I went there for a belated free comic book day and it was only my 2nd time ever being in the shop. All the workers there were super nice and helpful not to mention their awesome collection of current comics. I was even able to dig through some back issues and find some comics I was missing from years ago!

Thank you for including BSI in this list! I AM A BIG COMIC BOOK FAN! I have been going to BSI since I started working at JCPenney. It is obviously a comic book store. They sell all kinds of comics. Graphic novels, hard and soft covers. It amazed me recently when they had on BIG display the #1000 issue of Detective Comics! Anybody who knows anything about comic books knows Detective was Batmans first comic book appearance in #27 of 1939! I HAD to buy the #1000 issue of Detective Comics!

Gave me excellent service the first time I came about a week before before Thanksgiving, ordered several 8 by 10 top loaders that I needed, and they were delivered fast. The second time I went, though, which was in much worse traffic, I came today after ordering one more top loader, to find out that the distributor did not bring them when they were supposed to yesterday. To be fair to BSI, that would appear to be pretty much the Distributors fault. While that particular visit didnt turn out to be one of my best experiences, I would say that this is, possibly by far, one of the better businesses in all of Louisiana when it comes to customer satisfaction. I can tell that from the fact that the owner cares enough about his customers for a change to respond objectively and politely to the reviews, about how he can make the experience at his business better. If only more Louisiana businesses were like that.

WARNING: Dishonorable Business PracticesMy wife and I went to BSI Comics to purchase a gift using store credit that I received from selling some items to the store. Fletch, the employee working at the time, refused to honor the store credit! Even though the store credit receipt claimed that the credit “will never expire”, Fletch still refused to honor the debt. Fletch claimed to call the owner, who was the source of refusal. They offered me 20% off of an item, and I refused to accept the insulting offer.The excuse Fletch gave was that the store had changed ownership, but that should not affect the customer! When you purchase a business, you buy both the assets and the liabilities detailed in the balance sheet. If the business has debt, and the new owner does not want to pay the debt out of pocket, then the purchasing price should be reduced by the amount of the debt. The business cannot dissolve debt that they owe, especially to a customer!In the end, Fletch even said that they have had trouble like this in the past. So that means I am not the first customer BSI Comics refused to honor their store credit. I left my contact information for the owner, and I have not received any attempted contact from the owner more than a week later.Let this be a warning to customers looking to do business with BSI Comics. The new owner is terrible. Take your business elsewhere.I want to support local businesses, but not one that steals from the community!

Full Disclosure: Im a former employee. BSI is a great store, with a lot of history. Started by Carl Tupper and his wife in the late 70s, BSI spawned generations of comics readers (and a few comics professionals). Carl was forced to sell the store after Hurricane Katrina wiped him out financially. Since then there have been a couple of ownership changes. One thing that hasnt changed is the desire by the people who work there to foster a love of comic books. The store has a large selection and the employees have a vast base of knowledge of comic books and the industry. Stop on in.

Probably the most well known comic shop around and the only shop that my friends who arent into comics have ever been in. They always have music playing and usually have something playing on the TV.First floor is where youll find the recent weekly books as well as a wall of brand new trades and hardcovers with a small selection of action figures and collectables.The top floor is filled with back issues and bundled runs of comics. The highlight of this store is the used graphic novel selection. Im always browsing those shelves for something new to read. The key issues and variants on the walls are constantly rotating so theres always something new to look at

As a creator for Marvel entertainment, I have booked two weeks of Florida signing events with great enthusiasm coming from many store owners. I had a route that took me west and called BSI to do a signing and was met with incredible rudeness and constant put-offs. All that was needed was a simple no and I would have moved on. I also put on a live drawing demonstration using a document camera to show how science and mathematics can help an artist create a popular superhero so this show has great communal and educational value. It has been presented before over quarter of a million students and has gotten rave reviews and yet, Despite that, BSI didnt seem at all interested in what they could do for the community and brushed me aside with total disrespect. One has to wonder why theyre even in the comic business with that kind of an attitude. It is always their prerogative, but a more civil decline would have been helpful. My recommendation is to go to another store where the owner actually appreciates the ins-and-outs of the business including its creators.
