I passed by Blue Kangaroo by chance and thought their patio/parklet in the shade looks very nice so I sat down to get my overdue morning coffee. Their service is friendly and coffee is quite decent too. It looks like they roast their own beans in house, an independent coffee shop is always pretty cool.
The absolute best baristas in the entire world work here! Their consistency & quality is unmatched. Also I am 100% sure there is no better tasting espresso in or around Portland. I am very happily addicted & infinitely thankful for the continued existence of our blue kangaroo
Not one to leave bad reviews but it’s frustrating to spend money on a coffee & sit outside for 15mins while they fill online orders that’s haven’t arrived yet, they also seemed indifferent to me when I asked about my order, I ended up asking them not to make it & leaving out my $6 bucks. My advice is to order ahead although I don’t know if this is good coffee I never got my drink!
Cute and friendly staff with good choices. I got the orange mocha but didnt get as much orange flavor ad Id have liked, but everyone was great, it was cute, and had vegan pastries.
Good people. Good coffee. 😌
Delicious coffee, and a friendly local business owner. Currently, the street is blocked off and theyre are Bunch of tables set up in the street that they share with the food carts nextdoor. Great space.
Coffee was really great and it was fast. I walked there from our house down the road. There is a really great outdoor seating area, some is covered and some uncovered. I got a plain latte and brought home an almond flat white for my partner. I also grabbed an almond croissant and monkey bread with cream cheese frosting on top. Both were delicious however the monkey bread was definitely the hit. I recommend to pop it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to get that out of the oven feel. 10/10 we will be back! P. S. They are dog friendly!
I have been a customer of Blue Kangaroo since they opened 12 years ago and I loved the place. The Roo as it affectionately became known, was a great place to hang out and drink delicious coffee and I became friends with the owners. They were very involved in the Sellwood community, the local schools and many fundraisers for various charities were held there. Their shop was sold a year ago and I continued to go there occasionally to support the new owners but clearly the place didnt have the same vibe. Now I find out the new owner has refused to make the remaining payments to my friends for their business. This is shameful and suddenly their coffee is bitter. Id rather drink Starbucks. How sad this cool little neighborhood coffee hangout is no longer.
The chai spice tea tasted like cinnamon water. Worst chai jve ever had, and Ive had airport chai.Response: Yes, anything but what you gave me. I ordered Almond Milk Chai and got cinnamon water. Literally undrinkable. My mom and sister got the sweet while I got the spicy, and somehow the sweet was worse when I tried theirs. Get a new recipe lol
I had a double shot Cubano. It was pretty good, a little acidic. It was busy, early Saturday afternoon. Which is normal for a place at that time, but the tables were left dirty, and its pretty cramped.Im sure its great for the people who want a coffee place that is kid friendly. But its not a great place to get work done if youre looking for that kind of atmosphere.
It is such a treat to get coffee here! They make the best lattes with delicious foam! And the baristas who work here are so nice and friendly!
Crooks own it now! Stay away as the karma train will be making a stop here at some point.
Outdoor and take out service only. Safe practices, good and fast service.
Nice place but not the best chai latte.
Always great. Wonderful and ever so friendly staff.
To be fair their menu only offers whole pounds but I explicitly said I only needed a half pound to add cold brew to my homebrew. I was offered 3/4 of a pound as a minimum and charged for a pound. Extra star for good consistent custom ground coffee.
Great coffee. Must try.
Try the rose latte! Omg!
If you like good coffee its here.
AMAZING!!!! service is great, all the staff are very friendly and the food and drinks are delicious.😋
Good covid practices for ordering and picking up. Some interesting expresso drinks but only ordered americano, which was standard. Very polite staff and covered outdoor( not heated) seating area. Would visit again to try something more unique
Delicious coffee and treats!
Cubano lattes are my favorite!
Very friendly service and great coffee is to be found in this humble and casual coffee establishment. There is a fair bit of seating room but this spot can get busy and crowded at times. There is not a very big selection of eats but I got by with a bagel and cream cheese, while my partner had a muffin.
What a wonderful coffee shop! Fantastic service and great brew. Could not recommend enough!
I went to Blue Kangaroo last summer and have not stopped thinking about their Cubano Latte. Truly, it was maybe the best latte I’ve ever had. The place is super cute and simple, i spent a couple of hours there writing and plan to be back soon now that I’m back in Portland and craving that latte.
Must say..Pretty decent coffee. It compares to all the bigger coffee chains.
Amazing coffee, kind staff, and good vibes. So very grateful yall were open on Thanksgiving. Best Dirty Chai Ive ever had - the perfect start to my day. Thank you so much! 😊
Great coffee.
WOW!! I had an AMAZING cup of French roast! The BOSS is very kind saw it first hand in her interactions with an employee!
I was told this place had great coffee so a friend & I had to try it for ourselves. We went on Sunday afternoon about 2:00 & the place was full of people visiting & enjoying their beverages. The decor is funky, eclectic & very inviting. I ordered an almond milk latte to stay, which came in a cool retro glass. The espresso was so smooth I didnt need any sweetener. I enjoyed it so much I ordered a second! You can tell they roast their own beans with great care by the wonderful taste. This is my new favorite coffee shop. The only thing better would be one in my neighborhood.
Wearing masks is GREAT during this pandemic..every food service place should do it...but if you TOUCH it, then touch customers food and coffee..it totally defeats the purpose! your employees are constantly touching their masks :/please teach them about masks and how to wear them and how they are mainly for keeping IN virus and get contaminated all day ...especially if you touch them..put virus on gloves then on my food..it would be better if they wore none then the way they are using gloves & masks
Best mocha on my way to work, hands down! They changed their pastry vendor recently so their pastries are meh now but their coffee is still excellent. They also have a great neighborhood atmosphere and friendly service.
Great coffee and service. Thankfully they also have some gluten free options from New Cascadia Traditional. Just wish they had a few more options to choose from since the selection is pretty limited. But this is certainly now one of my favorite coffee spots. Only thing I dont like is that they do not have hemp milk as a dairy alternative for those of us that are lactose intolerant. They only have almond, soy, and coconut milk.
This is a great local coffee shop. Its like a pub, but serves coffee and locals are always meeting here. They roast their own beans and the coffee is delicious. This is also a family place with kids in strollers frequenting it. After your coffee or with a to go cup you can enjoy an eclectic mix of retail stores and no big box is in sight. This area of Sellwood is known for its antique stores.
I stopped by here while visiting a nearby spice shop and their house coffee was exceptional! Not bitter or burnt at all! The service was friendly and fast and the place had a very relaxed and casual feel. Perfect for a Sunday morning!
Im so bummed to even write this. This was my favorite spot in my neighborhood, hands down. I always loved the employees and enjoyed their attitude and work ethic compared to other coffee shops in the area. Unfortunately, some, what appear to be new hires are starting to convince me otherwise. My partner went in to buy 2 lattes and a gluten free muffin last weekend. The girl tried to charge him $27, he pressed the 15% tip button without thinking and then as it went through he realized the math couldnt have been right (The girl was very offended by him catching this for some reason). The girl then said she changed it to the correct amount, without ever giving him a new total. Then he asked about the 15% tip he had given, since it wouldnt have been the correct amount. This was when the girl got increasingly more and more unprofessional and rude. She asked him, if he wasnt comfortable with that tip. He was confused and was trying to explain that she wouldnt get 15% of 30 dollars, when the amount didnt cost that much and then gave in and said it didnt matter since she was making a scene. Then this same girl decided that she would make the last latte and bring it out to him to once again engage in a very strange way. She went on to say she had changed his tip amount to the correct amount (still never telling him a total and having a rude attitude like she was entitled to a large tip or something?). He told her he no longer felt comfortable and that he had asked her to stop messing with charges on his card and she did it anyways (all along, I repeat NEVER STATING A TOTAL EVEN WHEN HE ASKED). He tried to make a light hearted joke to her and her response was, Well you dont have to tip you know. Everything about it was just strange. That was when he put up his arms and said, I dont know whats going on here but Im leaving.I wasnt going to say anything about this, (I NEVER write reviews online) because we all have off days. I watched as this girls demeanor became stranger and stranger from a distance. I thought, maybe shes having a bad day. But after going to get a latte this morning and running into the same sort of attitude (the exact opposite of the reason I like this coffee shop) I decided to say something. I hope that you all are hiring people who know how to live out your culture. Because honestly, Im starting to think that I might have to find a new coffee shop to frequent. Not all of your employees are rude and entitled but turns out, enough of them are to lose my business.
Great staff. Great espresso. Really great. Their roast for espresso is just about the perfect blend of smooth and bright, woody and fruity. One of the best espressos anywhere. And, it is truly a kid friendly place - they have a little play area for the tiny ones. The vibe of the place is really warm. Highly recommended. If you’re in the Sellwood area, do visit them.
This is hands down the best coffee in Sellwood, possibly Portland, and Id wager Oregon. The fact that the coffee is consistently delicious and the environment is a perfect balance of warm and welcoming but still has the hum of a busy coffee shop makes this the perfect place to spend my mornings. If your in the neighborhood, it is worth stopping in.
Friendly staff and great coffee. What more.do you need?
Awesome neighbor spot. The care and detail given the coffee selections is special. Eclectic interior especially fitting of the neighborhood. Service is great and staff is fun.
Decent coffee. Fun funky vibe. Good food cart right across the street. Feels very old school authentic neighborhood coffee.
Nothing like a Blue Kangaroo on a snowy day. I love this coffee shop and proudly support them whenever I am near. Great coffee, great people. Highly recommend!
My favorite coffee in the world is made by these small batch roasters in the Sellwood neighborhood. Ive taken their French Roast blend with me to Hawaii, Tokyo, Italy, and Portugal. They make a wonderful pour over, the shop is warm and cozy, and the staff is helpful and friendly. The only problem is that they close too early!
Great place to stop by and get some work done. The coffee was spot on and the service was as to be expected. A favorite for this area.
Mostly I just stop by to pick up bags of their coffee, which is far and away my favorite that Ive come across so far. Love all their dark roasts. Its a nice spot for sitting and enjoying a cup and a nibble as well though. Definitely recommend it to anyone.
I have been here a few times and the usually great cappuccino did not happen today. A bit too busy but it should not affect quality.I would recommend asking and calling peoples names - its confusing when busy which of the drinks belong to whom. Grand Central does it, despite of being a chain, and it feels friendly and neighborly.
Very kind staff, delicious coffee, great atmosphere. Donuts are pretty good too
I really like their chai tho it is on the pricier side. Also like the inside for studying although it is smaller, so finding a table could possibly be an issue during busy times. Friendly and helpful staff.
Everything good you could ask for in a coffee shop, none of the bitter. Incredible service, lively family-friendly atmosphere, and ample workspace at non-peak hours. Their drip coffee comes with one free refill, making this place the most worthwhile coffeeshop in downtown Sellwood. If the Sellwood Morning blend is available, go for it!! ⛽☕
Been going with family for years and the coffee is amazing. Shop has a great atmosphere and the staff is extremely kind, welcoming and hard working.
Nice little neighborhood spot. Cute hipster staff. Great music not playing super loud. Only baked goods and instant oatmeal for food.
I love this place! Alexis and her coworker were the best! It was great! Thanks!
Very friendly, quality Portland coffee. Lovely place, and good brew.
I love all the different hot chocolate options that they have. The 8 Oz is what you expect, quick and your throw it back so now Ill opt for the bigger cup. The people that work here and very friendly. Theres plenty of pastries and treats to enjoy. The atmosphere is very cozy especially with people typing away on their laptops. I love that its close walking distance to my apt and next to plenty of great food carts. Its been my favorite coffee shop in sellwood for sure!
My favorite shop in all of Oregon
I mail order from Blue Kangaroo and the coffee is very good (thats why I order through the mail...I live in the South). I wish I could say the same for the mail order service. It used to be great, not so reliable now. My last order wasnt sent until I called and the most recent order same thing. My email and phone inquiries were not returned. No matter how great the coffee, nothing is worth poor customer service. Two stars for mail order service. I would give four stars for the coffee, though.
Great neighborhood coffee shop- comfortable inside seating with tables, chairs and couches, and reading material. Plenty of outdoor seating too to enjoy your beverage, greet your neighbors and people watch.
A nice comfy den. We sat outside, saying hi with passers by. The iced Chain Tea was the Best Ever!
Neighborhood coffee shop on street filled with antique shops. Mixed crowd, kids and old folks like me. Hipsters and hippies on laptops. Cappuccino excellent, smooth not burnt. Blueberry scone fresh.
Great little coffee shop with fantastic coffee. First time visiting and will definitely go back. Gluten free pastries too from New Cascadia.
Not a fan. My latte tasted bland and at $4 no less. Not much coffee flavor detected, plus it was served in a glass that was much too hot to hold, glad I didnt drop it on my way back to my table. My friend got drip coffee which has free refills, so thats nice, but she wasnt a fan of the flavor either and had to add creamer to make it palatable. The layout is so crowded. Once you squeeze your way to a table there is no way youre going to get back up until its time to bump people on the way to leave.
Great local coffee shop and good atmosphere. Always friendly staff.
First the coffee was tasteless had a latte and all I tasted was the milk. For a small PORTLAND coffee roaster I am surprised they still are in business really. Second the day old treats were less then desirable.Never again ! PORTLAND is still the epi center for grea great coffee. Blues kangaroo is not one of them.
This is one of my all time favorite places to go for coffee because they have Cubanos! They add cinnamon and sugar to their own roasted espresso grounds when they pull the shot. Also, it is set in a great neighborhood for walking, shopping, and eating!
Delicious toasts and super beautiful lattes! Dragged my boyfriend here on a Saturday morning and he was initially reluctant because he didnt get the appeal of going to a place that only serves toast.
Very busy place. It was really hopping when I was there
I just had a hazelnut iced coffee, but it was lovely.
I have always loved your drinks that your coffee shop makes!
The coffee here is delicious and the staff are so attentive and nice. It feels like you are in someones living room but theres plenty of space. And they give away their coffee grinds so you can pump up your garden.
Blue Kangaroo is my go-to coffee shop whenever Im in Sellwood. The roasted-in-house coffee is always fantastic and very complex, even when compared to other highly regarded local roasters. They range from aromatic, to bold, to unique (like their Mexican roast, I think thats the name, anyway, its got a really nice spice to it).Prices are more than fair and service is always great. Highly recommended!
With sweet little kid area, free *reliable* Wifi, self-serve coffee station, nice dog-able outside seating & cool proprietors -- this is one of our favourite places to wake up on a sleepy weekend day ... AND the wonderful art inspires us to create cool crafts at home! What more could we want? =D
Tasty coffee and cool staff! I really like the energy of the space and how this place really feels like a part of the community!!
Very friendly. Drinks and snacks are always quite good. So good, in fact, the place could be twice the size and still be packed. Its difficult to find a place to sit a lot of the time, but thats because of the popularity. Its always my choice in Sellwood over the other coffeehouses nearby.
Cozy relaxed atmosphere. Good neighborhood meeting place
Met some coworkers here. The coffee was fine... and the seating was crowded. Not a terrible spot, just nothing to make me give it 4 or 5 stars
I cant confirm that this place was dirty. actually the staff was very nice and with a personal smile. the espresso was really good. its a small neighborhood place, good for a break and relax
This place may be cute but the management clearly has little humanity. I saw the boss actually slap the hand of an employee after he did something wrong. I certainly wont be going back.
Freshly roasted beans onsite made the world of difference for a great cup of coffee. Consistently great service with big smiles. Very family friendly and comfortable place.
Great service. Nice atmosphere and awesome coffee. A must stop shop for sure
The short haired blonde lady ( Cindy, I think ) that owns this place is about the nastiest human being on the planet. I use to deliver to this place and she was always rude to me and I went above and beyond to show up on time. Everyone else is very nice including the other owner.
My day starts on a positive note with Blue Kangaroos cubano espresso shot. BK adds cinnamon and sugar to the espresso pour for the perfect flavor. Sellwood/Moreland neighborhood is lucky to have this coffee shop. Its a cozy gathering place where the staff are friendly, where you feel welcome, and get to enjoy a delicious drink.
They have some incredible roasts here! Get their espresso cubano. Perfection!
I love this local spot in Sellwood. Their house recipe mochas are very chocolatey without being too sweet and are delightful spicy.
Good coffee and bagels. Got there areopress because they were out of filters for the poor over. Dont think it was worth the price premium, the drip coffee we got as well was plenty good.
Love these local, hometown coffeeshops! This is a favorite of mine. Great meeting place for both friends and business meetings.
Very colorful coffee shop with good espresso and a ton of seating. A bit cramped, but only because of the ample seating - Ill take that end of the bargain
Nice place to catch up with friends. Good election of books and games to keep kids occupied!
Cubans Latte is worth a special trip out of your way. This place is sorta like Cheers, where everyone knows your name. I love Blue Kangaroo for their fresh coffee and the awesome support of the community!
Blue Kangaroo makes my favorite coffee bean blend (Farmhouse Blend). The staff are friendly and the space is inviting. I only wish they were closer to my house!
Nice enough but Grand Central Bakery is much better and only a few blocks away.
Amazing coffee shop serving up Excellency and friendliness in both coffee and service quality. Well appointed with squashy chairs and more. Go to there.
I showed up this morning and asked them if they have stuff like sandwiches or paninis, and one of the ladies told me no, and the other one next to her said with an attitude THIS IS NOT A GOOD TIME i assume its because there was a big line and they were busy. Not a good costumer service, never going to go there again! People with this attitude should not be working in places like this.
At the Blue Kangaroo they roast their own beans, very cool.Their Cubano late is The best Ive had. Turned some friends onto it as well. They are now Hooked as I am.
