Lovely place to stop and chill during a walk in Ladds Addition! Swung by here this past week with a friend for a latte and iced tea.Service was super fast, considering there was only one employee working. I had a latte which was delicious (and made pretty quickly) while my pal had the Ruby Nectar iced tea. The iced tea didnt need any sweetener and was super refreshing! If I didnt need my caffeine fix for the day I would have tried to swap.Great place to visit for decent coffee and a phenomenal place to walk!
Its okay. A little slow, about $0.50 more expensive than it should be. They charge you a 3% credit card fee, which wouldnt be as outrageous if they werent already too expensive (For some items, like regular coffee). The Italian soda is absolutely worth the price, and everything is very good quality and fresh. The staff all have enlarged pinky fingers because its hard to be fancy with normal sized ones, they are also pretty nice.
Super cool library-study-dark wood aesthetic in the main part of the cafe and plenty of seating in the additional room with an art-gallery vibe. Yummy cake, panini, and latte! Quick and friendly service and good wifi. New fave homework spot in Portland.
One of my favorite coffee houses in the area. Very friendly staff with delicious coffee and food located off the beaten track. I have often times gotten my caffeine jolt here and cannot recommend it enough to others.
Communism at its finest. Vaccination card required for service.
Good but still working on being fully open, fully staffed, and fully operational,. Hit or miss right now on food and hours - waited for them to open (late) and then almost no baked goods available to go with coffees. Glad that it is such a pleasant place which made up for the rest!
Fun little coffee spot in the middle of a quaint community. Limited hours and selections but pleasant service professionals.
As others have noted, the location and late hours are what makes this place special (hence the two stars). otherwise, the owner is very rude and sassy, the vibe is pretentious (time limit on wifi that you have to purchase a password to?), the pastries are decent (they don’t ever taste fresh...but i’ve only had the vegan ones), and the prices are very high. the food is good but not really worth it. i go here often to study but i wouldn’t say it’s a favorite by any means.
This is the most INSANE place which discriminates regular people and endanger them. When the mask mandate was off, these crazy people kept it on, and now they REQUIRE A PROOF OF VACCINATION for just going inside and ordering a cup of coffee !! Ridiculous. Also, to add more, we know the person who got a food poisoning at this place a month ago. Boycott this place, they are very very bad.
Great coffee, a bit pricy and limited seatng but great to seeing by for pickup.
In my opinion, the best oatmilk lattes in town.
Little bit pricey, not a lot of choices for dessert, but cute neighborhood cafe.
Ive found the perfect coffee shop after spending eight years in the Portland area! Palio has a terrific selection of coffee and tea (rather than lacking in one or the other, which is usually the case) and there is a wide variety of seating. Great window seats for daydreaming, little nooks for studying, and some comfortable areas to sit and chat with friends. The music is low key, which is crucial and helps keep a calm and welcoming vibe. The late hours are good if you need to study, meet up with someone, or just need to get out for a while without doing anything extravagant. The service was top notch. I havent tried any of the food yet, but I look forward to it next time.Even though I only have 6 months left in Portland, Im definitely returning to Palio!
Rude employees, 8$ lattes. No thank you.
What a special place. Food, service and location are wonderful!
Great coffee, however the grilled sandwiches leave something to be desired for. The ruben is also pretty loaded with horseradish, so thats something to watch out for.
I give it three because I like the big room off to the side and the cool location. However, I think the stuff here is overpriced and you have to buy a certain $ amount for Wi-Fi AND are limited to one device and given a time limit. Dont think thats necessary. I kinda understand, but this is Portland, where you spend hours working and hanging out in a coffee shop.
There are a lot of coffee shops in Portland! The location is what makes this place special. Besides that everything else is meh. I was hopeful for some of their cakes but have better ones at market of choice. Drinks are okay. The WiFi system is a bit weird, maybe they have had issues but I don’t know of another shop that limits your time based on pricing. Service...again meh.
Good coffee shop with a pleasant late night atmosphere. The locally sourced desserts and coffee/espresso options are desirable. A nice place for catching up with friends or studying. I love their separate spaces that help the public to see and take use of the areas primarily used for quiet and the main space for louder chatting.
Yummy desserts (I had the cherry gallette) and big, generous coffee mugs for drinks. This is a 3-star review because I dont like or understand the Portland practice of asking you to bus your own table. It really sort of jars you out of a good experience. Coffee shops are part of the hospitality industry. Be fully hospitable. We should have asked for a refund on our tip.
Used to be my favorite coffee spot but the service here has gone out the window. I dont think the girl helping us smiled once. Its a shame I love the coffee and the atmosphere. Hire some new friendlier staff, you are turning your customers off.
Great place, one of the few coffee shops in portland with late hours
I too thought I had found a gemstone with this cafe. However, I was very wrong. I will admit that I love the way this place to is set up. However, the person at the counter couldn’t be bothered that I asked questions about different drinks and when asked about the desserts and if they accommodated for allergies-the barista seemed uninterested. Unfortunately, that set a bad tone for the rest of my night there. I did enjoy my tea but did find it to be too watered down and a bit expensive for the service received. I might consider coming back to see if I have a more positive experience in the future. I would recommend going somewhere where the people serving you are more interested in that then leaving for the night. To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement. I really sought out this place and drove out of my way to come here. But maybe it was just an off night for them.
This place is a coffee shop that opens at 11am ?? It’s also outrageously expensive and every employee I’ve ever met there is pretentious and rude.
I have spent a few afternoon study sessions here. It can be very quiet and cozy, but other times quite loud. coffee is decent and the grilled cheese and tomato soup i had were very good. Only downside is that wifi is dependent on buying with codes for 3 hours at a time.
Great study vibe and selection of beverages! I feel like Im in a library when sitting in the back room- cozy with big wood tables and low lamplight. Also, love the area that its in. Will be going often even though you are forced to buy something $3.50+ for 3hrs of wifi. Not a fan of getting my arm twisted but I like the place enough that it doesnt bother me THAT much. I get it, though. Small businesses have to stay in business somehow.
As a working graduate student, I am always searching for quiet places to study. The first time visiting Palio, I thought I had found a valuable cafe. The second visit last Friday was not the case.I entered the cafe and went straight back to the seating area to meet my friends and settle down (heavy legal books, backpack, etc.) However I felt that I was being stared down by the owner. Finally, I felt pressured to purchase an item and I went up to the counter to find that I was being followed back and forth. I had such a bad feeling from him that I lost my appetite to order anything. I settled on a small coffee ($3.25!) and sat down to attempt to study. At promptly 10:30pm, an employee started vacuuming, thus I lost hope of staying longer. I also overheard the owner who did not let a customer stay when he brought in his own coffee. He literally wrapped up his dessert and told him to take it to go. I will not be returning.
Great place for meetings and doing work of studying. Large tables. Lots of loose leaf teas to choose from. Note: they prefer cash but certainly take cards.
Just had a hot chocolate extra chocolate pump. Killing time before work. Open til 11:00 pm so always good for a little internet and hot drink. Service was very nice.
Fun little spot, very casual vibe with delicious dessert. The food and coffee menu looked great, but we only had a slice of German chocolate cake that was rich and dense!
Besides my one complaint this place is great. Great food, great drinks and a very nice atmosphere. My one complaint is about a lady who works there. I spend money here almost 2 or 3 times a week and the times I am with someone and don’t want to buy anything that day she will say I have to buy something or leave. Very rude treatment from her.
This is that cozy, library-feeling coffee shop youve been looking for. Not just delicious desserts and coffee, but fun teas and really solid lunch options.
This place is way overpriced theres nothing special about the food or the coffee. Its not unique from any other coffee shop. back in the 90s it was a very cool place to go. It was a lot like the coffee shop on friends but no longer.my daughter is a very avid coffee drinker and goes from shop to shop and she said this is the most expensive coffee shop she has run into
Bro, I can’t tell you how many better coffee shops there are in Portland than this place. It’s overpriced, they only let you use the WiFi for 3 hours per purchase, and the employees give you outstandingly sour looks if you spend a moment getting settled before buying anything, or you dare to ask for more hot water for your tea. Based on a bunch of other reviews, it looks like it wasn’t out of the ordinary demeanor. And the chairs are super uncomfortable. Why go to a place to study or work when they do everything to shove you out the door as fast as possible?
I love the location and they have a nice study space but drinks are a bit pricey and you have to purchase something to access WiFi (for one device). I had a good customer service experience. They bus tables for you!
A regular favorite of ours to go study and read. Cozy and quiet atmosphere, great drinks, good food selection compared to many coffee shops. Also a ton of great cakes and cookies if youre feeling indulgent. Service is always personable and professional, another rarity at Portland coffee shops. Weve never had a bad time here.
Had a similar experience as other people have expressed where I was with 6 other people and only 3 of us ordered something. We were rudely asked to leave unless everyone bought something. The man did not ask other customers around us to do the same even though some of them had empty glasses like we did. I might understand his response if there were other people waiting for a table but we were there late in the afternoon and there was plenty of room for other customers. I also wonder if he did that because the 6 people are high school students. I guess from other people’s reviews it’s just that way at Palio’s but I will not be coming back again.
Service a bit slow. Staff seemed more interested in chit chat than greeting me as a paying customer. Otherwise, nice small place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Portland.
This place is great place to study, and it seems like it caters to students. The tea, coffee, and desserts are great, but a little pricey. When I am there I am always wanting a simple healthy meal or snack, but the food options keep you wanting. I am a student and I appreciate their flexible hours of operation. Over all this is a great neighborhood cafe.
Palio is a great place to go and study, or meet up with someone! Its a bit more expensive than other coffee shops, but the atmosphere definitely makes up for it. Pastries are delicious too!
One of the only coffee places in Portland that doesnt play super loud music. They mostly play classical and instrumental tunes, which I super appreciate because it creates a calming, productive environment-- an excellent place to read and work that feels like an old library in the best way. I generally just get coffee/tea and its always tasty. Service is kind and friendly, if sometimes slightly distant.
Went for lunch on a beautiful fall day. The service was abrupt and unfriendly. We had a spinach salad with some skewered chicken and a wisp of sesame dressing. Virtually flavorless. The panini was cold and tasted liked it had been nuked in a cellophane bag. Had wanted to split a dessert, but didn’t want to spend another dollar in the place. It’s a comfortable, inviting space. Too bad everything else is mediocre.
The food is tasty and the atmosphere is great for studying or just hanging out, but everything is overpriced. I would have given it more stars if I had reviewed it after the first couple of times I went there because the staff is usually friendly and helpful. However, the last time I went I met up with a group of friends to study, one of my friends arrived later than the rest of us (we had all already ordered food by the time he got there) and right after he got there, while he was still getting his things out of his backpack, one of the staff members walked up to him and said, you need to order something if you are going to stay here. in a really rude tone of voice. He walked away after saying that and we were all sitting there in disbelief that he would be so rude. He didnt ask if there was anything he could get for my friend and he didnt even make an attempt to be kind or welcoming. If Im going to be kind enough to give them my business and pay their ridiculous prices for food, I expect them to be kind to me and anyone at my table. I wont be going back, since there are plenty of other study spots in Portland with reasonable prices and friendly staff, but I wont say you shouldnt try it out at least once. You might like it and you might have better luck with their staff than I did.
Favorite coffee shop in Portland! The coffee and food is SO GOOD! Great sweet and savory options. Theres a pesto pasta salad with DELICIOUS garlic bread and other tasty pesto cheese sandwiches. The cookies and scones are also delish. The space is great for studying and the staff is super accommodating.
Good coffee and tea including in-house mixes. Inclusive, cozy atmosphere. Good spaces for quiet study or chatting with a friend. WiFi works well also using tokens when you purchase an item.
I really like Jen what great person!!! The new chi was not as good as your old one, not much flavor....love the place but I really always came for the chi....not sure if Ill return.
Great place to bring a laptop and work for a couple of hours. Very quiet (almost too quiet) so you have to go when the mood and time is right. I think its set up to go alone more so than with a friend. The counter space is crowded and Im never quite sure what they offer. Its almost like a hotel that Id like a tour of all the nooks and amenities because there seems to be so much yet so little going on at the same time. Bottom line, great place to do homework at 8pm and have tea.
Such a cozy spot in the middle of Ladds addition. Big windows, beautiful woodwork, and unique architecture. Great place for a one on one meeting or to grab a drink and a snack and set yourself up for a few hours of work (great coffee shop office). I wish I lived closer, Id spend a *lot* more time at Palios.
Palio is a delightful venue to get to know a new friend, or enjoy building up a relationship. The coffee and food are good, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. A PLUS is that the area surrounding Paleo is a lovely neighborhood, eminently walkable for those additional steps youre trying to fit into your day.
I come here monthly with my best friend who has been a patron of palios since she was a kid. Its great. Chill vibes
Such a quaint place and great setting. Having driven past a number of times I was attracted so much to the setting that I drove out of my way to come visit. While the setting is nice it is the single most overpriced coffee Ive had $4.25 for a 12 oz latte then add $1.00 for flavor for a total of $5.25. Sadly the service was quite curt as well which brings this rating to a 2. I wont be returning.
Quaint location a couple blocks from downtown. Very helpfully accommodating staff, and servers who seemed to really want to connect (or leave you to your own) and give the best experience. The food was excellent, very generous portions. The best chili in the Portland area, if thats their soup of the day, dont pass on it!
Way overpriced.... The owner rarely helps out and seems somewhat angry. The desserts are good but good luck getting one. It takes the one person about 15 min to make a cup of coffee thus you wait, and wait for someone to acknowledge you. Very unfriendly vibe. It used to be a better run business 15-20 years ago. The staff in general has a Hawthorne attitude: unfriendly and a sense of entitlement. I recommend going to Grand Central especially the Sellwood location - they have customer service down to a science. First step, SMILE and ACKNOWLEDGE your paying customers!!
I only go here on Sunday mornings, I meet friends and discuss a multitude of topics. This place is great for doing that. The coffee is good, their cherry galette is delicious and their carrot cake is one of the best in the city.
Trendy coffee spot, they have a seating area upstairs with heat lamps. Cool vibe! I got the hot chocolate with marshmallows, it was delicious!
Good coffee, amazing pastries. Light years better than the cookie cutter corporate shops. Great neighborhood coffee shop. Shop local and keep your $ in your hood.☕☕☕🍰🍰
The desserts and the coffee are excellent but the owner is super rude. Dont dare to pay with a credit card or he will give you his classic evil stare. If you dont mind the evil stare then this place is really good.
The service here is a bad joke. We bought $18.50 in drinks and handed over our last $20 (we had our credit card but this business wanna-be doesnt offer credit card facilities in 2017). Were happy to tip when service is good and if we had another $5 we would have gladly handed it over prior to experiencing the service here.Everyone else in the cafe was served their order but not us. We werent even told our drinks were ready and were left on the counter getting cold. We were in the next room so we were relying on the staff letting us know. They need to get over their entitlement mentality. Theyll be tipped when they provide service. After what we experienced today, they should be refunding us.After reading of other reviewers experiencing terse, surly and rude service, one star is extremely generous for this mob. They should be concerned at the significant minority of unhappy customers posting here.
The place is OK... Nice really...However the baristas are rude and straight out Portlandia. They have that, I really have better things to do than get your coffee, deal with your credit card, shower, wash my hair. But I notice you only left a dollar in the tip jar.I try not to look down on people... ever... I dont like to be looked down on either. Its a strange contrast to the place itself the atmosphere is appealing and welcoming... up until the moment you talk to the barista.Very poor customer service overall.
I was excited to try this place out after having walked past it many times. My significant other and I ordered our food and coffee at the same time, expecting to get the coffee right away. After many other customers came in and ordered drinks (having received theirs before we received ours) our coffees were brought to us 20 minutes after ordering themt Our food came out immediately after. The sandwich my significant other ordered had so much horseradish on it that they nearly gagged several times. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place to anyone looking for a good spot to eat.
I love this little shop. Good coffee, nice selection of tea, and out-of-this-world desserts. They even have a small selection of books and games. Its a great place to relax and read a book or catch up with an old friend.
WILL NOT BE GOING BACK! The man working was really rude. i came in with a couple of friends hoping to get some studying done. Two of them ordered while I went and found a table with my other friend. I was planning on buying a drink after I was settled, and I figured this would be okay because my friends had already purchased OVERPRICED drinks. Anyways he came up to me and was extremely rude about saying that I needed to go purchase something or else I needed to leave. He continued to stare at me until I stood up to go order or leave. So unprofessional how he handled the situation. Learn some business skills.
Great quiet place to work. Polite, gentle staff. I just wish they had more vegan options besides desserts.
Love this place. Unique little library area, a huge selection of teas also very fresh and are packed in tea bags right before your eyes! Also in a lovely neighborhood with a rose garden nearby
Staff were amazingly accommodating when I made my odd drink request. The ice cream cookie is a monster of a dessert, easily enough for 4 people to share. Its a cozy place to relax with some great seating for even big groups.
This is a comfortable place to sit with a latte for a while and read. Ive always found the staff to be courteous and efficient, if a bit more distant than friendly. The desserts have been consistently tasty.
Great neighborhood coffee shop! The coffees were well-prepared. We shared a Curried Samosa with a delicate crust pastry that was excellent, and there are plenty of little nooks to talk or work.
We like the place .. not so much the coffee taste. Needs to improve!
Great desserts, coffee and atmosphere.. One could easily spend hours here just relaxing and reading books from their library.
Beautiful place and great setting but YIKES the owner is RUDE and the drinks are EXPENSIVE. just paid $4.25 for a pint glass of sparkling iced tea...would love to support the business but Im afraid I wont be back.
Cute spot in Ladds Addition by the center circle. Surprisingly large and well stocked with tasty pastries and drinks.
What a great place to sit and chat over a cup of coffee or tea. Cozy and inviting with plenty of seating.
I really like the location of this cafe. The pastries are decent, the coffee is excellent, the staff is usually cordial (sometimes I dont get a thank you and for someone who used to work at Starbucks that is the absolute least I expect from a cafe like this), the crowd is a mix between upper middle class homeowners and students so there are usually a lot of laptops. The layout is strange and inefficient. Its worth a visit, though.
Great place to study, its usually pretty quiet. Theres a separate room with big tables and plenty of outlets if you are meeting a couple of people or studying/working in a group. You need to make a purchase for every 3 hours of internet access, which I like, because this is one of the few places that actually offers solid internet. They have a nice tea list and do offer some savory food options as well as a variety of desserts; not much gluten free though so I usually dont partake. The ambience here is very nice and being open until 11 means they are one of the few coffee shops in town where you can work late.
Stunning menu and stunning service !! I freaking love this place
My wife and I stumbled in drunk late one night and received a warm welcome, great service and fantastic rhubarb pie. There is a good selection of vegan choices and a lot of books to check out. Nice quiet, calm atmosphere. We will be back
Comfortable coffee shop in an historic neighborhood. Dont expect anything special for some of the more expensive espresso drinks in the area. No latte art. Bland taste. Elevator music. At least the baristas arent too pretentious. Get WiFi code with receipt of purchases over $3.50.
Recommend stopping in for a sweet pastry treat. Really enjoyed their strawberry tart.
Very sweet and friendly staff. Awesome location! Also, very cozy with good food😌
Cute and comfortable. Set within a residential neighborhood, which gives it a more local appeal. An excellent selection of desserts. The staff is very friendly.
The manager that was there when I was going there, a woman named Alex, was the rudest and most absurdly unprofessional person I’ve ever met in food service. She had a problem with me (not worth mentioning in and of itself other than to say that it was very clearly a projection of her own prejudices and insecurities more than anything to do with me or anything I was doing) that she chose to address by, out of the blue, throwing a hysterical temper tantrum at me in the middle of the café. Mind you: after having been a loyal customer to this establishment almost every day for six months, without ever having had a single conversation with this person, this is how she chose to initially make me aware of the fact that there was a problem. From what I have read this kind of behavior is apparently part of the employee handbook at Palio. other than this particular instance I never saw this behavior myself but I had heard about it many times from many people that I befriended there. I never went there again and I can’t recommend this place to anyone.
Wonderful place only a bit of a shortage of plugs in the library area. Might have more plugs in the back. A little speedy but quality good that has a wholesome feel to itStraight up $2.75 purchase for 3 hours of WiFi rules done automatically at register with purchase.
The desserts are so delicious and the vibe is so nice. Know that the drinks are HUGE so unless youre super super thirsty or gonna be there for a couple hours order a small.
Literally, best latte I have ever had was made by a barista here. She specially makes the coffee each time I come in.The atmosphere here is great for studying, hanging out with friends, or just talking. Please be nice to this place! Its my favorite coffee shop!
Palio is one of my favorite places to go for late night coffee/study session. Their food and pastries are better than most and the coffee is fantastic about 90% of the time. The employees are cordial without being superficial. Overall Palio is a classic, Portland cafe.
I love this place, I live out in the burbs now but went here a lot when I lived in SE. Its a pretty popular space so its not always easy finding a table. A bit on the pricier side for some things, but I really like the atmosphere.
Significantly over-priced compared to nearby cafes. Customer service is slow at best and hostile at worst. Witnessing the owner abuse other customers was very uncomfortable. There are literally dozens of other great local options within walking distance so we will not be returning.
Another dope and chill spot to be around good peeps
The owner is extremely rude, which is too bad because it is an otherwise chill spot. Mirroring others experiences he yelled at a customer who had sat down prior to ordering. Its honestly odd, the location is ideal and they should have no issues with paying customers. I wont be going back unless it changes owners, or Im in the mood for a little entertainment. Ive been twice and watched it happen twice, so if watching terrible customer service is your thing it might be worth a visit.
Its a very laid back environment, silent is more of a better description. Great place if you want to get some work done but definitely not if youre having a coffee date ;)
This place is AMAZING! I have lived nearby since I moved here 6 years ago and it is so close by its dangerous! I particularly love going for the cake (Fantasy Cake FTW!) but Ive occasionally had lunch here and taken it out to Ladds Circle during the summer. The owner is great, and Im so glad this place is still around!
Cute little coffee shop and bakery! Fantastic Au Lait!
So scrumptiously comforting food. Libations to be had. Good service and fun atmosphere .. 👍
The coffee is good. In most other cities, this would be one of the best, but in Portland, its just good. The drip was flavorful, but didnt have that oh my god I need 10 refills quality.Wifi is included for 3 hours with a $2.75 purchase. There are plenty of power outlets, and the internet speed is respectable. I got 15.36 down, 12.11 up. Good enough for any work you need to get done.
I usually order a short breve with a small amount of vanilla and they nailed it. 5 stars
