I try to support local businesses as much as possible, including when it comes to my hardware needs. I try to only go to the large chain hardware stores as a last resort. I try to either go to the Ace hardware at the intersection of Central Ave. & Willow Creek in Portage or the Ace hardware near Central Ave. & Ripley in Lake Station. On Monday morning 10/25/21I pulled into the parking lot to the Ace hardware on Central & Willow a few minutes after they were scheduled to open. The lights were on and I saw a woman who worked there approach the front. As I got out of my vehicle to approach the door I tried motioning to her to see if they were actually open, but I got no acknowledgement and I felt like she ignored me. When I got to the door a huge dog (well over 100 pounds) came to the door and before I even tried to pull the door open the dog began barking ferociously, so logically I didnt even try to open the door. The woman came to the door still ignoring me with no acknowledgement of my presence and took the dog away. I tapped on the door to see if she even noticed me and as she was taking the dog away her first and only acknowledgement of me was to rudely roll her eyes at me and raise her finger as to say dont you dare knock on my door again. That was the first and only time she even attempted to communicate anything to me. After that without a second thought I got back in my vehicle and drove away. I will no longer support that Ace hardware but will support the one on Central and Ripley in Lake Station. I dont know what caused such rude behavior but at this point I dont really care. Not only will I not knock on your door, I wont ever walk through it again. If you cant be even remotely courteous to someone who comes to support your business, why are you even in business to begin with.

The old man needs to retire!! That simple… rude, and looks like he’s got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the grave. Don’t implement a no bathroom policy due to covid but not asking to wear masks.

Today I was trying to shop small box. I had a ace gift card. It wouldnt scan so the kid went to talk to someone in back came back and said they couldnt take it if it wont scan. Even though it has a I D # and pin number.

Great alternative to the larger stores. I went there for a couple specific size screws and the staff were very nice and accommodating!

I went to two other stores in town looking for Scotts Winterguard and had no luck. I decided to check Ace online and was pleasantly surprised they had some in stock. Placed my order online and was able to pick it up the next day. A lot less hassle than dealing with the larger home improvement stores.

As Karen as it sounds, I will never be shopping here again. Absolutely nobody in the store wearing a mask. Customers walk with no mask and get greeted by the cashier whose mask is hanging off her ear.

Kind of a cluttered looking store....could be neater.but I did find what I needed.

Was disappointed that what was in the sales ad they had no supply whatsoever of it in the store. Even though online it said it was stocked in the store.

I paid in advance for a screen for my window I called its been 2 1/2 weeks and they had not even started it I would not recommend this place for anything. I ask for the owner it is 5 oclock at night and hes gone all I got was they are 3 1/2 to 4 weeks to make a screen if he truly a respectful business he would be in there catching things up I will never do business or buy anything from the store and I assure you I will tell everybody I know to go somewhere else that really wants to be in business I give it a 0 star Into add to it I had to supply them with my receipt number because they couldnt find mine after me paying for it so that I could get a refund on my credit card again would recommend them to do anything

Where do I start on how amazing this places. Every time I walk in I am and immediately greeted with someone asking what I need help with and its usually a long list. I work on a lot of old motorcycles from the seventies and they always have all the rare bolts I need! If you ever need help with anything honestly it seems like anything I can imagine stop their 1st ! Do not bother going to big Box stores they just do not have the knowledge of the Ace Hardware employees I thank them again for everything they do for us!

Whenever I want that home town feel and getting advice I can feel confident about I always stop here. I know when leave Ace I have the knowledge and the parts I need to get the job done.Some of the other big box stores lose the customer relationship.

I live in portage very close to this ace hardware and have had bad experiences 5 out of 5 times going into this store. The employees are rude and not helpful i will always drive to lake station ace hardware as they are knowledgeable and helpful.

Great place with friendly and extremely helpful staff. They arent car salesmen trying to upsell you on anything. Tell them what you want, they show you where it is, and you check out.I also appreciate that theyre open until 7pm. Other Ace hardware places in this area seem to close around 5 or 6.They dont have the same selection as Menards and the prices are sometimes a little higher, but paying a couple extra cents to save yourself 30 minutes wandering around the big box store is totally worth it.They also have good prices on propane exchanges if you need a new tank.Not always but there is sometimes a dog laying in the middle of an aisle. Hes a sweetheart and totally chill. I have dander allergies, but they keep the place clean and havent had any issues.Im writing this review during the summer of the coronavirus pandemic. I was a little disheartened to find out they dont require customers to wear masks. I wear mine, but Id feel a little safer if they required customers to mask up.Im young and it wont stop me from shopping there. However, if youre at risk and worried about such things, you may want to have someone else get stuff for you or go to Menards where masks are required and the building is a lot larger.I hope this helps.

Love there willing to help. If yhey dont have what you need, they will order it. Prices are a little higher than the box stores, but you can get the service you deserve. I think that its worth it.

Dropped off patio door screen that had small hole in it 2x2. After a week and still no phone call went in and still had not been fixed!! Got my money back had a friend do it, took 5 MINS. And you wonder why these small businesses are going under.

I wish I could give zero stars. On March 1,2018 I picked up the truck I had reserved. They tried to charge me, even though I had paid in full online. I finally got that resolved, then I saw the truck. I didnt think it looked like a 15 foot truck, and when I had it measured sure enough it was only a 10 foot truck . I called the store to see if I could either get a 15 foot or be refunded the difference between the 10 and 15 foot. I was moving from Portage IN to SW Missouri, so I needed to make it in 1 trip. I ended up leaving several things behind, including my bike, my daughters bed, a couch and chair, and my microwave. Shame on Portage Ace Hardware.

My truck rental experience was truly disappointing from start to finish.The staff - all 3 we interacted with - were rude and acted like my rental was an inconvenience. I received a confirmation call from another location than the one I had chosen and was initially given a pick-up time earlier than I had requested (or could arrange for); when I expressed my schedule needs for a later time, I was made to feel like I needed to accommodate the rental location rather than the other way around. When my partner went to pick up the truck, the staff again acted like the rental was a bother and inconvenience. When the cashier had issues handling the payment, a manager was brought over whose offensively foul language and abrasive attitude was wholly unprofessional. When we later returned the truck, we again we met with an overall lack of communication and rudeness when we were spoken with. When I expressed concern/confusion and requested clarification on the $40 difference in my final bill, I received an attitude for having asked (complete with loud sigh and an eye roll) and an abrupt explanation of miles - largely because I had to travel 20min out of my way to the rental location.Overall, I would say the customer service was truly abysmal and the truck decent. I would choose U-Haul again, but would rather use my own vehicle than rent a truck from this location again.
