I used Gulf Coast Scuba to get my open water certification. I had a great experience! James was my instructor and he made the whole experience fun and safe. He’s excellent at explaining things and demonstrating. I felt very safe and comfortable in the water with him. They also have a shop with great gear! Oh my goodness! I cannot say enough good things about Gulf Coast Scuba! I had a blast during my Open Water Dive course and my groups instructors Katie and Mike were so helpful, informative and very patient. I needed to fill a requirement for a conservation project I am working on, so I signed up for the class, but by the end I walked out with the desire and curiosity to explore the underwater world for years to come! I enjoyed every interaction I had at Gulf Coast Scuba when I took the Open Water Course to get PADI-certified. James was my instructor, and he was informative and patient with me while buying/renting my scuba gear, giving me tips on how to select the best gear for my size and comfort. James and our dive masters, Rachel and Mike, were professional, friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, and fun. They managed to teach a class of 10 people with varying degrees of comfort in the water all of the same skills with a lot of personal attention for each to work on the specific skills we had trouble with. Just finished getting my familys open water referrals done - needed coursework and pool dive within 10 days and this was the only shop that could make it happen. I got the impression that each of the staff were genuine and really wanted me to have a good and safe time.I did my SSI Open Water Diving Certification here just last week. I didn’t anticipate that I would be anxious, but I actually had a terrible panic attack the first day underwater. Our class had a great ratio of instructors and divemasters to students, so someone actually stayed with me to help me calm down. If it wasn’t for all their extra time with me and encouragement, I’m not sure I would have been able to continue. With every day, I became more comfortable and more confident underwater and was able to successfully complete my certification. I can’t thank the staff here enough. Now I’m eager to acquire more of my own gear and go for my next dive!

Went here recently for my open water certification. This place is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Their intent was clearly to educate and support their students/customers rather than to nickel and dime them. Im not an especially adventurous person by default, so scuba diving is at the fringe of my comfort zone. Throughout the course of my certification class, whether it was in the pool or out in the lake, I felt safe and at ease with these guys. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to be certified or simply looking for a scuba shop in Houston.

They were extremely helpful, and I definitely learned a lot from both of them. After completing the course, I feel very comfortable and confident to go on some diving adventures.

In a word: Awesome. I dive a Hollis prism II rebreather and had switched from front mounted counter lungs to back mounted lungs and was having some real challenges getting all of the hoses and the rest of the kit to work well with the new back mounted lungs. One phone call with Gulf Coast and some suggestions and I’m reminded of why I like “flying” on a rebreather.

I met the owners of this shop while scuba diving. Other shops will give you one price to start training, then keep adding on extra things you have to buy and pay for, which add up to an additional 40%-60% on top of what youve already paid. These owners are upfront with exactly how much itll cost.

We had a really excellent experience renting equipment from this extremely professional and very nice company. All of the equipment was top notch and extremely well-maintained. They went out of their way to accommodate us when we needed to drop off early before they opened their shop. We will definitely not be using anybody but this company in the future for our gulf coast scuba needs.

Got my certificate in a week! Walk out with calm and confident! Jim was very patience helping the students to get their gears and precise on the equipment we need! I swam for almost 20 years and felt very comfortable in water, but scuba diving is a new activity to me after all. Therefore I was freaked out and forgot to breath when underwater in the pool! I had to return for the second practice and Jim was there to help me to figure out a way to calm me down and being comfortable again in and underwater. And I finally passed the pool practice! When we go to the open water for the last two days’ exercise, I was nervous before getting to the water but feeling much more confident of course. And with Jim’s clear instruction, I was able to calm down and breath freely underwater with my air tank! It is important to get a professional and knowledged instructor for this activity! Your life will be upon your own knowledge and management after the class! And Jim definitely exceeds in the area!

My PADI certification training was fantastic. The pace and the teaching methodology helped me out to overcome my fears of diving. Besides, safety was always reinforced at all times. Jim is very knowledgeable and practical with all the training material but specially during the dives. He was even wearing a special neoprene hat to make himself visible, since the lake had very limited visibility. Also, while purchasing my gear, he would be spending time explaining to me the important things to consider and he was right, I felt very comfy in the water. I just wish I can give them 10 stars since this class was 10x more fun than what I expected it

I took this Open Water class so I could go Diving in Bali. Jim and Aiar go above and beyond to make sure everyone is safe and has a great time. I have been impressed by the knowledge of every staff member Ive interacted with at Gulf Coast Scuba. I had done a ton of research and calling around to various dive shops, but ultimately selected Gulf Coast Scuba because I was impressed with their knowledge and their great customer service. Diving safely is important to me so I wasnt just looking price, although it seems that Gulf Coast Scuba has every other dive shop beat in that department too!I went to the shop to get signed up for the class and Jim helped me pick my gear. Everything he picked for me fit perfectly when I went to use them on the dives later. My fins were a bit tight in the heel, but even then he offered to either exchange them out or help me stretch them to they fit! Free of charge!The course instruction itself was phenomenal. Katie Park knows her stuff! Everyone was constantly asking questions throughout class, and she answered every single question without hesitation, no matter how difficult the question was. She was clearly passionate about diving, and that passion was infectious as she talked about the sport she loves so much. When it came to explaining concepts and skills, she clearly explained all of the skills to us. I always felt like I knew exactly what to do, and then she would practice them with us until we were comfortable and could do them easily. We had one other Dive Master helping out with the class, and then someone else training to be a Dive Master. Both were equally as knowledgeable and helpful, and it gave us basically two students to one instructor when we were practicing. I truly felt like I had one-on-one attention the entire class.When I started the class, I was nervous about how comfortable in the water I would feel after the class was done and if I would be truly ready to dive outside of the class. Now, having finished, there is no question that I am equipped with the right knowledge and skills. I loved every second of the class and cant wait to go dive! I will absolutely be back to take additional courses from them and would highly recommend this shop to everyone!!

Jim and Aiar are operating one heck of an operation at Gulf Coast Scuba! My wife and I took their SSI Open Water Diver certification class together and opted to buy our gear at the shop. We are glad that we did, because we were able to get my wifes fins and boots exchanged for a better fitting combo. They really went out of their way to get everything perfect for us.James, the Assistant Dive Trainer, and Clara, a divemaster who helped throughout our classes, checked all the boxes for new scuba divers. They offered helpful tips and were calm, collected, and fun. Unfortunately our open water dives at Mammoth Lake were in very poor visibility. Nothing anyone could do about that though! Clara was teamed up with my us and despite barely being able to see each other, we both felt calm with her there. Clara even lent my wife her dive hood because she was cold!We got a great sense of the dive community and both look forward to joining their dive trips next year!

Gulf Coast Scuba was a great choice for our Advanced Certifications. We had originally completed our Open Water Course at a different dive shop that was so concerned with selling us everything they possibly could (whether we needed it or not) and had limited dates available for certifications. Gulf Coast was different- I never felt pressured to buy anything. If I brought up something I was interested in, then Jim or Aiar would give me all the details- pros AND cons on equipment you could tell they had first hand knowledge with. We ended up buying quite a few different things at great prices- and felt confident they would be the best fit for us.The instruction in our courses was excellent as well. While Jim and Aiar had different teaching styles, each dive we did was both informative and fun. They seemed to genuinely want to give you any and every tip possible to help you enjoy diving. Overall it was a great experience and we hope to go diving again with them soon.

BEST DIVE SHOP EVER! They helped fit me perfectly with all the essential gear, explaining so well what to look for and what was important. Our Dive Masters were so great - I felt comfortable and safe the whole time. Even with a larger group, they worked with everyones pace, concerns, etc. so seamlessly. All my questions were answered well, and they gave great stories/tips on diving! Plus, pizza was waiting for us at the shop at the end of our last dive! Ill definitely be coming back for future classes to get my advanced certification - these people are the best!!

I did my scuba certification (open water diver) through Gulf Coast Scuba. I also purchased some quality snorkel equipment here. The instructors and dive masters are amazing. We spent multiple days together getting confident and acquainted with the equipment in a pool first and then graduated to the open water. I feel prepped and confident for my next underwater adventure.I made a great choice picking Gulf Coast for my cert. They never pressured me to buy equipment or sign up for further courses, they legit just wanted to ensure we had fun and felt safe and secure the whole time. Ive spent time (and money) at several dive shops in the Greater Houston Area. Scuba diving is an inherently expensive recreational sport, but Gulf Coast Scuba seems to be the first place to not try and take advantage of its customers. This dive shop truly feels like family, and the recommendations received over the years have been nothing but the best.

I first heard about this shop when my instructor(Katie) moved here from a different shop. Katie is likely the best instructor in Houston for open water training but is also very experienced as she is a technical/cave diver that has been all over the world. When she recommended the shop I already knew that I would be working with great people and I was right. Jim( the owner) and Aiar worked very closely with me to ensure that I had the right equipment for my next dive trip to Egypt and did not try and oversell in any way. In fact, as I was taking a refresher course ( with Katie of course.. who by the way, met me early on a Saturday morning in cold weather before she had to leave for a personal trip later that morning ), they even let me borrow equipment to ensure I was happy with my purchase. You can’t ask for people who are more caring and passionate about the sport. Each time I go in I end up staying longer that expected due to the great conversation and hospitality. Love the shop and would recommend this scuba family to anyone in Houston or surrounding areas. Also.. if you have any questions about equipment at all, please stop by to talk to Aiar and Jim and Katie also has some nice tricks/tips to help setup your equipment to make it more functional, comfortable, and customized for you.

Fantastic place to get certified. Carl was an amazing instructor. Aiar and Jim are very easygoing and fun to chat with as you go through the process of registering for scuba and getting your equipment. We took the Open Water Certification course. After we completed our class we were invited back to log our dives and they fed us some delicious pizza. Cant say enough about how great Gulf Coast Scuba is!

They are very helpful in the store and they don’t sell any under performance equipment. The course was awesome and there is a lot to learn about diving. The Instructor Katie was the best, she has a lot of dives under her name and is very experienced and a great instructor.

Hands down a great shop to visit for any diver new or experienced. I took my open water, react right, Nitrox, and equipment techniques courses there. They are very patient and will make sure you understand the material before you move on to the next section. The staff, as well as the dive masters, are very friendly and knowledgeable. They also have a great selection of gear from fins all the way up to rebreathers. The staff listens to what your needs are and won’t put you into gear that doesn’t fit for what your needs are. They also won’t try to oversell you either. I bought some Scubapro gear from them and I’m wanting to customize the gear with some color and they are willing to order the parts they normally don’t have in stock so I can add it to my gear. They also have a nice classroom for their in person academic classes before you go into the water. I highly recommend going to Gulf Coast Scuba for all your scuba needs gear or classes.

We have watched this shop come together so brilliantly. These guys are serious about scuba. They continue to gain more and more knowledge on the sport so they can pass it on to their customers. They have a full service shop for air and regulator repair. Tons of fun gear and gadgets, and are knowledgeable about all of it. Looking forward to doing more business with these guys in the future.

What a wonderful weekend! I haven’t felt this free in mind for a long time! Diving is like meditation, so peaceful and graceful. It taught me how much breathing (the pace, the depth) impacts us human being. Nothing can freak you out if you can just breath. I love you bubbles!

I took one of his all inclusive class which was very reasonably priced and a great deal. We got some gear to keep permanently and some we borrowed. We then went first through written material followed by spending time learning drills in the pool. For the finale we spent two days doing drills in a lake. Jim is a natural teacher he made sure we always had fun while learning all important skills. I feel completely ready to going scuba diving on my own. I highly recommended this shop and the classes they offer.

We had a great time taking Rescue with Aiar. I was impressed with how competently he demonstrated the required skills, and his stories of real-life rescue experiences were something else. Overall it was a very educational experience, and we still managed to have lots of (exhausting) fun while learning important rescue skills!

Ayar and his team are excellent scuba instructors. They were able to manage creatively to provide instructions during the covid 19 lockdown.

Came here for my Padi Open Water Certification and the instructor, Jim, was fantastic! Picked Gulf Coast Scuba at first, primarily because they dont require you to purchase your own mask/snorkel/fins. Theyll have ones for you to borrow if you dont want to make that commitment right away. But ended up extremely happy with my decision going with Gulf Coast Scuba because of everything else. Jim and Aiar are two of the greatest, most genuine people I’ve ever met, and they gave me so much attention as a visiting diver from out of town that I will be doing further dive trips with them in the future once I get more experience.I did my open water dives on referral from NYC with Aiar and Michael before a recent trip to Australia, and they were both extremely patient with me during each dive. Michael was instrumental in helping me overcome initial insecurities at the surface. Aiar especially made the experience relaxing and fun at the surface and underwater while making sure every diver understood proper techniques and procedures. 10/10 experience even in very cold water. You have to meet everyone at this shop!

These guys are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. They were more than helpful in getting my family and I certified for our scuba trip.They took the training very seriously, giving me confidence for my dive, and welcomed us to come back to share how the trip went. Our family of four had a lovely time obtaining our certification through Gulf Coast Scuba. Jim and Aiar were extremely knowledgeable and friendly and were great with our children aged 12 and 13. They were very helpful also with fitting us with gear and other preparation for a dive trip. We highly recommend this business.

I signed up because I have a trip to Costa Rica, they are literally the best out there I been to a few shops inquiring about the license but I singed up gulf Coast.CARL was our instructor super super friendly and a very good friend, dive master CHRIS was very experienced and friendly I can’t wait to dive with those guys in Mexico:)

I had an pre-travel urgent need to get my regulator inputs reversed at short notice and popped into GCS on the off chance they might be able to help. Super service they reconfigured on the spot and showed me how do it. Thank you so much, very helpful.

Aiar, Jim, and Andrea were all fantastic! We did a PADI open water certification course with them last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Theyre full of knowledge, experience, and patience, which makes for a great learning experience. Amazing experience! I felt extremely comfortable interacting with the instructors here. They were very patient with me being I wasn’t very confident with my skills. I love that the number of students per instructor were small, which made me feel like eyes were on me at all times. Very comforting! Great scuba shop in the River Oaks area. The staff is very knowledgeable on many different types and depths of dives. I received excellent training with Ayar completing my buoyancy dive while also reiterating the basic fundamentals I needed after not diving in multiple years. Ill be back soon for my next dive.

My son and I took their Open Water Diver certification course. Jim and Aiar are great teachers with a passion for diving and helping others learn to dive. They were both very patient and thorough with us as beginners. We learned a lot and had a ton of fun too. In fact, all of the folks we met through the shop were very friendly and super helpful. In addition to the great people, they have top notch gear too. We’re looking forward to working with them again on future dives and additional certifications.

I am so excited to finally be able check off getting scuba certified from my bucket list and using my SSI dive training on my next vacation. As a first timer, learning all these new skills to implement in the water, can be very intimidating. Not from Aiar and his friendly and knowledgeable team. They made the whole experience welcoming. They took their time with every individually to patiently teach us the proper way to dive. Gulf Coast Scuba has made what was a thought into a reality. I highly recommend Golf Coast for people who are beginners to this world and who have fear from water. I am one of those who used to be scared of water but in no time Gulf Coast Scuba diving experts have changed everything for me. Now, I am in love with diving.
