This was second time visiting this place and it did not fail to set me in a good mood.A very nice vibe to the bar whether you sit inside or outside. The rice bowls are really worth trying. The sweet potato bean Taco was an interesting addition to the food I like here. They have some good collection of Sour Beers. They have corn hold games.
Nice place. Loved the outdoors seating with fire pits. Cajun Poboy, Philly steak sandwiches had good flavor, but small...no sides with either. Great selection of beers. However no checking of IDS. Plenty of underage college kids drinking
I am visiting town and decided to come here for happy hour on a Thursday evening. I was just looking to grab a couple drinks and maybe some food, but left pleasantly surprised!Parking: They have plenty of parking in their lot and an overflow lot immediately adjacent to theirs. I can imagine parking would be difficult to find during peak hours. We were lucky enough to get a spot right as someone was leaving.Ambiance: I was not expecting much in terms of ambiance, but it turned out to be a really nice setting! There was plenty of outdoor seating, lots of greenery and plants, and it is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset. In fact, I happened to go on a day where the sun looked a brilliant red as it was setting. It is also dog friendly with plenty of people bringing along their furry friend. Inside there was also plenty of seating - tables, booths, and bar as well.Food and drinks: I came mainly for the drinks, but left more into their food. For drinks, I first asked for recommendations for something like a Hefeweizen or wheat, and the bartender recommended the West Main Wheat. It was a solid beer, very light on the wheat flavor. For my second beer, I tried a seasonal beer called Moon Rabbit - a Japanese rice lager. Again, solid beer, nothing special. For the last beer, I got the Que Sera, a sour Berliner Weisse. Solid beer, very subtle hint of tart/sour. At least for the three beers I tried, they were solid beers, but could have been a bit more bold in terms of their described flavors. They have plenty of other options that I did not try, so I admittedly cannot speak to their whole selection. Still good beer nonetheless, though! For food, I ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich in their Korean BBQ sauce. Honestly, I did not expect to find this good of a chicken sandwich here! For me, it is probably tied with the best chicken sandwich I have ever had, so that is saying a lot! The sauce was not what I had in mind for Korean BBQ, but let me tell you that the sandwich was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised! I was not in the mood for bar food when I came in, but I am glad I picked this item! The piece of chicken was huge (see photo), the sauce was delicious (not spicy if anyone is wondering), and there were some toppings like cucumbers that added nice texture. My friend ordered the Tuna Poke Bowl, which I also thought was really well done. I was surprised that a bar of all places made poke this good. The only downside in my opinion is that the portion for the poke was pretty small considering it was $14. Overall, super impressed with the food!Service: I read some reviews about how the service was slow, the place was not well kept, etc., so I kept an eye out for these things. I did not experience any of these things. I was checked in on frequently, my drinks came quick, and I felt my food came out in an appropriate time considering how busy they were. Then again, I always time when to order my food when a place looks busy (I ordered with my second beer and my food came when I was ready to order the third beer). Overall, I thought the service was great!A hundred percent would come back! If the weather is nice, this place has a great outdoor venue if you are looking to be outside for a bit! Great food and solid beer. Keep up the good work!
Hands down my best place for hanging out in Iowa City in both cold/hot weather. Looooove the outdoor seating with the lights and music. In the cold you can stay warm by the fireplace. In the warm weather just enjoy the fresh air. Food is light but filling. Personal fav’s are the pretzel, cheese fries, and falafel. Also, nice for big groups, and if you want to watch the game they have some big screens. If I could give 10 stars, they defo deserve it.
It was incredible! Great staff and great beer. Thanks to Alexi for the brewery tour. It was really fun.
My family and I were in town for the weekend and attempted to stop here on a Saturday night however, we couldnt find a parking spot for several blocks so decided to come back for lunch the following day. We were SO glad we did! We arrived around 12:30 and the place was already fairly busy. We were seated right away and greeted by our server, Alex. It is a fairly open concept thats warm and inviting with a large beer garden with fire pits throughout. We enjoyed a couple beers each during our visit, from IPAs to Sours and didnt find one we didnt like! Our kids got cheeseburger and fries while my wife and I shared our dishes, the Falafel on Flatbread and the Korean brisket fried rice (I cant remember the exact name, but it was on their brunch menu). The food was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor! We will 100% stop here again when in the area. Very family friendly environment! Our server Alex gave us great service and you could tell by his attitude he was just a genuinely good person which made our visit that much more pleasurable! 10/10 stars!
Great beer, fantastic beer garden, wonderful atmosphere, food is sort of ok. Love their indoors and outdoors and because it is large, it feels outside of Iowa!
Had a great time here! Brew was good and the food was amazing, I have a food allergy they worked around wonderfully and the staff was so wonderful!
Great food and drinks! My husband and I are from out of town doing our road trip and were feeling very lucky stopping by. We tried a variety of beers all of them are good, and our subs are really good too. Really love my bunh mi sub - forgot to mention about adding tofu and mushroom when I was ordering, so if we stop by again on our way back, I’ll try it with tofu and mushroom added.
Fantastic chicken sandwich! The fries and all of the other sandwiches were excellent also!
Big Grove is great. Theres something for everyone. Theyve got good food, good beer, and tons of space (indoor and outdoor). My personal favorites are the fondue fries, the fried chicken sandwich, and Johns white ale.
Went there for the second time yesterday. The beer quality is tops for micro-breweries, with a good assortment also. The atmosphere is great, especially outside, which is awesome. And everything we have tried from the menu has been fantastic. In particular, their specialty burger should be a contender for best burger around. The tacos and wings were delicious too. To top it off, the service was great both times. (Note to BGB: Lauren had our table yesterday, and she was phenomenal!) Theres so many choices in the Iowa City dining scene these days, but its going to be hard going anywhere else when were in Iowa City, as much as we love this place.
We were only at Iowa City for the day and so glad we stumbled upon this brewery! Huge outdoor seating area. Dog friendly. Lots of shade. Friendly staff and great food and beer! What more can you ask for?
We visit here every time we are in Iowa City, it’s a must stop in location. We’ve sat inside and watched the game, or pulled up a chair out on the patio to enjoy sitting outside with a cold beer. Food is very good, the beer is even better. Service is always very good, but ask for Travis for the 5 star treatment, he’s the best. The variety of beers makes it impossible to not find one you will really like.
Great brews, food and service. If you are cruising on I80 take the few miles out of your way and stop.
Our service was horrible. We got there before 6 and it was almost 7 before we had any water or food. Our waiter forgot about us. We ask to have one of the dishes without the sauce on it and have it on the side was told that would be no problem. It came with sauce on it and a cup of extra on the side. We just werent happy all the way around.
Overall good experience - the only suggestion I would make is clear tables. Nothing was picked up from any tables with customers during Iowa game and long after other tables with customers who had left, nothing was cleared/cleaned from the tables. Plenty of staff roaming around so no reason to leave customers with tables full of dirty dishes, glasses and debris.
Loved this place, the outside seating, and that they are pet friendly until I learned how one of the managers fires their staff on a whim with no warning, no notice and with no explanation. I had read about this online and then saw it happen myself multiple times to friends kids. These kids are on pins and needles everytime they go to work and that guy is there. Not cool. A big group of us used to go there all the time....no more. We wont go. Treat your staff better. They rely on income for survival, its no joke to be treated like that.
LoVe! What a fun place..food menu very eclectic and yummy..beer selection out of this world..I suggest the Big Grove IPA or the pomegranate truffle! Service is grand as well..let me try a bunch of different beers to find what I liked..game room.. outdoor seating..big indoor bar with open garage doors ...gamtine tvs...this place has it all!
Best atmosphere for watching a game and vising with friends...love the attention of the staff. Love the Spicey Eddy...wish it was available every day.
I was in the area on a business trip many years ago and came to Big Grove, fast forward to a week or so ago and I was in the area again. Good food, great beer and a good vibe.
What an awesome place to hang out with friends! Outdoor area is HUGE and very nicely done. An area for dogs to play, so many places to sit to cozy up to a fire or sit inside to watch sports on a gigantic screen. We will definitely be back.
This is a fun place especially for younger people. Its huge. I think they have 75 people on their wait staff. Its a bit loud and boisterous but a really good overall experience. Lots of fire pits on the outside. Huge variety of beer. The food is quite good and moderately priced.
Nice bar that has plenty to do. The NFL play offs were on and they have great big screens to watch them on. The game room is for me! I LOVE SHUFFLEBOARD. They have ping pong and a connect game. We came in on Sunday afternoon and games were unoccupied. The outdoor patio called to us for when warmer weather arrives with plenty of seating and wonderful fire pits. They have a stage for live music.Food was ok and they kept it so cold inside. It’s a large area by the tv screen so even with the sound turned way down it’s hard to hear others talk because every one around has to speak loudly.Next to the register they posted their daily specials. We had the guacamole had too much citrus that some places add to prevent browning but it really is hard to find a place that does it well. The Ruben, tacos, Leek soup and Korean bowl.
Awesome beer, delicious food, very friendly service, great large outdoor dog-friendly patio. I hope I find myself in Iowa City again sometime. I will definitely return!
What a fun place! Every staff member we encountered went above and beyond! Danny was kind enough to give us a personal tour of the brewery and explain the whole process thoroughly. Big Grove will always be the place to be when we hit IC!!
Love this place! Great open area to chill out and enjoy a great menu and a fantastic assortment of craft beer. Try the pretzel.
My mom, my husband and my mother in law came here. All three of their meals were good. I got the burger which for the cost wasnt good. It was extremely thin and barely there, it was over cooked and dry, I would have sent it back but it was the 2nd time it came because the first time it came it was wrong which it okay-mistakes happen. I would recommend getting something other than the burger because for the cost of the burger it isnt worth the money.
Have not been here in a couple years. The menu has been reduced, miss my usual. No more window ordering. The tacos were very small to me and pricey. I left hungry. I used to get a blonde fatale but now they only carry their own beer, which to me is ok. The gal at the bar was nice and helpful. The facility is where the money has been invested. Lots of build outs. I stopped on a Thursday for lunch and the place was packed. Bathrooms are nice. Souvenir shop.
My girlfriend and I loved the vegan buffalo cauliflower wings. The space is huge - bigger than any bar or brewery I’ve visited. The gigantic outdoor seating area was really pleasant and beautiful, and the food was filling and delicious.
Beer was good. Lauren was a wonderful waitress, extremely pleasant and quick getting our beers😃
First off service was great she was positive and very helpful. They were out of West Main Wheat and sangria. Now the place table and bench was dirty and place smelled like old beer plus music was very loud.Food was ok nothing to brag about fries were not hot chicken sandwiche was half the size of the bun.Solon Big Grove is so worth the drive will not come back here.
Great food, great service, great beer. Lovely eatery and beer garden.
BG never disappoints. The patio was a great place for a nice July 4th lunch. Great staff, great food, craft beers and a huge patio - what more could you ask for. This is a must-stop in Iowa City!
Saw the William Eliot Whitmore show, outdoor concert hit square in the feels nicely.Great ambiance, didnt hurt knowing I helped to landscape a large degree of the surroundings to boot.
My kids and I went out to Big Grove Iowa City to meet friends for the first time in over a year. We have not been anywhere. Danny was extremely helpful during our entire visit- from helping to navigate the locations to order to getting some French fries and carbonated water for the kids. He also jumped in to help when I was in line to buy beer and a t-shirt to take home. He made our first trip out pretty wonderful. I’ll admit that I felt like I had never been out in public before, and he made it all feel smooth and welcoming. We will be back!! Thank you Danny!
Service was terrible. Sat down and waited 15 minutes for a drink. Followed by a 20 minute to order food after having to ask. While sitting at the bar we were only checked in twice during our 3 hour stay. On top of that, food order was wrong and got a weird vibe from the staff which we dont know why. The style of the place is fun and nice but the food is not that good and service was terrible.
Love the outdoor seating and how pet friendly it is. Not the best customer service experience at the bar. I had the pork belly rice bowl and it wasnt very good either. I will definitely miss this place!
Been here 3 or 4 times and the food, service and atmosphere never disappoint. Great vegetarian options. Love this place!
Excellent choice to spend a Friday Night with friends.
Good food and great beer! Wide selection good service. Wonderful atmosphere and dog friendly.
Excellent atmosphere, great food and good beer. Huge outdoor area with lots to do for the kids.
Food was pretty tasty and good but everything is expensive for the portions you get. $10 for a sandwhich that requires an extra $3 to get fries and more to get a drink is a little ridiculous to me. Also the water comes out of a water fountain which made me laugh at first but it tastes funny (and with Iowa’s water quality I don’t want funny tasting water). $5 dollar pints are pretty standard but I’ve heard mixed reviews on the drinks. I’m underage so I can’t say for sure except they have a lot of IPAs (damn hipster brewery trend)
Place Is awesome and very dog friendly ...Plenty of outdoor space, as well as indoor ...Food was amazing and perfect ! ...
Highly Recommend! Great beer, great food and a great staff to make the entire experience exceptional!!
A great experience. Very busy but incredible service.
Great place to take friends and family and get a beer, and a great selection of international foods. I struggle to pick ONE thing to eat every time I’m here :-) it all is so good.
Great service and great food. I got the Szechuan Bowl, which was spicier than I expected, but totally worth it!
We had a tasty fest beer! Monday night, food truck night!!
Their food, drinks, and service are all awesome!! A great place to relax and have fun. Their sour beers are the best.
Such a great space and the music was amazing (Kevin Burt), but there for an hour and no server.
If you are looking for a place to hang out with friends and drink this is a 5 star place. If you are looking for a place to eat 3 stars. The food was okay, the beer was good, the atmosphere was great.
Great food, fantastic patio, wonderful service. The kids enjoyed the burger and Mac n cheese. We loved the tacos and a taste of the craft beer.
This place could be nice if they didnt try so hard to make their customers wear face coverings.
Chi omega party for dads weekend still here!!
Great beer and atmosphere friendly staff a must stop in if you are in the area
The food is great. My wife and I enjoy stopping in for a drink and a sandwich. I enjoy getting a flight of beers they have on tap while my wife gets a traditional mixed drink made from locally sourced liquors and Big Groves beers. They also have their brews for sale to take home. Get a 5oz sample of a beer and see if you would enjoy a few to take home.
Buttermilk Chicken sandwich was a little overdone, but the Mock Mules where delicious. Normally I prefer Virgin Mojitos (Alcohol Alergy). Fire pits, games, great music... really do like this place.
Been here 3 times now.Solid beer selection (although concerning that they were out of their BGB IPA on Friday), with additional beer from other breweries as well! (some bartenders pour beer better than others... ) - havent tried their cocktails and wine (not sure why you would at a brewery... unless youre desperate). But WOW! great ping pong tables and shuffle board. Even a foos ball table (although they were playing with a ping pong ball - not sure where the foos ball went...).And great beer selection - lots of styles - over 10+ options on tap.Huge space - came with 10+ friends and we fit very comfortable - its like 2 basketball courts put together - and theres outdoor space too.Only issue would be with the food - I had a great experience this last time with the burger and salad. But previously - had a poor experience with their asian inspired beef sandwich and fries. Was expecting more given what I had heard about the Solon location..
Excellent vibe. Great service. Not your typical bar food. So delicious!!
Food is good and nice beer selection. Venue can get loud and get overwhelming, but spaced out table and table service to facilitate social distancing was a nice addition. I like covid big grove better then business as usual big grove.
Couldnt place a to go order at 7 pm on a friday night.ETA: If you cant serve to go orders then you are under staffed. You missed out on potential future sales as well as this one. We wont be trying again.
I had a really good time with my friends there, the employees were all wearing masks and they had a really good musical taste. I just wonder why nobody was dancing around.
Placed to go order of wings. They were delicious. The wings were cooked well done which means they werent soggy. So effing good.
Great beer and food. Had tacos, but tried the kids chicken strips....Amazingly big, tasty, and moist. Nice atmosphere.
Delicious drinks and delicious food. Cheese fries with bacon jam were out of this world and chicken tenders were different than any I have ever had. Wow!
Good services and good people
Who doesn’t love a brewery?!If you’re into the brewery thing this place has it all. Food, sit down service, two bars - one enormous and the other standard, multiple TVs including large projector screen, outdoor seating for probably 150 people with multiple fire pits, umbrellas, 4 corn hole “pits”, ping pong tables and a large fenced in lawn area for you to neglect your children. Have been to maybe 25 breweries around the country and have never seen anything this big or well designed.Food was good bar food. Beer was average but had good selection for a variety of palates. But they also had lots of other mainstream brews as well. Even a kombucha tap!Catch an Uber or walk the 2 miles from town.
Beer was great food was good had the pretzel and pork belly tacos. And both beers I tried where great.
Amazing and bar. Bring your dog!
I LOVE this place; the food is delicious, the in-house beers are refreshing, and the ambiance is fantastic. The staff has been taking the coronavirus pandemic very seriously, and I always enjoy chatting with the staff and the friends by my side. Dont pass it up the next time youre in Iowa City!
Amazing food, amazing beer and beyond amazing staff. Our waitress was super nice and very helpful. Cory was unbelievable but he made me a liar when he showed me several samples of beer that I liked. PS Im not a beer drinker. Very personable and definitely made me feel as though I was more than another customer.
