I was surprised to discover this small shop tucked inside James Coffee. What caught my eye was their beautiful line of playing cards, occupying one entire wall. Once inside, I found it filled with beautifully crafted models of antique puzzles curated from around the world. For an aficionado like me the hands-on activity areas where you can try your skills at solving mechanical puzzles or arranging wooden pieces into tangram figures were a real treat. Before I noticed, Id spent an entire hour lost in the moment. Truly a magical experience!

Cool little shop! Walk in like youre going to get coffee and its on your right. Was a smaller spot than I thought it would be but every inch of space has interesting stuff to check out. Something of note if theres a card you see sold out online stop by the shop. I got the Noc color grades that said they were out online as well as the Flux. Will definitely return. Also with the stuff going on only two people at a time in the shop.

THE FINAL WORD IN EXPERIENTIAL RETAIL. I went to Art of Play for their grand opening. This curated shop has everything from puzzles, to well crafted household goods disguised as optical illusions. The design of the store is incredible and has a great layout. The storekeeper is incredibly kind. The neighborhood is very walkable and cozy with kind neighboring businesses. If you are debating going, GO!

We had two exchange students who were mad about cardistry and magic and so we took them to the Art of Play showroom. They were absolutely blown away by the showroom- all the puzzles, cards, games, and mysteries. I was also amazed- I didnt know such a place existed! The showroom had lots of areas to freely explore and even find a secret passage. We lucked out and Dan was there -you would have thought he was Elvis the way the exchange students reacted! Dan was so much fun- he took the time to exchange cardist moves and card tricks, explain puzzles, and generally encourage our exploration. Highly, highly recommend making an appointment and going to see for yourself!

This place is awesome! I had found it online before I went to San Diego and was so excited because we dont have many playing card/puzzle stores where I live, and I was blown away! They have so many options for cardists, magicians, and people who just want something to do. Not only that, but the person working there at the time, I believe his name is Adam (if I am wrong, I am so sorry guy working there) was extremely helpful and answered all of my questions, as well as showed me some magic tricks, and for a magician, it is so cool to be able to see someone else try and fool you (He did fool me, he did a really awesome card to pocket). For those card collectors out there, they have some really rare cards as well, including, but not limited to, White-Gold Monarchs, Smoke and Mirrors, and JAKQ. I had such a great time there, and Id recommend it to anyone. Also, I dont know if you guys read these, but hi Dan & Dave!

Such an incredible space! If you have voracious curiosity and love to play with beautifully designed objects, then Art of Plays pop-up will blow your mind. They offer the worlds most unique playing cards, luxury board games, magical objects for your home, and amusing toys that will seriously take you back to moments of childhood wonder. Ask their shopkeeper, Adam, to take you on a tour. Youll feel like youre in an interactive magic show, where you are the magician! Its also the perfect place to shop for someone who seems to have everything.

Ive been a shopper of Art of Play since 2015. The designs and collaborations by Dan & Dave are mind-boggling it seems. I love the history and the effort that they apply to their art.My wife and I came from NC and had not realized there was a showroom that we could visit. But after I emailed to ask if I would be able to visit, they have happily agreed to give us a showroom tour this afternoon (Thank you, Jen!) even though they dont typically give tours on the weekend. This is an experience I will never forget.I will continue doing business with Art of Play for years to come, and I am thrilled to see what they come up with next!

I was lucky enough to attend the Play Capsule Grand Opening Im glad I did. First off the space is really amazing, in what looks like an old airplane hangar, the shop fits in perfectly with the selection of other small businesses co-habiting the hangar. Inside the actual shop is nothing short of amazing. Not a relatively big space, but the use of the space is well done. Lets start with the MASSIVE card wall, that in itself is impressive for a collector such as myself, moving onto to the various objects of curiosity on of thr main thinyfs I really like is that the product itself is out and ready to be tested or played with (they encourage it). The staff is helpful and informative and the vibe is definitely welcoming. If youre in the San Diego area its worth checking out. Great job and congrats on the space! Ill definitely be back!
