Wow is all I can say, two visits, two completely different experiences. Based on what we experienced I understand now the complete polar opposites of reviews on this page. Our first trip to Cheese and Crackers was a purposeful drive to Bloomington from Decatur for our groceries. I had discovered C&C online and put it on our list of places to visit that day. While they were sold out in the fish case, the gentleman there was polite, helpful, spent time showing us how to order online, talking about their partnership with the Olive Bin etc. Even though we did not walk away with the seafood we had hoped to purchase we were not at the least upset that it was not available or felt that our trip was in vain. He had mentioned that on Fridays during lent they usually ordered extra fish so we decided to make a second trip on Friday to see what they had. Shopping this store was our only destination and reason for this trip. We arrived mid afternoon to find the from door propped open, a young child seated on the counter (shoes and all) and this time a young woman behind the counter. The child was obviously on a very (VERY) loud phone call on some sort of tablet. When we asked about fish, the woman explained that she did have some extra but it had not been cut. As we attempted to ask questions, she conversed with whomever was on the phone. She seemed a bit put out by our inquiry and hurriedly read through a list of what was available.. so quickly actually that we could not understand what she was saying.. nor could we hear over the volume of the childs phone call.. the clerk continued to interact with the personal phone call to the point that we were unsure if she was answering our questions or conversing with that individual. This went on for a bit of time and to tell the truth at 26.00 a lb I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting, portion recommendations and prep suggestions (all information that the gentleman was happy to discuss on our previous visit). Finally after trying to compete with the volume of the phone call, realizing that she was more interested in discussing how many girl scout cookies they had sold with this person on the phone, concerned over health standards allowing a child to sit on the counter, shoes on the counter and really starting to get a huge headache over noise along with being treated as if we were an inconvenience, we left without purchasing anything. We were the only customers in the shop this entire time, it is not as if our inquiries were keeping her from making other sales, nor were our questions any different than information that was freely offered on our first visit. A trip wasted, that will not be made again. A shame, as their selection of cheese, meats and orderable fish was cause for excitement, but definitely not worth what we experienced on this day.

Ive been wanting to visit this place for quite some time. We finally made it, after a trip to Scratch brewing down in Ava, Ill.The main reason for the stop was to check out the selection of cured meats. Its getting harder and harder to find proper cured meats nowadays. Aside from a few places outside of Chicago, finding proper cured meats could be pretty tough.Theres a few places in the West Loop area (of Chicago) that do a nice job, TCC (in Plainfield, Ill.) is pretty good too. Cochon Butcher (in NoLa), is real nice. Domenica, also in NoLa, does a fine job with their cured meats. Ive never had the privilege to visit New York or Europe to try various cured meats. But, within the States I make it a point to seek out proper cured meats.Ive been lucky enough to have once been addicted to Iberico de Bellota. Ive done side by side tastings of the three different grades of Iberico Jamon and have also enjoyed Iberico Paleta. Within Iberico jamon I can say that all producers are not the same either, though its great to taste through the differences. There are certainly a bunch of great smaller producers as well. Along with homemade charcuterie. Such as Soppressata, Coppa, Slicing Chorizo, Guanciale, etc, etc. I say all this only to describe my passion for cured meats. I still have much to learn on my palete and in making fermented sausages. So I arrive in anticipation with my traveling family. On the website it show they have Boars Head meats for their sandwiches. I think okay, thats the main brand that we buy for our family...thatll do. Plus I can get some decent meats and cheeses. I quickly gaze around, I see a decent sized cheese selection, meats seemed a little scarce in quantity....and while I appreciate all that La Quercia has done in reputation, I think their meats fall a bit short. But, Iberico is always good and I spotted a few nice fermented sausages as well.Ready to order, I ask if we could get some sandwiches. We were informed that they only had enough supplies to make two sandwiches. What? We were here mid- day, traveled about 40 minutes off course in order to order stuff here. We have five people, I ask for clarity. In disbelief I asked, you only have enough for two sandwiches...we have five people. You dont have enough? NopeTotally miffed, I thanked the lady for her time and we were off to go get lunch elsewhere.
