Updated Review!Oh my days!! After previously attempting to grab food here, Heather reached out to me and asked me to come back and she would personally help me get an order together and even comped my meal.Everyone who works here is super kind and responsive!Let me tell you this place is a DREAM!! My inner (New Yorker) child was thoroughly healed. I had an avo toast with salmon on top with some other modifications. It was everything I’d had hoped for and more! The flavor profiles of the pickled onion and fresh salmon was to die for!! When I heard these little fishies were flown in from Brooklyn I could cry :’)Also the Honey Lavender latte was amazing! So smooth and not abrasive at all. A perfect morning cup.I’m so mad at myself for not trying this place earlier. The order ahead and pick up options are fast and easy. Next time I have to get a bagel and maybe even the matzo ball soup! Definitely making this my new brunch spot 💕💕….Old review:I’ve been meaning to go here for forever and almost had the chance today. Unfortunately the parking is a nightmare but I don’t blame this place because it’s all university students up and down the street, but be careful you’ll get ticketed or towed swiftly. Also when I got there I realized it was order online and pick up, but everything I wanted was out of stock. I’ll try again another day :p
Wonderful selection of well done bagels, cream cheese, and sandwiches. Ordering pickup on their website is quick and easy, and they always have your order ready swiftly. Their prices are very affordable given the quality and portion size, especially for the bagels with custom cream cheese. They have fantastic lox and highly recommend the bagel with lox cream cheese if thats your thing!
We missed New York-styled bagels, and we were happy to find this place in Nashville. We ordered Nova with smoked salmon and Roasted Garlic and Rosemary. We were very pleased; Nova was excellent.Too bad that the store is only for pick up and we have to order online and wait outside. All staff were very friendly though.
I have been craving a good lox bagel for a while. This did not disappoint. They offer pick up and delivery only which is fine because we were headed out of town anyway. I had the Nova Scotia salmon on an everything bagel with garlic Rosemary cream cheese…sweet baby Jesus…it was so good. This hit the spot and was perfection. The perfect chew on the bagel and amazing smoked salmon. Hubby got the Reuben on pumpernickel. He loved it and he was nice enough to let me have a small bite lol. It was delicious, I loved it paired the pumpernickel. The coffee is excellent as well. It’s a bit pricey but it’s definitely worth it.
First off, you have to order online. We didn’t know this before going. The shop is completely closed to the public. We arrived at 810 am and were told they couldn’t make a breakfast sandwich yet and that it would be a “few minutes” for a bagel order that we had to place online rather than just tell the human standing in front of us. It took 35 minutes to get 3 plain bagels that were toasted with butter. We actually had to ask staff what was taking so long to toast 3 bagels. The bagels were cold when we got them. We watched several other people walk up, hear that it would be an extended wait and leave. Meanwhile, we sat at the tables out front and only saw 3 people come pick up their online orders. There was no line outside and only one other person sitting at a table. After more than a week in Nashville and thoroughly enjoying the food scene for 3 meals a day, this was by far the most disappointing. Luckily, there are plenty of amazing restaurants in the area to choose from.
The bagels were excellent and thank God for one of the servers who took care of us I was from out of town and didn’t realize that you had to pre-order your bagel I went there to sit down and have a lax with Bagel but I guess due to either employee shortage or pandemic or whatever they’re still not doing that a lot of people standing outside waiting for their orders pre-ordering online but we got taken care of by nice gentleman came a nice tip he should become the general manager of this place but I will not go back until they have seating
Excellent bagels. Free option for extra cream cheese, and its truly loaded. The owner took the time to chat with us, and they were incredibly kind.
This is the one. After being spoiled rotten in Brooklyn for years with exceptional bagel shops all over, this place has the magic. Do they import the water along with the lox? Size of bagels are NYC standard -- praise be. Imagine a world with seasoning on BOTH sides. Even with many imported ingredients from New York, the price is still reasonable, especially considering the bagel traps around town charging more for way less. Setting the bar right where it should be. Transported to Zuckers or even Ess a Bagel back in the city.Additionally, extremely accommodating staff considering the pandemic precautions by which they are still abiding. Worth the drive to the Belmont area anytime youre craving an exceptional bagel. Please open a location out east. Thank you for spreading the good news of the blessed bagel!
On a busy Sunday when it was raining, they went above and beyond for great customer service. The food was delicious and they were able to accommodate all the needs of a hungry group of high maintenance ladies. Owner is so kind and wish I could have given her a hug! Would definitely come again.
Looked like it might be good, but had to try and order online. Before we got through that process they came out and told us the kitchen was 45 minutes behind. The biggest issue is you HAVE TO order online. No face-to-face. Very disappointing. Will never go back or suggest.
From growing up in New Jersey to moving to Nashville for school. This is the closest place to a Jersey bagel. Absolutely amazing Egg bagels! Only problem is, it definitely has New York’s prices. I’d come back everyday if it wasn’t for a $17 bagel with coffee.Don’t let that shy you away. Best bagels in town!!
This is one of the most authentic bagel places that I have experienced outside of NYC. The sandwiches, both breakfast and lunch, are absolutely delicious. Wide variety of bagel and cream cheese choices. Jalepeno bacon cream cheese is fantastic, if you like spicy. A bit pricey, but fully worth it.
Super good bagel, a lot like New York bagelsNot so good espressoI ordered a sourdough bagel with roasted garlic and rosemary cream cheese. The bagel was nicely toasted with great flavor. I wish it was warm, but maybe because there was a long wait it cooled off.The cream cheese was delicious, but WAY too much! Unless you are heading home and can save it for later, I suggest asking for lite cream cheese in the comments (see picture for how much I had left over).I did not enjoy the espresso. It was cold and super sour / under-extracted. Had a weird flavor too. Plus at $3.50 for a double espresso, it’s kind of pricey.Vegan / vegetarian options available!Update: I’ve been living in NYC for the past 4 months and have become a bit of a bagel connoisseur. This may be a controversial statement, but Proper Bagel is better than many of New York’s “best bagels.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s still no Brooklyn Bagel.
🥯Best quality salmon bagel in Nashville. They have a rock solid menu and everything is great! This is the real thing folks!
My friend & I totally messed up ordering, but Simone was so kind & helpful to us! She made sure that we put our orders in correctly, offered to take our order out to our car, and even took a picture for us. We really appreciated her great customer service :)
When you say you have gluten free options a bed of arugula does not count. You need to take gluten free options off your menu. Thanks
This place is a joke. No actual in person ordering, everything online. No indication of wait times so we ordered and then got notification that our 2 bagels with cream cheese would be ready in 40 MINUTES! Tried canceling via text and of course that doesn’t work either. When I spoke with one of their employees about canceling they seemed shocked that i would want to cancel. They expedited my order but of course it was incorrect, didn’t have all day to wait for them to correct it. I’d definitely avoid this place.
Such wonderful bagels! As a Jewish northerner, these bagels really hit the spot. Also really wanted to give this review to share about how incredibly kind the staff is. Very busy on a Saturday morning and many people were outside waiting to pick up orders. Staff was continuously checking on customers making sure everyone was seen and had what they needed. Love the level of kindness I experienced here! This level of hospitality truly makes the difference.
This place was awesome. The wait was a little longer than expected, but was well worth it. They have every cream cheese imaginable, from plain to cookie dough to dill pickle. The sandwiches are about 10 bucks, but again well worth it. The only downside I can say about this place is it is right near the college, so it brings in that crowd. I will definitely be back, but will order to go for multiple sandwiches. If youre a bagel sandwich lover, you must check it out.
Oh my word. How can a bagel sandwich taste so good? Do they use fairy dust? Parking was a hassle due to construction across the street. And they are pickup and delivery only. But not even those minor issues are an issue when breakfast is this good.
Amazing bagel shop. Amazing cream cheese variety, amazing bagels, all around a great experience. The only bad things about this place are the lack of parking, the long lines, and the crowded quarters but all three stem from the fact that the food here is SO good the place is always totally packed with people! Definitely a must-eat for a quick brunch downtown. In addition to bagels they also have other offerings for brunch, both savory and sweet including but not limited to mac and cheese, brownies, cookies, pastries of various kinds, chicken salad, tuna salad and much, much more! Its a little pricey, but the prices reflect the quality directly, in my experience.
Amazing bagels and the white fish salad is to die for! And the owner Heather was wonderful in handling a small-ish catering order, 1 day before the event all over email and no hassles!
We had Proper Bagel cater breakfast for my bridesmaids while we were getting our hair and makeup done before the wedding. We ordered an assortment of bagels + cream cheese, the lavender honey greek yogurt + granola, and coffee. Everything was AMAZING! All the food was wrapped and plated beautifully. Heather took such great care of us, was quick to reply, and gave great recommendations (definitely recommend the strawberry cheesecake and garlic rosemary cream cheese)! Would absolutely recommend them to cater for any shower, brunch, etc.
Like 99% of places west of Philly Proper Bagel does not serve bagels. They serve bread with a hole in it. What sets this place a notch above all the others is its selection of cream cheese spreads and the amount they pile on your sandwich. I suggest the roasted veggies spread. Overall not a bad experience.
Definitely would fit in in New York. Lots of nice fish and cream cheese spreads. Loses a star for low number of bagel options, physically small bagel, ignoring my request for light toasting and doing it the same as everyone else, and neglecting to tell me that they would provide glasses with water when I was purchasing an eat in order and a water bottle.
Good bagels, but not worth the chaos. 18 months into the pandemic and they still don’t have a system competent enough to deliver a bagel and cream cheese in less than 45 minutes. And if it’s raining…don’t even think about it.
Wow ! They had so many flavors of cream cheese that were very unique and tasted like a dessert! Lots of other selection too. I wasn’t too excited when my fiancé said we were going to a bagel place until we walked in. It was amazing!! Highly recommend. They also will let you sample the cream cheeses if you can’t decide!!
First… the staff at Proper Bagel absolutely epitomize world class customer service. Upon first visit to Proper Bagel I had no idea that you needed to order online. Instead of sending me back to my car ( to order online), someone came out to take my order at the door. Additionally, every staff member that came out while I was waiting asked had I been helped. They were all just so lovely ! Now……onto their bagels —- they are deee lish! My husband and I drive in from Nolensville on the weekends. They are *that good. Take a trip to Proper Bagels, meet their amazing staff, and enjoy one of their fabulous bagels!
Great place for coffee and breakfast, everything bagel and spreads. I have to be honest; their price is a bit higher than what I am used to, and it may be the same for some of you, so I recommend to study the menu carefully if you want to be frugal, but whatever we got was tasty and delightful. Everything Bagel, but still their variety was tremendous, and if I am in the area, I will probably visit them again as a treat. :)
Very COVID safe, glad theyre still taking it so seriously! We order online and then drive over to pick it up, and its easy. Ordering online is straightforward and clear, and theyve always been kind to text after if there are any issues or questions. (Once they ran out of bialys and were so apologetic by text, she offered to text me the next morning when they had them in stock! Apparently they got wiped out by an unusually large order.) On busy mornings there are lots of staff outside efficiently asking for order names and then running inside to get the order. Just play by their very clear, very well-documented process that was established to keep everyone safe, and youll get an awesome breakfast in return!! The vegan scallion cream cheese is our familys favorite.
This is a great brunch spot! I had a breakfast sandwich and it was delicious! There’s no inside and you should expect to order ~30 minutes before you want your meal.
They get busy for breakfast, but I really enjoy their lunch bagel sandwiches. Fresh ingredients and amazing bagels.
Best bagels ever! The staff was friendly and eager to assist in any way needed. We will be back!
Absolutely the best bagel place in town. They have water filtration that mimics New York water, and everything Ive had here is amazing. I recommend the turkey BLTA, the Rachel, and the Waldorf chicken salad!
Proper Bagel is a delight! One of my pandemic joys has been periodically stocking my freezer with their delicious bagels. The area directly outside PB can be a little hairy—many patrons seem to have forgotten the lost art of parking down the street and walking in favor of double parking—but the folks who work there still manage to get everyone their orders like magic. If you need something special or large quantities, just call or email them. A dozen bagels from Proper Bagel is one of the best deals in town.
The prices arent my cup of tea but the FLAVOR is WORTH IT!! I had the cream cheese and chives, bacon, tomato on the everything bagel. From the first bite...I KNEW THERE WAS A GOD!!! (I already knew because I love Him and know Him but that bagel made me appreciate Him even more) Wow. Wish they were open now so I can get another one!
They take only online orders and orders don’t go through - it simply says order cannot be accepted - no reason given ….card was charged 5 times … for my 5 tries …. stay away till they open the doors or improve the website
This is indeed a proper bagel. I was introduced to this place at the food and wine festival where they served the most perfect little bialy. The shop is gorgeous..very hard to decide with all the wonderful spreads, toppings and other bakery items. Had a Brisket bagel sandwich with chimichurri on an everything bagel. This came with a side of very yummy sweet potatoes. Worth the trip!
True NY style bagels. Best and only place to go in Nashville for them.
Amazing vibes and amazing bagels 💕 the owner is so sweet!!
::::UPDATED REVIEW::::After I posted my review Heather took the time to personally reach out to me and talk about a few of my experiences with ordering. I’ll say it again, the food they offer is delicious and you don’t get that kind of customer service with most restaurants! I will always be a regular for Proper bagel!———————————————————————While the food here is great, the failure to follow directions on orders is quite upsetting. This review comes after 3 failed orders. Called once to let them know they they added cheese to a sandwich that said no cheese, and said they would make right, the sandwich was delivered again, but now missing the avocado we paid extra for but at least it came with no cheese...This morning we ordered again, stating no cheese and they decided to up charge us for the cost of cheese. I don’t understand what the disconnect is.There are some people who can’t leave the house who rely on delivery services to get their order for them. Some of these people also have a food allergy. When you take the extra time to submit special instructions that get continually ignored, wait an hour or more for your food, pay outrageous delivery fees, all just to have your order show up inedible, is hugely disappointing to say the least.
Great, but parking is difficult. Order ahead online
Proper Bagel is one of the BEST Places for fresh LOX & Bagels, the pastrami salmon is a must-try!! They have all traditional deli appetizer you are seeking. From the Bagels to the pastries is a culinary experience! The Service was great from my on-line order, to my car, to the follow up!! Personalized service and pure quality...
Being a former New Yorker and always looking for a great bagel. Proper Bagel is where you need to go. They provide courteous and friendly service with a wide selection of bagels with delicious spreads and sweets. They respond quickly with with my large orders which is always greatly appreciated.Best In Nashville !!!
I’m moving to the area next months and while in town looking for housing this weekend, i definitely wanted to eat at places i’ve never been before! I was seriously in delicious bliss the whole time eating my food. I got an everything bagel sandwich with fried egg, applewood smoked bacon, arugula, avocado, and garlic rosemary cream cheese, total food-gasm!! Little pricey for just a bagel but they were timely and organized:) Definitely recommend, and will be a hangover favorite once in town full time😂
Love their lavender honey cream cheese. As someone from NY, I am satisfied with these bagels. Great balance of chewiness and softness. Classic egg/sausage/cheese sandwich was good as well. Make sure to order in advance as they only do pickup during COVID times. Staff is friendly and efficient. Definitely planning to make this place a breakfast/brunch staple and looking forward to trying new flavors!
Person who was on the phone was rude to me after they hung up on me because I asked if they had any asiago bagels. Guess they dont need the business
Finally, a proper place to get an excellent bagel. This place is very impressive and reminds me of an upscale creamery except with cream cheese and bagels. you get to try whichever one you want while youre waiting in line oh, and the menu is extensive. They have Barista Parlor coffee as well, so you can get pretty much everything you need for a proper meal. The Wi-Fi is not bad either. parking can be tricky because its a college area with a lot of construction, but if you dont mind walking a block or two its worth it. The wait staff was really friendly and professional too.
I am a transplant New Yorker now living in Nashville. And I can say unequivocally that the bagels, salads, cream cheese (many flavors) are the best I’ve had here in Nashville. I’m told the lox is flown in fresh from Brooklyn! The staff goes out of their way to be sure your order is prepared correctly and on time. Try the “New Yorker” egg/cheese sandwich on a warm sesame bagel and you’ll think you’re sitting in the Carnegie Deli on 7th ave NYC!!
The place looks modern yet they serve some tasty classic sandwich. Great place to grab a power snack during busy days.
Generous not only in Food but Service, Proper Bagel is a must visit every time Im in Nashville. My first visit two years ago laid the foundation, preCOVID the space was bustling with a mouthwatering visual of creative cream cheeses and authentic deli spreads that made choosing just one combination literally impossible (good thing I was with girlfriends that love to share). Passing back through town on a quick trip with my family this time, Id raved to my husband so much that he picked this quicker option (plus Five Daughters 12th Ave location nearby) as his Fathers Day brunch. I preordered (a COVID silver lining IMO) and selected the Nova for my 5.5 year old who loves smoked salmon. When they ran out, instead of just telling us they couldnt fulfill that order, Heather went ABOVE and BEYOND in texting me with options, thinking out of the box (something most places hesitate to do) and finding a solution that put me as the customer first. At pickup, she still apologized for having to make the swap and was eternally gracious about the situation. I opened the bagel fully expecting it to be a lesser portion of salmon as thats what wed agreed to and was blown away, as was my little who could barely finish half, meaning I (for once) got to share with her too. Everything else we ordered (rainbow cream cheese on plain - with sprinkles!, egg, sausage and cheese on everything and rosemary cream cheese on sesame) was delicious, but this level of detail and dedication to getting it right put this visit over the top. When in Nashville, Ill return to Proper Bagel again and again - and well spread (pun intended) the word to stop by and see Heather, who will hook you up no matter the hurdles.
Still very inconvenient when the rest of Nashville is open. Hard bagel way too much cream cheese. Asked for utensils didn’t receive them. No napkins given and they expect you to eat it on the side of the street with virtually no seating. Save your money go elsewhereOh and close to an hour wait for 2 bagels and an OJ.
We ❤️❤️ Proper Bagel! We have ordered bagels/cream cheese/pastries & other things for Christmas morning for several years now & the food is delicious & fresh always. And working with them to get our orders just right is so pleasurable. Thanks Proper Bagel!!!
Very classy place to grab a bagel!
Proper Bagel has the best bagels hands down. I grew up in NJ and I’m super picky about a good bagel. I currently live in Tampa and whenever I fly to the BNA, this is my first stop off the plane. Their homemade pop tarts are also amazing! Keep up the good work proper! Hopefully I’ll get to see you soon!
Much of what I miss about the Northeast revolves around food. (The bread is no good here. No one knows how to cook pasta! What do you mean you dont know what water ice is!! etc. etc.). Proper Bagel solved one of our concerns. Before Proper Bagel you could NOT get bagels and lox in Nashville. Period. With Proper Bagel not only can you get it but, its better than what you would get in most New York Delis. On top of the great food, Heather and fam/crew are amazing people. If I could give them six stars I would. They are that good.
We’ve been patrons of Proper Bagel since the day they opened. We’ve always loved them. When we were pregnant with our twins years ago we moved out to the suburbs but every time we came into Nashville for a doctor appointment it was tradition to stop by afterwords and enjoy one of our favorites from our city life. Haha. When Christmas came this year we knew we wanted a bit of that comfort. We reached out very last minute to coordinate a brunch spread for our family for Christmas and they were more than happy to help make it work even with such little notice. We recommend them to everyone and anyone who asks. Don’t miss this place, it’s simple and so so well done. Yummy comfort food on any day!
First off. Its awesome. BUT. 40 minute waits are unacceptable for a bagel.Got the Gouda/egg add arugula and avocado on sourdough and a dill/scallion everything bagel. Both were AMAZING! Best bagels Ive ever had. No such thing as too much cream cheese.Edit: the smashed sweet potatoes are savory. Quite unexpected but delicious!
I needed help with two events this past month and Heather and the team did not disappoint. The bagels were wonderful, the specialty cream cheeses everyone raved about for a teacher coffee. Then, the presentation for a brunch brought raves the moment people arrived. The trays were lovely, the salmon was excellent ; all the crudités were perfect. The kale salad was the perfect accompaniment to both the salmon and the frittata. I know it has been a rough year with Covid; but, I am very glad Proper Bagel survived! It’s great to have you in the neighborhood.
Excellent bagels, excellent lox, ridiculously great cream cheese, and legit coffee. Wish I could bring this place home with me.
Delicious bagels (best in town, hands down) and very affordable! 😋 great curbside delivery. Once we pulled our car up someone immediately came to our window to help us!
I had the chunky chicken salad ($10) and a 1/2lb order of scallion dill cream cheese ($8). Its good, but pricey. I want to try the lavender honey cream cheese on a bagel next. Theyre in the Belmont University area, so finding parking is difficult. I do appreciate that they are only doing pick up/ curbside orders. Stay safe in this pandemic.
They’re still using covid as an excuse for bad customer service, making people sit outside in 90 degree summer heat. Not impressed.
Good food but it took almost an hour for them to slap some cream cheese on my bagel and bring it out to me.
Dont let the name fool you, they have way more than bagels. I actually hadnt tried this place before because I thought thats all they had. But nope, you walk in and its a glorious array of a salads and any cream cheese you could ever dream of- bagels, too of course. Ive been twice now and got a salad trip the first time. The egg salad is probably the best Ive had. The brussel and kale salads were incredible. I went back the next day (dont judge) and (for the gluten free folks) they make a gf focaccia bread that I got with a rosemary garlic cream cheese. Oh. My. Goodness. It was unreal. They do sell out of this if you dont go early, though.
40 minutes wait for coffee and bagels! Unacceptable
Yeah, ordered online just a basic bacon egg and cheese on everything, was quoted 25 minutes, after about an hour and a half I gave up and hit up the whole foods hot bar only to check out and receive a notification that my order was ready a full hour and 15 minutes after it was quoted. The sandwich was good! The sweet potato stuff was really sweet and savory and ~almost~ made up for a bagel sandwich that cost more than 5 dollars, but the timing was atrocious.
I wish I could give proper bagel 6 stars.. They made me a an extremely happy customer who will be coming back, bringing people with, and recommending highly! The bagels, gourmet cream cheese, bialys (YES! bialys!!) and their premier professinalism/customer care are stellar. Thank you proper bagel for making my day/weekend/week... to infinity, and beyond!
Only real bagel in Nashville, great selection of real cream cheese, and looked lox for a proper Jewish breakfast. I hear the other bagels options are good but I havent tried them. I do enjoy their coffee though. One downside, they are slightly expensive, but they deliver on quality to make it worth the money for a special treat.
40 minute wait for 3 plain bagels.....you could plant your own grain, harvest it, grind it, and make your own bagel in less time.
Fantastic bagels! Definitely the best in Nashville. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for- the bagels are fresh, the choices of cream cheese are endless & their pastries are great. Be prepared for a line out the door!
This is a super find for Nashville.....without the IG hype around it..... food was awesome..... some of the best bagels we have ever eaten....staff we were all amazing... so helpful and polite.Had the “dark and dirty” coffee here..... so good.... hot chocolate and espresso.Added surprise was the “Koloa” cookies they had made for bushfire relief in Australia....
Awesome selection of bagels and delicious cream cheeses! We ordered a lavender honey and a fresh veggie bagel, and we were not disappointed. MAKE SURE YOU ORDER EARLY, because lines can be long and they DO run out of certain bagels in a matter of hours!
There aren’t enough words to describe how wonderful Proper Bagel is. Their cream cheeses and bagels are to DIE for and their staff is even better. Definitely a must visit.
By far one of the best bagels I ever had. I was spoiled with amazing bagels from NYC before moving here and I would say this place is very comparable. Very sweet staff as well!
