Always a clean store . Lot of food variety. Fresh Produce, lots of Frozen foods. Cakes and pies are very tasty. Many varieties of breads and cookies. Lots of choices for meats, poultry and fish. A relaxed way of shopping.
Had to make a quick run to the grocery store for the family while visiting in Santa Cruz. Was very impressed with the size and variety of items within this particular Safeway. Being someone who appreciates places that offer organic options, the store had a reasonable amount of good produce (as well as packaged organic goods) in addition to its regular fare. Its very clean and well laid out. A good place to go if you need to make that quick grocery trip!
Where are all the cashiers? 5 minutes to grab what i need and 30 minutes in line to check out. pa-lease! like 19 registers. 11 regular, 6 self check, 1 at customer service in the deli and yes i believe 1 in the Floral Dept, pharmacy. go figure. like to see Sal and Mario come out of hiding in office and open some registers when theres a line out the door. they can ring too. ever here of cross training?hey, selling hot food w/ foodstamps. shame on you$20 grilled cheese to go w/ my $5milkshakemmm...
In my opinion, this Safeway is the best one in the county. It is very clean and well supplied. The produce is always fresh. The lines are never as long here and the self check out is rarely crowded. The people shopping here a much more mellow than the other Safeways. I think because there is not a parking problem and checkout runs much more smoothly.
Even though this Safeway is large it was well organized. It was Easy to find items I was looking for. Deli was clean and well staffed. I will go back.
This place is ridiculous. During peak times you are lucky to have 2 check aisles open. Lines all the way to the back of the store. And for some reason they close the self checkouts!! If you have one item you are forced to wait through it all for what should be a quick trip. Get it together!
The safe way quality quality you come to expect but placed in a Santa Cruz world. The lines here can get to be 20-30 minutes long and there are always security watching out. The store itself has an amazing selection and is definitely the best place to get groceries on mission street. Would highly recommend.
Waited at the deli counter for 20 minutes. Still no service, talked to the guy behind the counter but he just kept on making sandwiches on the other end. Company needs to hire more people or pay a competitive rate to get people that want to work here in this economy
I do lunch deli. Good, although lately Im told that they are not getting certian basic stuff like oven gold turkey delivered. Seems like a management issue for a deli.
There have been many times that I have stood there in lines to the back of the store and seen no management dealing with the situation. People cutting in line, cashiers having long moments of small talk while dozens of people wait and their perishables thaw. Prices for a lot of things are just ridiculous, but I suppose they know there is not much competition to worry about.
The only open cash register had a cashier with a terrible cough. She was wearing a mask but coughed all over our food. So we moved to the self check out. The kiosk required assistance and the cashier tending to the self check out ALSO had a cough and coughed all over our groceries. The manager was standing right there watching to approve the transaction. This cashier was wearing a badge that read cleared. Idk what that means, but if they have any symptoms they should be sent home on paid sick leave since working retail is hazardous during a pandemic in an area with delta outbreaks. Safeway needs to step it up for their employees AND customers... I am severely disappointed and completely grossed out. I even showed up late at night to avoid crowds and people - only to deal with several coughing cashiers.
We were looking for a specific item and couldn’t find it. We found Buddy and asked for assistance. Buddy went above and beyond helping us find the item and in the end he even opened a package that had the item in it and gave it to us for free. That is customer service to the nth degree!!!
Nice atmosphere! Very clean and kind of classy like. One of the nicer Safeways Ive seen.
I think Safeway is very expensive but every time Ive been in there I have found things I could never find anywhere else. And Im not saying everything is expensive. The most cleanest of all grocery stores. It always looks like new no matter what Safeway Ive ever been in
Typical safeway with overpriced goods. The difference here is that its highly understaffed. Every time I come here, I wait in a 15 minute line, at the minimum. You would think that management would hire more people to open more registers when lines are going down aisles. The last time I was there, it was even worse with the self checkout kiosks closed.
A great veriety of all your needs. CUT FLOWERS ARE PRICED TO SELL NICE..BUT JUST WATCH THEIR MEATS THAT ARE MARKED DOWN. THEY COULD B OLD AND RANSID ..I BROUGHT MY ITEMS BACK WITHOUT INSIDENT....SO JUST BEWARE OF THEIR MEATS. ..ITS A HUGH PLACE AND AWAYS CLEAN...
I went in today to get myself a sandwich and other goodies. The young guy who made my sandwich and got me the chicken drumsticks and macaroni was so nice. Thats the type of people I like seeing working he had a smile and ready to help me. He definitely deserves a shout out even a raise. I would definitely go back.
The only thing that is slightly annoying is this dark haired employee, glasses, excessive rings, with alot of jewelry and accessories (including an ASP baton, which is amazing considering his profession). He is loud, abrasive, and sometimes, creepy.EVERYTHING he does is loud, from typing to customer service, like he is begging to be noticed, at whatever cost.Being an employer myself, I know he will deny, protest, change for a month (if that), then relapse to his nature. My point is, tone it down bro. We are here to get groceries, not waltz on the dance floor of your ego.
Safeways are always descent an moreless friendly and helpful
All around good produce and friendly staff but man the lines are unreal. They never have more than 2-3 checkout counters open... what’s the deal?
Decent store but the service and staff here are the WORST. Whoever is managing staff here is blowing it. There are 15 checkout lanes but 2 staff, no matter what day or time. I would rather spend an arm and a leg at new leaf around the corner than lose an hour of my life waiting on these check out lines.
As one who usually shop at smaller Safeways, this Westside one feels like a palace of Safeways,,, well stocked and the employees are very nice.
What could I possibly say that would improve the public perception of this place? Maybe that I shop at new leaf normally lol. Ya 👅
Produce was excellent and everyone was very covid conscious.
Its a large store, well stocked and helpful staff.
No complaints about the store or service. Just want to let it be known that if you buy alcohol from here the cashier will ask you to pull your mask all the way down to make sure your face matches the picture on the ID. I tried pulling it down halfway to at least keep my mouth covered and they insisted I pull it all the way down. This has happened twice now so it appears to be a store policy. Interestingly enough, the other Santa Cruz Safeway doesnt ask you to do this so I guess the store manager at this location decided to make their cashiers do this.I understand that enforcing the drinking age is still important during a pandemic, but sticking to the mask mandate and being able to keep your mask on the entire time youre in the store seems more important.
Great, but no non-sugar bread.
Best store with a huge selection and wonderful fresh produce and bakery goods.
A favorite with students and tourists, it is best to avoid the weekend evenings due to long lines.Despite the large number of checkstands they are loathe to open more then a couple.Despite all that it is still our go to place for a great selection of produce, meats, and what have you.
Cleanest safeway in the county with the best selection next to the one on 41st Ave. Probably some of the worst customer service in my opinion. Ive been going here my entire life and the older employees who have been working for at this location for years are great. However the newer employees are rude, disrespectful, and not worth the paper their checks are printed on. I have no misconception about how difficult it is to find good employees especially during the pandemic when most people can make more money on unemployment but some changes should be considered. An employee told my 4 year old daughter to get away, step back! because she needed her 6 feet. No 4 year old understands covid and has an understanding of what 6 feet looks like. You shouldnt work in customer service if you dont know how to address a child and have an understanding of the word service.
Staff is unbelievably lazy. I had to go up to over 8 employees to find an item. They either didn’t know where my item was in the store, or didn’t know what it is — and that’s ok.What isn’t ok is that NONE of them would help me find another employee that did know where it was. They just said “sorry” and shrugged me off. I’d give 0 stars if I could for making it take 30 minutes to find a single item while employees stand around with their hands in their pockets.Whoever trains workers at this location should be fired.
Curbside service is terrible. Specific complaints: 1.) Almost every time, I am charged for items I dont receive. It is necessary to check the contents of the bags against the orders every time. 2.) Often there is no receipt given to check if you have been cheated, so one needs to contact customer service to get a receipt. 3.) Unlike Nob Hill you are told to wait for a text to tell you your order is ready. Sometimes I receive the text but my order isnt ready. 4.) They took away the dedicated parking spots for pickup orders. When you attempt to pick up your order curbside, security guards shoo you off.I am so fed up with this store that I will not return to it, even after the pandemic ends. Im shopping at Nob Hill from now on, even if it means a longer drive.
People that work thier are very nice! Clean and reasonable prices
A usual Safeway that is well done, clean and efficient.
Great prices, clean store I just love it
Great food, amazing water front views, but there is a wait
Selection isnt the best (e.g. no stationery whatsoever) but, well, its a Safeway.
This location is dimly lit. Halfway through shopping I started getting a headache, felt like I was squinting at everything. The lines were halfway down the isle because they only had 2 registers open. Hopefully it is because of covid, having every other lane open but if they opened the opposite ones it would have at least given a third lane. We did have one super nice cashier, wish I got his name, who earned this location one more star.
Spacious, clean and usually well stocked. Cashiers are friendly and efficient. Perks- look for the “Oops we baked too much” display shelf hidden towards the corner at the end of the bread section. They offer various baked goods- cookies, muffins, pies, strudels and bundt cakes for half price. And no, they aren’t stale, actually fresh. Downsides- I wish they were still open24 hours and it sucks to be there around 9-10 pm on nights when a bus load of college kids are stocking up and they only have one cashier!! But fortunately that’s the only time you’ll see long lines. Between the cashiers and the self serve kiosks you can get in and out pretty fast. Good job Safeway!
First time here. Wonderful store. Helpful and friendly people. Clerks circling the store and helpful.
The lines were quick and theres social distancing for the self checkout. The shelves were stocked. The previous week Id tried online purchase with store pick which didnt go quite as well. Apparently only half my order was available despite only finishinh the online order a few hours earlier. It also wasnt clear where to park and wait. It was an interesting experience though.
Its a solid Safeway, that looks a little old. Smaller than the one in westside Santa cruz
Red velvet cake was sooo good thank you Safeway
Great store. Everything u need in one stop....clean GREAT STAR BUCKS INSIDE
Excellent customer service. Staff is always friendly, smiling and very helpful.Their deli and bakery are the best in the area.
My only issue is they rearranged the store nothing is where it used to be. I feel like Helen Keller when I go in there. Ugh!
Big store, has a Starbucks and a nice Bakery as well.
One of the bigger Safeways I have been in. They have a large selection, and is very well layed out.The deli is big with lots of fresh options.
Really Nice, Im Not From The Area, So Whrn I Went There It Was Nice And More Organized Than Any Other Safeway, Most Importantly They Made Sure Everyone Was Social Distancing... Stop By And LMK What You Think On Instagram @Pookie_F_Baby
Very clean very courteous people doing the best they can with the pandemic going on trying to keep everyone safe super nice employees very helpful also
Always love shopping here when we are in town
Dont use their bathroom, worse than any porta john Ive ever been in and Ive been thru 40 states. Absolutely disgusting.
Always shop here. love how clean and organized it is. staff are so helpful and nice.
Nice layout good selection but loss prevention employees will be on your heels breathing down your neck if you look the slightest bit homeless they assume we are all thieves or something just because of our economic circumstances. Frustrating but a hungry guy will overlook alot. Thanks for listening to my rant
Clean and well stocked friendly store.
They have everything, and at decent prices.
Quick self checkout, w/o alcohol!
Umm im about to go get a frozen pizza here
Store okay but parking terrible.
Everytime I go there to buy wet food for my cat the shelves are bare
Checkout lines take forever here.
This location is not doing enough to be Covid safe. The aisles are VERY narrow. Why can’t they widen them?? You have people passing next to you or hovering behind you the whole time. Then the checkout lines form in every other aisle, so you are exposed again with people trying to shop those aisles. They never have enough cashiers or baggers, so it takes forever to get checked out. Overall, terrifying experience if you are paranoid about getting the virus. If it was a mom and pop grocery store I would give it some slack, but this is a huge corporation. Come on Safeway.
Not staffed well enough
Ludacris. The lines were exponentially long and the reason was 2 checkers for about 200 people. They need to get it together.
Decent grocery store, make sure to use the sales, and be careful abt covid safety in here as many customers aren’t
This is a very big and clean store. The check out out process is unbelievably awful. The lines a 10 deep without any assistance from staff. They could better serve their customers but they really don’t care.
Just picked up a few things! Expensive!!
The Safeway on mission is the most complete one I have been in. I think they could keep the bathroom open a little later, as this is the only place that has a restroom on the Westside after dark.
Huge store...only 2 check out stations were open. Lines were from the front registers to the back of the store! They are well stocked-- Ill give them that...
I love shopping at the Safeway on Mission st. So much variety and it has a Quest Diagnostic.
Place is just what it describes to Safeway to shop
Nice big safeway store.
Almost too much stuff!
Very good store
I great help at the deli
People are too busy to help out . We waited 15 minutes at the deli. The workers were there but i guess not to help the public . They saw us but we go ignored
New safeway style large and roomie aisles for shoppers deli,or coffee shop available
Rude, unhelpful employees. Stood at customer service for 10 mins waiting for help, while at least 4 employees walked by and ignored me.
Great store. Has a large beer and wine selection.
The remodel is huge. Food court with sushi & sandwiches. Fresh baked cookies & birthday cake. Incredible wine selection.
Packed store with two registers open and massive lines...........theres no way this corporation gives a s..t
The employees would definitely benefit from learning how to be less judgemental and less condescending.
They got what u need early and on time
Stop moving everything around!
I always get good help when I go to Safeway on Mission street in Santa Cruz. Everyone is very polite and helpful.
Seems like the 1 or 2 items I really like are always out. The checkers are almost always rude or weird. When you do get someone to bag your groceries they are slow and put your eggs and bread on the bottom of the bag to get smashed. Lines are always extremely long. I dont like going in there
Very clean and variety items. This is the best Safeway store I have ever seen.
Great grocery store! Great deals & great staff members
Shop here alot. Just wish they would carry more Organic Veges and fruit than they do
They are doing well keeping things sanitized and safe. People coming in, not so much. Many not following the easy to follow directions. Some not wearing masks once they get past the doors.
The young manwho helpedme at the meat case was polite and thoughtful. Unfortunately the personwho was attendingthe help kiosk at self checkout was rude obnoxious and wasnt doing his job..Selection was good and their is always one of those guys around. So I give the place a four star.
Great selection of products, many of which are scattered all over the very large store. Slow check out experience.
2 days in a row we have dealt with rude and unprofessional employees. First day we waited in line for 10-15 minutes for self checkout with a 6 pack and all the rest of our groceries, which is fine, but we were told once we got to the register that we couldn’t buy that there and had to go wait in another line to buy it. No where did it say or did anyone tell us before hand that we had to go elsewhere, and they waited to tell us until we had rung everything up. The employee was quite rude about it as well. Next day, I waited in a similar length line only to be told now that I can’t pay cash there either, even though the sign says “CASH, debit, credit, and check”. Had to go wait in yet another line and deal with a cashier who acted like me using cash was disgusting..... I’ve never had a bad Safeway experience until I came here. I’m glad I never have to come back to this Safeway.
Pretty dece
My family and I have been loyal Safeway customers for years, and never have I been treated like this before. Despite there being a county mandate to wear masks in public, which is enforceable by law, I have still been asked to remove my mask for identification at checkout. It is appalling that during a national emergency and public health crisis customers and workers are being put at risk by outdated policies. At the time of purchase, I was about two feet away from the cashier and there wasnt a sneeze guard or physical barrier. When I indicated that I felt uncomfortable removing the mask, the cashier informed me that it was a requirement to remove the mask to see my face. This is extremely dangerous for Safeways customers and employees, and it also puts their workers at unnecessary risk of exposure. To remove a face mask, not only does it violate CDC guidelines, but one must also touch their face at least twice-- with the same gloves/hands that have been touching everything else in the store. It not only compromises the fit of the mask, but it also introduces the possibility of the inside of the mask to become contaminated. This defeats the purpose of wearing a mask in the first place. In addition, while handling my license, my cashier was required to have me hand it to her, which increases the risk of cross contamination, since she would also need to handle the register afterwards. When I raised my concerns to Safeways customer service line, I was informed that the new policy stated that they could not ask customers to remove their masks. However, in the follow up email I was told that, despite the public health order, it was still necessary for customers to remove their masks. The inconsistency is alarming because it is not unreasonable to implement new training to identify people from the upper facial features, as other grocery chains have been practicing. Even if other customers arent buying alcoholic beverages, they are still closely interacting with employees who have been put at risk of exposure, which means that this policy affects everyone there. They should either change their identification process or stop selling alcohol at all. I hope that they update their policies because I will not be returning until these issues are addressed, and I cannot, in good conscience, refer my community to this store.
My neighborhood super-supermarket, always reliable.
Clean great overall
