Well stocked if not over stocked store on two levels with no obvious elevator. Plenty of older titles you wont find on Amazon as well as newer stuff. It is a downtown location so parking is on-street and you may need to walk a bit. Inside the isles have overstock in most isles so navigation for those in wheelchairs or using walkers could be a challenge, no obvious elevator. Prices arent out of line but current titles seem to be at full cover price. A place to go if you are looking for put of print or older titles.
Slack jawed. I bought what I thought was all three Pierre the Detective Maze books for my son’s birthday. Unfortunately, I accidentally bought one as a duplicate. Went back to the store a little more than a week later thinking they’d happily make the exchange. The clerk told me they had a “no return” policy. That I might have read the book and simply be returning it. That they weren’t “a library”. How incredibly rude. I wanted to buy local. But I’ll just give the duplicate to Goodwill and get it on Amazon for three dollars less.
Fabulous place. Its bigger on the inside, with a very wide selection and a pleasant atmosphere. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
Literally one of the best stocked, coolest, coziest bookstores Ive been to in awhile. Bibliophiles who dream of a library wallpapered in novels, floor to ceiling, wall to wall are actually thinking of this place. Complete with huge comfy chair in the center of stacks of novels this store boasts an amazing selection from contemporary to antiquities, all genres and some actual pretty valuable and sought-after tomes as well. Smells amazing and my only complaint was that I couldnt stay longer to rifle through their catalogue thoroughly enough. Definitely on my short list of favorite stops in the St. Louis area. A book-lovers paradise.
Fantastic. Cat at the front desk was helpful, respectful, and cool. Great vibe there.
The coziest place in town to discover your next favorite book! Packed to the gills with a staggering variety of old, new, and rare books, this store boasts tons of corners to curl up and read, friendly staff, and the ability to locate nearly any book you can think of, from best sellers to rare out-of-print beauties. The staff pick shelf always has something interesting to offer, and new releases arrive almost daily. Whether you’re passing through or have lived here your whole life, this is a must-see spot!
Great fun! The rare book cases are worth a look, and the store offers a nice mix of new and used books.
Wonderful collection; so many oddities.
I love to visit here and spend an afternoon
Transports you into every bookworms dream library. 10/10 would recommend. PSA: Rolling Ladder Included!
Really great store. Worth a look.
Great little independent bookstore.
The Book House WILL be a go to for myself for years to come! Michelle was absolutely beyond stellar! Her service is top notch for any industry, and was super prompt in processing my online order. Another plus, it shipped next day and arrived a week earlier than expected😊I purchased 2 Books from The Book House online (had actually found them on Abebooks). I found a very rare book I have personally been seeking there “Prosperity Through Thought Force” written in 1907. They had the ORIGINAL copy there in almost PERFECT condition 😯All I can say is keep up the awesomeness and Michelle you ARE THE BEST!
I love this bookstore, so many great nee and used books here, on pretty much any topic imaginable. Its a lot bigger inside than it seems!
Awesome book store...tons of selections and very helpful. One of my favorite places!
Coolest bookstore in town
Great bookstore and good service
Wonderful store. Loved it.
Prices are ridiculous. I guess they really don’t want to sell them.
Wow. Just, wow... the best bookstore I have ever been to, and Ive been to many. I have a personal library, at home. I will stop in, and pick up a few 1st additions before returning to my home state of Florida! The books are reasonably priced and well organized, by subject. In the basement or down the stairs, are couches, recliners, and a friendly cat, and walls of books. My sister and I stopped in, for a sec, and left three hours later! Beautiful place. If ever in St. Louis, MO stop by The Book House as it will be an experience that will not only be the best of your time but also a great way to relax with a good book, on a couch, deciding if you should purchase the philosophy of politics printed in 1890! 😁
I wanted to love this store. It was beautiful and cozy. I love the cat Leo. However, the back of the store reeked of cat urine. I have cats at home and I know that scent anywhere. It was overwhelming and I immediately was compelled to leave the store. Again, the shop itself is adorable but the scent of cat pee will keep me from coming back.
Wonderful independent bookstore
Always an adventure to find something new to read here!
This is seriously one of the coolest places Ive ever been. I could stay here for hours! Love the atmosphere. Wish I would have had more time to check out the old old books they have locked up in the glass cases. They look so cool!! Ill be back another day when I have more time! Definitely recommend everyone check it out at least once!
The Book House is one of the coolest locations in St. Louis. It feels like its a library out of a movie with its ceiling high bookcases with sliding ladders and piles of books. Plus it has a huge variety so whether you are an avid or casual reader it has something for everyone.
This is my favorite book store, I think that moor people need to come here and buy stuff.
Wonderful staff. I had so many questions about the books I was looking for and they took their time to help me out. They engaged my kids and were so friendly. The atmosphere is just great. I really hope to visit more often now that we live in Maplewood.
With two floors of floor-to-ceiling stacks of books, this shop has all sorts of literary treasures. While it does take effort to browse the massive stacks, theyre well sorted into categories, and the avid reader is as likely to find a recent delight as to come away with a delicious bargain. Brick-and-mortar book stores like The Book House are a gem in our community & deserve book lovers enthusiastic support.
Great cozy place for booklovers! If Michelle doesnt have a book in the store she will order it for you. Also its so much fun to look through the old books she has collected. Brings back memories!
This is one of my favorite book stores. It is a mom-and-pop bookstore and the people who run it are very very nice and they have a very large selection of books from all types of genres. They have an upstairs in the downstairs in a quiet area to read they also have a discounted value book been downstairs.
Im glad the Independent Book Store Day passport sent me here as I had never been! What an algebraic little spot with a ton of books! Stacks on stacks on stacks of books to peruse and find the perfect old book I never knew I needed! Go there and spend an hour looking through all the great books!
This place was fun to visit. There are a ton of books, including antique ones that were fun to browse through. The prices were questionable. Found a book I wanted with a sticker tag of 9.99. The cover price that was still visible, was 7.99. Most books had been written in with a price and the word new, which makes the book not new. Cute story, just not budget friendly.
They had both of the books I have been looking for!! They were super friendly as well! Thanks Book House STL✊🏾
Great place to find interesting and rare books
Wonderful people and a classic old school book store. If you need to order something they are super friendly and communicate well.
Definitely spent hours there today, plus had a lovely conversation with two of the folks who worked there. I think that alone is worth spending the full price of a book (instead of, say... getting a deal or something on a certain online store). Plus: soooo many books! If you are in the least bit obsessed with books on a level higher than average youll adore this place. Support your local bookstore! :)
Really torn up about The Book House now. 😭My favorite used book store in the city. Theyre on the pricey end for used books, but what they have is in good condition. I enjoy the environment and spending time searching through the stacks. Ive been going to this store for a few years, and always find out of print books to add to my collection or that paperback that Ive been missing.Recently, though, the store obtained a new cat. I love cats, but am awfully allergic to them. On top of that, the litter box is kept by the Sci-Fi and Literature section, my favorite part of the store. Now the entire area smells like a litter box, and it seems that the cat is fed mostly wet food and treats. This creates an awful cat bouquet that permeated the paper of the book I had been searching for. This is an unhealthy diet that increases the rate of poos, makes it liquidy, and reek to high hell. I put the book back and left for Half Price Books. 😭 Please clean the box more frequently, or swap foods, or litter, or something because Im going to miss this store on my routine!
Full of books of every kind from wall to wall, floor to ceiling. A great selection of vintage/antique books. The store is perfectly chaotic. Something in here for everyone
Awesome local place
Great vibe. Loved the great selection, diffently a treasure trove of new and used books. Felt their prices were on the high side, especially after finding out used books are donated.
Amazing selection, knowledgeable staff. Prices are above average for a second hand bookstore.
Not to bad, a bit pricey for discounted books. Visually can be overwhelming, but if you are a browser/buyer youll be fine. Ton of selections, enjoy!
A nice book shop with a down to earth vibe. It has an extensive selection. I love browsing the employees picks.
Awesome little bookstore with lots of old and rare books and more current stuff.
Get most of my books from here. Great selection and knowledge staff to help you out.
Wonderful charming atmosphere, tons of books on nearly any subject you can imagine. Comfortable seats.
I love the Book House! All kinds of interesting books. I could spend DAYS in there! Support local businesses!
Neat little place completely covered in books.
Me and a friend came here and were blown away by how treacherous this place was.- We kept finding books with no price on them and couldnt find an employee whatsoever. We were here for 20ish minutes and asked 5 random strangers if they were employess with no luck.- Downstairs there was a meeting in the center of all the aisles with 6 people at a table woth computers. This gathering that seemed sponsored by the bookstore blocked off several aisles of books, making most of the downstairs a disaster to navigate.- All books seem slightly overpriced for what they are. Books being sold for sticker price at questionable condition. We were at the point where we were just poking fun at books such as a 350+ Crochet Designs book with a torn cover from 2008 that was being sold for sticker price at 23$.Overall a hilarious experience and an embarassment by design.
My mom and I ended up here again even though I knew the book prices were outrageous. I got a single new book that was supposed to be $15.95. I checked out and went home and noticed a few days later the bookhouse had charged my card over $28. I returned to the store for a refund and did not see the man who sold me the book. A lady there told me the receipt said I had bought two books and all sales are final after 48 hours. Ive been around, never in my life have I found a more expensive bookstore. Youd think they would be doing well enough to at least be honest. These people have no idea how to run a store properly and not over charge people for books that are already overpriced.
Great people
Sounds like an older unhappy female answers the phone, maybe the owner but very rude and has no customer service or professional etiquette. I just asked if they carried a certain type of Christian book. Considering it is a 40 minute drive for me to get there, I asked her if she would have someone check while I was on the phone. Wow! she snapped for no good reason and told me I have a line of people standing in front of me, Im not gonna check and no one else will either and youre just gonna have to come in like everyone else and dig for yourself. She really sounded like an old white racist AND maybe she doesnt like Christians either! How about you read the book Were now living in the 20th century 101! Disrespecting people just because you think you can will not be tolerated!! You dig for it!!
A little hard to find something specific, but great variety.
Great place to find specialist books and a range of general fiction.
Fantastic selection of new and used books!
This is a great place for book lovers!!!
Highly overpricedVery very pretentious.Owner totally crabby and rude.
Insane amount of books. If you cant find something here you dont want, youre doing something wrong.
A little over priced for donated books and unorganized.
Cute little store!
Had exactly what I needed.
Way too expensive and the books are all over the floor.
Very helpful!
So many books!!! so few shelves.
My 9 year old granddaughter wants to live her.
Everything that you can imagine..
Unique
An incredible bazaar! Nice prices! A real bookstore worthy of the name. It may not find what we came to look for but we will probably leave with two or three essential books whose existence we did not know ....
