I’m a long-time collector and in a previous life worked in the rare book trade in Chicago and New York City, and Amaranth is one of my favorite stores. The inventory is selective, and the owner has a great eye for good books in excellent condition. His poetry and literature sections are very strong, as are his history and music sections. His religion shelves are always worth checking, too. He buys his books from an interesting array of local scholars and intellectuals. I strongly recommend this store.

I haunt the dollar and two dollar racks. High quality used books throughout the store, tho a little pricier than some other used bookstores.

This place is great, its all used books but theyre in good-very good condition. They cycle through stock frequently so theres always new stuff in the fiction section. Lots of NYRB paperbacks which not many used stores seem to have.

Excellent edited selection at reasonable prices. Dont come here if you need a lot of help or dont already have an idea of what you want. The beauty of this store is its fine selection of mostly collectible books by mostly 20th and 19th century writers at good prices. These previous bad reviews are from people seeming to be looking for affirmation more than the simple purpose of picking up high quality literature, etc. And dont be offended if they dont buy your books. Its their store. This is how they earn their living. They know better than you what they can re-sell. Lets respect our independent bookstores. The high quality edited selection of what they offer is a public service in this day and age. Cheers!

Outstanding selection of used scholarly and literature books in very good condition at reasonable prices. For the quality, condition and selection it is a top bookstore in the country in comparison to used bookstores I have visited in 40 other cities during my travel to U.S. cities for my work in the Trade Show Industry.

I have had contact twice with this store. The first time, I called to inquire about interest in buying a McGuffy reader. Turns out theyre a dime a dozen, so the person answering the phone wasnt interested, which is fine, but you can say No without being ice cold. The second time I came in person with an autographed childrens chapter book. I arrived 5 minutes before closing time at 5:30, which is plenty of time to hand over a book for a later decision or even a quick rejection. Door was locked with man at register about two feet from the door, refusing to make eye contact. Perhaps he makes lots of money, but if business isnt what he hoped it would be, he might want to reconsider his social skills. I wont be back.

I work next door. Called them for a question - nobody answered the phone!!! I knew that there was somebody there because I just passed by it at lunch time but didnt have the necessary information I needed. So I ran upstairs to my office, looked for them on the web and called their number. No answer!Too bad because - I found a first issue of Playboy magazine with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. in mint condition (unread) in a friends basement and he is willing to part with it. I thought Amaranth would be a perfect place to have it appraised or at least they would know how to go about selling it etc. etc. but no. I will just go somewhere else.

Ive got no experience with this shop in terms of trying to sell items, but as a buyer I appreciate the interesting selection, and that its fine to dawdle and poke around without being hounded around - low touch customer service may not work for everyone but it works for me.
