This is a little village with guides (such as a true Indian Chief) of a tribe, native to Acadiana. There is a theatre, where you can watch a short film about the founding of the area and see the names of some of the first people to immigrate here. There is also; canoe rentals, a real blacksmith, a great gift shop and a wonderful little restaurant that stays open until 2pm and serves daily lunch specials. Its a great day trip!
We enjoy going to places like this where we can stroll around seeing and reading the history of an area. But what made this visit special was the man in the schoolhouse sharing his accordian music and his families history and the man at the church with a detailed description of the evolution of the terms cajun and creole. The grounds were a wonderful mix of well-kept wildness, homestead gardens, cultivated flower beds, and bayou. The paths all under huge shade trees. The Vermilionville Living History Museum and Park has many original homes and buildings built near present-day Lafayette, Louisiana; there are a few reproduction buildings as well. We went on a cool day, after some heavy rain had fallen in the area. It was not crowded at all, in fact at times it seemed we were the only ones there. Many buildings were open but a few were closed. The only interpreters were two brothers at the Blacksmith shop. They told much about the history of the area, and the importance of metal working to the early settlers. We learned about the difference between Cajun and Creole, although during our stay in Louisiana we heard a different definition from just about everyone who talked about it! The buildings frequently had informational panels with text and photos describing life in Vermilionville, building materials, kitchen equipment, working tools, toys and games. Cutaways showed the wall constructed of mud, moss, and cypress wood. Gardens outside of the homes contained flowers, vegetables, and herbs for flavoring and for medicinal purposes. We ate at the restaurant on-site and the meal was delicious - this was no sandwich and chips kind of place!
I visited the place in august 2021, as part of a tour à the Cajun country. You can’t visit the Cajun country without going there. The staff was speaking a little Cajun French and told us about the Cajun history and culture, and gave is the best tip ever on where to listen to live music in Lafayette. I would have missed a lot without this!
Ive toured the living history museum grounds before, and enjoyed the activities, but this most recent visit was to see a concert in their dance hall. Its a pretty facility built of wood, which allows for great acoustics.
I visited on a Sunday so a lot of the buildings were void of staff--I would recommend going another day if youre inquisitive. On the other hand, there wasnt a lot of people there, and maybe it was due to it being a Sunday. The historian in the 4-room building adjacent to the restaurant was very informative. The buildings were neat to look at with the recreations of how they would have looked in the 1800s. Kid friendly.
Vermillionville in Lafayette is an extensive historic village with buildings dating back to colonial times. The visit is made significantly more lively by having staff (mostly somewhat senior) dressed up in historic costume and willing to talk about what they were doing in their role. Also very nice that there was southern music being performed in a larger farmhouse. You can also eat comfort food in the associated restaurant. Very nice way to kill some time in Lafayette.
When we have spay day for cats at SPAY Nation in Lafayette..I drive to this park and enjoy nature for a few hours.
Its a big place, my rotary club holds luncheons there. It makes me feel more sophisticated that way there, and that its called a luncheon. I mean its just lunch, but its more sophisticated. Makes me sound smarter, and it makes me sound like I make more money than I do. I know Im paying for your buck that place is the best place to eat in town its delicious and theyve reasonably priced our luncheon. Luncheon
One of the better historical villages that Ive visited. There is a very interesting collection of houses and such. The people who work there are fascinating to talk to, especially the blacksmith. They are located next to some swampy water and it was also fun to watch the birds. Some of the buildings are air-conditioned, which made a nice break in the heat.
Great historical site with lots of friendly and knowledgeable staff. Stu stayed to talk with us half an hour past closing just to share fascinating information. We went back the next day because we had such a lovely time. Lovely people and local music, plus the restaurant was to die for.
Truly enjoyed the Vermilionville Historic Village. You will miss out if you dont take the time to engage with the reenactors. They are absolutely amazing people. Ask Kevin, the gentleman in the schoolhouse to sing and play his accordion. Youll be amazed at the many historical styles hes able to play. Austin, the blacksmith is like your favorite history professor. His stories captivated my family for two hours! His smithing skills were excellent, too. Mike tends to the animals and has fun stories about his hennie. Ask him, if you dont know already what one is. Chief, the gentleman in a coonskin cap, was doing some interesting bead work. The historic building are nice to see but its the people who make it amazing. And we cant leave out the food. Dont leave without trying the chicken and sausage gumbo. You will thank me for the recommendation.
The magic in the air here is rich and old. The muddy waters of the Vermillion River are haunting and peaceful. There is plenty of parking here and you can quickly escape the city and feel transported to the bayou. I would recommend taking a picnic lunch and sit outside enjoying this peaceful setting. A very cool place worth visiting.
My family and I loved this place! We learned a lot and enjoyed our time in the beautiful scenery. Everyone we talked to along the tour was very Informative and great with my autistic nephew. Would definitely recommend a visit here if youre in the area. We went at the beginning of March and the weather was amazing.
Getting to walk through the village and talk to the historians was a interesting. We used the ferry to cross the pond. They also had a live band playing when we arrived. The ladies in the gift shop were very friendly and provided excellent service.
Collection of homes, school, church, and forge from late 1700 to 1900. They have people in nearly every house. Small nature/weather museum. Really neat and nicely maintained. Small ferry for people to use themselves.oops. almost forgot. Also a very friendly donkey...the sheep think their to good to be petted.
Interacting with the guides was the highlight. They are doing it out of love. you hear the passion in their voice when they are talking about Louisiana s history. Honestly I was impressed by the team. Great Job keeping the village alive.
The mac and cheese was great but fried chicken to brown and spicy..cant wait to see Christmas lights
The bayou Vermillion district opened the Vermillion ville living history museum. Vermilionville sits on a beautiful tree covered 23 acre sit on the banks of bayou Vermillion with different attraction including stored original homes with costume artisan, food, culture, music, architecture. Really nice place to bring your child and hangout with your friends.this place has historical background and they continuing till today..amazing place, knowledgeable stuff and welcoming environment.
Its like the movie,It brings history back alive again!
This place was wonderful. We learned quite a bit about Louisiana history. There is plenty to read but most of our information came from talking with the people there. With the exception of two ladies, everyone there seemed to want to engage and tell us about the houses, the people, and give us tons of background information. We really enjoyed ourselves!
Many visits through the years for special events, entertaining visitors, or passing the time. Its a wonderful place to learn about the Cajun heritage, customs, music, food, & lifestyle.
We had an amazing time! Everyone working there is very knowledgeable, informative and they make you feel like youre home. There is so much to see and learn. The food was wonderful! Even my incredibly picky husband thoroughly enjoyed the bbq and the gumbo was perfect!
Visited here for the Blackpot Festival. This was a great event. Some awesome cooking and even better music. If youve never been ( like us ) its well worth a visit. We had an epic time here. Excuse my other half shes not right in the head.
I learned so much from going to Vermillion ville!! It really was something spéciale😁💜
Awesome way to spend a day learning about history! The staff is very friendly all around. They were very informative and they seemed genuinely excited to share their information. Thanks for the hospitality! Shawn and family from Houston.
Enjoyed our visit on Sun May 2, 2021. Live music was fantastic ! food at the cafe was good. But I have a concern re the condition of the 3 sheep on the property. They appeared to be very uncomfortable with the amount of thick thick wool (unsheared) in the heat.
The historians who work here are very knowledgeable and do their best to out you in the spirit of early Cajun life.
A super cool way to spend an afternoon. It was neat looking at the unique and diverse history of the area. Several helpful people in historic costume dress with knowledge and expertise in different aspects of traditional Cajun life. Well-kept and informative exhibits spanning more than a century. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and they had a Zydeco jamboree going on that was awesome - my dad says he could have stayed all day listening!
We had originally planned to visit the LARC Acadian Village, which represents life in the early 1800s, but it was closed on Sundays. Came here instead, and were so happy we did. This village represents life in the late 1800s and gives a fantastic insight into the lives of the people back then. What made this experience perfect were the interactive guides hiding in some of the houses. All were dressed in period clothing and shared amazing stories and histories. I could have sat with the accordian player for hours. We then had Sunday brunch buffet at the on site restaurant and the food was amazing. Highly recommend a visit.
Lovely quaint village.Lunch was delicious. Many hand made items in the gift shop. Cant wait to go back and explore more of the village.
Wonderful Acadian/Cajun history. Great admission price and delicious restaurant on site.
Second visit to this amazing village! Our tour guide lead us through the story of the Acadians history. Everyone in our group loved it!
Nice step back in time! Loved to see the artisans at work!
Beautiful historic village. Nice shade trees, Concrete walkways, tons of history.
Had a wonderful time touring the property!
Went for the Courir de Mardi Gras the other day; a beautiful property and a splendid event! Great way to visit for $5
Great little Acadian museum
Grab yourself a $3 Abita on tap and enjoy live music and dancing Sunday afternoons.
I had not been to Vermillionville since I was a child. I had a chance to go recently and was amazed by the quality of the grounds and authentic, knowledgeable staff. I learned so much while I was there and I am a lifelong native of LA. Of note is the way often marginalized cultures are highlighted like the Senegalese connection. The restaurant buffett served truly local food and did it right. Red beans and rice, chicken and sausage gumbo. I had a chance to try all the desserts and none disappointed. Regret I didnt get pictures of the food.
Had a great time, loved the buffet and the friendly service !
Very nice exhibits. Excellent staff. Nice informative craftsmen.
This can be a little hard to find but well worth the effort because there are so many neat things to do. The replica buildings restaurant and shops are all fun.
Worth the money, the village has many houses, several animations. And you can also have some concerts.
A well-preserved window to the past of Louisiana
Very nice place. Lot of houses, culture and stuff to learn. There is several disguised people around the park giving you some context. Only 10$/adult
Their Sunday buffet is a little disappointing but the staff was attentive. I think they are short on kitchen staff, the food was ok
A living Cajun, Creole and Native American history
Fun day of history & fresh air!
Nice park! Catering for the event was not representative of area cusine and somewhat rude.
Very interesting. Lots to take in and very nice people.
If you like historical information this is a good place to go.
Authentic Cajun Village on beautiful grounds. Several homes on the property with well informed docents happily sharing their knowledge of life when the Acadien people settled in Louisiana!
Very authentic reproduction of a historic Cajun village.
A great place to learn about regional history and culture. Many period homes, community buildings, artifacts and even a working rope ferry you can pull across a bit of water. Living history guides, a small restaurant and gift shop help round out the experience.
Nice historical outdoor museum depicting life in Acadiana in the past. Really nice and informative staff dressed in period outfits. Definitely worth a stop if youre in Lafayette.
They have a Cajun Restaurant thats really great!!! (La Cuisine De Maman) Give them a try, I promise you wont be disappointed. Great family place or just a quick lunch.
La Cuisine de Mamam is possible one of the best little secrets of Lafayette. This little cafe in Vermilionville has some of the best gumbo and Ive never been disappointed with any of the food!
If you are looking for Louisiana roots this is the place!!!! Look for the 200 year old loom.
We didnt take the boat tour, but I loved walking through the village, seeing the artifacts, and talking to the artisans spinning and weaving, etc. There are knowledgeable staff and interesting presentations on the history of the area.
Awesome place we loved it.
Gumbo....so good!!! Awesome staff.
This was so much fun! I loved the ferry! The people are all dressed up and full of information!
Learning the history of this place is facilitating. The resturant is very good too. Prices are very reasonable.
Very interesting to explore.
Nice historical place to visit.
Wonderful place. Take time to stroll through.
You can learn quite a lot here. Very interesting and very beautiful
Wonderful place my husband and I really enjoyed it. Very educational good for children aswell.
I advise you to visit. To learn the history and culture of the people in the Attakapos region provided the knowledge and understanding of the historical events.
I absolutely love this place! Definitely a walk through the past. I went with family and we had a blast, so interesting learning about the lives of Acadians. The walk through town is fascinating in many ways from the home structure, to the furniture inside the homes, and even the plants outside of the homes. Definitely a great place to visit if into history or if you like the walk through experiences.
Where Lafayette began. The go-to place to learn about the history and unique culture of the Cajun/Acadian people.
Was very interesting and liked the presenters that were there. Needed a few more interpreters.
It was neat seeing the old houses turned into what they were back in the days. The school house, church, and blacksmith were my favorite. The live band was the best part of all!
Very interesting place, learn history of Acadian people
Enjoyed very much so much history there
Loved this place!
We had an excellent visit yesterday. We spent the entire day there. The re-enactors are very knowledgeable and interesting. We learned a lot about Louisianas culture and history at large and also got deep insights about the mississippi flood issues by discussing with them. The village houses are well displayed and furnished. Last but not least, the on-site restaurant is both delicious and amazingly inexpensive. A must-do visit!
Great Food excellent prices
Relaxing experience, very informative. Took the whole family, and we enjoyed ourselves so much. The young lady at the entrance was so nice, and the artisans/historians inside were so nice and took a real interest in teaching you about the Louisiana culture. I recommend it!
This is a great piece of history with excellent passion and detail from the guides!
Love this place and plan to go more often. I love all the hard work they do to share the history of our state and the culture of the cajuns. Its amazing. they often have so many wonderful demonstrations and events also. I would recommend it to everyone. Worth a few hours drive also!!!
I absolutely loved this place and will definitely be going back. The historical accuracy is amazing. I learned so much in the short amount of time I was there. It is a fun place to take the family.
A good place to go and learn
Nice place with local history. Good little tour.
Took a river tour, it was perfect. Great way to pass a good time! Historic village, watershed exibit, and restaurant were all excellent too.
Romantic place, lots of history and make sure you try the gumbo.
So much fun.
Such rich culture and history.
Very cool place and the interpreters are very knowledgeable!
Eat here with my Rotary group. The staff is always very helpful, and the decor is entertaining.
