What a disappointment. I used to go to this store as a teenager and it has not aged well. The candy selection is similar to what youd see at any mall. The home-made chocolates were good, but that is less than 1/2 of their inventory. The fruit candies, licorice and saran-wrapped items were bought in bulk. The home-made rice crispy treat was stale and lacked flavor. The brownie was not as good as a box mix from the grocery. Over-priced and not worth the trip. Only giving a 2 because the carmarsh was great. So sad...
This place, along with nearly every other place in Lafayette, is CLOSED ON SUNDAYS!I understand that people need time off, and I understand that businesses don’t have to be open every day, but it seems to me that when the majority of people are off work that would be the time to be open for business. Why should people visit other cities if there is NOTHING TO DO?Also, if you’re business is gonna be closed, in a manner like I just explained, those hours should be clearly marked and posted.I gave three stars because even just the outside of this store is exciting. I’m sure if I would have been able to just walk through the front door, I would have given 5 stars.
It was hot out so we passed on the truffles this time, but the displays were very enticing. We got double scoop old fashioned ice cream in waffle cones and they were delicious. Both employees were friendly and eager to help us. The whole store was clean and organized. I highly recommend! As if thats wasnt enough....I realized after they closed that I left my purse at the table so I was pretty stressed all night. However almost 2 hours before they opened the next day I got a message from an employee that my purse was there. She took the time to find my name on my ID and find me on Facebook. Everything including all of the cash was still in it and Im beyond thankful. Before or after your visit check out the art all over downtown. Amazing
Edit: thanks for the response! We’ll definitely make the trip again once we’re sure of the hours. I appreciate the response and would definitely recommend.Great store, but the hours on their website are wrong! They say theyre open Sundays but they arent. They also say theyre open until 6 and we were there today and theyd close. They need to update their hours because how else are we supposed to figure out when someone will be there?
Mom used to eat lunch here when she was in high school and brought me here for cherry Cokes. Its a longtime family tradition and like a visit to the past with the soda fountain and homemade food and candy.
Amazing customer service. Great selection
Great food and milk shakes. The employees treat you like family and are very friendly.
Great experience and not very crowded. We took the 4:00 pm candy cane tour. It was a very fun and festive experience. We even got to shape our own canes! Candy Cane tours are given on the hour and cost $5 per person. Includes a famous handmade candy cane.We also purchased some candies which were very yummy. Their chocolate is good and not too sweet.
AMAZING PLACE MUST GO TO PLACE IN LAFAYETTE. as soon as I walked in childhood memories hit, great staff, amazing shakes, alot of flavors to choose from, really decent inventory on candies. It is a MUST GO TO when in area and best part the prices are really affordable compared to other candy shops that make there own candies here its priced to sell I paid 3 something for a shake and it tasted like it should cost more like 6 or 7 dollars really affordable place. I will become a regular thats for sure.
McCords does a great job of customizing orders. The candy cane tours are amazing, to see, and amazing to taste. They are always adapting to give the consumer what they are looking for. I especially love their old fashioned cokes, and the lunch menu!
Love the candy cane tours around Christmas time! Love the vibe and the selections of candy! Great place to support local business
The Candy Cane tour is a fantastic and nostalgic experience. The Candy canes are wonderful. Only one of 6 places in the country that still make their candy canes by hand! On 108 year old equipment as well! So worth the trip!
Always good food. Very friendly
Plane old burger i could have goten anywhere.not what i thought it would be.just saying could have been a little better for the price .the candy was great and ice tea but burger isnt all that.steak burger as u call it is a new way to make it sound like its a cut above a burger and its was a regular burger could have got the same burger else where for half the price but good candy
We come here every year for their candy cane tour. This year they are comoley booked up but we went anyway to get candy canes $3 each. They are made of pure cane sugar and bend in your mouth! We also like their sodas which you can add fun flavors to.
Nice family-owned local business. Love the look and the candy cane tours!
Tried the chocolate and caramel..the caramel was definitely old and tasted like fudge. The snapper was also old. Caramel did not pull and the chocolate wasnt tempered. Really awful. People should not sell candy they know has expired. The phosphate was good. Stick to the drinks. The picture you see is of a vanilla caramel wrapped in wax paper. You can see there is no pull and the sugar has crystallized.
The store doesnt require masks to be worn while inside which I dont agree with. The shop employees are unprofessional and were not knowledgable about what was in the candies/what they were AT ALL. One employee didnt know if a wrapped candy was milk or dark chocolate and opened it with her ungloved hand and then proceeded to (attempt) to put it in our candy box. We told her we would prefer an unopened candy. They also took a long time to help us (there were no other customers). The candies, while priced decently, do not taste that great. They taste like truffles you would get from Meijer. To my knowledge, they are not made onsite/homemade.I enjoyed the traditional candy shop vibe/the history of the place, so I added a star. However, besides that, there is no reason to visit. It is a shame it was sold by the original owners a few years ago since I believe the decline in quality is due to that.
I got the candy canes, but the small container of their cocoa mix they were out of. Poor inventory control. They had the large container. Since I was going to buy 2 of the small, I bought 1 large & had to divide it in half for the 2 people i was getting it for. They offered to have 2 small container shipped, but Ive experienced their poor shipping before. So I opted to just divide myself with a poor presentation. My bill was >$40 for 6 candy canes & the cocoa. I think the cocoa is a little pricey for the amount you get. Because of when I was a child & got to see how candy canes were made there i still buy them for my kids & grandkids. I also think $3 each is high for the candy cane size. Nostalgia is what brings me back.
Great locally owned shop with a big selection and a friendly staff! Great old fashioned soda fountain drinks as well!
Amid the Covid Pandemic of 2020, there is a brightness in the art of making candy canes. The aroma of peppermint was present when pouring, working, and pulling the candy, which would soon become your own personal candy cane. Thank you for sharing the history of the candy cane, and for keeping the Christmas spirit alive!
McCord’s Candies is wonderful and a great place to take the family. They were very accommodating and the food is wonderful. Thank you for the wonderful time today.
Went there for lunch. Food and people were amazing! Their rootbeer and vanilla coke are also good. I will definitely be returning.
What an awesome candy shop!! The environment is so fun. Everything tastes absolutely amazing, fresh and homemade. I recently placed an online order and the website was so easy to use. The delivery time was exceptional as well. The staff is so friendly. I cant wait to go back to Mccords Candies!
Good customer service
We did the candy cane tour and my boys had so many questions and we had lots of fun hearing the answers!
It was packed. The help was great! Wonderful place.
My first time, loved it!
The grilled cheese is always a favorite with us. I tried the soft pretzel and cheese and it was SO good. Beautiful atmosphere. I love the candies, but they dont make all of them in house. Server and candy kid both provided great customer service. The cherry coke is delicious and high quality. They have sandwiches and salads but the food is limited and most is more like snacks.
It was so fun to see how candy canes were made. Also, all the employees were so nice
Spent $40 on 12 candy canes only to get home & have 7 of them broken. I realize the candy canes are very soft & break easily, but over half of them were broken. Also, very disappointed in how the owner of the store handled the situation.Response: I did contact the owner privately with no response. After I posted a review on Facebook, her response was Im sorry you wont be visiting my store anymore. Then she deleted the review & blocked me on Facebook. The situation was rudely handled, in my opinion. I was mildly under the assumption that she would offer to replace at least a few of the candy canes since they cost so much money in the first place, which she did not.
Annual trip to McCords for their famous candy cane tour. For $3/person, you cant beat it. You get to see the process from start to finish, and you get to make your own candy cane at the end. These are popular and do tend to get crowded, so plan accordingly. However, its one of the many great things to do in Lafayette while contributing to #shoplocal. One thing to note, they dont take credit card unless you spend more than $5.
I went for their Christmas candy canes, which have been hand-made in-store for over 100 years! Im so glad we have this candy store in Lafayette!
Fun quick visit...tour was money well spent.
Great shakes and a good place to get a quick lunch
The strawberry malt was amazing and the kids love this place!!
Awesome service. Great food and candy!!
So much more than just candy. They have milkshakes and food to order whats little tables in the back and some tables upstairs. Lots of delicious looking chocolate and scoops of yummy ice cream.
Good food,drinks, and ice cream
Great candy and the old style soft drinks are so smooth you wont believe it.
The new owners have redecorated this place so it seems more clean, streamlined, and modern. But some things have gone downhill since new owners.. the grilled cheese (tough, fancy bread and did they put garlic in the butter? Who wants to go back to work after that?) and the deviled eggs (used to be so fresh and sweet, now... gas stations do better) to name a few. Its worth a first stop but Im starting to think Im reaching my last. Thankfully the vanilla cokes cant disappoint.
This place has really gone down hill over the years. The kids working here were fine (which is why I’m giving 2 stars instead of 1) but the adult women were unpleasant. They were loud and rude with customers purchasing candy (I was considering getting some but was too scared of the lady behind the counter that I didn’t.) I was there for “lunch”, and heard another woman yell, yes YELL at the customers waiting for a candy cane tour that they needed to pay first. They definitely came across as only being about the money. My food and drink were both pretty gross. The coke was flat and the nachos were served with jalapeños that looked about two years old. My grandmother got a ham salad sandwich “toasted” which was cold. Halfway through our meal a woman went around pushing chairs into tables loudly and just seemed angry for some reason, we felt inclined to leave at this point. I used to enjoy coming in to visit but probably won’t be back again. I felt very unwelcome.
Childhood memories make Mccords Legendary
I love mccord candies
Wow the best Carmel corn in candy canes ever
They have absolutely the best homemade peppermint candy canes south of the North Pole.Actually everything in the store that I’ve tried is awesome. This place is a year-round tradition for our family.
Superb old fashioned milk shakes, great service and order the vanilla milk shake with old fashioned ice cream with a fresh brownie mix in. Incredible. A must to visit for a refreshing sundae, ice cream cone or milkshakes. Well be back!
Great historic candy shop.
For years upon years, McCords has served Lafayette with the best possible ideas of sweet tooth sensations. Homemade candy canes, excellent chocolate, fantastic handmade sodas. If it could be made at a traditional candy store, McCords will have it.A bit on the pricey side though (in regards to candies, but that is expected for handmade sugar products). Overall, excellent.
Havent been there in a long time. We were looking for something for my granddaughters 12th birthday. We found everything we needed and more everything was great.
Neat old fashioned soda shop. Excellent and friendly service. The caramel cappuccino milkshake is absolutely delicious!
Large selection of candy, sweets and popcorn too. Vintage store with easy access to the counters. Good variety of classic candies like Cow Tails, chocolate stars, wax bottles etc.
Just made candy canes and it was amazing... Nostalgic at its absolute best
Despite the deplorable decor that looks like a hipster caricature of an old fashioned soda shop, the food is pretty good, so long as what you want is in stock. The candies are, again, acceptable although the quality is no longer what it once was. Pretty good selection of old style shakes and sodas although the quality varies. Overall its an ok experience but disappointing if youre hoping for a genuine soda shop nostalgia trip.
Great selections, delicious taste! I️ also have memories of going here with my grandma as a kid and recognized it when walking by now as a university student. I️ remember her loving the milkshakes!
The best true old fashioned vanilla Coke around & the wide variety of homemade chocoaltes is a chocolate lovers dream come true!
Such a cute candy store! Hand made candies everyday and are delicious! Not to mention if you go in December you can take a candy cane making tour. Where they hand make and roll candy canes! Its so much fun for all ages and great for kids!
This candy store is historical. As a family we signed up to watch the demonstration of how they make candy canes. They are one of only a dozen or so candy stores that still make their candy canes in the traditional fashion.
Friendly staff saw them make candy canes very interesting. Great place.
Great people and great vibe. Came in for lunch, Deviled eggs and grilled cheese ;) it was great and so were the chocolates. At a wedding later that night and the venue did not have coffee so I ran over to McCord’s and they saved the day!!!! Cannot say thank you enough.
Love this place. Old school soda shop fare. Make their own candies, too.
They have the BEST vanilla coke ever !!!
I had posted a 4-star review about 2 years ago, but had to come back and update it --- after changing owners, theyve done a lot of modernizing in the shop and taken their service to a higher level. I wish they were open later on Saturdays so I could have more of this goodness! Great local shop.
Candy is delicious. Vanilla cokes are also very yummy!
Delicious custom sodas at reasonable prices. Plenty of room to sit and enjoy the cute decor.
A bit expensive but still love the nostalgic feel and treats you get there. Their candy canes and fountain drinks are the best!
Awesome selection and its soooo good! Super friendly staff too! We love going to McCords!
Went to the candy cane tour today. It was so cool.
Best candy canes ever. Wonderful array of truffles and other chocolates. Also, really good sugar-free chocolates.
Went to the candy cane making tour. Great for kids.
Loved it as a kid. Its much different today. Not as much, not as good.
Delicious chocolate & loved watching them make candy canes!
Great sodas, yummy candies. I stick to getting sweet treats from this place and avoid the lunches. Make sure to get a candy cane around Christmas time.
The best home made candy canes.
This was our first time in and we were extremely disappointed! Which was sad because the place caught our attention and it looked like a great family spot. They were out of EVERYTHING. It was not busy at all during our visit. We came in on a Saturday afternoon. No soup, no chips, no breakfast sandwiches, even though the menu clearly stated, “breakfast served all day.” Our milkshake was served runny, no bananas for a banana split (the one staff said they didn’t even know how to make a banana split) and the green river tasted like plain soda water. The ice cream was OVER frozen, the staff could barely scoop it out and the ice cream had ice crystals in it when we ate it.The staff made us feel that we were an imposition because we tried to order off the menu. At no point was our visit a good experience. What a shame!
Love the old fashion look! Fun place to visit, in downtown Lafayette!
Nice place for candy not so much for food
Great traditional candy
Havent had the chance to go on a tour yet but the food and candy is great, especially for the price
LOVE McCords candy canes, but they didnt have any this year and we stopped in multiple times to try to get some. It makes me very sad. Having these candy canes in our stockings growing up was a tradition I was looking forward to carrying on with my own children. Sadly that didnt happen. They had small bags of pieces, but ehhh not what we were expecting.
I was there last week this place has gone down hill no candy canes?? Really the only thing they had was pieces but....... They are horrible and over priced $16 for two small bags we would have been ok with the price but they are totally different this is sad my wife loved them but not so much anymore everything must come to an end right!!!!
A Downtown Lafayette Tradition with a recent facelift. New owners have painted and the city put in new sidewalks. Looking nice. Great milkshakes, flavored drinks, and chocolates!!
Good ice cream and lot of chocolates to choose from. Fun old time atmosphere. Pretty expensive though.
I was very dissapointed with my experience here. The people at the counter were disinterested in helping us and did not organize orders and checkouts very effectively. I asked about a type of candy, in a completely sealed bag, and ordered 4 bags. When I tried them it was something completely different than what I thought they were, so I called immediately to ask if they could exchange the unopened 3 bags for something else. After talking to three employees, they were very rude and patronizing when telling us they would not exchange them. Needless to say, I dont recommend doing business with McCords.
Candy Cane tour is fun and interesting. And involves candy. So, winning!!
Handmade candy canes. Great egg salad. Old fashioned soda fountain.
Great candy and a delicious phosphate. Incredibly rude service. Specifically the middle aged woman with the arm tattoo. I wont be going back.
I work downtown Lafayette and McCords is in walking distance which is very nice. I especially like coming here for fall/winter holidays. However the staff is never really polite and I have yet to see ANY staff member smile. Id say I visit McCords at least 2-5 times a month for the past 2-3 years and its just for the candy/Vanilla Cokes. Would be nice to see someone smile in such a lovely personable place-
This place needs a visit from Gordon Ramsey. I would rather eat lunch at a gas station. The place seriously needs to focus on improving the quality of their products. Or just focus on candy and forget about lunch.
Great candy store with good cokes.
Great tuna salad and Chicken salad!
What a happy place to grab a good valued sandwich made on the spot. I stop in a couple times a month for a sandwich, or treat myself to a vanilla Coke now and then. MY KIDS love to pop in on MLK day or other days out of school. Its an honest lunch and candy counter and it might not be fabulous it is our citys little sweet icon. Stop in without high expectations, and you will find this place will sneak into your heart.Keeping it real... I still go there, Vanilla Coke, and a sandwich FAST! when I dont have time for the Brew-Co
The staff is great! Although the sweets are better!
I have been going to Mccords since I was a baby. It was my favorite place in the world. It was so good that when we moved in 2011 to Vegas I would have people ship their chocolate covered marshmallows to me and their truffles. Since the new owners have taken over the quality of their candy has gone down. Its very upsetting how my favortie place could be ruined overnight. I wish the old owners would come back to show the new owners a thing or two about making candy and how to treat their customers.
Good educational experience for candy making. Nice staff
