I was very excited to try Union Square Donuts since I’ve heard so much about them! I went today (11/5/21) to see what all the hype was about. I got 7 donuts. I’m a big fan of trying all kinds of donut shops! I wanted to try some local spots. I tried the glazed since it’s a true telling if a place has a good basic glazed donut and I was unimpressed. Maybe it’s hard to keep up with multiple locations but my donut tasted like a slice of dense white bread with icing. It was almost flavorless with a random hint of lemon. For $3.75+ a donut I was a little bummed that I wasn’t blown away. Maybe I’ll have to give them another shot sometime and hope this was an error from lack of employees or having too many locations. Overall I wasn’t too happy with my order but I’m willing to give it another shot in the future.
Maple Bacon....others have it. This is the best. Range of surprisingly thoughtful flavours always fresh. Rabid following and expanding number of storefront but this is the mothership
Great donuts!; they are very thick and doughy donuts so they are a bit different from the usual fare. The coffee here was also fantastic. There’s no interior access to the restaurant you have to walk up to the window and order from the sidewalk. Staff was very friendly.I had and can recommend their maple bacon, salted caramel whiskey, and honey glazed donuts. They are not overly sweet and really enjoyed the varied flavors.
I am absolutely disappointed in these donuts. Im sorry, you cant even call these donuts. D&D and Entenmanns Donuts have 100x more flavor than whatever these are suppose to be. I wouldnt mind spending $48 on donuts I could eat. How is it possible that 7 different types of donuts basically taste the same? Honey Glazed, Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake, Vanilla Bean Glazed French Cruller, Belgian Dark Chocolate, Vietnamese Coffee, Raspberry Jam Filled (this name needs to change, I got 1 tsp worth of garbage jam in this so called filled donut), and Sea Salt Whiskey Caramel. They all have different names and look different but nobody in my family could tell the difference between any of them. After watching a special on Chronicle I couldnt wait to try these donuts. Ill never take advice from them again because they obviously base their reviews on what they get to eat for free. Save your money!!!
Nice spot & staff, but the donuts were okay not spectacular.
Had a matcha latte donut. Tasty cream on top. Very unique texture. Yummy
The donuts are decadent, if not overwhelming. I wish they also had some really simple options to even things out. Fun place to try once in a while, but the novelty does wear off.
Used to be my favorite donut shop where I would bring all my out of town guests, but the quality and consistency has gone way downhill the last couple years. The reason for this review spurred by a donut that was both raw and stale (and almost frozen) at the same time. The donuts they serve look nothing like the pictures, english toffee donut had barely any toppings. Throwing 4-5$ donuts in a bag without much care is annoying, just trying to take the wrapper off pulls all the toppings off. Ehhh pass for now until something changes and goes back to how it was.
Dense. These are no light, fluffy donuts. You could do bicep curls with the Boston Cream donut- it is full of heft and flavor. These donuts are not cheap but you are paying for amazing flavor and your taste buds will dance with every bite. Chocolate options, fruit options and even vegan options. Do yourself a favor and pick one up for everyone in your family.
This is my favorite way to treat myself on a bad day, or to definitely start out having a good one. They are the only vegan donuts around, and the taste alone is 5 stars. They are not cakey at all THANK GOODNESS; just a dense, puffed, melt-in-your-mouth wonder. How they do this without butter, eggs, or milk? Beyond me.This from a person who from childhood til this place opened proclaimed I hate donuts. OH HOW THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED. All praise to the cinnamon sugar donut: my one true love.Pro-tip: at the very very very end of shift if they have leftover donuts they will sell them at half price as not to waste them. I may or may not have bought a quantity of donuts beyond my daily caloric intake on an occasion or two...
Got a few different donuts today. All of them were insanely greasy. Im aware donuts are fried, but the oil literally leaked through the wax paper bag they came in. This wasnt even the worst part. I got a Boston Cream and the filling smelled completely spoiled and tasted very sour. Threw it out or else I probably would have gotten food poisoning from eating it.
GREAT Donuts, flavor, texture...innovative with even really delicious vegan products as well as more traditional recipes. Ill be back for sure!
Came for the vegan donuts. Its awesome they are available, but they are definitely lacking in variety and substance. Only three, relatively plain vegan options compared to a plethora of non-vegan. The vegan donuts have much less on them, but cost the same! This place is another case of paying more to be vegan.
This is the most amazing place in Union Square! I highly, highly, highly recommend stopping by an getting some donuts! The donuts are AMAZING and so is the service. Every month or so, they takeout a new holiday donut that has a theme of the month. These donuts are unique, and the most amazing treat you can ask for. I recommend getting the Belgian dark chocolate and the Cookies & Cream donuts ;)
These are some of the best donuts I’ve ever had! They’re huge, delicious and so sweet. The flavors are unique and seasonal. There is always something new. The location has a good vibe and lends itself perfect for donut consumption. Seating is a bit limited, but worth the wait. I’ll visit again when in Boston.
These donuts are a one time thing just to see the variety, these donuts are too dense even if you cut into pieces, flavors are muted, jelly donut is horrible ( my go to donut, jam instead of jelly not good and too dense, powdered sugar( no) real sugar coating( yes) the maple bacon is too dense flavor of maple frosting doesnt come thru, and bacon not necessary on top top, put a strip on the side to enjoy and should be maple syrup dipped, on and on, make them lighter and fluffier like a fresh donut should be able to finish without throwing half away, Boston cream, horrible need a gallon of milk to wash it down, cant taste flavor of cream over chalky dark chocolate, and thick dough, gotta work after eating without falling asleep, again lighter dough, real jelly, smoother chocolate, better cream filling, come on man, as joe Biden would say
Best vegan donuts around, careful though, the cinnamon sugar ones are a single max, I ate two a couple times and thought the sugar was going to kill me. It would have been worth it though, soooo good. Such great staff.
Maple Bacon is my favorite all time. Great donuts with different flavors
Awesome donuts! Beware theyre quite large, more of a treat/dessert than your old fashioned-style New England donuts for breakfast. They are remarkably good though.
First time coming here and had a matcha latte along with the Boston cream donut, Vietnamese donut both were superb.
A friend told me about this place about two years ago and I am so glad I finally made it. This is such an amazing spot with great staff and delicious donuts. I checked out the donuts online before, but I was still overwhelmed by the beauty of the donuts and the selection. After speaking with the staff I decided to get their honey glazed. It is their original flavor and it is oh so good. The honey really pops and gives the donut a nice little kick. And the cake just melts in your mouth. I love that they use local honey and local other products to make their donuts.I cannot wait to come back here when I need another donut fix!!
The kind of donut that raises the bar for what you think a donut can be. Truly exceptional.
One of my favorite donut shop
The maple bacon donuts are amazing! Everything is great. Great variety and flavors; they always have new specials. The staff are so friendly and you never have to wait too long. They have really nice curbside pick up during Covid that’s very safe and quick.
Been coming here since they opened. Still the same great donuts. Try the Brown Butter Hazelnut, Maple Bacon and the funfetti (for those special occasions!)
Not sure what has happened to USD, but I have been going there for 7 years and the quality has gone down recently. Maybe associated with the additional stores and a production facility, but my favorite brown butter hazelnut crunch has all the right flavors, but there is significantly less glaze and the hazelnuts are virtually powder rather than the large toasted pieces of hazelnuts from previous years. Still good, but not the rebel donuts they started off as...
As always, love their donuts! Soft fluffy and hefty! They can be a bit pricey but they’re totally worth it!
I enjoyed the coffee and thought the people were really nice. Donuts could be substantially improved.
Great, inventive donuts, coffee, and nice neighborhood.
I used to love the boston cream donuts here but they have changed the recipe. The cream is thicker and almost gooey, with no vanilla bean flavor like it used to have, and there is a lot less of it in the donut. The chocolate ganache is just ok- the chocolate flavor is less intense and the texture is again less creamy than it used to be. Now it tastes more like a typical boston cream from dunkin donuts, but with a better aftertaste. Very disappointing. The jumbleberry donut is still very good, light and chewy with great fruit flavor in the glaze.
Bland, boring, overrated. Staff were very friendly and nice, but these donuts are just not good.
This is one of the few artisanal donut shops in the Boston area, and it is quite excellent. They have a very unique menu with flavors that change by the season. The yeast donuts are extremely light and fluffy; the cake donuts have textbook perfect texture with a crunchy exterior and moist/soft interior. My only complaint is that they dont offer more cake flavors! Nonetheless, you can expect all kinds of fruit, spice, herb, and savory components to pop up in their donuts that will keep your taste buds intrigued. They also have an excellent selection of teas to choose from if youre into that. To my fellow donut enthusiasts, dont overlook Union Square Donuts if youre anywhere near them!
I absolutely love these donuts but I think their customer service is lacking. I order donuts in person and 5 mins after I order they are out of the donuts I wanted. This would be fine but instead of refunding me for the more expensive donuts I got I just have to pick from the ones they have left. Now I have to go somewhere else for breakfast because I really don’t like the replacement. Wish I had just gotten a refund. Poor customer service imo
The great vegan donut search struggle (how first world of a problem, I know) is NO LONGER! Ahhh how I love this place. Great espresso (with all almond milk as your vegan alternative) and a beautiful array of donuts, 3 of those being vegan choices, one of those choices being a “vegan donut of the day” (pictured is the Aloha vegan donut with a cortado)
The donuts here are very very good. I especially like the maple bacon donut. The donut can be very filling as its a lot for one. So if theres someone that you could share it with you should as its very very good.
I had the “ Sea Salt Whiskey Caramel” donut. It was slightly stale and rather underwhelming. Not what I would expect for $4. Service was great, though.
My favorite place to get a strawberry / berry glazed donut! The glaze doesn’t taste artificial at all. So good!
My favorite donuts ever!! Belgian chocolate and maple bacon are my go-tos and its hard for me to convince myself to try anything else. The texture of these donuts is unlike other places and the toppings are gourmet. And the donuts are huge!
They have seasonal donuts cycling through, standard faves and also a super yummy vegan selection!
The best donuts and the most wonderful staff! Thank you Lynn for helping locate my lost order and being so helpful and kind :)
Fantastic donuts. Would be 5 stars if they had more stock of hazelnut and donut holes.
Great donuts and coffee.
Best donuts Ive had hands down. Although, Ive havent tried Blackbird Doughnuts, so I cant really compare. Just to let you know, the dough is on the heavier side. This place never disappoints. Ive always had an excellent experience every time Ive been here. The service is great too and the staff is really friendly. I highly recommend you give this place a try.
Im being generous giving two stars. The donuts had an unpleasant dense chewiness. The donuts at Ruby in Ayer are better.
This, should be on your, bucket list, an unbelievably tasty treat, worth the trip not to mention, indulgence, with vegan options available ...
Great donuts but terrible employees. I tried to pickup an online order today. There were four people working, the kid that I first spoke to said he couldnt find the order and tried to tell me to go to the other location, after I showed him the order on my phone he decided to help another person that walked up. When he was finally done with that person he simply said sorry we dont have your order. Instead of helping me the other two employees were just talking to each other and one was sweeping the floor. I ended up leaving without any donuts, I wasted my time and money.
Excellent service and my donut while very fresh was just ok. Ill try a different donut next time.
Excellent donuts! One of my favorite places.
Just get the maple bacon donut, it might as well be a Nike product, because you should just do it.
Donuts are so good! They are a bit on the big side--consider sharing. And pick up is fast--dont believe the ordering website when it says it will take 40 minutes. Its just a glitch.
My go to spot for over the top donut to swear by..different flavors monthly basis.
3 bites. after some donuts with my friend, all I have left for my bus ride back to nyc is 3 bites of donut. the Vietnamese coffee donut was so good I had to eat the other ones just to save these 3 bites. knowing Id regret it if I didnt save it for that moment when Im on the bus with some irrevocable longing for that donut again. Id be remiss if I didnt do this on my next visit.
A cute little place. I liked the donuts (my roasted almond donut was tasty, richly flavoured, but no excessively sweet).Unfortunately there isnt much room to sit/hangout. Only three small tables. Otherwise a very likable place.
The donuts are great, and Im glad theyre doing good business, but their line management during covid needs work.
The Vietnamese Coffee might be my favorite, but I always have to try the new flavors they come up with!
Some of the best donuts Ive ever had. More expensive than a chain, but you absolutely get what you pay for and more. You can taste the quality ingredients, freshness, and attention to their craft.
Vegan doughnuts are amazing!
Amazing donuts and amazing service! Even during quarantine they put a display of the menu in the window display with clear lables so it is clear what is available. I recommend their honey glazed donuts, munchkins, and their famous maple bacon donut!
I hardly write a review but I have to for the sake of the donut lover community in cambridge.I have been a customer of union sq donut for the past 5 years. The quality control of their donuts has been awful for the past 2-3 wks. I have bought donuts every weekend and the quality of the same donut weekend to weekend is not the same.Eg: brown butter hazelnut - glaze is coming off the donut giving an experience of eating the dough and glaze separately. I think the yeast fermentation was off resulting in dense and hard dough. It used to have seamless dough and glaze composition that would even make donut haters to enjoy this one but no longer the case. Awful not worth the premium price.Eg: apple cider donut: it is just plain dry and brittle.I love this place and wish the best but will not be a customer if their quality control keeps deteriorating like this week over week.
Its pretty good, not sweet at all! I went there when they almost closed, the bottom of the donuts is kinda oily, and the whole donut is not as puffed. Maybe the earliest ones before afternoon should taste better. Definitely recommended it to go there when they making fresh ones in the morning! Will go there again for sure! Each donuts is about 3 to 4 dollars.
