We were in Raleigh for the Hopscotch Festival yesterday and literally happened upon this restaurant. First off, its SO CHARMING. The aesthetic inside and out is so classic. Turns out it was sold last year by the family who ran it for 88 YEARS. Thankfully, the new owner didnt gut it. Its gorgeous and the architecture and fixtures alone are amazing to see. The wait staff was very pleasant and attentive. I had the veggie plate, and it was delicious!!! I especially like the mac and cheese and the fried okra. My friend had the cheese burger, and it looked great, even though I dont eat meat. We had sweet tea; I had mine half and half. It was great. Definitely super happy we found this gem right near the city plaza and were able to experience and support a locally owned establishment rather than a chain restaurant. Will definitely eat here again next time Im in Raleigh.

This place is great. I had to pay a traffic ticket yesterday and when I left the court house I thought Id walk around and find something to eat. Not sure where to go I asked a random guy and he said I should check out Meccas and pointed directly behind me. From the outside it almost looks like an old hole in the wall movie theater. Inside rather were some on the best pancakes and bacon I had even been served at a restaurant. Usually the pancakes go a bit cold because the bacon takes a second longer to cook but not the case here. Everything was hot and delicious. Im pretty sure they let me order from the Sunday menu because I wanted brunch which was awesome if them but dont just expect it because they did it for me maybe they had some bacon that would have gone bad before Sunday and didnt mind who knows. BUT great atmosphere and service! Definitely would recommend 5 out of five stars my friend.

Our first time visiting Mecca. Definitely a hidden gem in downtown Raleigh. The atmosphere is like a old time styled diner. The have 2 levels so me as a parent love the fact that upstairs is a little bit private so my toddler doesnt disturb the peace. I had Beef Tips on rice & gravy, w/ a side of fruit. My husband had the Chopped Pork w/ fries. We both enjoyed our dishes very much our server Kincannon was superb. We will return & try other dishes. Pricing was excellent

Stunning Mesozoic era dining hall with frightening Art Deco gargoyles extracted from the ruins of Martha Stewart’s lost sex dungeon. The upstairs bathroom features a small sink which is next to a paper towel dispenser which is next to a hand soap dispenser which is next to a fire extinguisher filled with sweet sweet dolphin blood. The collard greens are super dank and they are packed with the nutrients you need for a successful armed robbery or dance contest.

North Carolina comfort food is delicious! Ive heard about the Mecca my entire life (over 5 decades) as a place where politicians informally met to hammer out compromises. This past week brought my first visit and I was not disappointed. Everyone in my group choose Eastern NC pork barbecue, which is vinegar based. Though it was a bit sweeter than the typical recipe, it was good. The collard greens were unquestionably the best Ive ever had, despite the fact that I grew up in a home that served them often. The waitress and restaurant manager were friendly, and even shared (in detail) be how to cook the collard to get someone results. I gave four stars because the restaurant itself is a step into the past. It hasnt been updated in decades and could use a fresh coat of paint.

After getting no service at another place downtown we were surprised to get such great service at a place we happened upon. Established in 1930, the decor will give you old school Raleigh vibes. Theres even an autographed photo of Cherie Berry who has kept our elevators safe for years. Anyways, the seating, ordering and eating process took 24 minutes at 2 p.m. on a Sunday. The biscuits and gravy were flavorful, the pancakes were thick, the turkey bacon properly crisped, and the egg and cheese croissant was warm through the last bite. Id highly recommend them for a laid back brunch in the heart of downtown.

Calling a restaurant “The Mecca” sounds like the height of hipster pretention, but this place is very much the opposite. Founded by Greek immigrants in 1930, The Mecca is as old-school as old-school gets with classic décor, a comfortably familiar menu, and competent execution all-around.While there are definitely more chic and comfortable places to dine, The Mecca oozes nostalgia. Red stools along a long counter, a black and white checkered floor, and heavy wooden booths give the look of a place untouched by time. The menu is equally immune to faddishness, offering Southern favorites (fried chicken, fried fish, and chopped BBQ), a few nods to the founders’ heritage (a Greek salad and Zorba’s beef tips), and the eyebrow-raising Garry Dorn burger (a veal cutlet sandwich).Hungry from wandering around GalaxyCon, my wife and I bypassed sandwiches in favor of platters: fried fish and BBQ, respectively. Both came with a hushpuppy, slaw, and two sides (mac n cheese for both of us, butter beans for her, and fried okra for me). While neither dish was attractively plated, both tasted considerably better than they looked. After decades, The Mecca has making this kind of food down to a science. Both the fish and the okra were fried to a golden brown sans greasiness, the slaw was creamy, and the BBQ was not dried out. Admittedly, vinegar-based is not my preferred style, but The Mecca’s was as good as a rendition of that type as I’ve had anywhere. For three quarters of the meal, service was courteous, prompt, and attentive. However, we made the mistake of ordering a blackberry cobbler after The Mecca got busier, and the dessert took so long to reach us that they ended up comping it. At under $3, it still would have been worthwhile, and much of The Mecca’s menu is similarly value-conscious. Both lunch dishes were under $10 apiece, and while the fried fish contained a disappointingly small amount of fish, there was still enough on the plate for a filling meal. The Mecca is the kind of time-displaced icon that everyone should try at least once, but for those who are willing to trade innovation for simplicity, it’s more than just a novelty act.

Im glad this place is still going strong after all these years. I love the diner classics menu but I wish they still served breakfast all day. Now they just serve breakfast for Sunday brunch. Under new owners, they now have evening hours, & serve alcohol. Prices have gone up. $25 is too much for a diner lunch for 2!

Just had time for a quick breakfast this morning, so I went to the Mecca. The waitress took care of my order in a timely manner ... my food came without delay and she let me pay so that I could leave as soon as I ate. My breakfast was great - even a turkey bacon option! Now - to those who say the Mecca is “tired” ... that is what I call character!! Please, Raleigh - stop tearing down everything old and cherish local institutions! Many a political gathering of politicians or Supreme Court Justices have been held here - is it cutting edge cuisine? No, but it is great food at a reasonable cost. I would have rather had the cup of coffee I had at the Mecca than anything I have ever had at Starbucks! Support our local institutions ... it is what separates Raleigh from Any City, USA!

In addition, the server was rude and inattentive. We had to flag her down to get our tiny Tea glasses refilled. I tried to order a water and was told that they had run out of glasses, even though the table beside of us were given drinks not 3 minutes later. Having just eaten there, I find all the positive reviews surprising and very hard to believe. Im not sure if all the reviews are from relatives of the owners or staff. I arrived with a group of 14 people to eat here based on the reviews. First, there are no seating arrangements for any group over 4, which is how many can fit in one of their booths. Minor inconvenience but not insurmountable. Looking back, I should have gotten the hint when I tried to order the beer special, and the waitress informed me they ran out of the beer special. We ordered our food and waited to be served. About 20 minutes later, the waitress informs me they are all out of corn on the cob so I order the peas. She comes back to tell me they are all out of peas. I ask for another side, but theyre out of that as well. Finally I ask what do they have, and she said they had pickled beets--no thanks. I asked for a dessert instead, and she told me they ran out of dessert at lunch. The same scenario played out with several other people in our group. Apparently the restaurant is unfamiliar with the concept of turning on the oven or stove to cook more food. Now I can see this happening if it was 10 pm on a Tue or Wed night, but this was at 7:30 pm on a Friday night. How in the heck do you run out of just about everything early on a Friday night? Another group of 12 people came into the restaurant about a half an hour after us, and the staff must have finally come clean that they didnt have much food because the group soon left. And the best treat of all was the waitress charged all of us full price even though we didnt get our full meal. The waitresses all had bad attitudes throughout the ordeal even though no one in our party expressed any anger or frustration with the waitresses. I do know Mecca lost 26 customers for any future business. Hope they come up with a new business model. To be fair, what food we did receive was decent--not great but not bad. With so many other dining options in downtown Raleigh, I wouldnt recommend wasting your time or money at Mecca.

My date got the open faced turkey sandwich and it was literally just a small hunk of turkey on a slice of squishy white bread. The chopped pork had good flavor but the meat was dry. The vinegar based bbq sauce was very good and the mac and cheese was delicious. Well probably try it again maybe if we are downtown and Hungary.
