πi have a problem with HRO!!! Im a pretty new ham and would love to get more into it.... or in to it to begin with!!! But every single time i come over here im in my big truck and its closed!!!!i always go up and look in the windows and check it out knowing full well by the time the doors open i will be miles away from here and without any idea when im coming back!!! Never fails.... thats what i get for being here in a big truck.... at least its empty though maybe if i win the lottery i could fill up my truck.... 53β of everything!!!! Im giving a 5 star review even though i havent been inside but am eager to check it out!!! 73βs
Above and Beyond Customer Service ! This store went above good customer service ! I will take all my Armature Radio biz to these folks in the future ! I have been in the retail business for years, with some the largest in North America !! GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AN ASSET !!!!! Not a cubicle phone in a slave labor country far away that could care less about you !!
Edit: Jenny called me after I posted the original review, apologized for the issue and immediately shipped a replacement unit. Like the other reviews have said, its been great customer service and I would definitely shop here again.Power supply was damaged before it left the shop. The larger outer box it shipped in showed zero damage, but the PS box inside was deformed, like it had been dropped off the shelf. Upon opening the inner box, the styrofoam protection was cracked and the power supply case was bent. The damage seems to be limited to a slightly bent case and it looks like it functions properly when I turn it on with no load. I would like to use it immediately so returning it isnt a great option but having a company ship a damaged box without checking the contents beforehand is disheartening. Hopefully theres no unseen damage that manifests once it has a load on it.
Nick at the Oakland HRO was very helpful and knowledgeable. Keep up the great work HRO.
Love this place. Its 1 hour away but my $2000 order of radios and antennas was within 1% of the Amazon price. Support our dealers or they will disappear like Radio Shack.
Hi folks, all my comments below were a long time ago with the previous crew. The mgr moved to Idaho, the store has new mgr and team. Wow! They are on top of it!! The store is fully stocked, I have no difficulty finding exactly the items I want. A pleasure to shop there. Thanks folks! I really appreciate local retail. Cliff*** previous 2 star review ***Sometimes they have what I want, most times its a matter of finding something not quite good enough. The employees need better training. Unhelpful at finding stock items. Dont know much about ham radio.Literally took 45 minutes to ring up 5 items! And then took 15 minutes to issue $3 refund for something overcharged.Meanwhile several customers are standing around waiting to get rung up. First rule of retail, dont keep ready to pay customers waiting!!
A dangerous place for your wallet. Good selection, knowledgeable, friendly staff. I went in here to buy my first radio, a little handheld. Was given good advice on both the radio and a better antenna. After I got my General class license, returned for a great deal on a base station. Also got a good dual band mobile from them.
Good selection of ham radio equipment.
Great selection and knowledgeable stuff. Good access from freeway and plenty of parking. Wish for better hours. And if you look online for inventory - better call in before heading - sometimes inventory is not updated. But nevertheless - always a good experience shopping here.
A little hard to find and limited parking nearby. But great local supply for when you do not want to wait for delivery. They also ship and have good prices.
Got a stand-up charging base for a portable HT at a good price and Nick was the guy (manager)
The person I spoke with was super kind, patient with all my questions and asked colleagues when I asked questions outside of his scope, showed radios in my price range and didnt try to upsell. I called back with more questions still super kind. When I have the opportunity to purchase a radio or gear Ill be here. Im sure this location has been open for more than 30 years, when I was a kid Id hold on to there catalogs to educate me (before the netz), 20 years later I picked another catalogπ, hopefully by 2020 Ill have a license and radio. Dont procrastinate like Ive been doing.
Good selection of radios and gear. Great place to try out rigs. Lots of stuff is behind the counter, so hard to browse some items. Also a bummer that they are only open during traditional business hours, when I (and most others hobbyists?) are at work.
Same unenthusiastic, mute employee helped me out again. After shopping here, you can feel the disdain they have for customers. Youre on your own as far as product demos, since employees have little product knowledge or desire to talk to you. They got the products you want, so youre gonna have to get a thick skin and get in there and force them to take your money. Never mind if they dont greet or smile at you, you drove all the way here to drop some Benjamins. Unless you can wait for deliver, you may have no choice but to shop here. I agree with other people who have similar experiences and gave a similar review. I thought the Art Bell show was a strange substitute for low key retail shopping music. Weird.
Knowledgeable staff and reasonable prices. As a newly licensed ham I appreciate being able to have a conversation about my prospective purchases before buying them. No hard sell and lots of info sharing makes the difference.
Awesome place to go to for any of your ham radio, cb, marine, scanner, antenna needs. I needed a specific antenna for a project, and even though I had very little knowledge of what I wanted, needed or was doing, the helpful staff here walked me through my options, advised me on what I needed, asked what I wanted to spend and then worked to get me under budget. Thanks! Definitely coming back as soon as I need any radio gear in the future.
Small place but packed with everything you need as a ham radio operator (and probably more). A bit hard to find but also pretty much the only such store anywhere near as far as I could tell.
What a let down. I let my expectations grow as I got closer from southern Oregon to San Francisco, but this HRO was too busy stocking shelves to be veryhelpful. Coming from a place with no ham radio support stores, I did hope for playing radio. But, ended up with no Morse Code key... as the one offered was $150. Better luck on the Web.
They have a lot of stuff except for nice or ver helpful or smiling sales associates. If you come in knowing what you want cool but help is not coming without frustration. The require too much info when you make any purchase. CDL, card info and if they could a DNA sample. Better off buy whatever from the internet!
They have all my favorite toys!!
+2 stars for consistently friendly customer service reps every time.Every time I go to a HRO, I really hope for more of a kid in a candy store experience, but Im disappointed. Id love to see more stuff set up and have more interactive displays -- instead of 50 antennas in packages leaning against a wall, set one up, or at least prominently show a picture of what it will look like assembled. I want to come in, play with radios, and learn something new.Pricing: many items appear to be significantly cheaper at discount online locations. To compete with that, the retail location needs to take advantage of the fact that the customer can interact with what you are selling, rather than just walking through shelves stacked with boxes of what they can already find online.Selection: when I asked for the most popular mode of digital radio, I was told DMR, but there was only one model available in stock. Id also hope to find more basic electronic components, Arduino, Raspberry Pi (not part of a larger kit), part 15 radio modules like xbee/zigbee, and other radio and electronics project supplies.Id like to see a schedule of upcoming events hosted by the store, in-store demos, classes, social stuff, whatever it takes to draw interest to the hobby and customers to the store.
They are closing in June.
If you are an amateur radio operator this is a great place to get your equipment.
I walked into HRO Oakland on a busy Saturday several days after passing my General exam. I was greeted with enthusiasm, sincere congratulations, and a warm welcome to Ham radio. Staff, especially Kevin Quinn, were incredibly knowledgeable and patient with my questions about antenna and ways to better utilize my handheld. They also offered suggestions for setting-up my first hamshack without any pressure to purchase anything and in a couple cases steered me toward the best value at lower price points. thank you!
The place to go in the East Bay for amateur radio equipment and supplies. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Great prices.
Found an adapter so I can use myVX6 with my base antenna can nowget into 145.39 with .3w from Tracy. Also got some 15A Anderson power poles. Always goog service.
Just got my ham license and I came here to but my first mobile radio. Im on a budget and was looking as a very particular price point. I was happy to see they had radios in the price range I was in. I ask the sales guy about 3 radios and his answer was theyre all crap. He point over to a kenwood that was around $600. I told him I wasnt looking to spend that kind of money on my first radio. He didnt have any enthusiasm to answer any questions about anything less. I will be purchasing online.
The only place that still carries ham equipment and components. Super helpful.
Many radios on display to try before buy. Decent stock of MFJ items. Opens at 10 AM.
They do not like black people.but the store is good tho I bought some things from them ...I miss radio shack.
I love this place. Great selection of equipment and an incredibly knowledgeable staff.
If youre interested in short and long range radio /recievers, this place is for you. Independently operated
Great source for ham radio enthusiasts, huge selection of radios, antennae, and components. Very knowledgeable staff.
Not necessarily the easiest place to find, but they had all they had the 2M/440 HT I was after! Good service and knowledgeable staff.
Kinda hard to get there, but I was in and out and got exactly what I needed. Staff was super helpful and friendly.
This is a great store with working radios and lots of bits and bibs, when I am in the Bay area I try and make the trip to this store.
This place is great, its hard to imagine that places like this still exist.
I use to go there when i lived in SF but my last trip from hawaii to go to that store was very very disappointing the person behind the counter was not helpfull acted like i was bothering him for being there! Tried to ask questions not much help there either other person behind counter just sat there even when some one else walked in! I will no longer go there i will deal with the san deigo store and tell ever one about my experiences!!!
I went to Pacificon and bought a comet antenna from Ham Radio Outlet and was told it was back order, but should get it in 3 weeks. I said that was fine. Waited for 4 weeks, but no antenna. Sent several emails, but no response. Finally called the Oakland store and they apologized for the lack of response from the email. They informed me that emails were sent to corporate and so they do not know what happened, but they checked my order and said the antenna should be shipped 11/28/2016. This is almost 6 weeks after I ordered it. Today is December 3rd. No antenna. Not sure what to do at this point.JohnKk6vcw
