I ordered a radio a few weeks ago, but it is still on backorder (as are many radios due to a current chip shortage). Jerry checked on my order and provided the latest updates, along with the number of units on order vs those on back-order. I appreciate the visibility as to where the order stands. Jerry could have just said Still on backorder and left it at that. The fact that he provided additional was reassuring and good customer service.

Very cold and unhelpful.. made us feel unwelcome. Ended up getting what we wanted but it was like pulling teeth.Not a very good help to new ham operators. Wish they were better and more open to help new hams.

Upon entering I was surprised at how laid back the staff was. There wasnt the usual sales person assault you would expect from a smaller type of establishment. After a couple of minutes of browsing around, I was approached by Ron who was very pleasant knowledgeable and helpful, completely opposite of the descriptions found in other reviews. Once I explained what I was trying to do and how I had little experience with CB radios, He was more than accommodating. He explained what tuning an antenna was and even went so far as to take a mount out to my vehicle to demonstrate how easy installation could be. When I explained I was looking for a different style of mount, he was very understanding and said once I found the type I was looking for to make sure it is properly grounded and to come back so he could check it out and make sure it is tuned properly. this is the kind of customer service that will bring me back to Ham Radio Outlet

This place intrigued me and my interest in Ham radio. The guys that work there seem to think that the potential customers understand what they are talking about. If they want to sell equipment and get people involved they really should go slower and be clear.

I am a sight-impaired ham and I went to the San Diego HRO for a radio. I was helped by an older man named Ron. I will never again ask for his assistance. I would rather wait an hour for anyone else.While TELLING ME what I need instead of asking me what I wanted, his personal cell phone rang three times and each time hed stop and answer his phone. I find that very rude and unprofessional.Forget getting a word in edgewise with this salesman. He is quick to assume what you are about to say and tries to answer it before you can complete your though.Overall, it was a very trying experience!

The staff are very knowledgeable and quite friendly. They even provide free coffee and donuts and a chat when its slow. They are easy to get to but the shared parking lot is overly busy and too small for the location.

Having a Ham Radio Outlet right in town is a rare treat just for that. Most of the world doesnt have that. And the folks that work there are all first rate. You a Ham, or want to be? Get there!!

The sales person was helpful and polite (Joe Acevido))however I was charged $32.95 for a study guide that is priced $29.95 on the price tag and in their catalog,so $35 something out the door.I drove over there so I paid for it anyways.I wanted to do business with an actual local business but it looks like future HAM purchases will be made online (not HRO or Amazon ).After reading their response I reconsidered and bought a ht radio and rubber duck .They have good prices and its nice to shop at an actual store if people keep buying on line theres not going to be any more cash or stores.the sales people were polite.

Great service and knowledgeable staff. Large selection of radio equipment and accessories. One of the service reps was very kind to help me calibrate the cb antenna on my Jeep with a handheld meter. He also pointed me to the accessories and adapteters needed to extend the range of my ham radio. They also sell the latest training materials to help you prepare for the new 2018 license exam.

The guys there got me dialed in on a kenwood radio for listening and transmitting during off road races.

My favorite place to purchase amateur radios, accessories, and antennas. They are always available to answer questions you may have.

The people working here are absolute jerks. (I honestly cannot find another more polite words to describe them). They have a pathetic snobby attitude; and definitely have no time to deal with amateurs or uninformed customers. I have attempted to reach out at them several times in the past and I always encounter this awful demeaning attitude from all of them. You better make sure you do some extensive research before coming over or you will face their ire. Last time I visited them, I had to apoligize ahead of time and still couldnt get a polite reaction. Please do everyone a favor: if after reading this review, you feel the same way, make sure you post your experience here and like this review so we can warn other of the awful experience ahead of time. BTW, no I am not overly sensitive, I just venting here because in these times of internet competitiveness, there is no place for attitudes like this and, unless they change their ways, they will drawn in their own grandiosity.

Every visit is truly a pleasure, not to mention the number of times I have called with questions, someone is always ready and willing to answer my sometimes stupid questions (us new hams have to learn), we rely on the Elmers ! As a Ham radio operator HRO is well known for complete support and supply. For the aspiring ham its a good place to learn how to get started. CB and many other radio modes of operations also are available at HRO. Many off road enthusiasts get supplies here. Preppers can find answers to questions and technician exam materials here.

This store definitely has a wide selection of ham radio gear. Being a new ham, I decided to visit a brick and mortar store instead of purchasing online. I let the sales staff know I was new and asked for suggestions. They were less than forthcoming and responded as though they were somewhat irritated they had to do a bit of teaching. Now, I had done my research beforehand and had an idea what I was searching for but getting their opinion was like pulling teeth. I had to settle for what I had researched. They get a star for having everything in stock.After my first experience, I took a friend of mine, also a new ham, to purchase another HT. We decided to buy the same thing I had (Yaesu FT-60R), which HRO had in stock. After getting the HT home 75 miles away (Yes, we traveled to visit a brick and mortar store TWICE), we realized the wrong charger was included in the box. Several phone calls to HRO and they have refused to advance the correct cradle. They have confirmed we have the wrong one (One for a LiOn battery was incluced, not NiMH) but have not corrected the issue. Its been three weeks and after spending close to $500 there, the least they could do is pay shipping to correct the mistake, which they have refused. They are demanding we drive 150 miles round trip for a $20 cradle. So, were stuck with one charger for two HTs. Ill chose a different store to do business next time.I rarely write reviews of stores but felt compelled to write this one as they have been less than helpful in correcting the mistake. All were asking is to receive what we paid for.

Similar to other reviews Ive seen. The employees are rude about anything you ask. It was my first time there and they just show that they dont care about their customers. I wont be going back there again. You would think that the owner would get that shop into shape after all the negative being said.

I have been to many of the HRO locations and the one in San Diego is my least favorite. The staff is generally surly, unhelpful, and uncommunicative. I once gave one of the employees there my credit card for a purchase and he took my card and walked away and into the back of the store...leaving me to wonder what he was doing with it.I try to make my ham radio purchases locally to help keep specialty stores open, but HRO San Diego gives me a really good excuse to shop for Ham Radio gear on the Internet.

Jan. 2013: I bought a microphone as a xmas gift, but it was for the wrong radio. I exchanged it unused in box for the right one, but when I eventually looked at the receipt, they charged me a restocking fee! I am not a happy customer! I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future, and I suggest you do the same.
