I can’t say enough good things about Richard’s Building Supply in Poughkeepsie. They are my first call for all my product needs. The entire staff is always more than accommodating to answer all my questions (and I always have a ton of them) and walk me through placing my orders accurately. I walk in or call and every sales person (including the managers) know me by name. I have been to other suppliers that do not offer the same customer service experience which is why I will give as much business as I can to them. I am fairly new to this industry and they have helped me tremendously when it comes to learning about all the products and give me excellent advice as to what materials will work best for each job. As far as I am concerned Richard’s is the best supply house around!

They only sell to “contractors”. What does that mean? We stopped in to buy some metal roofing material but the guy wouldn’t help us. You have to have a license? Our contractor doesn’t have one… so could he not shop here? Ridiculous. The web should state “not open to the public”.UPDATE: A regional manager spoke with me the very next day. He apologized, helped me and followed up on my needs. Thank you, Ken. This review was originally 1 star.

The guys at Richards in Poughkeepsie are extremely knowledgeable and the customer service is great. It is always a pleasure to deal with them.

I have been purchasing from Richards building supply for 15 years. Their staff will go above and beyond to get you what you need and help you. Even with Covid-19 making things difficult recently, they’ve been there to help the customers through it.

I went in today to purchase a few pieces of vinyl siding for installing a new window. The man at counter was very nasty and belligerent. I asked him if they sell Hardie board his response was “not in stock.” Then he asked me my business name and I told him I was a homeowner and before I could explain that my contractor sent me to get this he slammed the book and said “we only sell to contractors.” Very hostile man!

I attempted to return some left over materials from a completed job and they will not accept any returns over 30 days old, EVEN THOUGH THEY STILL SELL AND STOCK THE SAME PRODUCT LINE. They should reexamine their return policy, it is not customer friendly in an era where local businesses bend over backwards to maintain business relationships, Richards Building Supply goes out of its way to do just the opposite.
