An awesome outfit! The bikeloud.org crew limped in on their beat up bikes after a punishing two days in the rain, across dirt roads, three states and App Gap just the day before the holiday. Despite rolling in unannounced, the crew at ORO set aside their lunches and work to get the crew back on the road. With a tight timeline and a lot of miles left to finish our journey these guys made it happen for us. They worked on our bikes for four solid hours making sure we would be able to finish the trip. A class act all around, thank you guys. Were happy to say the trip concluded successfully and we made it all the way to Quoddy with your help.

They are so helpful and nice for instance I bought some bike grips, but when I tried to take off my old grips, I couldnt. I called them and they said they could pry my old ones off free of charge, and put the new ones on. While I was there they even lubed my brake handles, because the were feeling gummed up. FIVE STARS!!

Absolutely great! Leased a cross country ski package for my 8 year old granddaughter. Her request. She says it is way more fun than down hill. So good for nana.Great deal, super staff, cool way to get kids interested in the outdoors. Thanks Onion River for being there again! You are the best!

Just purchased a fantastic mountain bike from ORO. The process took several weeks, as the high demand made it tough to find the right bike, fit, color I was looking for. Every time a new bike arrived at Onion Rivers store, their helpful staff called me directly to notify me, and would even hold it for me up to 24hrs. After several arrivals, and trials, the third bike they ordered was finally the right fit and color I was looking for. A+ customer service the whole way. Overall it was a fantastic experience and the recommendations for best performance were much appreciated. This customer service is what makes them a cardinal part of the Montpelier community.

Kip and his team are super knowledgable, helpful and invested in getting the central VT community outdoors. I recently bought new XC ski set ups for me and my partner, after doing a lot of my own research online. Their value exceed what I found on the web, and the products they didnt have on hand they ordered for us. They were so helpful in getting everything put together, and point us in the direction for getting involved in a new sport. I am super happy that we still have an outdoors store in town, and one that is so committed to service! Highly recommended to anyone looking for any sort of outdoors purchase, from a pair of socks to a whole new ski, bike or board set up. Kudos.

I just purchased a bike at ORO and left with both the bike and a great appreciation of the knowledge, professionalism and kindness of the ORO team. I called in advance and explained my riding style and interests. Beckett and Jason discussed my information before I arrived, made a plan and had the bikes queued up for when I arrived. They pointed out aspects of the products in an objective, pressure free way, that helped me make a decision. And they were just enjoyable to work with.

Highly recommend for bike repairs! I showed up on day three of a five day bikepacking trip after I bent my frame coming down Buffalo Mountain Road. The bike techs were able to get the frame straightened out in under an hour, despite a busy schedule with other customers. Everyone was very polite, professional, and definitely knew their bikes. Also very fair prices, which was appreciated as I was traveling on a budget.

Avid MBer here. Onion River is a fantastic place bike shop/ outdoor enthusiasts. The location of this shop is grade A prime beef. The layout is on point. The staff friendly and outgoing and knowledgeable. The hold bike events which is even more awesome. With a company like this being active in the community, I would say this shop will be in business for a looooong time, because, well, they get it. They are all like-minded outdoors type. So with that being said, stop in and buy something or just shoot the breeze and dont forget the dog since Montpelier is a pet friendly city! Get out and live!

The friendly and helpful staff at ORO can answer just about any gear question you have. They seem to genuinely care that customers have a good time outside, whether that means spending money or not. Ive brought in very old gear twice now and the staff at ORO went above and beyond to keep that stuff working instead of taking the easy route and pushing me to drop beaucoup bucks on something shiny and new. This is what local gear stores should be - they offer expertise and customer care you cant find at any big box or online retailer.

Ive been a somewhat regular customer of Onion River Sports for over one year. In that time I have always been very happy with their selection of merchandise, their product knowledge, and their overall custom experience delivery. I recently purchase a new bike from them, marking my first big buy. I was very happy with the attention to detail they provided in the bicycle buying process. This included: fitting, test-riding, product knowledge, accessory recommendations and discounts (10% for a year), and warm customer service (shout out to Per). Im a fan of Northwestern Vermonts other big outdoor gear outfitter too, but have to say that theres some character that sets Onion River Sports apart from the pack.

Went in looking for day passes to Millstone and info about riding there as we are from out of town. There were no day passes available, acceptable maybe the just ran out... But we were also hoping for a map and some trail tips from locals, which I would expect from a bike shop who is listed as a seller for day passes. There were no maps, and the staff had no information on the trails. That is the reason for the 3 stars. I didnt need to buy anything when I was there, but it seemed like a well stocked shop with good gear.

Everything was on sale on mid December, but the store was half empty, maybe they are just clearing out for the next season?? Was hoping to shop fitbits, but they only had a few more expensive fitness trackers. A few pairs of shoes, some bikes, bike equipment. Show insoles, ladies size 4.5 or mens size 15.5!! ( But deeply discounted...)

We have been ORS customers since the early 80s and have spent a small fortune (for us) with them on bikes, clothing and equipment. The owners and staff are exceptional - customer service is as good as it gets and their technical service and recommendations are always spot on. We keep coming back to ORS over the last 40 years because of the people, service and selection.

Really worth it.I have purchased Makalu poles from Onion River for the last 5 years. They may cost a bit more than other places but they have warranted and repaired them for me at no charge countless times and I put hundreds of miles on the trails in the ADKs and Whites really putting the product to the test. People need to do the math. Cheaper is not always cheaper or better. Service has been great.

It was a sad day for Montpelier when Onion River Sports closed last year. It reminded us how valuable a locally owned sport shop is, and what a contribution ORS and its great staff made to the Central Vermont community. We are very lucky that ORS has been reborne as Onion River Outdoors. Now is the time upgrade your wheels and camping gear !

I went in there today for the 3rd time. First two times were just to look around and get familiar with the place. However, today I went in there looking to spend some money on a new mtn bike and stood in there for over 20min and never even got a hello or how can I help you. Shame... I found a bike I wanted to buy too. After standing there looking at the same bike wondering why no one was helping me I decided to go over to the service area to ask them about the type of warranty you get on bikes or plans that they may offer on bikes you purchase through them. Stood there for 10min listening to a guy go on about a trail that he had no idea where it was. Not good if you dont even know about a trail thats literally 2 mins down the road. This doesnt make me feel confident in the shop one bit. Guess Ill take my business elsewhere. Im sure someone will want my money, even if I have to drive further.

Review №54

Onion River service is very poor, as technicians are not careful. I note another reviewer comments on Zack: yes a nice guy, but ruined a pair of $1000 skis because he was not careful and miss drilled holes when trying to mount the binding. In response, management was was completely unwilling to help or come up with any solution, even making up stories to defend the work of the tech. When I took the skis elsewhere, they laughed at poor work and astounded by the horrendous response. Unfortunately, I have since learned that this is not an uncommon occurrence at ORS.I would strongly discourage others from letting ORS technicians touch your equipment. If you want to pay top dollar for some nice gear its fine. But dont expect responsive service and beware of lazy work.
