I felt extremely discriminated against as a mother when they would not let me enter with my well behaved preschool child. I will never shop here and left feeling very angry. Why would a store make life even harder for single moms and dads? As if it isnt hard enough. My child was wearing a mask and had sanitized his hands, so I do not understand what the problem was.

I have shopped at this store occasionally over the past six years, and I have always felt the owners were rude and judgmental to their customers but have looked the other way. I have never left a review before, but this was my final visit, and I am so tired of their discriminatory attitude. I have had friends banned from their store because they have shopped with their children inside, others who have been chewed out because they set items they were planning to purchase on the floor or shelf while looking, and I’ve been not allowed in because I had my infant with me. Today I was told to leave because my mask had slipped while my arms were full with heavy dishes. They do not offer carts or shopping baskets.I can understand limitations due to covid, but this is getting out of hand not allowing people in the store with young children and having ridiculous mask mandates when people are trying their best to follow the rules they put in place. Some common courtesy or plain kindness would be enough to make me stay. I will not shop there again and would not recommend anyone to continue shopping there. Extremely rude.

I have never left a review before, let alone a negative one. I attempted to come into the store to shop and was stopped by an extremely rude man. He ordered me out of the store because I had my infant twins with me. He told me that children under the age of 16 are not allowed in the store. I asked him why and he wouldn’t give me a reason other than they don’t want kids in the store. I have NEVER seen any establishment refuse to allow someone to enter with their children. I would understand if I was allowing for toddlers to run around and causing problems, but I have two small infants in a stroller. He could not have been more rude and short with me. I have been there many times before having children and will not be returning. Not allowing for children into a public store is ridiculous and unacceptable. For many like myself, who don’t have the option to come without children are basically being told that they are not welcome at their establishment and that is beyond unacceptable. His rude and dismissive behavior made it that much worse. I’ll be spreading the word-if you have children, you’re not welcome at Housework’s and you need to take your business and money elsewhere.

The owner is probably one of the rudest people I have ever met. I go to this store regularly and I’ve never had a good experience. She talks down to you, doesn’t let you take a phone call, (I was quietly asking my fiancé if she wanted a certain item) and I witnessed her being completely disrespectful to many customers while doing my shopping at this establishment. As a business owner you should want return customers and to treat people with common decency. Please do not give this woman your business. She is mad at the world and talk to people as if they are a piece of dirt on her shoes

My first experience here will be my last. While I was there several unsavory events occurred. I immediately noticed that the male employee behind the counter was not wearing a mask despite a sign on the demanding all patrons do, regardless of vaccination. I overheard a lady asking if masks were provided since she didn’t have one. She was rudely told by the female houseworks employee that they not have any masks to give here and that she absolutely could not enter without one. Shortly after a woman tried to enter with her son who looked to be in his early teens. The female employee, again unnecessarily rudely, told her she could not enter with her son because he looked to be under 16. When the lady asked why she, was told because the big sign in the window says so. After an elderly lady asked the male employee about the price of an item without a price tag he gave a rude and vague reply. The elderly lady then asked about the price of a book, after which he then began ignoring her. All of this happened within no more than ten minutes and the store had several other people shopping around. BOTH employees where horrifically rude to individuals that posed relatively trivial questions. Why are employees demanding shoppers wear masks when they themselves can’t be bothered to wear them? Who treats customers like this?

I have been shopping at this store for over 20 years and would have no complaints. I browsed and often chatted with the people who were sorting and stocking. As a small business owner myself, I appreciated the cheerful friendly attitude of the workers. But... last year I went in for what would become my final visit. Due to advancing osteoarthritis of the hips I had been needing a walker and then a wheelchair. This day I was accompanied by my husband. Im not usually paranoid but the previous couple visits I sensed a change in the way I was treated by staff. No more cheerful smiles or helpfulness. I felt mostly ignored so I just browsed quickly through my favorite sections, paid and left. Same kind feeling this day. Like I wasnt welcome. Then on the way out, I went ahead as my husband waited in line to pay for our purchases. When he caught up with me he told my how the lady at the desk asked him if I had put back the little plastic, taped up box of assorted jewelry I had been looking at. He told her that he had put it back for me since I had decided against it. After well over 20 years of sometimes frequent and sometimes not as frequent a visitor and spending what would add up to quite a bit of money over all, this was a crushing and humiliating experience for me. One of my first experiences with discrimination of elderly or disabled people. I am and have been a respected member of this community for most of my adult life and had not noticed how poorly the disabled are treated in many retail establishments (and for that I am truly sorry). To be watched and treated as though Im not trustworthy was a new experience for me and at a time in my life when I feel as though I should have earned the respect of others, I am made to feel less than. I will not return for more of that. My disease is devastating enough.

I was shopping and had a number of items to purchase and still had multiple aisles to go through when I was asked to leave because I had been there an hour. They are regulating the number of people in the store due to Covid which is great BUT they should ask the people wanting to come in to wait a bit (and explain why) rather than asking people to leave. I was so angry I did not buy my items and left the store. Customers should NOT be asked to leave. I will not be back to this business AND I am sharing this mistreatment with my friends in the area.

Great selection and fair prices. I really appreciate how seriously they’ve taken Covid and the precautions they put in place. I’ve seen a lot of people saying rude things about the owner, and I think it says more about the customers than her. Maybe evaluate your tone and behavior before coming for someone that has every right to run their business how they see fit.

I love this store! They carry quality items and I almost always find what I am looking for. I have resold items with them for nearly 20 years and have been happy to let them do the work and give me the cash.I am dismayed by the number of people who complain about the personality of the owner. She is very straightforward and no-nonsense. They have rules very clearly posted on the door and if you don’t follow them, you should not be surprised to be asked to leave. I think some people interpret Sue’s directness as rudeness. She is not self-effacing or apologetic, but as an adult I can handle that, I can accept feedback and rules and don’t expect everyone to be sugary sweet and pushovers. I appreciate her directness. I appreciate every small business’s need to keep their staff and customers safe in a pandemic. I am disappointed in the way customers are treated at Houseworks. The staff was extremely rude about their 20 min. time limit (I was just arriving and was snapped at that I had 20 mins to shop and then would be asked to leave). The door is blocked with a large rolling rack creating a hazard if there was an emergency. There is a no-one under the age of 16 rule that I missed when entering. My baby was sleeping in a covered car seat. Instead of nicely asking me to leave, I was shouted at that no one under the age of 16 is allowed. I was treated as though I had stolen something. Again, I appreciate a business trying to maintain safety but, if you can’t do it nicely, perhaps you should shut down or switch to appointment-only shopping.

Went to this store with an open mind even after reading the poor reviews. It is exactly as poorly reviewed. A mask is a must(as is everywhere but NO mask NO entry period and she will tell you that), 20 minutes shopping time per person limits, signs all over the front window with rules and only 4 customers in the store at a time which could safely socially distance still with up to 15 ppl but her (Sues) store her rules and she will make it very verbally and rudely clear you know she is the boss and what you are doing wrong with a very poor unprofessional and rough approach. She has 48 tall cart in front of the front door that is on wheels but a fire hazard as it prevents coming and going freely for an emergency with blocking the doorway-should honestly be reported to the fire department. It prevents people from coming and and going out so she can control the door way. The place is dirty and dingy, the items for sale dirty-kind of like the left overs from a bad garage sale and over priced. She had a kitchen aid machine for sale which was filthy and rusty mixer priced at $150 with no other attachments with it-it was nasty. A lot was nasty. A vinyl record was $4 there and $1.8 at Goodwill 1/2 mile away for the same vinyl. Same for other offerings as well price wise. She will hunt you down in the store and tell you your 20 minutes are up and you need to leave even if you have items in your hand-she did this to several customers. They put down the items and left. She told me my time was up and her friend had been in there log before I got in there and another couple and when I mentioned this she said no I was wrong and I needed to leave. I couldnt believe her! I left and will not be back, as 1/2 mile away is Goodwill, Stuff, Salvation Army and Crowded Closet all which are very clean, organized, friendly, reasonably priced, no limits to customers shopping, very friendly and welcoming customer service. Good luck to this store owner as it was a terrible experience and I honestly dont know how she stays in business-the place is a pit. If I could give this place big fat 0 I would and Sue needs to get some lessons on manners and customer service as well as tailoring her approach.

This lady that runs this place is more then rude. You dont even need to say or do anything and she will insult you. I went to the store this morning, waited for her to tell me I could shop. I had to wait for a gentleman she was checking out to leave. I waited and didnt say a word. She then released me to shop. After browsing the store I went to leave. I had to wait by the door for her to grant me permission to exit. There was a rolling cart blocking the doors (fire code violation?) She noticed I was ready to leave, moved the cart, and told me I could exit. Another gentleman was waiting to come in. She followed me out the door. As she was holding the door for the next customer she said, Come on in. Maybe youll have a little more personality than her. I did nothing and said nothing to her to cause this utter rudeness. Other Covid understandable Covid restrictions yes, but not a phone call!Apparently you can’t be on the phone outside their store either because a man interrupted our conversation, to which my DD told him she is not done talking, and then closes the door!We were ready to pull the race card as we were getting ready to write in YELP, and apparently she is NOT the only one they were rude to. Still I question in my mind how many of those people that gave them poor ratings, were of minority in terms of people of color???I had to settle down before posting. To which reminds me I have to still rate them on Yelp!!! If you look them up and you see a 3.8 rating...it is probably because that is how they rate themselves! Its great fun, as I always find nice collectible stuff and nice practical stuff like kitchen stuff, books, dishes, linens, etc. The selection of books is the best of any thrift/consignment store in town. Probably half the stuff in my house came from Houseworks. Ive consigned there numerous times, my stuff always sells, and I make money. Ive never witnessed the staff being mean or rude to customers. Maybe it happens, but Ive never experienced it. I think what might throw some people is that the owner talks in a loud voice and is very direct. I brought my purchases to the counter to pay, and the woman, Sue, picked up one of my purchases, and stated that the wrong tag was placed on it, and even went further to say the tape that was supposedly wrapped around it was missing. When i explained to her that this is exactly how i found it on the shelf, just minutes before, she said she didnt doubt that, but she knows the woman who brought the item in and it had the wrong account number on it or something. I dont think she was being honest. I offered to wait so she could fix the tag, and she said no, I am too busy. I really wanted this item, and was willing to pay more and wait, but she couldnt have cared less, and in fact when i said i could come back tomorrow or next week, she blew me off and changed the subject. I know this business is notorious for treating people badly, but i have always gone out of my way to pay cash and follow their strict rules while in the store, and this is how I got treated for simply shopping there. Trust me, looking through past reviews, Im not the only one who feels this way, and pretty soon, youll be out of business! Constant angry business owners do not belong in business!

I love this place! Where else can you find an entire collection of rolling pins and electrical insulators in the same store. Found pristine Fiestaware dishes for less than 1/2 the price across town at Artifacts. Never had any issue with staff who were friendly and helpful.

This a great thrift/consignment store. It has a lot more kitchen supplies than an average thrift store, so if youre looking for any kitchen tool, youre bound to find it after a few visits. The store is also very organized, and you dont have to rummage through the whole store if youre looking for something specific. Be aware though, they suggest you not use a credit/debit card for purchases under $10, so bring some cash with you.

The woman behind the counter is selective with her courteous service. I noticed an interaction with another customer which left me shaking my head and leaving the store. Items are overpriced but there were some good deals to be found. You just have to look.

I absolutely LOVE this store and all of the staff-management included! She is fair when pricing items for consignment and very organized. The store is well kept and it is easy to see all of the items on the shelves. I love how she dedicates larger space to seasonal items. I have been taking items there for years for consignment and I get PAID every two weeks! They are picky about items they choose to sell, but thats okay by me. I hate looking through junk! I have seen the owner ask people to get off of their phone- and I also know to bring cash if I intend on spending less than $10 dollars... I see nothing wrong with a small business owner asking that a few respectful considerations be made in HER establishment. If you want to do whatever you want...Walmart is down the road.

They tend to have a decent selection. No organization what-so-ever for their books. You can find plenty of worthwhile trinkets if youre willing to search for them.

Ive purchased multiple times from here but when Im not allowed to speak on my own phone in a store, thats an absolute joke. No greeting and first thing Im told is to take my cellphone conversation elsewhere, I def wont be spending money here anymore. Put a sign up that says no cellphones allowed in your store!!

Hit Salvation Army, Goodwill and Crowded Closet 1st. Houseworks owner buys from those places and resales at 4x the price. Get the discount she is getting by hitting those places 1st. You can still get bargains at Houseworks but typically only when things are 1/2 price.

I used to love going, until I went to get a dresser one day- another customer helped bring it to the front (which I really appreciated) and when she rung it, it was $100 not $10 like I thought it was. I apologized and said I didnt want it. The owner then scoffed at me and told me I brought it all the way to the front of the store and now you wont buy it, and this nice gentleman helped I dont know if she thought shaming and embarrasing me would make me change my mind, so I left the store and she came running after me. I had put the wheels in my pocket to try and help with drawers and she acted as if I was trying to steal them. It was an honest mistake. I had heard from others that she was rude but this topped the cake! I will never go back there again.

One of the best consignment shops in the area, Houseworks is locally-owned and holds any number of hidden treasures on any given day. Whether youre looking for furniture, kitchen equipment, hand tools, books, or vintage LPs, Houseworks has it. If you have stuff to sell, setting up an account is easy. Just make sure you call ahead to make sure theyre accepting items on that day.

Housework is a busy place. Selling household goods, electronics, quality furniture and books, LPs. These are second hand and in good condition. They accept consignment. Not a fancy store. Hand written signs indicating with tags indicating specials. If you see something you like haul it up to the counter to have it held or better yet pay for it lug it to your vehicle then go back in to finish shopping. They sell many different items of quality. I enjoy thrifting there. Hope you do too.

We went to homeworks to get our living room furniture. They had some lovely old pieces at a very reasonable price. The service was polite and professional. I will be going back there from time to time.

Sue, the owner of Houseworks continues to amaze me with her rudeness. Every time I decide to give the place another chance, she ticks me off. Its like her personal mission to agitate me...and Im generally a pretty laid back individual. Today I had a bit of time to burn, and I stopped in. I decided to buy two board games for the kids. The total, with tax, was $8.40. She has a sign at the counter asking that customers consider paying with cash for purchases under $10 because it costs them up to $0.44 a transaction. I didnt have cash in my wallet, so I told her Id have to pay with debit, or a check. She doesnt accept checks...ok, fine I get that. She then refused to let me pay with debit. I pointed out the sign says consider paying not MUST PAY. She said, Yes, we ask customers to be considerate of our business and pay cash. She then told me I could go to an ATM and come back while she held the games for me. Um....no thanks...you just told me I was INCONSIDERATE for shopping at you local business. You can keep your $0.44 transaction fee and Ill take my business elsewhere. Good job, Houseworks. Youve proven, again, what I already thought: rude, poorly managed and all-around unpleasant. She could have handled the interaction with me with a bit of politeness and I would have gladly offered to COVER the 44 cent transaction fee, but no.
