Terrible business. We Bought two mature tress for 375 each (ouch), but we were confident in the quality after speaking to the owner. Two weeks later, one of the two trees would not root and was dying. We called the owner, and he said it was lack of water. We watered both trees the same amount, yet this tree still would not thrive. We went back after two more months of excessive watering, and asked if there was anything he could do. He said, well theyre now 25% off but we dont guarantee anything. I WILL NEVER do business here. Its tough to support a local business when they arent willing to even look at their poor quality product. Home Depot would have exchanged the trees without a problem. Save yourself the headache and DO NOT DO BUSINESS HERE.
Have been shopping here for years, always support local before big box stores. With that being said, I won’t be spoke to with disrespect and I will not be required to wear a mask. I can go to Lowe’s and/ or Home Depot without being hassled. Local businesses should be more conscious of their customers than the big box stores, after all the box store is less money.
Nice staff, highly informative and genuinely enthused as well as knowledgeable. Nice selection, well stocked and supplied. Fun selection of gizmos and gadgets to give character to the garden & home. Here is sixth rating star ⭐!
This place is amazing, its nothing like any other nursery. Its so unique, special, great for kids & adults. They have so much variety of so many things. Its so magical. Its a very personal experience. Its feels like home. Like an old country store. Family oriented.
Great local nursery! Beautiful nursery with great variety. You get good expert advice and good service. 👍
Just moved here from Seattle I have no clue what kind of plants grow here in Sparks Nevada so I went to Rail city. They have a fabulous selection of everything plus excellent customer service! Mark helped me out so much he is very friendly and very accommodating. He even helped me load my purchases into the car!
Great folks, extremely knowledgeable staff. They have answers to all of your questions, and all of the products you need. Many different types of plants for sale, lots of tools, and a large yard with water features. It is the go-to place for anything green or that grows!
My parents have been going here since they moved to Reno in 1996 and RC Garden Center just opened that year. They always have been treated respectfully and in a friendly manner as I have been, so I have no idea what the other complaints on bsd service have been about. I help my dad get the supplies such as algae inhibitor, floaters and koi here. So its been 25 years of great service. We also used to get some koi from this big reptile store too before they closed, but most of our koi comes from RC.Its a very extensive place with a huge variety of plants, nice garden sculptures and items, stone fountains. Etc. Now they even have a cute little snack and drink bar set up. Because you can spend a very long time looking at so many things! Theres a very friendly marmalade cat that wanders around and a huuuuuuuuuuuge koi that must have been there since the place opened! My father and I wont go anywhere else. The ponds they have there are clean and their fish stock healthy. Thank you for 25 years of great service. I have to drop by to buy more koi soon
While the nursery part of Rail City is really nice, the care that chicks receive could easily be considered neglect and abuse. Chicks are missing back and tail feathers - and chicks are infested with mites. Seems they would rather make a few bucks on the backs of helpless chicks than provide appropriate care for chicks in their care. Shame on Rail City Garden Center. As long as they have chicks (not just now but into future years) I will not spend another dollar at this establishment. There are other locally owned nurseries to give my business to.
Beautiful place, but the prices are extreme! Moana Nursery has better prices..
Got a yard of soil today. The girls up at the front count were nice. But when I got my soil the loader operator was very rude. I dont think it was a full yard. I only got 6 wheel bail loads.Im driving to truckee for full circle products. Their so much nicer. Rail city....bad.
The owner of this nursery and some of the employees are so rude I wouldn’t recommend shopping there. The rude employees get their attitude from the owner.
Wonderful selection of products and knowledgeable and friendly lady that helped me
Friendly staff and cute gift shop
Lots of nice plants and decor, great prices, super friendly and helpful staff.
Wow ! My husband and I are seniors. Town people are always saying buy local buy from Mom & Pops local small businesses. We went to Rail City because we are completely re-doing our pond and waterfall. We walked around for over an hour admiring the statues and yard art. We asked about the pond pumps etc...a very nice employee said the pond shop was locked up but had another person open it. He was laughing because the prices were all in the other building. We told him wed bring our helper back in morning to make our purchase of pump, pad and pond liner. My husband wanted a little boy fishing stature and I wanted a yard girl bird feeder. She was 209.00 .As seniors we get quite a few 10% discounts around town. I asked if we might get a discount on the yard girl. The one woman employee laughed out loud stating we are not a third world country !! WTH ?? So of course we are humiliated. The owner came out to see what item I wanted., he refused 10% and said we should come back in December..I wont EVER EVER go back. Buy local ?? They really dont want your business. We did not buy the fisherman, we didnt buy the garden girl and we will not buy our pond equipment there. Ive taken my parents to Rail so many times. Never again 😒 🙃
Great nursery. Everything you need and more.
Weve used Rail City for over 20 years for all of our garden, tree and yard needs. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and we love listening to The Garden Show on KOH on Saturday mornings. Pawl Hollis is amazing.
I loved this place until recently. I found out they have chicks and when I found the conditions they are in it saddened me. the were stuffed in there, bald and so anxious. They were hidden in a back corner in the fish barn. All the chicken things were covered in spider webs and the chicks were in a HOT building with stale air no open windows and their heat lamps were still on. Im sure they were over heating. when I spoke to the manager paul the first time about lowering the whopping 12.99 each to something more affordable so I can take the 35+ birds left he was really sweet and said let me call you back to see what we could do. After hours with no response I was able to get ahold of him and he said no Im only going to raise the price then sell them at 24.99. he has no care for the conditions of the chicks who are about 12 weeks old and could care less when I offered them a home. The He is money hungry and this place should never be able to have chicks again. The
Wonderful as always worth the two-hour Drive and the workers are very very helpful
Last July I had bought two fruited mulberry trees from Rail City and paid to have them delivered and installed. First, I called Rail City to see if they had any fruited mulberry trees. I was told they did not. I ran into a former employee at another nursery and he told me to go to the back and look because the owner doesnt keep inventory and they have no clue what they have. Low and behold, I did what he told me and I found three fruited mulberry trees. So, I bought two of them and paid to have them delivered and installed. The guys came out, planted and staked the trees as per the written agreement that came with the trees. One tree made it through the winter. The other did not. I went to Rail City on 06/14/2020 to talk to them about replacing the tree and was told I would get a call this morning. Well (06/15/2020) about ten minutes ago a lady named Cindy called. She states that Pawl says that there was no drip system installed so therefore they are not going to honor their warranty. Nowhere in the papers that I signed for delivery and install did it say I had to have a drip system. No one told me that I had to have a drip system installed when I bought the trees and the guys installing did not say I had to have a drip system installed. Cindy admitted that there was NOTHING in writing in the contract that said I had to have a drip system installed. I have bought multiple trees at this nursery over the years and NO ONE has ever told me that I had to have a drip system installed. I have brought trees back myself in the past with receipt and there have never been any questions as to whether or not I had a drip system installed. I have multiple trees on my property with no drip installed to any of them and many have been here for over 20 years without a drip system. Rail City, you can and should be doing better than this. Your own employee admitted there was NOTHING in my written contract that said I had to have a drip system. Poor business practice all the way around. Beware of the purchases you make from this company. I would not recommend them at all.
Always a fun place to visit with knowledgeable staff that are super helpful. Cant wait for spring when theyre fully stocked.
Its a little expensive but they have everything you need.
Pretty awesome selection but rude and very dismissive cashiers. Go somewhere else if you want to be treated like a human being.
Nice selection of plants and yard art at a competitive price
Selection is awesome. Waiting for cherry tree in two weeks.
Great place just a little bit pricy
It is a great place to look for plants and landscaping ideas for your yard. The staff is knowledgeable growing plants suitable for our area. They have helped us with infestation of ants, aphids and lawn mushrooms.
Friendly staff, nice selection of products, good prices!
I am a local Landscape Designer here in Sparks, Nevada. My family owns a Landscape contracting business and frequently shop at all of the nurseries in town for our clients. In the past I have spent thousands of dollars in plant materials from Rail City Garden Center. Although I have been very pleased with the merchandise and the staff at Rail City, the owner Paul is absolutely one of the most disrespectful nursery owners I have ever spoken to.This morning my brother and I went to rail city to purchase some plants for a client of ours and would have spent at minimum of $500 today in merchandise. However, I ask to speak to Owner about purchasing some broken or unused storage shelves in his back lot along with the nursery stock I had intended on buying. The staff member I had spoken with was extremely helpful and accommodating yet when I spoke with Paul the Owner, he did not want to give me or my brother the time of day.He agreed that he had what we were hoping to purchase but said: No.Otherwise in his words: I have what you want but do not wish to give you the time of day or the opportunity to purchase, and turned his back to my brother and myself. He was so disrespectful in fact that even the staff member that had walked us over to speak to him was very apologetic and extended an offer to us to come back at another time to attempt to make our purchase.Frankly I felt so disrespected that I put back all of the plant stock from the nursery that I was ready to purchase and left to spend my money at another nursery in town. I from here on out will refrain from making any large purchases from Rail City Garden Center merely because of Paul.
Friendly employees. Great selection of plants.
I like Rail City because they have a variety of plants, trees, shrubs and garden decorations. The prices are good and the employees are helpful. If you want or have a pond they can set you up with that as well. The hanging baskets are fabulous.
As always! Had quality soil, at a good price!
We shop here frequently. They have great products. I took our daughter, granddaughters and two of great grandchildren to a scarecrow workshop. They built my scarecrow and I have wonderful memories to boot.
Great customer service and knowledgeable staff.
Rail City has an amazing selection of plants, from garden vegetables to shrubs, trees and flowers. The staff is always nearby, eager to help and very knowledgable. This is the best garden store in the Reno and Sparks area.
Nice people. Greatfull for the Arborists help, will be coming out to access Moms Pines.
Employees were very helpful. A lot of products in a small space. I have been before and will go back again.
A GREAT place.!!¡
This is such a magical place. Not only do they have all the live garden items that one would expect at a garden center but the decorative items are amazing! You could spend hours there. Great gift ideas too!
Awesome place! Very family friendly and great service and products. Id give 6 stars if I could!
Renos best.
Nice garden nursery but wouldn’t recommend the at home tree service. Waited weeks for an appointment and than they sent someone not qualified to treat the trees after being an hour late. Waited another couple weeks for them to send someone out to treat the trees and than they tried to reschedule the day before they were coming.Would also recommend getting a bid for any work you want done in writing, was told one price and than received a bill for $150.00 more than I was quoted when they came out. I called and tried to get it cleared up but they were not even willing to stand by their original quote. Just be sure you have it in writing.
Friendly and informative
Knowledgeable and friendly staff, well stocked with a great selection. Would recommend
This Garden shop is the go to leader in the area whether it is their awesome selection of plants & flowers & trees well they have them all. They have a great selection of one off and nice farm/yard art. Paul the owner is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to diagnosing & treating any garden pest or weed or anything else you might need help with. Rail City Garden is the place to shop for anything green or just plain & simple for your yard or garden needs.
This place is huge!! I came looking for small cacti and succulents, which they didnt have. They have succulents, but not the individual indoor ones I was looking for. Theirs are more like the ground cover type. They had cactus too but, again, not individual little ones. They had large, huge spined ones like youd find in the wild. However, if youre looking for things to build a gnome or fairy garden, this is your place! They have a huge selection of indoor and outdoor decor, including things youd never think existed, like an almost full sized moose! There is also a play house for kids thats pretty cool and a pond with fish to look at. Its a fun place to get lost in for sure!
Went to get some plants for our pond. Andrew was very helpful and knowledgeable and answered all of our questions.
Love this place! So many cool plants and decorations. Kids loved it too. Come with your wallet full though, pretty expensive.
Friendly staff they have a little of everything
Diverse and thorough, pricey selection. From landscaping, to garden, to patio, to indoors. Fish pond shop in the back. Coffee bar weekend am. Playhouse treehouse for little kids. Friendly staff. Sprawling jewel. Farm eggs and milk.
Rail City has a great selection of landscape plants, trees and shrubs, annuals bulbs and perennials. Still lots of vegetables too. I really love the varieties of succulents too. They carry a full selection of organic options for your garden too. They have a great home decor area with lots of fun signs and knolick knacks. On the north end is the pond supply, so you can get set up with a nice pond. They also do seminars on the weekends. Staff is friendly and very courteous as well as knowledgeable.
We have listened to the Rail City Garden Show on Saturday morning for over ten years. The suggestions and advice are monumental in assisting us with designing and installing our flower garden and vegetable beds. We went for the garlic plants today. Cant wait for the freshness of homegrown garlic flavored foods!
Knowledgable and friendly staff and reasonable prices.
Scored a cool shrub from this place friendly and helpful staff!
All I can say is I am incredibly disappointed in Rail City bought 4 cyd of soil from them but couldOnly pick up one at a time in our trailer. We found out after 2 we didn’t need the other 2. So I went to get my money back and they said they will only give store credit. I said I don’t want store credit I want the money back on the product we did not pick up. They said no. I was so excited about saving 125$ on this expensive project. But now I have 125$ gift card to a store that has horrible customer service and I never want to shop at again. When we were trying to figure out what soil to use for our garden the lady up front just walked away to talk to someone else. I tried to shop local and support a local business. But I guess they don’t care about getting return business. On a side note Getty who loaded our soil was awesome!
I never knew about this place. Gorgeous Foliage! Wide variety. They have everything for garden and property right down to fountains and lawn art. They also have a great selection of fun decorations for in and outside.
This is the best garden center ever. Nothing compares!
I asked questions and got great answers
Great place!
Took a hanging basket class this morning. I wanted to purchase a basket like the one in the demonstration and the other materials used. I asked two different employees for help finding the wire attachment hook to hang the basket with. No one helped me. One was too busy watering plants and the other was too busy telling other employees when and how long their lunch break would be to be bothered with helping me. I drove 17 miles to take this basket class and left with nothing to make one.
Loved it. They had a lot to choose from and a variety of different items interested us. Staff seemed very kind. We will be back.
They stock above average plants quality-wise. It has a large selection of trees. It also has soil, rocks and gravel. I ordered a yard of soil today to fill in some low spots in my garden. The cost was around $35 but they would have had to the cost to bring the order up to the $100 minimum for delivery. So the sales lady told me they had triple mix for about $58 a yard. I had to pay the hundred bucks anyway, so I said to send to me the triple mix. It arrived and I went a bit berserk. Triple mix is not soil or dirt. It is a fluffy, fly away in the wind, extremely staining black mix of useless material. It was like black potting soil.It rained after they unloaded it and the horrible black mess blackened the sidewalk with something that looked like used motor oil. It blackened my shoes which I managed to trail through the house.I contacted neighbors to remove the pile for free for their flowers. It was useless for garden dirt or soil to fill my low spots. I had specifically asked for dirt or soil, not potting mix. I should not have let them switch me. They said that the soil had no nutrients. Of course all soil has nutrients! Overall, their prices are okay but on the upper end.I would suggest that customers not to use the triple mix in areas where children play. I suspect that material may come from sewer-reclaimation and may contain lead or other dangerous materials. It should be tested before using around children.
My wife and I had a similar experience to others here. We requested an estimate for a pond at $65. After the owner came out and took measurements we didnt hear back for weeks. We ended up having to go in multiple times and many weeks later the owner hand wrote a quote on a piece of paper with a total cost only. We requested an itemized quote to determine what changes we might want and the owner refused to give one and said thats just what the job cost. Take it or leave it. Needless to say we stopped shopping there for many years.Fast forward to this spring. My wife and I purchase chickens for the first time. We ended up purchasing them there because they were the only ones that guaranteed them at over double the cost as everywhere else in town. We picked some speckled Sussex. As they grew they turned out not to be Sussex at all and we are still unsure what breed they are. We are now attached but they were not as advertised. It will be the last purchase we make from them.
Fun stuff for Xmas! I will definitely make other trips here for plants and decorating. Great prices too
An amazing variety of plants. All the items you could ever want to care for your flowers, lawn, trees or garden. Also water feature equipment and koi for purchase. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable.
This is a fun place to shop for garden supplies!
Always a great experience... customer service is on point
Vegetables and planting needs..everything you could need. Knowledgeable, Friendly staff... beautiful merchandised !!
Thanks for having a great selection of plants and tools. More options for treating various lawn issues than you can shake a stick at. Ask the staff any question, they know what works in the local environment.
Very cool garden center. Friendly helpful and smart. Best in region.
I have been coming to Rail City for several years. The people there are so helpful and have so much more knowledge than other big box garden centers. They also give a lot to the community with their seminars and classes. I have found the entire staff to be friendly and caring and I am more than surprised at some of the other comments and reviews of their businesses. They have almost built a nice following of people who regularly attend and visit the place. Some of the products may seem a bit more expensive than the big name stores, but the fact is that those same stores dont sell the organic and natural solutions offered at Rail City. I have compared some of the same products that they do have and found the prices the same in almost every instance. Listen, if you want to buy corporate conglomerate products (which arent necessarily bad) then go there, or if you want to buy from people who live here and are more of like a boutique, then go to Rail City. Its that simple.
Cute place for everything you may need for your home and garden. Dont forget to say hi to Stubbs the orange kitty.
Great garden center for anything you need plus Tahoe icecream and great home made bread and locally grown beef
Great selection. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and lots of fun events. Great gift/decor section too!
I was looking for a Job and love it i start tomorrow~ ANYTHING ypu need come see us at the Rail City Garden Center, In Sparks, NV.
I hired the owner to come check all the health of my trees after I had to have a 60 maple cut down because it was infested with beetles. He said the rest of my trees were in good health. Six month later I had another guy trim my trees today he informed me 2 of my large trees are infested with beetles and have been for some time, I think they are idiots you be the judge.
A lot of tomato plants. At the moment not a very good selection of herbs. Are advertising having chicks.
I ordered a plant from Monrovia, but instead of delivering to my house, they required it be sent to a garden center near me. So when it should have arrived, I went to Rail City, and asked if they received anything for me from Monrovia. The girl at the desk said we dont do that, but she did call someone who told her, they do act as intermediaries. One star for that. No one checked to see if the plant had arrived though. Later in the day they called to say they had the plant. Extra trip for no reason. Bad business practice.
We were shopping for a greenhouse. We had been to the website for the greenhouse they had, watched all of the videos, and we knew what size and which options we wanted. Only Paul could answer our questions for us and he was out collecting the black lab dog that keeps running away. (Your dog keeps running away? Repeatedly? Not exactly an example of responsible pet ownership, yet I digress). Paul came back with said dog and we sat down with him at his station. He proceeded to tell us what we needed and not hear what we wanted. He could not find the prices of any of the options that existed that we wanted. He had a woman make up a quote for us, yet the quote did not reflect what we had asked for as far as options were concerned. We said wanted to set it up ourselves (might take 2 people about 3 hours), yet a $500 set up and delivery was added for a product manufactured 10 miles from the store and our house. He told us you dont need those options and you dont need a greenhouse that big. He did not make eye contact with me once and would only answer questions from my husband; I did not exist to him. The female workers were extremely subservient to this man; it was very awkward and a tad creepy. We will never go back there for any reason.
Affordable prices and very extensive invantory. Both watergarden and drought/hardy plants. Decor, both indoor and outdoor, extensive brands for fertilizer, soil, pesticide, sprouting, seeds and etc. also sells helping insects and worms for composting. Cheaper than a couple other garden centers in town, comparable to large chains.
Wow! This little hole in the wall place blows away Moana. Its about 3 times the size and has really nice stuff. I wouldnt have known if a neighbor hadnt mentioned it.
Love walking around an looking at all the cool stuff . went to pick up fish food an stuff for my pond . friendly an helpful people
Theyre extremely helpful and knowledgeable at Rail City and I always love checking out the cool little things that they have
We really like Rail City. Very helpful staff. Great selection.
This was my first trip to this garden center and I wasnt disappointed. Rail city garden center had everything I was looking for and at a great price.
They have everything
Nice garden decor
They had what I wanted, got help immediately and was out of there in a short time. Great place!
Friendly knowledgeable staff ( helped me to be sure what it was getting would survive with reasonable care) and a nice selection of plants.
Fabulous place -- Im looking for Earthworms for my vermicomposter. I first call Moana Nursery because its closer and more convenient to where I live. I need to listen to a message before I get a live person on the phone and then he tells me they are out of worms. I ask him how much they cost and how many come in a package and he cant provide me with any information beyond they come in a cup about the size of soup -- doesnt really help me to make an informed decision when I need 600 to 800 worms. I decide to call Rail City. The phone is picked up by an actual person within a few rings and the clerk, Megan, goes and checks on the price of worms for me and tells me how many come in a package. Obviously, Rail City prioritizes customers and wants to stay in business.
Best garden shop ever they know what they are doing Paul is awesome highly recommended
Friendly staff and full of.knowledge. they definitely know their.stuff!!
Beautiful with lots to choose from. Would of liked a little more help.
Very nice place they have everything possible there and great help
Great selection, and awesome staff. Thanks for your help Ron..
First, their hours on their Google page are incorrect. They are open 8:00 am to 5:00pm, but Google shows Saturday until 6:00pm. Wrong!! Ive been going here for years and the service has gone down hill a bit. They were never that price competitive, but the service use to make up for it. I was in and couldnt find help and was ready to buy dozens of large potted trees and shrubs. Their loss.
