One day at work I mentioned that Ive never had fried green tomatoes and always wanted to try them. My coworker told me I needed to go to Hidden Manna to get true authentic southern fried green tomatoes. She was right - they were great and came with a yummy spicy sauce on the side. For our main courses, my husband chose fried fish and grits, I chose shrimp and grits, and my daughter chose Cajun macaroni and cheese with shrimp. We were able to choose our spice level with each dish which was nice, since my daughter likes mild, I prefer medium, and my husband is a set me on fire please. person. We all loved our meals (and each others) and the portions were so generous that we all brought half of our food home. We also wanted to save room for dessert! Our server recommended the key lime cheesecake, so my daughter and I shared that (and again, brought half of it home) and my husband had a giant piece of caramel pound cake that he will be eating for at least the next three days. The homemade sweet tea and lemonade are both perfect compliments to the food, especially on a hot summer day like the day we went. The restaurant itself is in a converted mansion that has a very homey feel. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the other customers that were there were also super fun to talk to. Eating at Hidden Manna is like eating at a longtime friends home with delicious food made with lots of love. We will be regulars there, without a doubt.
First time here. I had their fried green tomatoes for my appetizer and I had the Chicken New Orleans Pasta for my dinner. The fried green tomatoes were good. It was my first time having it and I think they did a good job. The Chicken New Orleans Pasta was flavored well. It was just too creamy for me. It came with garlic bread that was very tasty. My sister‘s boyfriend had the fried catfish and he loved it. It was an overall positive experience. I want to try their breakfast next time.
Please order your food well before arriving. The restaurant opened at 11am for breakfast. Me and my mother arrived at about 11:45am and did not receive our food until 12:44pm 🥴there were maybe 10 couples in the whole restaurant. I ordered a banana foster French toast and my mom ordered a fish and grits dish. And for the price and wait 10/10 wouldn’t recommend unless you have no plans and don’t mind waiting 💁🏻♀️
Loved it each time Ive been there - fried green tomatoes and remoulade sauce are magnificent Brown Betty fish and chicken pasta not bad either. Do you still have live entertainment on Fridays?
The food and the service were exceptional. You can find an eclectic menu with creole and Italian inspired dishes. I had the fried catfish and grits and I would order it again. Such a substantial portion that I couldn’t finish my dinner.Even though this place is a bit far for me, anytime I’m in the area I will make a stop here. Michelin would say to get off Interstate 57 at Matteson and try this place.
Very nice! This really is a treasure. I had the shrimp etouffee and it was delicious. I especially enjoyed the contrast between the delicate shrimp and the spicy sausage. She had a chicken jambalaya and it was delightful. About $40 with tip. We are so glad to finally find this hidden treasure.
Good food and service. Very nice restaurant for young and old to dine and relax. They have a great selection of fine foods and drinks with a range of prices. I had to leave my party early and I wasnt able to eat the main entree but dined on appetizers. And they did not disappoint. Scrumptious!! I will return soon.
Took the family out for Valentines Day Dinner. We placed our orders, after waiting awhile they bring our food out. Portions look smaller than normal, maybe because its Valentines Day.The food wasnt even HOT, WARM at best. We should have sent the food back to the kitchen, but we didnt. We did receive a 10% Discount for the inconvenienc, but its nothing like fresh piping hot food.
Absolutely delicious. The testing menu was incredible we went for my birthday and it was wonderful. Great service and excellent food.
This is my fave hidden gem in my community. I take all my family and friends from out of town here! Its delicious, fresh and the customer service is always top notch. Its Black owned. And I always get breakfast but I had dinner for the first time and it was amazing too! Love love love this place.
This food was EXCELLENT. I had their shrimp and grits it was sooo good!! I also tried the pecan pancakes, my guest had pancakes also. The person next to me had the chicken and waffles. The chicken looked as though it was PERFECTLY cooked. Oh my there is so many dishes on the menu i want to try. It was very hard making a choice, I guess Ill have to go back.😊😂
I saw this restaurant on Channel 11 some years ago and planned to visit, but forgot about it. A friend in Park Forest referred my husband and I to go there and we werent disappointed. The food, staff, restaurant were awesome! Please go. It is a hidden treat!
Good service enjoy the root beer with my meal blackened catfish with rice and spinach
Used to be one of my favorite places to eat. The scenery and vibes were pretty nice I haven’t been there in about a year and a half but went yesterday with my family. The waitress who started 3 days ago told me they didn’t have kids Mac and cheese on the menu when they did and insisted she’d discount my order because of that and didn’t. I had to wait over an hour for our meal and it wasn’t really busy but then getting our food my adult order of the Cajun Mac and cheese was significantly smaller than my sons kids meal portion I got spicy Cajun and he got no spice and flavor wise you couldn’t tell a difference there was no spice to mine at all it was just orange compared to his yellow. She also took forever on refills to the point when I asked for them we didn’t get them until we were leaving. Used to be a really good place to go and enjoy nice music with great food it doesn’t have that magic feel to anymore sadly.
The level of quality, flavor, and kind service took me by surprise, it was top tier. I arrived just as they were starting to close with my grandmother and family. They catered to us and made sure we enjoyed our visit. Ill definitely be coming back.
Im really done giving this restaurant a chance. They are pricey for no reason. Everything served in to-go style including dine in during covid. Not very pleased but it is what it is. I ordered a 3 cheese omelet for me and one for my son, and it came with bacon and hashbrowns. Their potatoes/hashbrowns were not fresh. They tasted microwaved or like reheated potatoes. I added a side of cheddar grits, where they only add cheese to the top- its not added & cooked throughout. The bacon is also not fresh- id bet money its the bacon that you microwave too. Their bacon taste just like pork rinds and just looks like bacon 🥓 and now for the eggs. My son mentioned how his omelet was missing cheese. I took a bite of my omelet and noticed something strange about my 3 cheese omelet. I couldnt taste any cheese at all. I cut my omelet open to find that yes, my 3 cheese omelet was indeed cooked with no cheese lol AND I found an egg shell ! Im done! I have had it! To fix it, my waiter gave me a order of their shrimp pasta which was okay, I mean nothing special. Not more/better than a $8 plate, which they got going for $30-40. It did NOT fix my family brunch being ruined by overpaying for mediocre food. Our waiter was good. Thats it. Thanks Scott. But Id probably try somewhere in the city or Flavor. This place too comfortable or understaffed or cutting corners on inventory or all of the above.
Enjoyed the Creole taste and atmosphere. Got there at 11:30am only 4 other people were there. Place was clean. Waitress was nice. I ordered catfish and green fried tomatoes. Loved it. The tomatoes had a nice spicy dressing. It was good. They used real plates and silverware. (A reviewer made a comment about eating out of Styrofoam). A bit pricey but with Covid-19 almost everything is a bit pricey. I feel my meal was worth it and satisfying.
I ordered for the first time from this place and unfortunately, this will be my last time. I was not able to order what I preferred because they were out of the food, therefore I had to switch up what I wanted. The food is also overpriced for mediocre food.
So today is my birthday and my husband and I started off at one of my favorite spots Hidden Manna! We were the first people there this morning at 9am and had the entire spit to ourselves for abut 20-30 minutes...I snapped a photo because trust me that is rare but so special. By 9:30am it was packed as it the norm. However, that’s not the best part. I ordered Catfish and grits (deep fried grit cakes) and my goodness was this dish delicious!!! My husband ordered the shrimp and grits with andouille sausage and it too was delicious. The flavors, textures and visuals are consistently perfect! Plus our waitress (who’s name currently escapes me) took such great care of us. She even served a slice of cake with chocolate syrup and whipped cream as a complimentary birthday treat.
The staff was wonderful, the food was delicious, and there was something for everyone- what more can you ask for? I can’t wait to go back and try something new.
The food is all that good at all it was expensive for nothing they give you small portions the fries were absolutely terrible they used only cajun seasoning on everything i understand its a Cajun place but since when people only use one seasoning and be like oooo yummy this buss especially a seasoning that taste like just spicy powder nobody i had to add my own seasoning to the pasta when i got hot and the fried catfish my boyfriend had was a lil soggy on the bottom side i only tried the place cause it had like 4.5 stars how they got that many stars idk also the garlic bread didnt taste like garlic bread it was hard stale and taste like herds zero garlic butter
The place is nice and roomy, the meals was delightful and the prices were very inexpensive. fast, efficient service and very affable staff. Will definitely recommend this place.
Great establishment, with excellent food and an attentive staff. WELL RECOMMENDED!!!! Today we went with a party of 9 and Lisa (our waitress) was very professional and took care of us. She verified every order and kept us updated while we waited. This was actually our second visit and it was just as pleasant as the first. My family will definitely be back again!
The customer was great unfortunately the food was not. We ordered the seafood omelette and the shrimp and grits also the Crawfish fritter, the fried green tomatoes, and a side of salmon croquettes. It just really lacked seasoning and that authentic Creole flavor and everything came with a horseradish sauce which tasted like wasabi.
The manager was very nice the food was not good at all and it was breakfast. I have had better from them, but breakfast 😆. I was refunded some of my money. Prices to high for what they serve
The Hidden Manna Cafe is a cute hideaway. The food was cooked to order, fresh and very delicious. We were seated in a large dining room with no other customers. (just the two of us). Two customers were finishing their meal in another dining area. A total of 4 customers. We decided not to Dine in....The waitress took our order and money then told us we had to leave the permissions and she would curbside our food to us. I asked if we could have a seat at the bar. I was prepared to purchase a cocktail while we waited. She was rude as HELL, she replied, NO! You must go sit in your car and wait.
Hidden Manna was recommended to me by a friend/business associate. The hostess was very accomodating. The service started a little slow, but I noticed all her tables were sat at one time, and she got back on track. My Pineapple Mimosa was not chilled, and also a little strong, but otherwise ok. The food was excellent, the server was attentive, and I never had to ask or wait for anything ( except right in the beginning.) The jazz playing was just the right volume, not too loud as you cant have a conversation, and not so low as you can barely hear it. When we left, the hostess thanked us for coming. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. A little pricey for me, but Ill be back anyway. It was worth it.
This is my favorite restaurant! The food is always amazing. The service is A+.
Staff were great, and food were delicious!! I would love to dine in here again!!
Great food but slow service. They were busy but very little communication
The food is perfect here! Flavorful and the spice is just right. Wished they had more drink options. A tad bit slow on the service side, but it was good service.
We met at hidden Manor 10 friends from the south suburbs Chicago and Georgia to have brunch we were seated we talked for a while then we ordered coffee which took about 10 minutes to get there so we decided to order appetizers first we had the fried green tomatoes which were pretty good I ordered the pork chops which were paper thin and fried too hard I had eggs over medium well they came over medium and the hash browns were lukewarm and so were the pancakes I dont think the waitress was that attentive to our needs a lot of questions she couldnt answer some of our friends had to return their food to the kitchen because it was too spicy and I didnt care for hidden manna I tried it I didnt like it and I will not be returning
The actual building is really nice. I heard it used to be a bar or something? The staff was really great. We had a server who pretty much new the menu and was able to help us out. They have seating for children, which is a bonus. They have a wine bar. The prices were fair and the amount of food you get is a good portion. I had the shrimp and grits. It looked very appetizing. I liked it but it was a little blan compared to others I have tasted. My sister ordered a vegan sald.( its nice they have those options) she said it was goodWe split a caramel pound cake together. I really like it. I would really love to come back and try other dishes. They have a great variety on their menu. This is a nice restaurant to go to for a quick bite, out with the girls, or even with the family(kid menu available). They really have something for everyone and the ambiance is crazy.
Was passing through on a roadtrip and got a pickup order.WOW!Cant wait to go back!Had the chicken sandwich and catfish. Ate some leftovers the next day and was impressed again.
Great food, but our server wasnt able to make any blended drinks, I wanted a frozen Latte so bad but she couldnt make it for whatever reason! But the food they serve is awesome! Very friendly & polite staff, will be returning soon!
Absolutely delicious! We had a party of 18ppl and not one person had a complaint. The food was fresh, the portions were great for the price! Kelly was our waitress and she handled the large party with ease! We would recommend the any catfish dish, gumbo, fried chicken, fried pork chops, spinach dip, fried green tomatoes, green beans, potato salad, fried corn lol basically everything we ordered! The only thing is remember the drinks are NOT free refills I didn’t realize that until I received my bill and paid $10 for lemonade/tea but I guess I just missed that on the menu...
Delicious food with fresh, local ingredients; impeccable service!
I really wanted to love this place since I frequent the area. I hoped this would be go to place for not living closer to Pappadeaux but I was sadly mistaken. The customer service here is awesome from the greeter to the server and thats why I gave it three stars because cuisine wise it was a total let down.My wife and I both ordered the chicken and rice soup. I dont know what we received but there was nothing soupy about it. It was thicker than oatmeal Im talking oatmeal left in the pot for a couple hours thick. For our main dish she ordered shrimp and grits Im not sure what came out but it wasnt shrimp and grits or anything close to the authentic recipe. I ordered blackened salmon with spinach and potatoes my salmon was actually decent but the spinach had no flavor what so ever. Dessert I ordered cheesecake with strawberries what I received was something youd get at a casino dessert buffet you know the little circle cake with strawberry jelly on it. I also noticed that the other patrons didnt finish the meals either which tells me they werent completely satisfied with their orders either. Again its a cozy place with a wonderful staff but chef needs to be replaced.
I’ve been to the restaurant several times before the pandemic. The food was very delicious; however, my experience today was not the same. The food had no taste which was weird because this is a soul food/Cajun restaurant . I spent about $60 only to throw the food away and go to Culver’s. I tried to eat it, but it just wasn’t good. Maybe they have a new chef.... When I called to complain, the staff were apologetic but didn’t offer the option to refund or exchange the food. No accommodations. I’m just disappointed and this used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the south suburbs.
The food was delicious.. it was my first time there & when I walked in I got a great vibe. I cant wait to go back. I had the fettuccine shrimp & chicken New Orleans dish and it was way beyond my expectations.
Great food and service! I went on a weekday for lunch and was quite comfortable. Its a smaller establishment. I imagine it can get quite crowded on weekends.
The food is wonderful. I ordered the bluegill and my companion ordered the jambalaya, available in 3 levels of heat. Our server was sweet and unflappable, but amazingly unaware of the most rudimentary details of dining.I cannot write a complete review as Im responding in my phone. My rating for google rating is 0 stars
Needed a break from visiting family member in hospital. This was a relaxing place to go. The coffee delicious, service friendly, proportions of food very friendly for the price! I would visit again when in town. Cheese omelette probably the best Ive had. I ate only half of my food and will share rest with someone. Wish I took a photo before I started eating, but here is a photo of leftovers.
The owner addressed an issue with a server to only my husband. I was the one who was upset about the issue. She apologized to him three different times and keep offering him dessert. She did not look my direction or offer me dessert. I felt disrespect because I was sitting there aswell but never got a word from her at until I paid.Being 9 months pregnant it did not feel good to be at that restaurant. 😕
I am only tried chicken rice soup to go, it was delicious. I definitely going back to try other dishes.
I used to frequent their to-go location on Halsted in Homewood before it closed. First time today ordering to-go at the Matteson location, TALK ABOUT DISAPPOINTING! Waited 20 minutes past the confirmation text i received saying the order was ready, Jambalaya was missing the sausage, Pasta was completely missing the sauce and we didnt realize it until we were home, which is 19 miles away... called them, they apologized and asked me if I wanted to come back and get my order replaced, and they will talk to the kitchen staff. Um, I live too far to just come back. Ill never go here again!, next time I want some cajun/creole food, Ill take my a$$ to NOLA!
The turkey burger was absolutely divine!!!
AMAZING FOOD. CARRY OUT ORDER BUT CUTE DECOR.
The place serves big dishes and for affordable pricing. very kind employees. Will visit again.
Great place my go-to place for shrimp and grits and Southern food is excellent Priced Right check out the live performances wonderful atmosphere ample parking
Food is great! But they are either short staffed or inexperienced with serving more than 5 people at a time. Food I good but the wait is sometimes so ridiculous that it can ruin the experience
I got on the waitlist and after 1.5 hours and seeing multiple people go in and not return and I was number two I called to find out “oh I don’t know what’s going on.” I’m not impressed with this place and service at all, more to come about the food! Okay tried the food, my order wasn’t correct, the waiter seemed to be clueless, the food wasn’t seasoned probably, I wasn’t impressed At All! Sorry I try to support but close your doors hire a real Chef and probably staff before you open again!
Yummy soup! Great service!
If you decide to dine-in, please expect to be cutting your food in a foam container. Everything was disposable. Its hard to enjoy but during this times.. okay. If you have eaten there before the way food taste didnt change. So looking past that.. I all for the chicken and waffles.
Food was ok nothing to get excited about. Salmon croquettes was horrible taste like rubber. Had a funeral chappel feel to it very dusty feel.
Food great! Service was slow
I went to hidden manna last Friday. I ordered on the phone directly from the restaurant not online. When l arrived l was told l could not use my credit card because it did not have a chip.Common sense would be inform your customers that phone in about your policy .The website states they do not take cash .l had to find a bank to get cash.l honestly considered not returningbut that would have been wrong on my part.I spent 50 dollars on 2 hard fried pork chops with minimal seasoning, a side of roasted potatoes that looked as if they came out of the frozen bag of oBrian potatoes you get at jewel. The cup of soup or at least l think it was soup had no broth and appeared to be thawing out it was stuck together in the container. The stuffed hamburger had no flavor, 3 wilted pickles 2 small overripe tomato slices. The carmel cake was a thick piece of old school pound cake with some icing slapped on the top. This meal was terrible l threw most of it away and proceeded to go to Texas Roadhouse where l got a wonderful steak and shrimp meal less than 50 dollars and they took my card without the chip.Never again l saw them on check please.l always wondered why there are nor many cars in there parking lot now l know.
Friendly staff, great food, yet service on the slow side.
Service was very slow, food was warm when it came and portions very small for the price.
Food was hot and delicious!
I took a friend of mine her birthday 02/26/2021 food was ok and I have been here before, food was not hot at didn’t complain just try to support my own.... they have to do better
Slow service good food
Service was attentive as always and the food was extra delicious. Thanks guys!
The food was delicious. Great service!
(Matteson Location) I called to add my party of three to the waitlist at 11:45 AM and I was told the wait would be 45 minutes. I arrived at 12:18 to find out that we were never added to the waitlist, fine. The gentleman added us and said it would be a 45 minute wait, ummm okay. After waiting 30 minutes, I went in to check the status and was told we had to wait 15 more minutes, fine. There were several parties leaving while I waited in my car and no other parties were seated. After waiting another the 15 minutes I went in thinking we would be seated, but no we were told we had to wait because “James” was next to be seated. There was no one named James waiting inside the establishment. Also his name was on the list for 80 minutes. No one bothered to contact James to even see if he was still waiting! The staff had POOR customer service skills and no sense of urgency to figure out what was going on. I’ve visited this place several times in the past and never experienced anything like this.
Food. LOVED IT.Service. LOVED IT.A nice cozy place to enjoy great new orleans style food.
Place is okay nice hidden spot been here twice and obviously its not that awesome because I cant remember what I ordered. I remember it being ok but not to point where I returned back after the second time and this was in 2018. Maybe now since its 2021 Ill try them back again and update this review then.
Had the chicken and waffles for take out. Didnt look like much ( regular Belgium style waffle with a small/ medium sized fried chicken breast filet on top) but it did taste good. The maple cream sauce is what makes it in my opinion. (You could also get wings instead of breast)
The food was excellent the catfish poboy, jamablia.
Maaaaaaaan!!! Its a hidden gem in the South Suburbs. I wish that I could express in words, my advice...just go and experience it for yourself. ****the fried green tomatoes, UMPH UMPH UMPH UMPH good
This is the third time Ive been and since covid it really isnt the same. Prices are of a high end restaurant but the 27$ steak and eggs came unseasoned and lacking flavor. A few Cajun dishes are done right but lot of hit and miss. Also service is pretty slow, took an hour to get food but restaurant was empty. Think Im done with this place...
This place is hidden if you are not familiar with the area. It has a nice size parking lot. You can dine-in or carry out. It is a cozy place. And the people were nice. I had seafood platter. Small pieces and the perch and blue gill was fried kinda hard for me. But we do plan to come back and try the breakfast menu.
I have visited Hidden Manna on several occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. Their excellent customer service (greeters, wait staff, and manager (Glynis)) and stellar culinary delights are consistent and appreciated! My fave menu items are the shrimp po boy, fried catfish filet, and the Nawlins shrimp & chicken andouille sausage fettuccine.
Hidden Manna is a jewel in the heart of the south suburbs. The food is excellent and the staff creates a warm welcoming family atmosphere that speaks to the soul. Tim, Tay, and Tina are a few of the dynamic staff at Hidden Manna that embodies the high quality service that this Black owned restaurant stands for.
