I love living in a town with actual brick and mortar, independent music shops. I have visited Downtown Sounds to buy/trade/sell instruments, have service and repairs, and to purchase accessories like strings, reeds, picks, and replacement parts. I know when I walk in that someone will be able to help me find what I need. Since becoming a co-op, I feel that the focus of high quality service, and individual attention has really shined. The new layout makes it easy to ogle their quality merchandise, and they’ve upped their game with new partnerships with the top brands on the market. Cheers!

I had a great experience shopping for a guitar here. I was given help when I needed it and the freedom to try anything. Staff was super friendly and accommodating (I believe one of their names was Garret ?). Would absolutely come here again!

Found the guitar I was looking for and liked the idea of buying from a worker owned co-op. They shipped fast and the guitar was packaged really well and set up, with some unexpected nice surprises thrown in. This shop is aces. Highly recommend!

I recently bought a used bass at Downtown Sounds. The staff was extremely helpful, set me up in a room to try out the instrument, didn’t bother me the whole time. When I was done I was asked how I liked it and the guy answered my questions with thoughtful and knowledgeable answers. I was able to make an offer online and texted back and forth to agree on a price. All in all a most pleasurable experience. Buying an instrument, for me, can be stressful. The price, do I really need it, all the second guessing myself. So having calm knowledgeable non-pushy assistance was great. I’ve been coming to Downtown Sounds since the early 70’s, and am so glad the business is still in existence. Thank you for a positive experience. Also I was told I have 2 months to get it set up to my liking if needed. But it’s pretty well set up as is.

Just bought an electric Yamaha piano, at Downtown Sounds in Northampton. Mike showed me a 73 key, 6 octave piano. He clearly explained the basic values of the piano: not too heavy, weighted keys, grand piano sound, hold pedal . Clean top look- not all cluttered with buttons. Good info, no pressure. Downtown Sounds is where I go when I need guitar work, and I love shopping there too. The staff are great; they know their stuff and they never make me feel like I need to prove my street-cred in order to feel welcome in the store. They are invested in the success of the store and it’s reflected in how they work with the customer. There is no reason whatsoever for me to consider not shopping here anymore, so they’ll continue to be my first stop.

I have been shopping here for almost 30 years, and the new business model as a cooperative has shifted into a much higher level of professionalism, options for musicians of all skill levels, and helpfulness. Get your music needs met here, you’ll be happy you did.

I had a problem with my old (neglected) Fender Deluxe amp that I discovered the day before a gig with my band. I contacted Tom and he put me in touch with Howard who is a wizard amplifier expert. I brought the amp in at 130 and two hours later had a restored amp which has never sounded better. Kudos to the whole team: expert, friendly, timely and professional service!

Respect and courtesy are more than slogans anytime I go to Downtown Sounds. Email, Facebook, phone, or in person...the staff goes out of their way to make sure my questions are answered. Im a beginner at guitar, and they have made the entire process since I first bought my first guitar in September 2020 a comfortable and engaging process. I keep going back for supplies, lesson, and now for a new guitar. The folks at the store were all super helpful and ordered a guitar I wanted . It got here quicker than I expected and it sounds and plays great.

I needed an audio interface and so I gave a call . They took their time with me on the phone and made me feel comfortable asking about the product . I ordered it and went to the store where I was welcomed by all the employees . One of them helped me out with some questions about amplifiers . Again, just generous with their time and knowledgeable . Will be headed back there again . Not many music stores like this around anymore .

I called every place I could to buy a guitar today. It had to happen today due to a house of 10 people and 6 of them being sick with covid. My husband and I are grateful for the associate who answered my phone call. I bought a guitar for a great price while waiting for my husband to be discharged from the emergency room. The salesperson put gloves and a mask on and brought the guitar out to the Parkin lot so we could have the guitar for my husband as soon as possible. #musicheals and My hope is that he will now sit still and keep his oxygen levels up now that he has a new guitar to play. Good Music Store. Nice selection of guitars. Honestly, the selection of Fender Guitars in this store is better than any Guitar Center. Loads of sheet music to select from. A lot of unique guitars. More character than any Guitar Center.

Wasn’t able to put down 0 stars unfortunately. Purchased a Yamaha p515 for my daughters Xmas present and got a confirmation on its purchase. Retuned from a fishing trip to find that it was sold to someone else. No discount on another piano or any compensation was offered, and I missed out on any Black Friday deals now. ‘Sorry bout that ‘seems like bad business response. Merry Xmas to you too, dude!

Got my old tube amp repaired in short order and it works and sounds great. The tech was knowledgeable, capable and friendly, but a little pricey. Considering how rapidly and well the repair was done, all in all it was worth it.

I just moved to the area last yer and I love this store! Ive gotten a Baritone Uke, a Cajon, 2 sturdy music stands, tuners, capo, music books. They have everything a performers and teachers need. Great old school musical instrument shop, with a focus on guitars and percussion. A good selection of ukes. Also some bass, mando, keyboards, and banjo. Repair shop and lesson rooms in the basement. Very reasonable repair prices and pricing on instruments, amps, effects, and accessories is not bad. Very friendly and unpretentious staff that are happy to chat about music.

When it was owned by the Blumenthals, they had a decent selection of mandolins including some mandolas. Since then, their selection of instruments has become very mediocre.

Too busy playing with their cell phone to turn around and help me spend some money. Im in the area once a year and this Saturday had the same result as last year. Money spend on a telecaster they had and they couldnt be bothered to turn around and help me. It wont happen again third time.

Yeah this place is really nice. Personally I dont know much about my electric guitar, but Im in the process of learning. The storekeepers behind the cash dont seem like theyre out to screw you, and the tech knows his stuff. I brought in a Washburn Nuno (N2 Signature Edition) that was improperly setup from when I bought it at Guitar Center. The tech charged me $55 for action, intonation, neck relief, and a nut adjustment. The repairs went well but I was also told my higher frets (12 -21) would be off. Some do not sound because the frets are all over the place. I was quoted another EXTRA $55 to have the frets leveled and such but at the time I do not think that it was worth it, or it shouldve at least have been discounted since I was getting my guitar setup there anyways. I am thinking of going back to get the frets redone if the price can possibly be lowered, but well see. I might call the GC back home and see what they charge. Overall great experience though, I would recommend.P.S. Turnaround time for the full repair was about a week and a half, so not bad at all but there can be people who need it quick, wouldnt hurt to just ask.
