My car broke down about 15 miles away from Alton’s automotive. It was a Sunday so no shops were open. This was a fairly stressful situation as I live 70 miles from where my car broke down. Lou answered the phone and I was relieved because I was in need of a saving grace. After I told him about what was going on he immediately assumed the absolute worst was wrong with my car and said it would cost me a minimum of 2,000. He instantly turned an already stressful situation into a devastating situation. I wasn’t too sure what to do but my options were limited and so I called Lou back and we spoke some more about my car. I towed my car to his shop and in the morning I called to give him some more information on what was going on. Lou told me that he was going to charge $90 an hour to diagnose my car and “it could take up to 5 hours, maybe even more”. I was so confused because every other mechanic shop I know charges a flat diagnostic rate. So I asked him about a flat rate and he responded in an aggressive manor, “that’s not how things work”. I told him that I had wished he had told me this yesterday during one of the two calls because I would not have towed my car to his shop if I would have known. He then responded even more aggressively and told me that he no longer wanted to work on my car and hung up the phone. At this point I was so frustrated because I had my car towed to his shop. I called him back and he didn’t even answer the first time but when he finally answered I tried to de-escalate the situation and he was nothing but rude, ill-mannered and unprofessional. I would never trust this shop with my car and I truly believe he was trying to take advantage and make a fast one. I immediately got my car towed from his shop and took a loss on the tow to his shop, but it ended up being the best decision I made. Turns out the issue with my car is very minor and will cost me less than $500 including the diagnostic fee. If I would have went to Alton’s Automotive that’s how much I would have paid for the diagnostic alone. All in all, I’m very grateful that Lou treated me this way because it opened my eyes and made me realize that I would never want him to work on a vehicle of mine.
Great experience and great service. They put exhaust system on my Silverado and did the work awesome and timely. I will definitely be a return customer.
It is now ABET/Alton with Lawrence Ulibarri as the owner/operator. Nice and friendly staff. 4x4s and off roaders welcome here. Custom exhausts, tire mounting, and lifts plus the routine maintenance stuff and alignments.
Nice people. Fast professional service.
