Presentation: 5/5Service: 5/5Flavor: 3/5Freshness: 5/5Price: 3/5Variety: 5/5So much to choose from. Let me start by saying i come here every time I visit San Diego. But this is the first time Ive been to this location. I usually go to the one near the Gaslamp Quarter.Always a delight to come here, but the items I got this time around seemed sweet, but with no substance. Its just tasted of sugar, but no flavor to back it, at least nothing impressionable. Which is a shame considering these are not cheap desserts. They are pricey, and well prepared, and am willing to spend the money if its good. But I felt this time around it missed the mark. But the service was top notch as always. Quite attentive and ready to explain a pastry you know nothing about.
While the quality of the desserts are still outstanding, in spite of the outdoor seating, this location is still operating under pandemic constraints. While totally understandable, we had presumed otherwise. You still get the slice in a box - no sauces or other touches that made eating the dessert there special. Recommend taking it with you. This is truly an extraordinary place and hopefully, they will be able to resume normal operations, as the pandemic is finally behind us.
Delicious! 😋 This is my go to place to satisfy my sweet tooth craving. From the cakes down to the drinks, this place is doing things right. I forgot to mention the presentation of the desserts you are about to it, just overall satisfying. Must try it!
Correction- Always costly yet Occasionally extraordinary, desserts. A couple of the cakes are true winners. They usually sell out. I’ve tried other deserts there many times and just beautifully plated ok. Not tonight. Waited in line. Again, out of the amazing winners, so I ordered Caramelized Creme Brûlée Bun.. sounded good. Was very so so.. very little creme brulee.. heck even some whipped cream would have done it. Can get much better at 85 degrees for less money and less of a wait. And I’ve never had 85 degree lose my order. I waited as several people who ordered after me got there orders. Went in and showed them my receipt. They grabbed my receipt and didn’t seem to have the duplicate slip order on their end.The second desert, Linzer Danish, looked lovely but also tasted so so. No wow taste for sure. A grocery store has better than that. Sorry.. that’s it. I’ll call ahead and see if they have one of the two of the sure winners that day before I waste time money and calories.
This restaurant has two locations- this one is smaller than the downtown Little Italy one. Right now they don’t offer patio seating. The veggie BLT bread was great, missing a little bit of flavor but I’d still probably get it again and ask for more cheese or sauce. They are on the expensive end of the spectrum but worth checking out to treat yourself with quality desserts and amazing floral and gold touches.
Extraordinary desserts but not an extraordinary service, I heard about this place so much I was excited and made a stop for the first time this morning oct 5; as I walked in no one said hi, no one explained nothing there was staff member more focused on taking a picture of thy desserts he was platting than greeting me, I told him it was my first time and was ignored, until I had to speak up and asked where do I place my order …. Anyways my dessert looks bomb but I had a bitter experience from this store, I don’t recommend coming here perhaps another location is better.
The pastries look amazing, the one I had a blueberry cheesecake coffee cake and it was delicious. The tea was an entire rip off. Its a normal Earl grey tea in a to go cup for 9$ and the pastry was cheaper!! I would only recommend pastries here and not the beverages!!
Beautiful desserts, nice election and always delicious, Only negative take away was the long wait time. My last visit there was greeted by agitated employees, very busy time that I arrived, but could have been friendly. Still a great place and love their desserts.
Outstanding deserts! On the pricey side but cant find anything like it elsewhere. Very good and friendly customer service
I got a slice of Ivorie Royale OMG it was so good i went to sample a taste in my car and call back to get another slice they were sold out i should have got two slices did even leave ate it right outside in my car thats how good it was great customer service the guy working there recommend a great choice that you i most definitely will be back
I ordered a cake for my husbands bday. It was 95% frosting. Literally paid for a sliver of actual cake. So disappointing. Y’all see the cake to frosting ratio?! The cake part wasn’t even good. Also I received the wrong cake. Ended up throwing half of it away. Also customer service was bad, the gentleman helping me was kind but another rep was so rude while I asked for candles saying “this isn’t a free candle shop” not knowing I had purchased a cake.1/10 do no recommend.
Had some trouble locating the Bankers Hill location of Extraordinary Desserts after it moved across the street during our recent visit. Really missed the cozy vibe of the original location, but the new spot feels lot more spacious. The desserts and drink pairing are still one of the best. Having tried most of the cakes, theres pretty much no such thing as a wrong choice. The price is quite high for dessert; however, we view it as a curbing mechanism to prevent us from getting too much sugar into our system.
I only tried the scone so my review is solely based on that. It was just okay it would be better if it was served warm & there was more filling in it. The filling was also kind of sour Im guessing because of the fresh berries & no sweetener added (?)However everything looked pretty tasty & decadent. The flower petals are a nice touch. Place is clean & had lots to choose from.
I grew up in Europe eating pastries of France, Germany and Austria. The pastries here are overly sweet and badly executed. Fancy design but poor execution.
My favorite dessert place ever! Dont miss out!
Came in to get some pastries for the family. Been here multiple times and i loved it.. today the service was not that good..the guy with the ponytail started to take some orders since it was a lot of people in line and they just waned to get people in and out fast . Special since they just opened and it was only the two of them in front.. i asked for 4 pastries while I was waiting in line . When i got to the register I asked what Kind of cake they have by the slice since the line was moving I didn’t get a chance to see all of them so the person at the register told me (with a little attitude)whatever we have in the case and i think he realized how he said it so he changed his tone of voice and actually started to tell me what all they have . So i got the pastries and as i was walking out I realized i didn’t have all of the stuff I ordered so i had to get back in line and wait 20m since it got busy and it was only the two of them and he was just going back and forth with online orders . The lady that was in front of me complain about the wait time. They should have more people working…
Their food is usually amazing. With mask restrictions lifted we know the rules, businesses can choose to enforce the restrictions but come on, no eating even outside on a bench. Truly ridiculous, even more ridiculous is not allowing to use their restrooms even with medical / surgical needs. You choose to enforce the restrictions, we as customers choose not to come back until management decides to be like the rest of San Diego.
I used to love this place when I used to live in San Diego about 16 years ago. It was my go to place to take visitors for a great dessert and a great cup of coffee or tea. The original location was tiny but the decor and ambiance was a great counter point to the delicious desserts there. I had even considered proposing to my wife here.A few years ago I came back to this great place and it was as charming and delicious as I remembered it. It was a memory that was just as good as ever.Fast forward to 2019 and its new location. There is much more seating and the deserts are as delicious as I remembered but the atmosphere of the original location is lost. Now the decor is much more sterile and modern and somehow this makes the desserts here not so extraordinary.
If youre looking for gluten & dairy free options, the website advertises it but you have to order that ahead of time. May or may not be listed on the website but its not very user friendly so just FYI for other like me going out of their way looking for those options, order ahead or youre out of luck.
The desserts here are amazing, as is the tea. This time we had a lemon souffle herbal tea and a white chocolate raspberry linzer torte. The service was great—the person at the register took the time to go back to talk with the baker/chef to check ingredients for a good allergy. He had to do this several times until we found something that would work, and we appreciate his patience and thoroughness. The restaurant was very clean. The new location is nice, but has a less cozy feel. Its more urban and upscale/modern then their original location. It felt less like a specialty teashop and more like a place that would have trendy vibe during busier hours (we were there after lunch). The interior is small with limited seating. There is more seating on the patio which would be pleasant in nicer weather. One thing we found stylistically interesting was that the entrance blends in with the windows and finding the door was confusing at first until we came closer to it (see photos). This location now serves lunch items, the same as the Little Italy location.
We found this place on a complete whim after we wen to dinner and decided on our way to our airbnb that we wanted something sweet to take back. there were many options that all looked wonderful and the slice of cake i ended up getting was fantastic. but i pronounced it wrong since, i myself am not french, and the cashier looked at me like she would have rather punched me than take my order. if you hate your job that much, please get a new one!! i probably would go back if i was in san diego again but i hate getting that vibe from people that i’m just ruining their day by merely making a small mistake. i tried to laugh it off and said i totally bothered the name after she repeated the order and said it correctly, but she again just gave me a death stare. wish i saw her name but i guess if you see someone that looks miserable to be there, it’s her. anyway, here’s a picture of the cake i got, so good!! just don’t pronounce it wrong lmao
Beautiful desserts! Pretty pricey, plus there was a line out the door, but still worth the wait! They are not just beautiful, they are actually scrumptious too! Wish I had noticed their drink menu as well as desserts... they were so rich that a drink of some sort is very necessary! Get there as early as you can since later in the night the line got longer!
No Public Restroom - They directed me to the 7 eleven 3 blocks away. With that done, its a really nice little place to have dessert. Indoor and outdoor seating. No savory food but theres a vegetarian and vegan place next door.Desserts and tea are delicious and definitely big enough to share. I usually go to the other location which is bigger and has more of a selection.
Delicious chocolate cake. You cannot eat this without a scoop of vanilla, very very rich and decadent.
The slice of Blood Orange Ricotta cake showed slices of oranges on the showcase, but the slice served to me did not include the slice of orange.
The desserts are excellent but the customer service gets an F! If the business owner fails to offer customers chairs on the spacious patio so one may sit and eat, or a restroom, the owner doesn’t deserve customers.
I have a sweet tooth and have tried pretty much from their menu and usually, everything is tasty!! Whenever something goes wrong or just passing by always took some piece from there. Thank you guys for rising my mood and making me smile every time!)))
I love this place as a grab an go i do wish there were outside dinning in. But its still take-out. I do enjoy the variety of dessert they have a lot of their originals are there like the lemom tart, bread pudding, creme brulee, and some cakes to try as well. I do miss the tea pots though when you would dine in. Overall its still a great dessert shop.
Very Disappointed ! showed up with my family from Europe all excited to have the full experience of your Beautiful cakes & Deserts 🏜 To find out you dont have enough staff to enjoy our Coffee & Cakes inside or even outside! Spent $60 for it to go in a box with plastic separation that sticks ! Not our fault that you dont have staff and we pay same price for a box with no Beautiful touches ! It was my Birthday today as well as a surprise to parents. Surprise was on us.You should give people a discount. Thats only fair.
Best cake in town! Try their shangerila, match tiramisu and carrot cake.
It was my first time buying here at Extraordinary Desserts and will definitely not be the last. Purchased an 8 Tres Leches cake for my daughters birthday and that cake was amazingly scrumptious. A sliver was more than sufficient, each piece, each bite was such an experience. Extraordinary is an understatement!
Everything is delicious! The customer service is excellent. I havent had anything I didnt like. The tea is wonderful. Its very relaxing unless you go at a peak time. Then its a little crazy. And usually a long line. But worth it.
Beautifully crafted desserts. Taste of cheesecake was out of the world. By the sight of the cakes, you would feel like ordering everything out there. Cheesecake was so rich and creamy, if you dont have much of a sweet tooth, it would be difficult to finish up one whole cake :) We ordered 3 cakes and ended up packing up 2 of them :)Mushroom sandwich, personally we didnt like the taste much. The bread was pretty big and mushrooms were very less in quantity. Only reason to reduce the rating!
The desserts are phenomenal, great service, beautiful display, treat yourself!
It was definitely worth going to. The deserts were good but not as good as I had hoped for the value. They were beautiful though
One of our favorite places in San Diego! Love this location because of its proximity to Balboa Park. This lovely little shop is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. We love Chef Karens book, too!We enjoy taking guests from out of town here, as well as celebrating birthdays. Everything that we have tried is amazing. A favorite item besides the cakes is the dark chocolate shortbread. One tip, if you are getting an order to go, be sure to request the delicious sauces that accompany each cake - they really make the experience of eating them extraordinary.
Yummy chocolate dulce de leche cake 🎂!!! Never seen this favor anywhere else. Beautiful with red rose petals and gold flakes. Such good quality and the macadamia crunch is a nice touch to texture. Parking may be difficult as in March 2021 there was alot of road construction in front and around this store. Beautiful store too and very nice staff.
Lived up to the hype! Fantastic cake, 10/10 would eat again.
This has always been my favorite place. It still has the best desserts in terms of taste and presentation. BUT SINCE Covid, and only take out orders, they CHARGE THE SAME PRICE AND ONLY GIVE HALF THE SERVING SIZE! I never minded the high price for a single piece of dessert pre-Covid because the pieces were so big; 2 normal slices would be their 1 single serving. NOW, they give small ordinary sized desserts at the same HIGH price. Still good, but TOO EXPENSIVE FOR A SMALLER PIECE OF CAKE!! AN EXTRAORDINARY PRICE SHOULD YIELD AN EXTRAORDINARY RETURN.
Must visit place when in town. Took friends that dont have a sweet tooth but were amazed by their cakes. Outdoor seating area is nice.
Disappointing that theyre still only doing to-go and delivery when almost every other restaurant is back to dining in. The food is terrific but dining really brings the experience full circle. We gave carry-out a shot, but just want the same. I hope they open back up soon and dont try to take advantage of COVID by reverting to take-out only for sole purpose of maximizing profits like a few other restaurants are doing.
Everything I’ve ever had is amazing! There is sometimes a line to order and can take awhile but you do have the option to preorder online or on the phone.
The the 30 minute wait in line was worth it. Love the desserts they were amazing. I just could stop eating mines . Everyone was very patient in line while waiting to order their dessertsVery clean very cozy. I will be back !!!!A must go to place in San Diego
As I’m waiting to get my order but all these lines up made me take pictures of delicious looking pastries and cookies. One of my favorite. The name says it all.
Amazingly beautiful and delicious meals and desserts. Gracious staff and outdoor seating. Recently moved to expanded lication
I came here about 10 years ago when I lived in San Diego for a summer. It is as good as I remember it. The customer service is second to none, and they really take their time with each person.I ordered a mini chocolate and caramel bundt cake, a chocolate chip cookie, a scoop of chocolate brownie ice cream, and some caramel popcorn to take home. I split the bundt cake and scoop of ice cream with my mom and son, and took the rest home for later.Theres truth in advertising: the desserts here really are extraordinary.
Beautiful presentation of desserts. Tried the brownie cheesecake and the Princess Kaulani cake. Delicious. Note that they sometimes sell cake slices that are too small to be sold at original price, so they sell at a discounted price ($4) which was great for satisfying a sweet tooth without eating too many calories. These are in the second case youll see and you wont have the full choice of cakes.-1 for not opening their restrooms to customers. I had just come from walking around the bridges and had to look elsewhere.
Used to be fantastic. Lately, havent been experiencing that magic.
Not the same experience as Union St location. disappointed.
They have.moved to a nicer and bigger location. The most decadent cakes in town. My bf said that their Cappucino quality has improved, gotta be a new machine.
I have been coming here for a while now. Since my last visit they have moved west 1 block from there old location which I figured they outgrew. Now about their food. Best word to describe it is extraordinary. Its aesthetically pleasing as well as delicious. The staff has always been friendly, the wait to order can sometimes be long. Some would say the prices are high but your getting a great tasting item with a unique look your sure to remember.
Desserts are big enough to share unless you make that dinner which is fine with me! Everything is so pretty and there is so much variety anyone can go. Their chocolates are very rich and their non chocolates arent too sweet but def made from scratch. Love this place after a stroll through Balboa park
If you are a delivery driver it will take 10 mins to get your order even the order had been placed 30 mins before. Yes it takes 40 mins to take a slice of cake from the fridge to pack. Ah sorry, they have to give priority to the customers on line. The one order online doesn’t know what is going on. Super ethical!
My first time visiting since they moved from their old location. This place does amazing gluten free desserts and pastries. This visit, I tried a pavlova with fresh berries and a gluten free berry scone. On the savory side, they have gluten free baguettes, so I was able to have my first roasted portobello mushroom panini in years! The only bummer is that they’re still okay doing to-go orders and they won’t allow you to eat desserts outside. If it’s good weather, you can walk to the nearby park for a picnic.
My four year old needed to use the bathroom. They refused. It was the owners decision. I canceled our near $100.00 order. They show extraordinary bad ethics
A high end dessert place. Ive been to this location twice: once before they remodeled and once after. Its not that far from Balboa Park; if youre willing to take a bit of a walk, this is a nice location to go to after a day at the park. The location used to be difficult to spot, especially at night. The signage was too small and dark, and inside, it was small, cramped, and crowded. Now, with its bright, elegant logo, its much easier to identify.Went in the middle of the evening, and there was only a small wait. You need to go inside and order with the cashier, who will give you a number. Then you will have to find your own place to sit, and one of the staff will bring you your dessert. The desserts are incredibly rich and are definitely elegant since they are topped with flower petals and gold flakes. It was a bit loud inside, so we ended up sitting outside under the heaters. This place is definitely pricey, so I would recommend sharing a slice if you are stopping in for a dessert. Both times I shared with the other member of my party, and having one serving of dessert was more than enough for both of us.
I really like this place. It’s a must if you are in the area; specially if you are just visiting San Diego. Huge selection of desserts and nice variety of drinks and food. This place is always in high demand so expect some waiting before you can enjoy this fabulous desserts. 4 starts only because they are super busy and some of the time they don’t get your order right. It happened to me on different occasions. Overall is worth it and a great place to stop by.
Desserts taste good, but customer service is horrible. When I entered, 2 employees were folding boxes, one employee was on her phone, one employee was washing something in the sink. Me and another customer stood there for at least 5 minutes before I asked if someone could help me. The girl on her phone offered me one of those apologies where you know she is rolling her eyes and calling you a potty-mouth word in her head. She also did not package the gluten free items together and the non-gluten free items together like I asked. I will not be returning.
We visited here on a Sunday and there was a line out the door at 6:00 pm. Their desserts are so pretty to look at they taste just as good or better. We tried their Shangri la cake and it was absolutely delicious. We are in town for a couple of days and we are going back for more tomorrow!
Masterfully thought out and prepared desserts, just as good as the downtown location. Among the best few confectionaries in San Diego and by far the best sweets concept. The wide variety guarantees something for every taste but prepare to wait in a long line for your treat. Well worth it though.
Im not a big dessert person. Only went here because I had a gift card. The desserts look fantastic and taste really good. A little too expensive and hard to find parking for me to go there again.
Excellent dessert/pastry shop. Tried several items and all the them fresh and extremely good. A most stop for everyone out there
The desserts are very pretty but the one I had I think it was to sweet, the one my friend had was better (napoleon). The tea is good. If this place was closer to were I live I would go more often.
If you want to see and taste a superior quality dessert, this is the place for you.
Delicious desserts in a small cafe setting. They have a great selection of drinks, my favorite is the pink hot chocolate. The service is amazing, everyone is polite and upbeat. My only issue is that the bathroom has been broken for a while and its very inconvenient.
Like dessert? Like it served in new and beyond ordinary? Then you Ill love trying something here. Everything is visually captivating. And the taste... extraordinary! Your taste buds will jump for joy.
The BEST extravagant desserts! Definitely over the top, but awesome for a celebration. It gets crowded, but that’s for a reason!
Love them all im in love again...
A San Diego classic. I really love the desserts here. The quality has remained the same over the years and their tea and coffees are good too.The Hillcrest/Bankers Hill location is noce and intimate. A great date spot. The Little Italy location is more urban with trendy downtown night life vibe. Great for groups...gets very packed there.
Upscale cafe with very pretty desserts; about $10-15 for a serving and worth it, very tasty; we visit every time we come to San Diego
The name pretty much sums up the experience!
This place is great. Desserts galore!! I highly recommend if you are in downtown SD to come here and get some dessert! So Good!! Awesomeness!!
Y’all. Go here. It’s so cute and upscale. The bathrooms were immaculate and I will definitely be making this a favorite spot. Thanks Extraordinary Desserts!
All desserts are presented so nicely in a giant display case and the staff is just as sweet as the desserts. They also offer food. I always am so excited to drop by whenever I am in the area, but then instantly regret my choice to consume something with so much sugar. The desserts taste just as good as they look.
The name says it all !! Whether its a special occasion or just a simple thank you,, the pastries and desserts are always a home run. Quality and a gorgeous presentation always has me coming back for more. Id like to say thank you to the folks that work there for being so helpful and having a smile on their face. It says a lot !
You want desserts? I recommend this place to anybody. The dessert options are numerous and the desserts themselves are luscious and rich. My girlfriend and I went here after dinner and wanted some dessert. She had the chocolate chip cookie and an individual cheesecake. I had a chocolate Bundt cakes and a blueberry coffee cake with a cheesecake middle plus a double maciatto. Everything was great and very delicious.
Was there to pick up Cake w/Family...
The name says it all. Worth the trip!
So. You will wait in line for awhile, maybe even an hour. But be prepared for heaven. It is so totally worth it. I am in love. Good coffee. Great desserts. Its a must visit while in San Diego. I ordered a Birthday cake for my sister last year. With the flowers and gold leaf. It was by no means not a splurge. But its so good. Omg. Nothing Ive tried here is bad. The counter setup is odd. The building at Balboa location needs to be reconfigured for better flow for ordering and seating. It makes no sense. It would speed ordering too. But the taste will always have you company back for more. And they are open until 12am.
The dessert here are amazing. They are a little pricey but they are worth it. The desserts are made to look very elegant and the flavors are outstanding.
Always a must go to spot whenever I’m in town. Been coming here for about 10 years or so now and they have yet to disappoint. Although the prices have gone up over the years there is still no other place that I have come across that can compete with these cakes and the artistry that goes into making each of them. Either come here before the dinner rush or late night, unless you like waiting in long lines and having a dirty table to sit at, it can be difficult to take care of as many people as they serve during their rush.
Nice time to be there. Many local go for a cake and coffee for relax. Can park outside of it
Amazing desserts and great service! One of my friends has talked this place up for a while now, so we went here for dessert after dinner and we were not disappointed.
Amazing!!! Tried to go late on a Saturday night and the line was down the street. I went back 15 minutes early Sunday morning and was first in line. The options were mini creations of art. The presentation was superb. I had the banana cream pie tart and each of the chocolate chip cookie options. They were well worth going back for!
Absolutely amazing! Like...ah-ma-zing! A must do when visiting downtown San Diego. They also have vegan and gluten free options.
I have visited this place multiple times during my first trip to San Diego, and all I can say is that I am really happy I do not live in the neighborhood. Their desserts are pieces of art.
Confounding maze entry and industrial design makes for an uncomfortable experience. It looks like an entry to a dystopian bank. Food was good if pricey.
Now we know why there was such a long line! This place was absolutely amazing! Even though there was a line the cashier took her time to ask us questions about what we liked and made recommendations accordingly. Bring a sweet tooth and your wallet because this place isnt cheap but worth every penny!!
