I am so disappointed with the owner of this store. I witnessed the owner refusing service to a woman today at the cash register. From my understanding, this business is making money off their consigners but how is that possible when she refuses service to certain individuals? The customer had six items but was told she wasn’t allowed to buy any of them. The customer had to walk out empty handed. I’ve been going to this business for almost 4 years, but they lost a loyal customer today.

Would not shop here based on customers that were refused a sale because owner didnt agree with what they planned on doing with their purchase. Never experienced that one before! 👎👎👎

Small kids section, but everything else is well stocked. Amazing variety! Everything from professional wear to vintage 50’s, to Boho 70’s to athletic wear, to men’s to costumes, etc!Fair prices, friendly staff, and great consignment vibe. I highly recommend!

I have been a customer at Second Act for over a decade. This store provided me with quality clothing, jewelry, shoes, and costumes. The store owner is dedicated and so are the people who work there. My beautiful collection of cashmere sweaters came from this gem of a store. This review is from Sharon.

Hands-down the best clothing consignment store in the area. They have lots and lots of gently used, high-quality womens clothes, shoes, and accessories, a small room of mens clothes and shoes, a few racks of childrens clothes, and a large room of plus-sized womens clothes....not to mention rack after rack of vintage clothing and costumes. Ive been shopping here for 10+ years! Ive scored clothes here that would have been $200 new for $15-30, including a gorgeous pair of lace-up leather boots. Youll find all the best brands here, including unique brands youve never even heard of. The staff is friendly and will help you find whatever youre looking for or put an outfit together. If youre ever shopping at the Riverside Hy-Vee, it is definitely worth swinging by Second Act (tucked on a nearby side street) to see what new stuff they have. Also, at the end of each season, they have really awesome sales. This place is a jewel. I almost dont want to post this review because I want the store all to myself! But seriously, you should go.

Long-time fan of Second Act. They have a great selection of items for work and play and the price is right! They rotate their displays sometimes, but they typically have a section with career clothes and I have found many great pieces for work. I like that they have unique pieces and youll be able to find something no one has, but they also carry a wide variety of respected brand names as well. In ~8 years of shopping there its always pretty busy, but the staff is friendly and courteous no matter whats going on. Well worth a visit.

Today I witnessed the worse customer service by Gloria the cashier. She was rude, argumentative, and disrespectful. She discriminated against this customer and exhibited a clear case of racial profiling. I informed her that her 23 years of nursing experience has nothing to do with her cultural competency. We live in America, you dont treat people like that...I reported her👎 Very disappointed I like this store & shop here very often!

I have been consigning at The Second Act since I moved to Iowa City 4 years ago. I love the friendliness of everyone working there and the personal interest shown to me. I did a large closet over haul when pregnant and took a large percentage of my things to be consigned. My clothes were sold at a fair price and I was happy to receive my balance promptly, it is nice to not have to wait until a certain day of the month to get paid out. When I called to check my balance the owner even remembered the last time I had come in and was excited to hear how I was doing and how my son was. We were greeted with excitement when we came into the store later as well. I was happy to find a couple of gently loved pieces to add to my closet as well. Being a new mom and wanting to be a conscious consumer it is nice to always know I can find quality, gently used, name brand clothes at The Second Act.

For almost 9 years I shopped at The Second Act, while I was in Iowa City earning my PhD. Ive shopped in Miami, Dallas, DC and NYC and The Second Act is one of my favorite places to find a wide selection of stylish, classic, well-cared for clothes -- in my size, 12. This past month, after three years away, I was back in Iowa for a visit and stopped in to the shop. Kelsey and Melissa greeted me by name (!) and helped me to find an arm-load of great pieces. As I was checking out, they checked to see whether any of the clothes I consigned all those years ago had sold. Id forgotten all about those clothes! They found my balance and credited it against my purchase. In addition to all of the wonderful things Ive always known about the team that runs The Second Act, I can add proof that they are mindful and absolutely honest. What a great store!!!

Ive lived in Iowa City for many years and have been going to the store for nearly 20 years. I keep coming back because I almost always find something I like to buy. Its consistently clean merchandise, and if its a little more expensive than Goodwill, the selection is a whole lot better. As for service, Ive never had a problem. I generally just dig for myself but whenever Ive asked for help finding things, I got the help I needed, usually from the owner.

Nice place with nice people. Prices are fair and inventory is diverse. My only complaint is the lack of room to walk around. It makes it awkward at times when two people cant squeeze through their main entrance. My advice would be to re-organize things a bit.

The Second Act is a great place to find vintage and secondhand treasures. Ive found tons of items for everyday wear or Halloween costumes here, at reasonable prices. Melissa is in the family business of thrifting, and she and the other employees run the place with love, care, and great style advice. Visiting the Second Act is a great way to support an established local business in Iowa City AND score your next great find.

I love the Second Act because, buying wise, youre always going to find some really interesting stuff with a diverse inventory. Theres something for everyone (men, women) here, including an assortment of clothing, shoes, accessories, and more. However, the room to walk around in the store is incredibly cramped, so I just wish there were some way to manage space a bit better.Selling stuff here has been hit and miss for me, because sometimes I find that they dont take my clothing but give no concise answer. I take very good care of my clothes, and when I bring them in theyre washed and wrinkle-free. Id prefer to hear a better answer for why its not being accepted.

Cluttered. I found this place claustrophobic to walk through. Piles of clothes on the floor, covering the walls to the ceiling. Some of the clothes looked nice but I couldnt accept the mess of the store to buy anything.

I decided to shop at this store with my daughter and niece today. The owner shadowed me through the store. I was there for about half an hour. My daughter and niece are teenagers. One went to the dressing room to trysome clothes. The employee opened the curtain even though my niece was standing there. I needed to use the ladies room but the owner wouldn’t allow that. We left without buying a thing. Maybe someday she will refuse to allow a patron to use the bathroom and find a mess on her floor. I’ve owned a business for 20 years, I would never treat a customer that way.

Cool clothes, but the “rental” thing is ridiculous, ended up finding many items which I couldnt buy because they were rentals. There was no separate price if you wanted to purchase the rentals either, which really turned me off to this whole store.

Owner openly, loudly professes her uber liberal views. The store is so jam packed with junk (and an occasional find) that I could not escape into a quiet room. When checking out, I asked her why she mixed politics into her business model. She responded as though I were a child...as if I just couldnt understand the lefts point of view. There are quite a few of us overeducated, opinionated shoppers who would rather not hear leftist views or any political rhetoric when shopping. This incident happened over 5 years ago and have since spent disposable income at stores whose employees behave with a sense of decorum.

Store can be a bit crowded and hard to navigate. Prices are more than fair on items, including high end business attire. Post season items outside are a real bargain. Staff can sometimes be hit or miss. Encountered some rude behavior from the owner when newly priced but not for sale items were on the same rack as items that had just been tried on by another shopper. Other service help has been supurb in assisting with finding specific items

I was asked to leave the store today due to the fact that we re-sell some of the items that we buy on Ebay. This discrimination cannot be overlooked. We pay the same price for these items that any other customer pays, we also shop for our children, and for ourselves. In addition we also have loved shopping there and have been extremely positive and polite to the owner and her family while shopping there over the past 18 months. It is unfortunate that I felt like I was a victim of this discrimination. We have spent thousands of dollars over the this period of time in this establishment. This consignment store re-sells items for others and profits from this practice, we do the same, not to mention that we have helped them rotate inventory and helped their customers profit while doing so. I was ashamed today when asked to leave, even after trying to reason with the owner. I would advise anyone that enjoys shopping with The Second Act to reconsider after being treated the way that I was today. I will be filing with the BBB and perhaps an attorney due to this error in judgement. So sorry that this had to happen.

I have shopped at The Second Act as far back as I can rember. I have early memories of browsing their kids and Halloween section when they were located by First Avenue HyVee. The selection of apparel, jewlery, shoes, and costumes is excellent! I can always find something I like and the price reflects what the item is worth. I usually find good vintage belts, Free People goods, North Face fleece, and purses when I spend the afternoon shopping there. Although, I generally dont find shoes (I wear size 11), I know others leave with at least two pairs of shoes. The displays are always unique and reflect the staff. It is obvious those who work there, put time and effort into making the place feel fun. The best time to go is during their Fall and Spring Opening. You will find the best merchandise during their bi-yearly openings; snacking on cookies and fruit while browsing their selection.
