usual efficiently run Safeway. I find that comforting in this helter shelter world.
Nice place and friendly.
Clean social distancing was respected! Quick in and out!
Solid urban grocery.
Typical Safeway. Overpriced items.
Good sale today on liquor
Employees at this store are wonderfully helpful and polite. Another shopper needed help finding a product we both looked for and couldnt find. Our checker knew right where it was and went and got it for her! Great service.
I was in front of a women at self check. She was in line I wasnt, and I quickly got behind her. She wasnt very nice about it, but the staff member over seeing the self check out was nice to me. I forgot my card at home, but she gave me a new Safeway Club card. So I got the discount.
Its a solid Safeway thats a little less crowded than its brother/sister Safeway down the street
