I almost missed this place due to the lack of a sign but she has the basics and certainly had the knitting needles I wanted. Pretty medium selection but I did find some beautiful alpaca! Please support this shop. She’s the only one in town and she really does a good job supporting the fibre community in Sioux Falls.

I have been to many yarn shops and this is one of the best. A bit off the beaten path, but worth a visit. Athenas also has just about every knitting toy you might need or want. Classes and knitting circles are also available.

A huge selection of beautiful yarns and almost any knitting accessories you might need. I was looking for a specific fiber and she was able to tell me exactly which yarns had it, and they had the perfect amount in store for my project. Would definitely recommend and will be back for future yarny projects.

I do not like leaving 2-star reviews but my first visit to Athena Fibers yesterday was so negative that I feel the need in this case. I am an experienced knitter and primarily shop online but after years of knowing about this store, I finally stopped in.The sign on the door said Closed and when I told the woman working she shrugged and continued talking to someone at the counter. The worker was just explaining what Ravelry is to the woman, so it wasnt like she was having a business related conversation. I walked around the store for a bit and did notice that the yarn selection is excellent and the prices are very good. I was surprised that they had cheaper yarn like $8 skeins because I assumed they mostly carried high end yarns. This is why I am giving them 2 stars instead of 1 star.I finally went and stood near the worker at the counter until she asked if I needed help. I said yes and explained that I was looking for a thick and thin yarn and showed her a picture of what the pattern used. She said they dont have thick and thin yarn and that she doesnt carry Knit Collage brand yarn. That was it. She didnt offer a substitute brand or yarn, and she went back to talking to the other lady about Ravelry! I was very annoyed at this point and left because I was the ONLY customer in the store besides the lady who was chatting with her at the counter.I was under the impression that Athena Fibers was a place for all levels of crafters, and if I was new to knitting I would have been so turned off from the craft if the only yarn store in town was so disinterested in me. Also, as a 29 year old knitter, this store should try to leave a good impression because I am their next generation of customer or their future customer for many years to come.

Im brand new to the fiber arts and found the woman working very helpful! She let me practice with a spindle before I purchased, gave me instructions and advice. Roving fiber prices are better than etsys.

I, a very basic knitter, and my daughter, a new knitter, stopped in expecting someone to express their love of knitting and yarn and a sharing of ideas of projects to work on. But the gal working could barely look up from her computer long enough to say hi. Even though the yarns were beautiful, it was a ver.y disappointing visit!

For the hardcore knittist/crochetist: snazzier yarns and accessories that Michaels/Joann Fabrics/etc. dont carry. For the newbie: expert advice. Also: fun events (incl. classes and a weekly porch/fireside knit night).Imagine a local record store vs. a chain store except for yarn nerds instead of music snobs, except friendlier.
