Avoid paint department at all costs. Over priced compared to other Benjamin Moore dealers. Most of the paint staff is rude and or slow. Today was the last straw. The gentleman that helped me, taller guy maybe Dan or don, was acting like he was doing me a favor by helping me. Customer service is a very hard job. I have been in customer services for years. However, people like him shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near customers. I would have liked to have given national lumber all my business when I rebuild my deck but I will not and cannot in good conscience ever give National my business. I am sure some people will call this fake news.
Not a single person here has ANY sense of color! My wife and l went in for color help on Saturday and we were treated like we were bothering them. We found a much more helpful store and theyll be getting our business from now on.
They always have what I need. Their very helpful and I highly recommend them.
Some people find the employees attitudes here off-putting. Maybe I get above average treatment because Ive been buying lumber, paint, and hardware here for over 25 years, so I dont find this to be the case.I find National Lumber fine for what they carry... better than the big box home improvement stores for some things, but certainly not the same breadth or depth of merchandise. Curiously, their range of household cleaning supplies is extraordinary.
They are great at painting matching and have a very well stocked paint sundries dept...yahoo!
They have good customer service they helped me with my Festool sander they are an authorized distributor
Absolutely the best and most reliable service. After Home Depot botched an order 3 times from order placement to delivery, National Lumber received and delivered my order in less than 24 hours without additional fees. They even helped place the lumber ordered and stacking it in the appropriate space instead of dumping it on the driveway. This is the way to earn business and consumer trust for life.
Attentive service for non-contractor. Got what I needed.
Incredibly rude staff in paint department. Will spend money else where.
Been going here for years, great family feel at this store and the staff has always been great. Recently went in to order a custom Anderson window and the process was smooth as silk, Mike and the crew were great. Delivery was excellent and the driver was very friendly.
Service is always fast and kind.
People are very helpful and its great being able to run through the yard and grab what i need quickly and get out. If you need a great paint department stop here they know their stuff!
National Lumber stands behind their products. And they keep terrific records. Several thermal glass windows in my house had failed, evidenced by fogging. National Lumber researched the original order and was able to obtain replacements from the mfr. Installing the new sashes took me just a minute or two for each one. This is even more remarkable in that the original builder couldnt finish the house and lost it to a bank. The next builder finished it a couple of years later and I am the second owner since then.
This place has super narrow isles making the shopping experience difficult. That said, the gal I had at the contractors desk was VERY helpful. I did find the deck railing I was looking for. There was a tall, grey haired gentleman also working the register. This guy shouldnt be working with customers. He was a complete crank. Literally yelled at the customers to come to his line and yelled, Ive asked 4 times now, someone coming to my line. So rude!! I still gave 4 stars as selection was good and this seemed to be the only bad apple in the store. The rest we friendly and helpfull!
Great selection. Helpful staff. Good Covid-19 safety
Went to buy paint, waited 15 minutes while 4 employees sitting around talking, I had to ask if anyone worked there!
A well-stocked hardware and lumber storeKnowledgable staff and reasonable pricing.
2021 Edit to Store Manager:December 5, I went in looking for a pipe nipple to replace my rusted Galvanized Pipe for my sink faucet. Employee said Wow, how old is your House! and then said I should go to Fergusons as they do not stock anything like this. So I went to the Orange Big Box store, spoke with an employee there, purchased 3/8 Brass Pipe Nipple and completed my repair. My review stands, if you are a contractor speaking their language, they probably got you covered, but this is NOT the place to go for anything related to home repairs.Original Review:I am always disappointed when I come here and regularly leave empty handed. I always feel like I am going somewhere I am not supposed to and about to get run over by a contractor truck or forklift. The hardware section is decently stocked but metric hardware is not as plentiful as Imperial.
Wonderful local business. Excellent and caring staff. Easy in and easy out.
I have been a loyal customer at National Lumber for many years. Recently, I have decided I can no longer in good conscious continue to give them my business. I have overheard several conversations by a employee where he made racist statements, remarks and comments within earshot of other employees and most importantly customers. I am left in utter disbelief that someone would make statements like that much less at his place of employment.
Great store, had everything you could need!
Great place. Everyone there is very friendly and professional. People at the contractor desk where very helpful.
Solid hardware store, with a broad selection.
My contractor sent me to National Lumber in Newton to pick out a patio door. They have someone who will collect quotes for a door, but no one to tell you what the options are or the differences between the products. A complete waste of time.UpdateHi Margie, yes it was the Newton location. Here’s a synopsis of what happened. I called ahead to ask if I needed to set up a time to meet with someone knowledgeable about your doors and windows. The person on the phone I believe her name was Debbie (very nice) told me that wasn’t necessary and to just come to the store. I arrived and asked someone at the front desk, to the right of the door, who I could talk to. They sent me upstairs. I was able to see a patio door made by Pella and two made by Andersen. However, no one was up there to ask about the doors and no information was available on the doors. AI returned to the front desk and another person told me to go to the back of the store. There I spoke with Jen. She was nice, but didn’t know anything about the different doors and didn’t have any information available. I was looking for a patio door with a low u-factor. She took down the dimensions of the door I needed to replace, and told me she’d get me a quote. I asked her if she knew the different glass options for the doors, she didn’t. She referred me another person. He was a bit more knowledgeable, but clearly busy doing other things and not available to help me. He told Jen to work up two quotes. Neither of which I think fit my needs. At one point I asked him what the difference between the 200, 400 and narrowline doors were and he replied “options.” When I asked what different options were available for the different doors he replied “all of them” and then went back to doing something else on his computer. I left, got in my car and realized I didn’t tell Jen what hardware, or moldings I needed for the door. I went back inside, waited in line and added that information to the quote request. After getting home I got a call from Jen asking how many panes the door needed to be. I still don’t have a quote.Have you ever seen the Dave Chappelle skit about Pop Copy? I feel like my experience in your store could have been the genesis of that skit.
We had an issue with a refund not processing for over two weeks. The refund has now processed and I appreciate the prompt response to our concern. They have also been in touch to confirm we are all set. Im happy they took the initiative to follow up.
Great place for buy hardware and supplies for construction, i go many times in the national lamber.I like.
Rude customer service. Waited in line for an employee to get of the phone with a customer for 10 minutes. He was staring at me and knew I had a question for him. As he got of the phone someone asked him from the back excuse me he looked me straight in the eyes, turned around and started helping the guy behind him. Super rude and unfriendly staff.
I am an average home owner. This store went above and beyond in helping me, especially via email. They answered all my questions in detail and processed my orders rapidly. Delivery was fast and went smoothly, using a small vehicle to get the lumber etc. within feet of the job site. Ben Shepard was especially helpful and provided excellent customer service. They also have in-stock a lot of lumber not kept in stock at the big box stores.
Their paint department is really lacking, if you want good service definitely try elsewhere.
This is based solely based on the paint department. I was being helped, on thruaday by a nice gentleman I think of by the name of Paul. He was extremely slow. I could have delt with that alone. I heard the other person in the paint department say it is time to play no a speak a da. When he was helping a Hispanic painter. How can that employee be this, seemingly, racist and still have a job? That was my first and last time in National Lumber. I will be recommending people go elsewhere than a national lumber or a bables. I have gone to other pure paint stores that sell Benjamin Moore and have gotten far better help and paid less. How can the managment let an employee say no a speak a da? I have had to let an employee and their manger go for less.I would like to thank Margie for reaching out. Did send an email with more details. The owner has not gotten back to me yet. Very disappointing. Someone like the employee probably still has a job. Not a customer friendly place.
Patient customer service. Paul carefully explained the differences in paint colors and sheens. He sent me home with two sets of color charts. I was able to hold the samples next to the floor and walls. He also suggested cleaning products to prepare the wall.
I live next door to a new home construction and several times, when the National Lumber truck came for deliveries, they blocked my driveway completely. No warning or even talking to us about it. What’s worse, there is a side street about 10 feet away that they could use. Sometimes, they did. I finally got sick of it after the fifth or sixth time and complained to a manager in the Newton offense. Response was”Well, the project is almost done. So we shouldn’tbother you anymore.” Suspect they do it to other people too.Update: I have updated my review, as I got contacted by the company. They looked into the issue and provided follow-up. It was done really quickly as well, with direct communication. I really appreciated that and felt that I had to update the review. Thank you, National Lumber team.
Always great service, great products, and great prices.
Great local store, with knowledgeable and experienced staff. Paint department had the specially paint product that the big box hardware store didnt carry.
Requires wearing a mask. Kicked me out of store even though I cannot wear a mask due to medical issues.
Not bad
Ive had mixed experiences here in the past and have avoided coming for years, but contractor doing our house reno sent me to pick decking material. The guy that saw me checking out the azec stand came over to offer suggestions was very friendly and helpful. Pleasantly surprised.
You can drive your truck right up to the lumber supplies. You cant do that at those other places.
Extremely knowledgeable staff that are very friendly and helpful. Its a true local gem. All the pros shop here too, so it can get busy but if you time it right you can walk right up to the counter.
If you build a house or have major renovation Im not aware of a better lumber yard in Boston than National Lumber to work with. My big thanks to Chad who has been a pleasure to work with!
Great service getting paint
Rude, not very clear on deliveries as far as checking in
Great
Was trying to get a door knob and found it a bit expensive. They have a great selection of products though.
I had such a great experience here today when I went to fill my propane tanks. I was greeted by a woman (whose name I regretfully did not get) at the paint counter. She patiently dealt with my transaction then helped me bring the tanks to my car. I was greeted at the propane tank by Andre. He made such pleasant conversation with both me and my daughter. He was wonderfully professional, courteous, and friendly. I will NEVER go anywhere else to fill our propane (i.e. UHaul 1550 VFW West Roxbury). Moreover, in the medical community I am in contact with thousands of patients in the Newton Wellesley area. I will make certain to recommend National Lumber from here on in. Thanks for such a pleasant experience.
Prices are higher than the big box stores. But its convenient. In and out with most household maintenance parts. Lumber is of good quality.
I dont know how much I spent there over two years, but I know its less than the cost it would have been to honor the power washer that lasted less than an hour. I know its less than how much I would have spent if I had continued using for the foreseeable future. Interesting decision but ultimately it will save me from any future issue knowing not to trust them for bigger jobs, hopefully I can save you the same. The only good thing Ill say is that they were honest and upfront about the fact that their process was more important than their customer.I tried to follow up, and was simply asked to leave a message, and nothing came of it. Why take the time to respond to reviews and reach out if youre not going to do anything about the situation. I wasted my time once buying from this company, and then I wasted my time again trying to help them make it right. Fooled me twice so shame on me, but darn if Ill not make that mistake again. Im changing the review from 2 stars to 1 to reflect this.
Diane D. In Kitchen Views was extremely helpful in my bath renovation project.
Literally the worst lumber yard Ive ever been to. Everything from a disorganized mess in the yard to rude and less than helpful staff. If you have the time drive elsewhere and save yourself the aggravation.
You wont find ruder or less helpful store workers anywhere in New England. I have twelve years of experience in woodworking and I came here for just the first time this afternoon because my usual place was not open. I asked a guy working there for some help finding my usual cut and he looked at me like I was an idiot, pointed off in a direction, and said I have no idea what youre looking for, guy, maybe somewhere over there. I wont be back. The prices are also pretty high for the quality you can get there.
Is a little bit disorganized
Very poor service and line of products limited
Consistently slow at the counter astronomical prices and that computers are always broken. Q
We went there for windows and when we asked the what the major differences between brands was (Anderson/Jeld-Wen) he literally told us to google it. He showed us one Anderson window and said its what we wanted. He didnt even mention that Anderson has multiple lines, or what things we should consider when buying windows. Home depot in Waltham was super helpful, dont waste your time here.
Straight out old school lumber yard with a great variety of items inside. Been coming here for years, wouldnt recommend any other place.
Average at best. I only use them because I live down the road and I like supporting small businesses. Their register system is archaic. Takes forever to check out because they go through a multi step process to issue a receipt, especially if you use a credit card. My old neighborhood hardware store was way quicker and they didnt even have a barcode system. They have nothing for fence supplies, not even posts. I wouldnt say the staff is rude but they arent super friendly either.
Good place to find the right things you want.
National is always good about sending over pricing and information in a quick manner. They definitely are a very helpful supplier.
A real hardware store with knowledgeable help
Best way to get propane refills in the area
Very good store, good collection, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Rude and condescending lumberyard. Toxic hyper-masculine work environment, only benefits other hyper-masculine, white older contractors.
Love the guys that work here!
Need to improve customer service
Zero stars .Contractor price for regal select 53 orher stores 43. Avoid! Applying for an account is like applying for a passport!
Great place
Called day before I went. Different story after wasting my lunch hour driving there.
Many good supplies.
They made the wrong paint and made me pay for it
Many stuff, but not what I wanted to see.
Over priced and limited selection on the hardware side, good on paint and lumber.
Great company!
There is not a good service for a pros
They have everything that you might need.
I can never get anyone to help me in their yard and then when I go in to pay, despite several people sitting behind the desk talking about how they spent their weekends, they leave one man to ring you in.
Very good
It was alright
Good
Bad lumber!!!
You can find everything for construction.
Excellent experience
